Amazon.com Review

For thin, even slices of firmer cheese, a cheese plane is essential. This version, with a flexible but solid stainless-steel head, lets you cut from any angle, and the sharp blade glides along your cheddar, your Gouda, or whatever the flavor of the day. Attractive as well as useful, it's as suitable for the cheese board at parties as on the kitchen counter. When the party's over, you can store it on a hanger--the handle has an oversize opening. The Good Grips line features durable, nonslip flexible handles on every product. Ergonomically designed to fit the palm comfortably and softly, the pressure-absorbing processed rubber handle puts less tension on the hands, while providing an outstanding grip. Made from the same material as dishwasher gaskets are constructed of, the handles are slip-proof, wet or dry, as well as dishwasher-safe. Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality value.
This is a handy and attractive cheese plane with a very sharp blade that cuts from every angle, glides easily and produces thin, clean and effortless slices every time. Its sharp blade never seems to need sharpening, and its hefty body fits comfortably in the hand, making it require less force to operate than the more traditional cheese planes do, and rendering it perfect for either firm or soft cheese.
Like the rest of the products from the OXO Good Grips line, this one is a great value of superior quality, unsurpassed durability and flawless performance. Its ergonomic design and big, pressure-absorbing, outstanding non-slip grip, complete with flexible fins to accommodate your fingers and an oversized hole for easy hanging, allow you comfortable, daily, wet or dry use. Its elegant, stylized shape makes it perfect to move back and forth between the kitchen and the dinner table.
Its easy-to-clean, simple construction and dishwasher-safe, hard-wearing materials make this a tool that you will be able to depend on for years, and its stainless-steel metal parts will permanently keep your rust worries away.
After submitting this product to over two years of normal use, mine it's still just like new. I even use it on blocks of chocolate, to make fast-melting slices when I bake.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine cheese plane.
Not an item everyone needs or wants, but if you want it, you want it perfect. This is the one. Fits the hand like a, well, like a cheese plane. Excellent craftsmanship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any way you slice it...Good Grips Rule!
I use my cheese plane for cheddar cheese. This is a slicer for softer cheeses. Grilled Cheese anyone? This will cut those cheese slices nice and thin so they will melt fast.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good IF
If you use a cheese plane or have plans to use one, this is a good one. If you do not use a cheese plane, you can probably get by without this.

It is good at making uniform slices of cheese which are on the thin side. A vegetable peeler is better for making parmesan curls.

As usual it has OXO's ergonomic, grippy handle. I like using this utensil for making cheese slices for an appetizer tray. ... Read more

This multigrater can be used standing upright or over any size bowl. Withtwo separate textured surfaces, grating can be coarse or fine. Smartly placed nonskid feet anchor the multigrater and provide stability and resistance to slipping and sliding. Its stainless-steel surface is dishwasher-safe; plus, it's easy to store with a snap-apart mechanism that allows it to lay flat or folded in a drawer.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent grater no problems
contrary to the claim of some reviewers this grater comes apart easily for cleaning. Mine has no cracks in the plastic and has worked very well for me the entire time I've had it. I strongly recommend it especially at the price its being sold for.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fails the test
My wife and I have had very good experiences with OXO products, and after handling this grater in a store we expected to continue that experience.

However, after a very short period of use (we use a grater every day for grating cheese - both hard and firm - for personal use) the plastic frame began to crack and disintegrate, rendering the grater useless.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke After a few Uses
I bought it because I thought the design was innovative and useful. It grated OK a few times, but the plastic frame holding the metal grate cracked at the corners and eventually broke.

1-0 out of 5 stars OXO is slacking
I am usually a fan of OXO products but I have noticed lately that they are not as good as they used to be with shoddy execution or questionable workmanship. I, like everyone else, was hoping this would be the solution to my storage issues with graters but it proved useless less than a year later and with little use to stress the thing out (almond paste and cheddar cheese were the only things I used it for). It developed cracks in the plastic that are impossible to repair. Also, I do not think this is a good grater for the supposed market of arthritic people - it can be difficult to put together.

So, in short, it stinks for those suffering pain in their hands and for those who cook. Save your money and just buy a KitchenAid grater. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Great for hard and even semihard cheeses, this wire cheese slicer by Oxo cuts cheese thinner than knives can and without the added pressure on your hands. The stainless-steel wire ensures a thin slice, and the solid zinc construction is quite durable. The soft rubber nonslip handle absorbs the pressure slicing puts on your hands. It's perfect for placing next to the cheese board at your next party. Good Grips products are moderately priced and have won the Tylenol/Arthritis Foundation Design Award. --Laurie Notaro ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Kind of flimsy, non-adjustable
The wire on this slicer is not adjustable, and I tend to prefer my slices a bit thinner than it does them, which is part of why I purchased a wire cheese slicer.

The wire was getting pretty slack over the past couple of months, and then when I was slicing cheese today it just broke! The wire itself didn't break, but it pulled out from the handle and is non-repairable. The good news is, I called Oxo to inquire about warranty info., and they said that it's warrantied for life and would send me out a replacement right away. The whole call took about three minutes. Maybe the one that I got was just bad, maybe they're all like this and I'll just keep getting replacements. I wish I'd purchased another kind instead, though.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor quality for price ratio
As several others have noted, the wire goes slack and then breaks easily after a short period of time. Once the wire breaks you have nothing but an expensive handle to throw away. This product should be recalled, it is of fraudulently poor quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thick, slack wire makes slicing harder than it should be
This slicer has a nice handle, like all OXO products. Unfortunately, you're going to need all the grip that handle can give you. The wire in the slicer is thicker than other slicers than I've used and is not mounted as tightly in the frame. This makes the slicer drag through the cheese and require more effort than slicing really should. It's not a bad slicer, but it's not nearly as joy-inducing as other Good Grips utensils I've used. (As for adjusting the thickness of the slices, just tilt the handle a little bit as you pull. It's not hard to get the hang of it.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Wire broke within 2 weeks
I thought this was a good slicer until I tried to slice a block of Extra Sharp Cheddar and the wire snapped about halfway through the 3rd slice. No way to replace the wire so the whole unit is now useless. If OXO stands by their warranty, I might try to get a new one, but until then I am going to use a cheaper adjustable one.

I liked the slicer okay...but the wire just snapped and I haven't had it but a few months. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Thanks to its oversize nonslip knob, this rotary cheese grater is easy to operate--and it's quite productive as well. Its spiral-patterned stainless-steel grating cylinder produces slivers from hard cheeses, nuts, and chocolates. The grater's tray keeps your table crumb-free, then reverses to become a snap-on cover that allows you to grate and then store the extras. The extended arm makes for easy turning, and the grater is dishwasher-safe. --Laurie Notaro ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The easiest grater
This grater has the best design available. You squeeze the body of it while turning the knob on top (sort of like a peppermill with a turning handle). Makes light fluffy grated cheese easy, easy, easy.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Cheese ( And Other Things) Please
Oxo International has a well deserved reputation for durable and easy to use kitchen products. Their Tylenol Arthritic Award stylings are evident in everything they produce and this suberb cheese grater is no exception.

The larger extended arm with a comfortable knob grip makes grating right at the table a breeze for adults and the smaller ones too (no uncased blades or notches to knick fingers). And it's just plain fun! You can see the smiles as guests churn out their own gossamer slivers of parmesan onto steamy heaps of pasta. And I really appreciate that the snap-on cap does reverse, so I can grate in advance and store in little shaker bottles.

I've done chocolate shavings on desserts, mixed nuts for ice cream toppings and my family's favorite is (now don't laugh) to fill it with their hamster's cedar chips--so the lining of his glass home looks better and he can be seen better. *sigh* Laughing....thank goodness the steel blades stay sharp and it all is dishwasher safe!

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke after only a few uses
I had a Zyliss grater that lasted for many years. I usually like OXO products, so I was eager to try this grater as a replacement. It is much clumsier to use. Worse, the plastic piece that holds the cheese close to the grating drum broke off completely during normal use. I would not recommend purchasing this item, as its quality does not warrant carrying the usually-excellent OXO label.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever found!
I'm very surprised by the negative reviews for this item. We've had ours for about 3 years, use it probably 4-5 times a week, and have had no problems at all. When guests use it, they usually want to know where to get one immediately. It has two particularly great features: (1) this not only grates the cheese, you just snap on the bottom and it stores the cheese as well; and (2) every other cheese grater I've used either scraped my knuckles or broke my fingernails--this does neither. People with arthritis in their hands comment that it's particularly easy for them to use, too. I've given several as gifts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Clever design, but fragile
We found this grater to be convenient and easy to use. However, it did finally develop a cracked plastic body which made it unuseable. Ours lasted about a year. It is still preferable to the old style board graters and the rather crude metal rotary graters. If only it was sturdier! I'm on a search for something better ... Read more
