2-0 out of 5 stars It's not that great
We've been trying to get the clock/timer to work for five months. It still isn't right. The can opener is awkward and sloppy. If I open a can of tomato sauce, it splashes drops of sauce on the countertop. Opening a can of chicken broth results in a tidal wave.

I bought this can opener because I wanted an black undercouter opener that would match my kitchen and not clutter my counter. Next time, I'll buy a manual opener, in any color, and keep it in the drawer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great looking can opener, works great
This is a great can opener. Looks very sharp with the other black appliances. Works great. No problems whatsoever.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk Product - Terrible Customer Service
Whoever designed the mounting hardware for this thing is a total idiot. Horrible design.

Then once I finally got it mounted, it died within a few minutes of use. So I call Black and Decker customer service and the woman that answers the phone has her child at work with her. The child is screaming at the top of it's lungs and I can't hear a word she's saying. Then she keeps putting me on hold for several minutes at a time while she looks up such intelligent questions as "do you have it plugged in". Now I've got to cut the power cord off and mail it in so they will send me a new unit! Very strange.

Lets hope it doesn't take them a month to get the replacement here. It took Amazon that long to get me the first one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy To Use!Its a can open duh!
What should I say...First it looks great. It is the only can opener I have found that is black, folds down, has a clock, a knife sharpener, and hangs under the cabinet. When you use it is very easy I can just press it down and walk away until its done (no problems whatsoever in that area!) Its quite but not too quite. Good because I have a 10 month year old son - and a echoeeeeee house. Bad news is it doesn't come with a battery for the clock, the sticker for the electic cord comes undone very easily(that is something I will have to fix with tape I guess or buy a new one). The directions were very hard to use... I only say that because I didn't have a tape measure so go buy one if you don't have one. Other than that works great and I am very pleased!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great - hard to install
Not much to say....its a can opener that hangs over the cabinet, has a clock, and a knife sharpner. Its a little hard to install and the cover and the actual can opener magnet part (I don't know what to call it technically) don't go in smoothly (In other words you have to just push it with a little force...This is not a can opener for old people...But its great and looks cool! ... This cleverly designed appliance turns the chore of opening cans into ahands-free operation that's as much fun as it is effective. The opener is cordless so it goesanywhere, eliminating the need to carry a can to a countertop or mounted electric opener.Simply clamp the opener onto any size can and let go of the soft-grip, ergonomic handle. The opener then walks around the can on its own, shutting off automatically when the canis open. It's lightweight and recharges in a compact, 3-1/2-inch-diameter storage base.Standing in the base, the opener is 8 inches high. For easy cleaning, the removable bladeis dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Can Opener I Ever Had
After reading the recent negative reviews on this can opener, I had to write a review of my own. I bought this can opener in November, 2002, and I have had none of the problems mentioned by some of the other reviewers. The can opener may be a little tricky to attach to the can the first time or two you use it, but it is easy once you get the hang of it. The head is removable for easy cleaning, but it doesn't just fall off. You have to lift it all the way up and slide it out to remove it. It's easy to line up the opener in the charging base (there's only one way to put it). As far as making cans top-heavy, with small cans (up to condensed soup size), I just hold the opener and let the can turn. I keep my opener on the charging base, so I haven't had any trouble with it holding a charge. It has plenty of power and has opened every can I've ever tried it on. It may conk out tomorrow, but for now, I'm very happy with this can opener.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it so much I am buying one to reserve!
Best automatic can opener I have ever owned, and I have used up at least 4 or 5 in forty years. I have moderate Carpal Tunnel symptoms, and this helps avoid aggravating that condition. I find it easy to use on really large cans, unlike plug-in designs. Blade assembly does not come out unintentionally, and it is, again, easiest to clean of any I have used. It does not hold a strong charge left more than 24 hours outside cradle, but you just need to keep it in its charger. Get used to glancing at the notch which means it is seated properly in the charger. I agree, it would not work well for a left-hander. But then, what model does?

3-0 out of 5 stars Great if you're right handed
I had a stroke that affected my right side so I mainly use my left. I bought the one they have at Walmart that looks slightly different than this one but is the same thing just a different handle. It worked yes, but took me forever to get on the can right without the can sliding around. Need one that will work for right or left handers.

2-0 out of 5 stars pd
I have this can opener. I didn't buy it from Amazon. The can opener works great for my husband (right handed) but for me I fight it all the time. I am left handed and I think that might be why. If I use my right hand I have hardly any trouble. It's hard for me to use my right hand thou. There are times if my husband is not home I say forget it I didn't want to eat what is in the can that bad. It's just really hard for me to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Trash
I wish I had my old B&D cordless Can Opener. It was 100 times better than this "newer" model. I hate the way it works--or rather fails to work.
The unit is difficult to place securely in the charger. Sometimes one cannot tell if it's properly placed for recharging.
The cutter blade falls out easily, not to mention how difficult it is to get it on a can. Also it is so slow in cutting that I think that it may be possible to go on an extended vacation before it's finished cutting. ... Read more

When the hassle of bringing out heavy-duty mixers is unwarranted, reach for this peppy, cordless tool instead. Ideal for any kind of stirring or combining, the rechargeable mixer can effortlessly scramble eggs, mix cake batter, or blend healthy fruit shakes. The appliance head pivots and locks into place to easily transition from a right-angled hand mixer to the straight body customarily used for blending drinks. One end of the two-speed power button depresses to slowly stir while the other end clicks into place for whipping, beating, and mixing.

Ergonomically designed, the rubberized handle grips easily in one hand while its durable plastic body resists denting and scratching. A flat, level heel comfortably supports the tool between mixings. Constructed of metal and heavy-weight plastic, the three attachments include a standard beater, whisk, and drink mixer. A wall-mountable storage caddie houses the main blender body along with its three attachments while leaving room for the cord to be plugged in--store and recharge in parallel. When extended in drink-mixer mode without attachment, the tool measures 2-1/2 by 9 by 2-3/4 inches. Hand wash the motorized body with a warm, damp cloth; attachments are dishwasher-safe. This product includes a one-year limited warranty. -- Amy Arnold

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever design, works well
Very pleasing design, this can opener has a rounded, attractive appearance when tucked under your cabinets. As I see it, it has two main benefits:

1) As it hangs under your kitchen cabinet, it frees up space on your counters, leaving room for other appliances.

2) Because it is off the counter, you can open any size can with it. I really like this, because I often cook in bulk and need to open BIG cans--my old can opener did not have enough room between the counter and the top of the can opener to place large cans.

The can opener is also easy to clean, as the blade is in an assembly that easily slides out for cleaning.

The clock and timer aren't of much use to me as every darn appliance in my kitchen already has a clock.

One caveat: the installation instructions have you place the can opener far too much to the front of the cabinet so that it actually sticks out from the cabinet. If I had it to do over again, I would move it back under the cabinet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great idea, one minor flaw
Love the way it stays out of the way and off my counter. The only problem I have had with it is that it is sometimes hard to close and the can holder doesn't pop out when it opens. ... Read more

Everything from little tuna and soup cans to tall coffee and juice cans fits under this countertop electric opener. A built-in knife sharpener and bottle opener make it a convenient tool for busy households. The draw-through knife sharpener (not recommended for top-quality knives) on the opener's backside has two slots for different-size blades. Pressing the opener's lever activates the sharpener's grinding wheel. The bottle opener lies beneath the lever. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best electric can opener I've found
A few months ago my old electric can opener finally gave up and I headed to the nearest store to find a replacement. I am usually in a hurry to prepare a meal, and find the electric can opener absolutely indispensable for saving time and effort. To make a long story short, I returned two other can openers from well known makers because they just were not up to the task; i.e. they would tip forward with heavy loads, and required too much assistance from me to open a can. I then found and bought the Black & Decker EC1200 can opener, attracted by its sleek looks, and it seemed tall enough for juice cans etc. The first can I opened, a large 28oz. can of tomatoes, was an indication of things to come. The opener was steady, it was easy to lock the can under the cutting knife, and at the end of the opening process the built-in magnet held the lid in place, which is important to me. I don't like to fish for it in the contents of the can. By the way, I hardly ever use the knife sharpener or bottle opener, that was not a consideration. I have since opened too many cans to count, always with the same great results, it is hands free, solid, sturdy - and each time I am glad all over again that I don't have to do this by hand. Black & Decker has a winner, and everyone visiting my kitchen has expressed a desire to also buy this opener. I have a reputation as an excellent cook, and my "tools" in the kitchen have helped me get there. If you are tired of having your hands hurt from manually opening cans or have an old electric opener and need a new one -- save yourself aggravation and buy this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful can opener!
I'll admit, I spent years with the 'wonderful' manual can openers until I met this beauty!

There is quite a few electric can openers out there but the Black & Decker one looks, feels and more importantly works better. The EC1200 is not only functional but looks great too. A built in knife sharpener is ingenious as well as the ability to open large cans.

The built in magnet holds the lid when it is cut off and the ability of this device to hold up the big cans after cutting is impressive!

For the price there is absolutely no way you can go wrong! I've even bought this as a gift for a few people and they love it!

1-0 out of 5 stars An opening disappointment
From the start this product has been a disappointment. I have had difficulty using this opener from the first time to the present. It is difficult to align the can so the top can be removed. Now that it has had continued use it is beginning to be sluggish if it will work at all. This is even after I have cleaned the device thoroughly.
When I purchase a replacement I will be sure to field test the new product. I have been pleased with Black & Decker in the past but this incident will make me cautious in the future. I am sorry B&D but this time it was a bust.

2-0 out of 5 stars Label in Food
I you like tiny strips of the can's label in your food, buy this can openner. Everytime I use this can opener, I have to pick little pieces of label out of my food. It is bad enough that I will probably never buy another Black & Decker can opener again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and hard to use
Many people in my household agree that it is a piece of "work" You have to try 3 or 4 times before the blade catches on and it starts to work. More than half the time, when we try to use it, it doesn't catch the can correctly, it just spins. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't Opener
The title is a more accurate description of this item. It worked fine for a short time then got noisier and had to be backed up with a hand operated opener. The knife sharpener is simply a fixed stone. The bottle opener must be operated by first tilting entire unit backward as it won't accommodate tall bottles. Cheap and ineffective.

4-0 out of 5 stars works well-good price
This can opener works well, is quieter than previous can openers I have owned. I haven't used the knife sharpener so I can't rate that aspect. It looks good. Worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Works only for a bit
I bought this a while ago and it worked great for a couple of months. After that it has totally stopped working. the can gripping mechanism has some what come loose and it can no longer grip the can to open it. Currently, its a worthless piece of junk in my kitchen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value
We have used this product for about 3 weeks. It has worked as advertised so far. It holds large cans in place. Opens all cans with ease. If the product continues to work over time, it will be the best can opener we have purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to use, fun to watch

4-0 out of 5 stars great spacesaver!
a nice spacesaving item. assembly requires that you drill holes in your cupboard; if you are ok with that, this is a great product.

1-0 out of 5 stars fire warning
We had a house fire that started in the kitchen. The fire marshall attributed the fire to our Black and Decker Spacesaver Can Opener!

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great after 7 years!!!
We received this as a housewarming gift and it has worked great ever since. Its very easy to clean the handle pops right off. Also it really is a spacesaver. I have so many kitchen items on my counters and its great that it is out of the way. I've moved to a different home and you can unscrew it from the cabinet and take it to your new home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great After 4 Years
I've had this for 4 years and it's a fantastic kitchen tool. It has opened every size can & I have never once pulled out the manual opener. The installation was frustrating. It may be designed for different width cabinets. We used some wood shims (thin wood strips) inside the cabinet to attach with the mounting strip and it's very secure. Maybe you could try shims underneath the cabinet if clearance is your problem. Bottom line - frustrating installation, fantastic opener

5-0 out of 5 stars Have had mine for 4 years and it still works great
I just wanted to say that this has been a great tool in my kitchen for nearly 4 years now. I have NEVER had to pull out the manual can opener. The installation was not easy. I don't remember if the directions were poor or what the exact problem was. However, we were able to mount it very securly under the kitchen cabinet by putting 2 wood shims (thin pieces of wood) in the cabinet and then screw the mounting brackets into that. I understand the frustration of rigging up something, but really - this is a fantastic opener. I would think that shims under the cabinet would help with the clearance problem that another reviewer had. ... Read more

Convenient when in use, inconveniently taking up counter space when it's not, an electric can opener can be more trouble than it's worth. Black & Decker solves the problem with this compact model. It mounts underneath a cabinet, where space is wasted anyway, and, as if that weren't enough, the opener's face pulls down when it's needed and then snaps back up to conserve even more space--and to look neat and tidy. A magnet extends automatically to secure lids. For cleanup, the blade assembly pops off at the push of a button and can be put in the dishwasher. Made of gleaming white plastic, this can opener is barely noticeable and looks good when it is noticed. --Fred Brack ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's great!
I have had this can opener for 5 years and the only reason I am purchasing another is that my current one looks worn-out. There is nothing broken and it still works great. The knife sharpner is a blessing. This opener even opens very large cans with ease.

2-0 out of 5 stars WHY Do I KEEP Buying This??! Please Suggest An Alternative!
Hmmm, I just realized that this would have been the FOURTH time replacing this SAME can opener within the span of 5 year! I've read a few of the reviews and see now that the flaws in this particular opener are common!
The only reason I keep replacing it with this same one is because it mounts under the cabinet, up and off the counter tops..I think that's it's only quality! It no longer comes with a built-in knife sharpener..guess B&D figured they could make even more money selling a knife sharpener alone as a small appliance! The piercer that opens the cans quickly became dull to the point it will no longer open a can without force. IF I am successful in piercing a can, I have to hold it so it won't fall and again I have to force "walk" the can around as it will not make the revolution on it's own.
Can anyone suggest a GOOD under cabinet mount can opener please??

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking for an alternative
We received this can opener in 2000 and have used it once or twice a day for the past 3 years. For the past two months, it will cut 1/2" into the can, then stop. You have to jerk the can out to reposition the can under the can opener, then you can go another 1/2". IT would take FOREVER to get a can open this way. I have resorted to my hand held can opener. This can opener is not strong enough to open heavier metal cans (like Pedigree dog food). I need an alternative, don't want to get the same thing after looking over the reviews.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor choice
This unit worked for about 5 months, then it decided that it would start dropping cans. Now 3 months later it won't even hold the can or even open it.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Knife Sharpener!
I received one this afternoon as a replacement for a B & D under counter unit whose can holder broke after 5 years. When I opened it up, there's no longer a knife sharpener, the instructions indicated the EC 900 has the knife sharpener. This coupled with the poor reviews has induced me to return it without using it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!
I've always liked Black&Decker, until this product. I received one as a gift and thought it would be great because it was tall. Finally I could open coffee cans and other large cans. Wrong, large cans jamed the opener and the thing would just spin and grind the same spot. Then after a month it broke completly. I thought it's Black & Decker I must have just received a bad unit. So I bought another one. Same results in about a week. I now have a Oxo hand opener and love it. Its the type that opens without leaving a sharp edge. I wasted my money twice, don't waste yours once. Don't buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars B&D Really Screwed This One Up!
I came here specifically to write this review so others would not feel the pain I did. Now, only us lazy folks would go looking for an electric can opener, but that's besides the point. The purpose of this device is to open a can faster and easier than a manual can opener. It is so hard to use this darn thing that I inevitably use my manual one to open the can if it takes me more than 3 attempts. Please don't buy this. Buy a good quality manual can opener.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best
I trust the Black & Decker name but must say that this particular product is a disappointment. It isn't user friendly. It takes several attempts to get the can hooked and opened and by that time it has shredded the paper label in which some pieces always end up in my food. My advice for you would be to make sure can is cleaned before opening so you don't have a problem if any paper falls back into the can.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I have never been able to use automatic can openers, so at my house it's operator error if the thing doesn't work the first time. I like that it's tall. The lids always stay on the can opener after I have removed them. It stores very easily and cleans up pretty nicely. It does shred the wrapping on the can, but I usually throw mine away. Never had a problem with the paper going in the food. (?see comment below?) Overall, I think it's a great buy. Very sleak, I sure don't mind leaving it on countertop!

1-0 out of 5 stars Pass it up!
I thought this would be a great can opener. Not so. It works with extra tall cans, and that's about it. Don't even think about trying to open small cans, such as a 6 oz. or so. It just will not work. This can opener does indeed shred labels and is most difficult to line up with the place where it's supposed to lock on to the lid. Since I bought this can opener, it has taken me an average of about three attempts to open any given can.

In short, I'm taking this thing back. My manual can opener works better than this! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst can opener I have ever owned!!!
Bought this to replace a cheap Rivan can opener that had a broken lid-retaining magnet. Biggest mistake. It routinely drops cans - even light ones like soup and mushrooms. Difficult to attach the can to it - and even harder to clean. Aviod this model at all costs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disposable can opener?
I bought this Black and Decker can opener in January-it died in 3 months! Just purchased a Rival can opener at Target, hopefully it will last longer.

1-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
We received two of these for a wedding gift. My main use for a can opener is opening large dog food cans for my three dogs.A can opener doesn't do you much good when it won't open the cans you primarily use. So, when it wouldn't open a can I unpacked the other can opener we were going to take back. It wouldn't work either- so we took both back and bought the B and D gizmo instead- it works great.

I really like this brand! It is reliable and easy to use. The power pierce feature is great. It does not tip over and handles large and heavy cans. ... Read more
