Very Tough But Soft on Knife's Edge
I got this board a year ago, and it still looks good on my counter. So far, I only had to add mineral oil twice in the year. I used it to chop heavy stuff, and it's very sturdy yet it has an excellent "give" on my $100s knife's edge. The only setback, is during cleaning time, it's very heavy (good way for weight-lifting exercise). Pretty dang good board
My wife bought this board and she loves it. Despite what the other reviews have said, our board works great. We called Catskill for advice on how to keep the board from splitting and they gave us great advice. I highly suggest this board. We'll be buying them for gifts now.

Waste of money
Waste of money. I read the reviews and purchase the board anyway. I figured if I condition the board first with mineral oil it would last longer. I had the board for 7 weeks before it broke in half. I wish it would have broke sooner so I could have sent it back. Buyer Beware, don't buy this!! I should have taken the advise from the people who purchased this before me.

Not a good one
I bought this board along with another brand. This one falls off the sink and is constantly dumping my cuttings in the sink. It also warped within one month of my purchasing it. The wood has also splintered. Not my idea of a good cutting board. I would not recommend it to my friends, nor would I purchase it as a gift.

Split within a year
I purchased this block in Dec. 2002. We moved into our new home in January 2003 and this block split in two places by the end of 2003. We treated it exactly as it says - lots of mineral oil and only occasional washing. Disappointing, now I am inclined to buy a thinner cutting board.

No splitting issues
I was concerned about splitting after all the reviews I read. I called Catskill Craftsmen direct, and they informed me that the splitting issues were the result of poor storage and improper care. When I purchased mine, I oiled it regularly (twice a week for the first month) and stored it upright on its edge. I haven't had an issue at all. You can't put this through a dishwasher or not oil it in very dry climates. Living in Louisiana, I was a little worried, but my chopping block is fine. Plus Catskill told me to call them direct with anymore issues. Great chopping block, great customer service!

Another one bites the dust
Mine lasted a little longer than some of these others, but I still haven't gotten the use out of it I'd expected. It developed a 4 inch long crack along a seam after 3 yrs. Very disapointing, and judging by the other comments a common cause of failure.

Yes, this cutting board looks great and is wonderful to use, but bottom line: it failed after 3. Buy something else!

I'm on my 2nd cutting slab.
My replacement cutting slab is now warped and rocks back and forth. The 1st one was replaced by Amazon after it developed a 2 inch crack. I would stop offering this product.

Mine Split Also - Forewarned is Forearmed
I purchased my Cutting Slab in early June 2003 and have enjoyed using it. However, in late September it developed a major 3 inch split along the edge. Seems like since there have been a number of failures you should discountinue carrying this item and offer us a refund.

Craftsmen's Latest Set My Toes A-Tappin'
As a blind architect, I often find myself with plenty of time on my hands. Very few people are willing to entrust their building and renovations projects to a sightless person, and while under ordinary circumstances I'd agree with their rationale, in my own case I have to say that their fears are misplaced: I'm entirely capable of designing a building that's sleekly modern while incorporating some of the good old-time architectural hallmarks. I'm like Howard Roarke would have been had he been a team player, and blind, of course.
Anyway, I was very happy to receive the latest Catskill Craftsmen album. This record extends and clarifies the unique vision they presented in their last release, "Muscatel, Muscatel, Sell My Wife for Muscatel." The first track, "Stump, You're On My Mind," is a nightmarish glimpse at lawn maintenance. The second number is a real barnburner: "Those Are My Apples, I'm Going to Litigate." The third, "If The Pickup's Rockin' Outside of the Bar," is a bittersweet ode to broken relationships and wasted youth. Then there's Clint's solo, "This is Clint's Solo," followed by Sonny's own star turn, "Can't Sing and Play Drums Like Levon Helm, Guess I'll Kill Myself." Nash and KY come on strong with one of their typically spirited harmony tracks, "Snowmobile Trail, Come My Way, Shower Me With Well-Earned Cash."
This fabulous LP drove my wife out of the house. I'm going to keep playing it.

Fuzzy board...not smooth!
I was searching for a cutting board in a good size that comes with a groove, came across this and according to the reviews, everything seems positive. Boy, was I disappointed!

I've carefully oiled the board with mineral oil almost everyday for the first week I bought the board, and wash it with mild soap and water as instructed. However, there seems to be fuzz (or rather splinters!) on both surfaces of the board. I tried to oil the board again, but it still seems dry (though it has never been used). I couldn't risk having my food stuck with splinters from the board, and therefore had never gotten around to use it. I'd rather go with a Henckels board anytime.

A waste of money, would not recommend.

Not a bad Cutting Board
Board is indeed a quality board, but with a name like Craftsmen, I had expected a bit higher quality.

Very beautiful board
I love this board. The board I received has a beautiful grain and great craftsmanship. The size is perfect for me - it's long and wide enough for all my uses, including dicing long carrots. The groove is a nice feature, and it's nice to have a reversible board - I usually cut bread on the non-grooved side. The board is thick enough so it's sturdy, but not so thick that it's too heavy.

Another use of the groove - fat carrots that won't fit in the juicer have to be cut the long way - they fit nicely in the groove and don't roll.

Not too much to say about a cutting board, but I sure love this one, and the price is nice, too.

This Is A Good Buy
I bought the "Turkey" version of this cutting board. My fear was that it might not withstand sharp knives, but I was wrong. My husband had to put little feet on the bottom as mine did not have the feet, although advertised that it did. However, it's still a good buy. Using mineral oil once a month keeps it in good condition. I use it every day and there are no cuts in the wood from my sharpest chef knife. For the price, it is the best and promises years of good service. It's also large enough to prepare several meal ingredients, such as herbs and salad preps. You won't go wrong on this one.

Large, tough, and sturdy
I must say I was pleasently surprised when I got this board. I just replaced a Farberware board that I have had for about 11 years, it finally split after 11 years of dropping it between my range and our cabinets (its normal storing place).

This board is larger by about 1" on each side. I like the rubber stoppers on the bottom that elevate the board off the counter. They do well as nonstick stoppers as well.

This board is strong. My daughter has decided to use it as an imaginary surf board to my chagrine. She also enjoys the pictures on the board.

The only problem with the board might come if space is an issue. The larger dimensions and the rubber stoppers do make the board more difficult to store.

All in all I look forward to at least 10 years of service from this board.

Lip? We don't need no stinkin' "lip"!
The only problem with this finely crafted lazy-susan is that it has a lip. If you don't know much about lazy-susans, or haven't thought about it, and are considering getting one, recognize that a lip is a bad thing. Basically, it limits what can be placed on it.

Do you want to balance a 20-inch serving tray on it? The lip will make the tray dip. This is true of anything larger than the given diameter. It will especially annoy you if you wish to use it to ice a cake, as the center may dip, and crack the cake.

Lazy susans are designed primarily as a convenient rotating table. Trying to incorporate the serving tray into it is unnecessary foolery. It will also make it more difficult to clean up, as using a separate tray, as is normally done, means you only have to wash the tray, and not the heavy wooden lazy susan.

Trust me, lazy susans don't come with lips for good reason. Don't fall prey to ignorance. Go get the real thing. ... Read more

break into two pieces
It worked great for a month and then suddenly broke into 2 pieces. It is not an accident. I handled it carefully. Its quality is really bad. I have another unkown brand one bougth 2 years ago which still works just fine.

Cracked board
I agree this is an ideal cutting board for a small kitchen. But the one we received split at the corner just a week after we started using it.

I have lost count of how many I have purchased!
For chopping vegetables, there is nothing like chopping them with a nice sharp knife on a great wood chopping block. The groove helps to catch the juices from various vegetables, like tomatoes. You might want to consider a polypropylene board with a groove for other vegetables, such as beets! One thing I discovered quite by accident, you can't chop chocolate on a wooden board. It will pick up a strange flavor from the wood. I suggest polypropylene or marble for chopping chocolate. You will want at least two of these great boards. Not Worth the Money
This board is not worth the money. We owned it for all of two weeks and it broke into pieces. Do not buy! Fair warning.

VERY UNHAPPY WITH THIS BOARD.
I am very unhappy with this Board by Catskill Craftsman. I had high hopes for this board. I loved the looks of it. When it arrived I felt it was dry & rough. I first used an entire 8 oz. kit of a Woodenware Care & Repair Kit that I had purchased for $10.00. I had read the reviews here & knew I was taking a chance - but I'm very gentle on all items & knew I would take excellent care of it. Yet 3 months later, with never being washed in the dishwasher, hand-washed, always dried off & reoiled; it has cracked in two places. I feel this board is defective. I wouldn't reccomend it at all. ...I would never reccomend anyone wasting their money on this board. The quality control & the product are poor at best.

Don't buy this board for cutting meats
Typically when you buy a board with grooves around it, it is to make sure that you capture the juices when cutting meats so they don't spill onto the table or counter.

Unfortunately, this board developed cracks within weeks of its purchase, in spite of proper care (not soaking it, just wiping clean after use). Due to its low price I didn't bother complaining or returning it. But it is worthless for cutting meat, which is why I purchased it. The juices get captured in the groove and then leak out through the cracks.

Varying quality?
Maybe I'm not sous-chef enough for this cutting board, but from the varied reviews here I'd venture a guess that the quality of these boards is hit-or-miss. I have attempted to care for it and oil it, but it has warped and cracked -- still useable, but the handy groove for catching liquid doesn't work so well when everything dribbles down a crack.

I noticed that my board is made up of small "square-shaped" wood pieces while the model on the site seems to be made of longer rectangular wood pieces. This could explain the difference.

Excellent deal
I haven't a clue what the other two people did to their boards (mistreated), but I've had mine for over 6 months, I use it at least 3 times a week, usually more. I have oiled it 3 times and it still looks just as good as the day I got it. It's perfect for when you don't have alot of room for a large board, this one stands up nicely at the back of the counter under the cabinets.

Warped After Two Years
Be aware that this board is constructed such that is cannot help but warp over time. Mine was treated with care, oiled regularly and dried after each washing. If you want a lasting cutting board, buy a maple end-grain board. It will outlast a dozen of these cheapos.

More than just a turkey board
Sure enough, the new present to myself was just the thing my culinary skills needed to hone themselves even further. The board itself is easy to handle, easy to clean, and very presentable. In other words, if you are expecting company, show them this board and they will be most impressed. The surface is smooth which makes for usefulness in fileting fish, cutting veggies and the like. Be cognizant of the fact that the board is ideally used for turkey stuffing, though I find it just as useful for preparing stir fried vegetables before dumping them into my wok. A prize in any one's culinary arsenal.

Useful and Sturdy
I love having the edge measurements as well as the circular measurments. I wish I had a cabinet big enough for this wonder tool, but like some of my favorite baking sheets, this will have to live on top of the counter. After use, it cleans up very nicely, and a coat of mineral oil makes it look like a million dollars. I'm very satisfied.

Beware! Ours was destroyed in shipping.
We're still deciding whether to just return the item for a refund or get a new one. I kid you not, this thing arrived in (well halfway in) a thin plastic envelope. No packing material of any kind. The envelope was shredded and the pastry board looked like it had been dropped, run over by a truck, and who knows what else. If you order this, call and/or e-mail and ask them to pack it for shipping! In fairness, the board looks like it would be very nice if it arrived in good shape.

I love the size of this board- lots of surface area but not so heavy that I can't move it easily. The wood is high quality, looks nice. In addition to the pastry templates, there are ruling increments on the back that are in cm as well as inches.
Both sides are smooth.
