Amazon.com Review

Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and theside-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents.Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Like most standard manual openers, this unit is designed for right-handed operation. It measures 7-1/2 inches long and is safe for the dishwasher. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

  • Dishwasher-safe
  • Leaves no sharp edges on can or lid
  • Patented side-wind mechanism cuts easily
  • Makes no contact with can contents

5-0 out of 5 stars A year of use and we still love it!
We've had this can opener for a year now and still marvel at how well (and easily!) it works. First, let me say that we actually bought one of the 'early' smooth edge can openers (yes, the ones you saw on the info-mercials) and it was an absolute nightmare (took an engineering degree to figure out how to make the thing work!); this is nothing like that! It's so simple to use, doesn't take a lot of time to figure out or line up with the can rim, latches on easily with the first try, and turns so easily and comfortably. And, the smooth edge feature works just as promised - no sharp edges anywhere at all (also, doesn't shove the can lid and/or opener down into the can making a mess and introducing the risk of contamination). Couldn't be happier with this purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Can Opener Ever!
I can't believe I used to struggle with a super cheap metal no frills can opener. I also can't believe I almost bought an electric one because I was tired of hurting my hands turning impossible knobs. I was trying to stay away from electric openers because they're almost impossible to clean and seem to get gunky really fast. I had almost lost hope. Then I found this little wonder....
The best features of this can opener are:
-Super Easy to turn handle, almost feels like nothing's happening but then pop! the lid is off! I think I gave a little yipe of surprise the first time I used it and my husband thought I'd cut my finger off! No way, I don't think you could cut yourself if you tried using this thing.
-The lid NEVER falls into the can, never again do you have to fish the lid of the can out of the soup or tomatoes, or peaches..
-Super sleek looking, super comfy to hold
-Little metal 'jaws' to pry the lid off the can
-NO SHARP EDGES, nothing to cut holes in your garbage sack, no little fingers getting cuts, it's great.
Do your hands a favor, buy this super easy to use super fabulous can opener. The amazon.com price is a steal for what they sell for in my local stores.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Can Opener Ever!
Hi. After years of fighting worthless electric can openers that accomplished less than a hand can opener, I bought one of these can openers. This can opener works so well you don't even think it is doing anything, but then, voila! the entire can top is unsealed smoothly and just lifts off the can! It is simple to operate, and works perfectly everytime I use it! It actually had me looking for excuses to open more cans. lol It is a large size can opener and easily gripped and operated. You can't go wrong with this baby. I plan to buy them as Christmas presents for everyone this year. You'll be happy with one too I bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Good Grips product
In the Good Grips line, OXO has taken a wide assortment of traditional, familiar kitchen tools and radically improved them through some design and engineering tinkering. In many cases, you don't even realize how badly the old versions worked until you try the Good Grips version.
This can opener is no exception; it works far better than any can opener I've ever used. Make sure you read the directions on the packaging, because you align it on the can a bit differently than a traditional hand-operated can opener. But once you master that, you're golden. No more having the opener "jam" or go "off track" halfway through the process, no more having to tear off a can lid that was only partially cut through by the opener, no more having to muster all of your muscle to open a can, and no more sharp edges on to nick your fingers as you remove the lid. It rocks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great investment
Looking at the other reviews, I ordered this with concerns about it being not user-friendly. However, I read the little booklet, followed the steps, and had no trouble. This is wonderful for people like me who have carpal tunnel. I have no trouble opening cans now but have to make a mental note to rotate the lever backward to disengage the cutting wheel before trying to lift the lid. This is worth the investment. Painfree can opening! ... Read more

With a large, smooth, plastic twist handle that fits nicely in the palm, this can opener operates with a minimum of effort. 5-0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and easy to use
We've had this can opener for several years now. I still have one of our old, el cheapo can openers which I sometimes use if I can't find the OXO. The OXO is so much easier to use - it tracks the can rim without jumping off, it cuts the metal easily, knob is easy to turn. Also, I don't always get to drying my washing up quickly, but this can opener shows no signs of rust spots.

5-0 out of 5 stars better, faster, easier than an electric can opener
I grew up with electric can openers that inevitably broke or had a hard time attaching to the can, then the contents often spilled as I removed it from the magnetic holder. Back then the alternative was a hand-held manual one that was actually painful to use.

After marrying we bought an electric can opener which broke soon thereafter. While waiting for the day when it was to be repaired (which ended up being never), I bought this OXO manual can opener thinking it would be a temporary and inexpensive solution. It is awesome. We have been using ours for about 5 years and it is still going strong. It is fast, easy to use, and comfortable. There is no pain or discomfort when holding it. It cuts the can cleanly and is just plain easier to use than electric can openers. We are sticking with the OXO can opener and not going back to electric openers.

I highly recommend this can opener, ditch your electric can opener and make things easier on yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very smooth operation
I can't believe I'm writing a review for a can opener, but this item is so good I just have to. This is the smoothest, most effortless can opener I've ever used. It just glides around the can. We've used cheap grocery store openers in the past, some have worked ok, others were poor at best, but they all went in the trash as soon as we tried this one. My wife as well as my two sons (ages 8 and 13) feel the same way. A remarkable device.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Can Opener Value on the Market
As a former Chef I am picky about using only quality kitchen utensils, and I heartily endorse this can opener. Most manual can openers have a tendency to hang up or run off the lip of the can, but not this beauty. It stays on the lid without ever jumping off and has incredible ease of operation due to it's large mechanical advantage and handle construction.

This may look like a cheap can opener from the local retailer, but it's ease of use, durability, and the fact that it is dishwasher safe (many aren't) makes this the best value for the can opener dollar imaginable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works great but...
...probably because it's new. I got it because of the reviews others have left but I don't see much difference between this can opener and one from a .99 cents store except for maybe the way it looks. Too expensive if you ask me... ... Read more

With its large, easy-to-operate turning-mechanism, this can opener does its job with minimal effort on your part. 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for a can opener
Nothing extraordinary. It opened cans smoothly for about four months before I had any problems with rusting. The annoying things about it are the handles. The knob is large and hollow, and collects water, making it frustrating to remove from the dishwasher without drenching yourself. The soft handle covers slip off easily, and fill with water as well. It does its job, but I would never buy another one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best can opener I've ever owned!
I've had my Great Grips for over a year and wouldn't trade them for anything else! I like the big rubber grips which makes it easy to hold on to and opening a can is less of a struggle than it used to be. Once you've locked the cutting edge into the lid it doesn't slip out like some others I've had. I always hand wash my OXO and it still looks like brand new! I've bought the OXO Good Grips as a gift for my niece and nephew who are just getting started with their own kitchens because they deserve the best!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not up to the OXO standard.
Overall, this is a sturdy, handy and attractive can opener with a built-in bottle opener for pop-top caps. Its sharp teeth and beveled blade bite into lids of all sizes with ease. Its ergonomic design and big, pressure-absorbing, outstanding non-slip grips allow you comfortable, daily use. Its large, easy-to-turn knob and hefty body that fit comfortably into your hands, make it require less force to operate than other, more traditional openers do, keeping you away from cramped hands and other tension related injuries. Its elegant, stylized, standard OXO shape will fit perfectly with the rest of your OXO utensils in the kitchen or in the bar.
But, unlike the rest of the products from the OXO Good Grips line, this one is not such a great value and it is below the established standards of superior quality, unsurpassed durability and flawless performance of the OXO brand.
While most of its metal parts are stainless-steel some others are not, like the screws holding the blade and the teeth, and will begin to rust after a couple of years of normal, everyday use. Also, the rubber grips are glued, and will change from "fixed" to "removable" after just a few months of function. Moreover, although it is manually easy to clean, it is also advertised as dishwasher-safe, but it retains water inside the grips after they have become unglued and also inside the large hollow of the knob, making it impossible to retrieve from the dishwasher without getting drenched or making a mess.

After submitting this product to two years of normal use, mine will soon be replaced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than other can openers
Easy to turn, easy on the hands. Much better than the cheap metal-handle ones I had purchased previously. One minor complaint: I put it in the dishwasher with the blade end down, and a little white stuff then leaked out of the long handles and stained some of the metal. I think it is just glue residue. I cannot scrub it off. Fortunately, the white stuff doesn't come off on cans or food, and it hasn't affected the usability. I cannot remember whether I put it on the top rack or the bottom rack of the dishwasher.
I would still buy it again, because it is better than others.

1-0 out of 5 stars After about a year, handle is too hard to turn
Worked well for a while - but no better than the usual steel hardware store model. The shape of the turning handle may look appealing but it is not particularly ergonomic. Its sloping ends tend to encourage fingers to slide off.

After a while (a year?) it is very difficult to turn the handle even when the can opener is not on a can. Essentially unusable. I am looking for a new one. ... Read more

You'll throw away all those other jar openers in your kitchen drawer after using this jar opener by Oxo. With its graduated opening, the opener fits over any lid size and gives you unprecedented leverage to battle the most stubborn of lids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works as well as any other I've tried
I haven't found a jar opener that works better than this one, even though it isn't perfect. The lever action works much better than the kind that require you to grip the jar lid and turn, but the "teeth" will occasionally slip and scratch the jar lids.

Works really well on plastic lids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Muscle for those of us without any :)
I love this jar opener. I'd give it a 5, but it does occasionally slip off the jar (what opener doesn't?) and it does leave grooves in the lid at times. However, 9 times out of 10, it does an effortless job of opening even the toughest jars. I've even used it on plastic bottle tops for sticky Karo Syrup, and soda tops that have pressurized themselves onto the bottle. The positives far outweigh the negatives with this tool. It's size is great, too! It's able to accomodate small caps to large jar lids. I even catch my old jar opener (my husband!) using it once in a while :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Useless
From the moment I got this jar opener, it was a waste. It has no traction at all and leaves marks on jar lids. I bought it to replace an old, basic jar opener that I misplaced, but I might as well have flushed the money down the drain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't live without it!
I have had this for over 5 years. I use it at least once a week to open a bottle or a jar that I just can't grip. Works fabulously!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, a can opener you can get excited about!
Who'd think a cheap kitchen tool could excite such passion among its owners? I bought mine after using one at a friend's house, and have since thrown out all the other openers in the kitchen drawer.

It's easy to use, easy to clean (dishwasher safe!) and more convenient than an electric. Worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lasts for years, easy to use
The most comfortable can opener I've ever used. I've had mine for more than five years, and it still works great--no rust, no problems. A friend broke the locking mechanism three years ago (by pulling the handles open rather than pressing the button), but it still works. I have to hold the handles closed, but it still takes considerably less force than holding a regular can opener on the can.

I've bought these for friends, and we couldn't be happier with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars open with ease
I think this is the best can opener in the world. Big soft handle, sharp cutter, well made. Lock it on and turn. The handle turns with little or no effort. I've used mine for several years and it's still as good as new.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most exciting can opener I've ever owned!
We've had ours for over two years and it still looks like new. Durable, lightweight, easy to grip (of course!), smooth operating all the way around the can, and produces a nice clean cut with no jagged edges to cut your finger on--what more could you ask for?

2-0 out of 5 stars Great until it breaks
The locking mechanism is plastic and eventually breaks (with light use mine broke in about 1 year) By then some of the teeth on the lower wheel (that holds the can while the upper wheel cuts) were worn and getting it to hold the can while it opened was tricky. Until about the last month it worked wonderfully. Too short lived to give it any higher a score. ... Read more

No more tugging, no more pulling, no more aching, red-marked hands. This cork pull allows easy turning of its soft, comfortable knob. Once the nonstick screw is anchored in the cork, simply continue turning the knob in the same direction to lift the cork from the neck of the bottle. It's suitable for any size bottle, and the clear plastic lets you watch as the cork pull does its work.

2-0 out of 5 stars worked for awhile, but...
I agree with the previous review about cork-punctures... happens all the time. Worse, however, is the fact that after a relatively short period of time, the inner workings of my particular model broke, leaving it useless. When it was still operational it worked well enough, but the fun didn't last long. As a result, though even Consumer Reports rated this item very good, I'd have to recommend against it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
This wine bottle opener is a real disappointment. I noticed it is no longer in stock here, but felt the need to warn people about this item. The bottle opener piece works in such a way that if you screw in the cork all the way (like you are suppose to with this particular model) it will punch through the bottom of the cork every time and you will get cork in your wine. The only thing good about it is that it lines the corkscrew up with the center of the cork, but that doesn't really matter when you are drinking or picking cork out every time. On the side of the corkpull there is a round little sharp piece to cut the top piece of the bottle to get to the cork. Nice idea, but it doesn't work. It's not sharp enough and there is no way to sharpen it. Plus it is too close to your hands when you pull on the handle that you might even cut yourself. Stick with the old fashion cork screw. Don't waste your money on this wannabe fancy one. ... Read more

The OXO can opener works very well and easily, due to the huge turning handle. That same handle makes it hard to store in a small space in a drawer. The lid opener is so-so ... a rubber grip works just as well.
