Amazon.com Review Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine. Features Reviews (119)
We especially liked the auto espresso flow feature.
This is a great machine for personal use. Based on other reviews I've read here, I see that some people are disappointed about some aspects of the machine, which I'll try to clarify: -The frother nozzle is hard to clean. In fact, I don't clean it, and it hasn't been a problem. If you think about it, you have scalding hot steam coming out every time you froth some milk, so I'm not worried about germs. -You shouldn't leave the machine on for longer than you need to. This is not an always-on model like my rich friend has. -You cannot brew directly into most mugs; I use a small enamel cup. Shot glasses also work, but tend to cool the espresso too much because glass has such a high heat capacity. This is not unusual for espresso machines; most commercial espresso places brew into shot glasses. -The steam nozzle drips like crazy while you're brewing. I keep a spoonrest underneath to catch the drips. -You have to hit the brew button after foaming to let out the super-hot steam enough that the coffee doesn't get scalded (if you foam before pulling the shots, which I do). -The basket needs to be filled to the proper level. You should loosely scoop it about 7/8 full, then tamp it with the built-in tamper. You should get a firm but not hard surface on the grounds. If you can't press the top of the basket against the machine, it's too full. If the tamper doesn't make a complete disc on the top of the grounds, it's not full enough. This machine is not meant to be given a hard-packed pellet of espresso grounds, nor is it meant to be used with less than a full basket. -This machine does not produce a hard grounds puck like most machines. I believe this is because of the kind of filter/gasket combination is has to give a good crema. Therefore, when emptying it between shots, I recommend rinsing it in the sink rather than banging it over a puck can. I never take the basket out of the handle, and I haven't had any problems with it. If you grind your coffee right, it won't clog your kitchen drain. If you're getting a clogged drain from doing this, you're probably also getting bad coffee from too coarse a grind. -Don't let it run out of water or it makes a horrible sound. I've done this at least five times, but it's never caused damage. -The shot size is not consistent. I always watch the pull and stop it when it's reached the amount I want. So, as you can see, this is not a pro machine, and I'd probably be annoyed by the above characteristics if I'd dropped eight hundred bucks on this thing. But this is an inexpensive $150 machine, and you can't beat that with a stick for a pump machine. If you see other reviewers that said this machine doesn't make great espresso, they're doing it wrong, and it's really not hard. You just have to not pack the ground so tightly.
The filter holds water and leaks when you remove it, and no cup I own will fit under it without taking the shelf off completely. The filter leaked the first time, so I started over with less coffee. No leaking but watery coffee. Further attemps with increasing, decreasing coffee and tamp pressure also unsuccessful. I ended up using my old machine and adding expresso to my mug to make it drinkable. The frother is at a poor angle, I can't get any of my tall mugs under it without picking the machine up and raising the entire level of the container. I tried angling my cup with the machine at the sink edge, and it was still not possible without spilling some of the frothed milk. I have shipped this machine back and thank Amazon for making it so easy to do so. I really wanted this machine to be the best I ever owned.
This would be an OK machine for light use (others in its price range don't look any better) but for serious coffee drinking spend an extra hundred or two on something more robust.

Amazon.com Review Briel is Europe's largest manufacturer of pump-driven espresso machines, and its Multi-Pro series is designed to be used with fresh ground coffee or ESE coffee pods, which are small portions of ground coffee pressed between two pieces of food-compatible paper. Coffee pods are packed with the right weight, roast, and grind, so even the inexperienced barista can consistently make great espresso. This machine features Auto Espresso Flow, an adjustable electric timing control that lets you select serving size in advance. One of two filter holders brews two cups of espresso at a time. Other bright spots include the Turbo Jet frother, equipped with a steam control knob and removable cappuccino nozzle; a self-priming pump fed by filtered suction and water return tubes; a cup warmer; a removable drip tray and grid; and a coffee tamper. The removable 2.5-liter water tank also has a water level indicator viewable from the front of the machine. One downside is that the brew head fits so tightly into the filter holder that it strictly limits the amount of coffee that can be loaded into it, which complicates the brewing process when using fresh ground coffee. --Matthew Evans Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine. Features Reviews (52)
Not only did I like the resulting rich espresso that the unit extracted, but I also liked the "sub zero" stainless steel look of the machine. It's commercial in quality and performance, easy to use and produces an espresso or cappuccino as good as you can get at the local coffee bar or restuarant, without having to leave your home. I tried using the coffee pods for the first time and the result was even better than use with ground coffee (which was alreay good!). Besides the coffee result, there was no messing cleanup, no grinding of coffee and the mess involved with the process, no worries about the correct amount of coffee to place in the filter basket and no concern about tamping the coffee either too much or not enough. The pod works beautifully with this machine. After all of the above, I decided to shop around. I called BRIEL directly in Atlanta and they suggested that we check out the BRIEL STORE at amazon.com. Clicking onto this site gave us all of the information that we needed to know concerning BRIEL and we made our selection with ease and without complications.

Simply put, it's as GOOD AS YOU CAN GET!
The results and reliability of this machine is unbelievable for the price...the machine could easily sell for two times the price I paid. I've seen this machine in Europe and it's very popular there. I noticed one comment where someone complained about the service given by the BRIEL office here. I've contact them and found them to be courteous, professional and very attentive to my needs. In the past I've tried to get through to other companies who produce espresso machines and got little to no response. Not the case with BRIEL. I would recommend BRIEL and the ES200 MULTI PRO machine to everyone who wants a serious and consistently perfect espresso. Thanks to AMAZON.COM for carrying such a great machine at a super price.

Amazon.com Review A self-priming pump, fed by filtered suction and water return tubes, serves both the espresso and the drip-coffeemakers. The espresso machine portion is sensational and produces a rich thick crema each time we brew espresso, whether it be from pods of ground coffee. The auto espresso flow feature makes it easy to start and the machine stops automatically based on the amount of coffee you requested. The machine is a real powerhouse in terms of steam pressure for frothing milk. We use this several times a week. We love the feature of the machine is the drip coffeemaker portion. We enjoy espresso, but don't drink it everyday. However, drip coffee, that's another story! It brews 10 cups of hot coffee in a short amount of time. The pause and serve feature is great. This combination machine is perfect for our counter as it's a multi-purpose machine that is used everyday. You can even brew drip coffee at the same time as making an espresso. We purchased the ESPRESSIONE pods from AMAZON and really love the 100% Arabica blend...just like being in southern Europe! We would highly recommend this machine based on both quality, looks and most important performance.

Amazon.com Review The Sintra also has some nice functionality on the espresso/cappuccino side, starting with its Auto Espresso Flow system. This system lets you set the coffee strength according to taste, from a stronger, Italian-style short cup to a larger, less robust brew. The espresso is brewed at the required 190 degrees F, and the machine has 15 bars of pump pressure. And it's speedy, brewing two cups in about 35 seconds. It also makes good cappuccino, because of its steam nozzle, which lets you froth the milk. Some other nice features include its patented Cremaker filter, which provides a richer crema on each espresso, an exterior water-level indicator, and a cup warmer. In shining stainless steel and sturdy black plastic, this machine won't shame any counter. It has 2,010 watts of power, measures 14 by 11-1/2 by 10 inches (length by height by depth), and comes with a 10-year pump warranty. --A.J. We just received our BRIEL SINTRA machine last week. It's fabulous. Recently, we just redesigned our kitchen with stainless steel appliances and wanted a powerful, yet attractive machine that would fit in. I don't drink espresso everyday, but wanted a combination machine that made a quality cup of drip coffee along with a pump espresso machine. So we purchased the SINTRA from BRIEL. This machine offers a sleek Stainless Steel look exterior with added features such as Auto Espresso Flow and a warming plate for pre-heating cups. The espresso part of the machine is impressive and makes it easy for anyone to create authentic espresso, cappuccino or latte every time! This full size machine is adaptable for use with ground coffee or coffee servings (pods)! I get my pods from AMAZON.COM. The 10-cup drip coffeemaker portion of the machine is sensational. It brews drip coffee quickly, at the proper hot temperature and has a nice feature of brew interuption, where you can sneak a cup, before it's completed! Some of the features that my wife and I like most about the machine: 1. Large, removable water reservoir that fills from the top. 2. Water level visible from the front. 3. GREAT ESPRESSO EXTRACTION due to Constant 15 Bar pump pressure producing a savory espresso with perfect crema every time 4. POWERFUL STEAM with a snap-on Turbo Jet Frother produces plentiful dry steam for a thick milk froth for a cappuccino or latte 5.SMALL FOOTPRINT ON COUNTER Before we had an espresso machine and a drip coffeemaker on our counter. It took up a lot of space. This unit is streamlined and by having both the drip coffeemaker and pump espresso machine combined, it is perfect for our needs in creating a European coffee bar in our newly redesigned kitchen. We can wholeheartedly suggest this machine to others, as we intend to purchase a couple of these machines as gifts. We've had experience with BRIEL in the past and found their products great and their support people bery informative and helpful.

I agree with most reviewers that the espresso it produces is pretty good. Drip coffee is another story. There are some fundametal flaws with the design of the drip coffee compartment. Filling it up is an adventure. Half the water usually ends on the counter. There's no water level indicators inside the water tank, so you have to use the glass carafe to fill it with water. This usually results in a mess. In addition, you end up with less coffee than what you thought because some steam escapes from the top. As far as the espresso compartment is concerned there are some problems too. First of all, the cup size selector is NOT consistent. The dial is pretty inaccurate, so you'll have to experiment until you get it right. Depending on the grind size you may have to change the setting a lot. So keep an eye on it! Second of all, the heating element doesn't function very well. The green light (water temperature indicator) is erratic. It will be on, letting me know that the water is ready to make coffee, but it will then go off half way into making a serving. This usually happens if I want to make 2 servings, one after the other. To overcome this, I usually have to wait for the light to go off and come on again, which can add several minutes between espressos. Lately, this happens even if I'm only making one serving. Making coffee with tepid water? NOT NICE. In conclusion, if you're tight on budget this is a decent choice. If you can spend a little bit more, skip it.
If you are researching espresso machines I would suggest keeping an eye out for this guy because he's trying to throw the averages. My suggestion would be to NOT purchase any of the machines he recommends. Amazon, your ratings system obviously needs some more checks and balances. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review This Briel also gives a lot of control over the final product, due in part to its Auto Espresso Flow system. The espresso is brewed at the required 190 degrees F, and the machine has 15 bars of pump pressure. And it's speedy, making two cups in about 35 seconds. It has 1,360 watts of power, measures 16-1/4 by 12-1/4 by 10 inches (length by height by depth), and has a 10-year pump warranty.--A.J. However, it's also great to have the built in coffee grinder. This is a quality burr grinder, as I learned from the Briel people. You can grind fresh whole bean coffee, dose the ground coffee directly into the filter holder and instantly brew a perfect fresh espresso, from bean to cup! This machine is a home run and I would recommend it not only for home use but also for the office. Everyone likes a "fresh" coffee on command.
Then it blew my mind when I learned you can also use the coffee pod or serving. I've had illycaffe in the past and actually like the pods my friend had better. The extraction was even richer with the pod and there was absolutely no messy cleanup. I've had an entry level pump espresso machine from Krups and found it to be marginal at best. I'm sold on BRIEL and this MULTI-PRO machine is great. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the one with the built in grinder or the one with the built in 10-cup drip coffeemaker. Maybe I'll have to get both!
Same gasket problem as most folks had, but SOLVED! Coffee and coffee grain used to piss all over the place out from on top of the filter holder due to a badly deteriorated gasket. The technical support team for Briel here in Canada are very informative and very comprehensive. The numbers for support are: U.S.A. = 1-800-763-6699 You can obtain parts ordering information for the nearest distributor near you. The gasket is easily user-serviced and no take-apart is necessary. Simply flip the machine over, grab the smallest flat-head screwdriver you can buy, get a flashlight, locate the silicone gasket and gently pry it out with the screwdriver. Order a replacement gasket from one of the distributors, pop it back in place and start enjoying amazing espresso pulls again! The distributor they recommended to me was: Café Express Distributon They have replacement parts for all Briel models available. Enjoy folks! James
That is how long it took for this unit to fail. DO NOT BUY this machine, it is not a quality product and will fail. Within two weeks the seal on the tank ruptured and machine was dead.

Amazon.com Review Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine. Features Reviews (24)
After searching long and hard (and reading countless reviews) I decided upon this machine because of 1)price and 2)looks. This machine replaced an old Krups steam driven machine. I've now had it about a month. Here are my thoughts: 1)There is a learning curve - I had to adjust my burr grinder to get the correct setting, or adjust how hard I tamped, or else I found the liquid coming out around the edge of the filter holder. So,I suggest first buying good quality preground espresso, and get used to tamping it properly (ie. very lightly!). Then, after mastering the tamp, adjust your grinder so you get a grind that approaches what you bought (I used Illy). I found a 5.5 on my Braun grinder works best. Since then I've had no problem and perfect espressos. (the machine seems to work better with time). 2) It drips - no matter what they say it drips. If it didn't drip they wouldn't have a drip pan. It takes a rinse and its clean - no big deal. I have a sponge I use just for the machine to wipe up drips, etc. (also use a toothbrush periodically to clean the brew head). I don't want to turn anyone off; making espresso is messy and will always be unless you pop for the $1000 machines that do everything. 3)I don't have much use for the automatic serving system (the middle dial). Supposedly you can use it to control the amount of water, but I find it varies considerably between shots. I set it to the highest setting and then just turn the brew button on until my shot glass is full and then hit it again to turn it off. Takes around 25 seconds. In all, those are the problems I found - and they aren't biggies. For the price, I'm willing to deal with them as I don't think any of the other machines at a similar price would offer much difference. I'd definitely buy it again.
Moral: If it can break down, don't buy from Briel! Their service department will leave a bad taste in your mouth that their best espresso can't wash away. Seeing here that other people have had similar experiences, I believe the FTC should take a closer look at Briel.
It still performs very well. The espresso is second to none -- perfect temperature, very aromatic, and with a beautiful thick head of crema. The steam wand has lost a little power over the years (maybe 20%), but still performs well enough to give me a nice foamy cappucino. One trick I learned about maintenance: after the first 6 months, I noticed a big degradation in the quality of the espresso and the crema. I tried a few things -- won't detail them all here -- but the solution turned out to be unscrewing the screw that secures the brew head screen, then pulling the screen and out and cleaning it. The screen holes are TINY -- the best way I found to clean them was by using a sewing needle and painstakingly pushing the residue out of each hole. It takes 15-20 minutes to do this. But VOILA! When I reassembled it, the espresso was back to its rich, foamy perfection! I find that I have to perform this little maintenance task 2-3 times a year, even though I use filtered water. Oh well, not such a big deal I guess -- especially for such delicious espresso! I'm very happy with this machine
The first few shots of espresso that I made sucked. I'll be honest. IF YOU ARE NOT PATIENT, DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!! You need to experiment and find the right combination of grind and tamp. The machine, like any other machine priced under 8 billion dollars, IS NOT GOD! This being said, after I bought a nice Solis Maestro burr grinder to get a nice grind, and learned how to properly tamp, this machine delivers VERY consistent and delicious espresso. Once I learned the ins and outs, I was in love! There is a neat little door that flips up on the top of the machine that houses a filter basket and a nice scoop, and also acts as the door to the opening where water can be poured to fill the tank. The frother works pretty well too. Not fantastically, but with a little patience, it can make great froth for lattes, cappuccinos, and other hot and frozen espresso delights. If you have patience and love espresso, this machine is a perfect match! ... Read more

It did. The grind is perfect. The dosing is perfect. In fact, I _love_ this machine! And I can't begin to tell you the difference it's made in the quality of the espresso. (Both in terms of taste _and_ crema). I've not even had the problem with jamming reported by other users. So what is the problem? It's messy. It throws ground coffee everywhere: on the counter, the walls, the floor. . . I'm cleaning up around the thing at least twice a day, and the amount of ground espresso that lands on the counter usually adds up to enough to make a cup of espresso for every four I make using the doser. So, while I heartily recommend this machine, it's definately NOT the grinder for anyone concerned with state of their countertops.

The water does filter "slowly" but acceptable. I say "slowly" because the job of filtering water by gravity naturally takes some time. The water has to percolate down through the filter surface area; this just is a slow process without any help from positive or negative (vacuum) pressure. The pitcher holds 2 quarts. Frankly, if your water is bad-tasting, you will be filling this pitcher up many times a day. If that is the case, get an inline filter instead. This pitcher is ok for a small family, but for a large, water-drinking, Kool-aid making, tea drinking family you may need a lot more. We have one, and we use it a lot, so I have to say it's pretty good, overall.
The one annoyance, as is the case with all Brita products, is that it takes quite a while for the tap water that I add to filter through and into the pitcher.
