3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but expensive: should be a bit better for the price
This 1.8 qt teakettle is a bit small, maybe 2/3 the size of a typical teakettle. One kettle of boiling water is not enough for morning tea for the two of us, as it was with earlier kettles.

PROS: stylish; nice choice of colors; reasonably well-made; unique harmonica whistle which is the main reason for paying a higher price; includes mitt for easy handling (see CONS).

CONS: expensive; smallish size; enamel can chip on enamel kettles; must use mitt on the metal handle when pouring hot water (or wait until it cools).

The whistle blows at a good volume, so we can hear it from the second floor when it boils in the kitchen. The two-note harmonica sound is much more pleasant than the shrill whistle of a traditional kettle, but ours is a bit dissonant, not a chord; this seems to vary from kettle to kettle, judging by other reports. It starts with one steady note, gets louder, then the second note comes in.

Because the kettle is smallish, the base is a bit smaller too, and we cannot turn the flame up full force without having it lick up the sides.Still, it seems to boil water fairly fast, about right for its smaller size.

We were originally shopping for one on ebay (where some other colors are available), but found that older kettles did not come with the hot-kettle mitt that is included with new units, and this mitt is essential, because the metal handle does get hot when it boils. Also, the ebay prices end up without much savings over a new one, and you can't usually return it (for example, if it does not whistle).I suggest that you do not put the mitt on the handle when the pot is heating; instead, wait until you have turned off the flame.

If you search froogle, you will find at least one online store that sells the unit for eleven ten dollars less than amazon, with fair shipping fees.

We chose the enamel kettle for its look and color (onyx, which is slightly darker than stainless steel). The disadvantage of enamel, according to other reports, is that it can chip and, when it does, it can rust. This is more of a problem for the interior. The stainless-steel and copper models have a stainless-steel interior, and should never rust. The exterior of those models has a coating to keep it looking nice and make it easier to clean, but I assume with time this clear coating will peel, scratch, or otherwise deteriorate.

Washing it once every few weeks with a non-scratch sponge and regular dishwashing liquid (not when it's real hot) will keep it looking nice. There is also a special ceramic cleaner that we bought, but I have my doubts that it is needed.

To get long life out of any kettle, it is important to turn off the fire after it comes to a boil.Boiling water for a long time will eventually heat the plastic parts and cause them to melt or warp. The Chantal is mostly metal, but there is a gasket in the water-fill hole, and there might be some plastic in the flip-up whistle assembly at the end of the spout.

We fill the kettle from the spout. It does not take any longer, and that way you won't wear out the gasket in the water-fill hole.If you wear out the gasket, or if the flip-up whistle-cover for the spout warps or is bent, you won't get a good seal, and the kettle won't whistle.Without the whistle you're in danger of overheating the kettle, and that leads to rapid deterioration.

The Chantal kettle is well-made, and with proper care, could last many years. You can buy replacement parts, for example if the gasket needs to be replaced.

Why three stars?I took one star off for the price, which I think is high for a teakettle.I took one star off for the relatively smaller size, and because the tone is dissonant.I'm happy with this unique kettle, but a bit stingy with my stars: only a few of the finest products get five stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars For this price a kettle should last forever
I received this kettle as a gift some years ago.Initially I loved it.It's beautiful and well balanced.Unlike others who complained of a loud whistle, I found the whistle to be whisper quiet, more of a hiss actually.I would easily miss it if out of the room, but as it continues to boil the whistle gets louder.I have a gas stove, and the handle does get very hot; I always use a pot handler.Nice big opening for filling and cleaning. Now for the negative:The inside bottom of mine chipped and started to rust after 3 years of use.The bottom now is pockmarked with rusted areas.Since I never used any hard utensils, I can't understand why the interior degraded. Now I have to discard this beautiful and expensive kettle. I'm getting stainless next.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ouch!
Handle really does get unbelievably hot!And who wants to fuss with that silly potholder all the time (now included and none too attractive).Plus, the whistle sounds like an air raid, or something equally ominous. So not worth a hundred clams. This baby's going back.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Classic" is the word. Great teakettle!
Have a kitchen full of Chantal cookware and am completely happy with all of it, but the teakettle is the favorite.Classic design, sturdy, it just works great.Dig the whistle! It's a very pleasing minor sixth, plus an octave in the key of B.I can't believe that people complain because it gets hot - it's a teakettle! It's supposed to get hot!Common sense says use a potholder when handling pots and pans.Chantal has GREAT customer service. They handle issues quickly and professionally. Can't ask for better than that.

This solidly built, classic-looking teakettle says you're serious about your tea. The bright stainless-steel finish makes the kettle an eye-pleasing focal point on the stovetop. Even more of an attention-getter is the two-tone harmonica whistle--an amusing reminder to the household that the water is boiling and ready to pour. The flat aluminum base ensures that water heats quickly, and the lid with its black rubber gasket keeps the heat in. The boldly curved metal handle and other metal parts can get quite warm, so use a potholder when picking the kettle up and flipping up the whistle. The lid opening is large enough to make cleaning easy. --Dale Steinke ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars For decoration ONLY
I bought this kettle for looks and that is all I got. It gets so hot as to be unusable and I had to make myself a little sleeve to put on the handle to even hold it. The finish has not held up well and even though I use commercial stainless steel cleaners and polishes it still looks horrid. In general I do not recommend Chantal products - I have had two saucepans that held up well, but a roaster and stockpot have been huge disappointments. If you actually want to USE your kitchen utensils, I would avoid this brand.

5-0 out of 5 stars To brew the perfect cup of tea ...
... start with a Chantal tea kettle. After having purchased tea kettles that didn't whistle consistently even when full (the OXO Good Grips Uplift for one), it is nice to finally have one that does. No longer do I have to worry about putting the kettle on and forgetting about it! The water is heated very quickly, and it has a nice sounding harmonica whistle that is just the right loudness. I have a gas stove and the handle did get hot. Another reviewer had a good idea about using a pot handle hotpad (the Woolworks wool one fits well), but the handle cools so quickly that I find that I usually don't even use it. This is the nicest looking tea kettle that I've seen. Even though it is 2.5 quarts it's not as big and clumsy as some of the others. One look at the bottom of this kettle, and you know that it is sturdy, sturdy, sturdy! Most definitely a high quality kettle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seinfeld Loves It
Ever since I saw this Chantal Kettle on Seinfeld I had to have one. The classy design is enhanced by the harmonic, non-intrusive whistle and the stay-cool handle. If you go through tea kettles like I used to I recommend investing in a Chantal; a teakettle with class and staying power. Oh yes, it boils water just fine. ... Read more

This 1-1/2-quart tea pot steeps and pours tea for two right at the table. The plain design and vibrant color goes with many of Chantal’s stoneware tea mugs and complements most other tableware. Made of high quality stoneware, the tea pot provides excellent heat retention to keep water warm at the table. In addition, the pot has a nonporous, lead- and cadmium-free glaze that won’t retain tea odors. A smooth, hand-sanded bottom ensures that the tea pot’s underside won’t scratch countertops or dining tables. As with all of Chantal’s high-quality ceramicware, this pot can go into the dishwasher without cracking, crazing, or fading in color. This pot is for serving only and Chantal advises not to use it right on the stovetop. Chantal covers this 48-ounce tea pot under a 1-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Teapot
I've been using a Brown Betty faithfully for my tea for years, but when my friend showed me this Chantal TeaSteep, I was intrigued. It is so easy to haul out the wet leaves before my tea gets bitter (I recycle the steeped leaves as mulch on my outdoor plants), I never used to catch it in time to prevent bitterness. My tea tastes great consistently, epecially my favorite loose leaf teas from TeaTimeGarden.com, and not only was it easy to find the perfect color of pot for my kitchen decor on Amazon.com, but I got it for half the price of my friend's (;-) tea-hee!) delivered right to my door. I got some great Chantal cups to coordinate with my pot, in different colors for all my tea-drinking friends to tell their cups apart. I am perfectly pleased with this teapot. That Bodum glass teapot with the infuser looks neat, too, but I prefer to match my kitchen decor, have easier assembly/disassembly, and hide the potentially mineral-stained interior of my pot from prying eyes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure pleasure to use
Good workmanship, well-balanced, easy to use in spite of the size, and a very functional ceramic infuser. I am getting another one (just to be safe). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars teakettle
Great kettle,,looks great and is the nicest kettle I have ever owned. I really like the look and the whistle sound is cool.

3-0 out of 5 stars Crazy for Chantal!
The Chantal 2 1/2-quart teakettle is not only aesthetically pleasing but is also energy efficient because it heats water to the boiling point in a short period of time. I bought a Chantal teakettle when it first came on the market, and I have used it on a Jenn-aire ceramic stovetop, a gas burner range, and an electric range--all with good results for heating water quickly. However, I have had to ask Chantal to replace my teakettle twice because of rust on the inside near the lid. Also the lid would become stuck in place and impossible to remove, so I would fill it with water through the pouring spout. The charming two-tone Hohner "harmonica" top of the spout has stopped playing on the one I have now. I think the reason for the problems with the Chantal teakettle have everything to do with the hardness of one's water. Yet, I love this teakettle so much that I will replace it myself if I must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very, very happy with my Chantal 2-1/2 qt. Tea Kettle
I have had my Chantal Teakettle for approximately 14 years (it is blue, however, instead of red). It has performed perfectly and still looks as new as the day it was purchased and given a home. Unlike other tea kettles I have owned, it has remained not only as beautiful but as strong as when it was new. Others I have had, have deteriorated in a short amount of time. I truly think this one will last a lifetime. I highly recommend it and how easy to be able to order it here. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant but ...
I bought this after my enameled kettled rusted out and chipped on the inside. So I was looking for stainless, something with a handle that did not require a pot holder, and I was struck by the design of this kettle. It has a satin finish, a heavy handle, and a reinforced bottom that sits well on the burner. I am a big tea drinker so I use it a lot and admire its design. The problems: The whistle is soft and does not always work. It does not always work because the cover doesn't always fit well and steam escapes around it. Also once it boils and you want to put up some more water the cover doesn't always come off when the pot is hot. (My husband the industrial engineer says it has to do with the materials expanding with heat, etc.) It is very well made and elegant though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and functional
Absolutely fantastic. I bought the Chantal Swan tea kettle yesterday and have spent the last day making up excuses to boil water just so I could use the thing. It's very stylish (I can see why it won the design award). The "stay cool" handle really does stay cool -- no need to use a potholder to pick the kettle up. And the whistle is great. It's a different whistle than in Chantal's higher priced "classic" tea kettle line but, in my opinion, it's MUCH better. The Swan whistle is slightly harmonic but not as loud or shrill as the whistle in Chantal's classic tea kettle.

Speaking of Chantal's classic tea kettle, that actually was the first kettle I bought yesterday. Terrible. The whistle was loud, shrill and annoying and the handle was much too hot to handle without a potholder. I exchanged it the same day for the Swan. Now I couldn't be happier.

Bonus: The Chantal classic kettle is $100 but the Swan is only $60. Save yourself $40 and get the better kettle.

One negative about the Swan is that it dribbles a bit of water out of the spout as the water boils. Not a big deal on my stove but this is why I gave it four stars instead of five. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the Swan kettle. ... Read more

This whistling teakettle makes a perfect gift for a recent graduate or for anyone (even yourself) who likes to make a pot of Irish breakfast tea to get going in the morning, or who likes to have a friend over for black currant tea in the afternoon. 3-0 out of 5 stars Very pretty, but.
I recieved this kettle as a wedding gift about a week ago. I love its elegant appearance very much. However, this kettle makes only one tone whistle. I boiled water 10-20 times so far... I don't know it's worth $70 when it cannot make two-tone hohner harmonic whistle. ... Read more
