5-0 out of 5 stars Lifetime Guarantee
Taken directly from chicagocutlery.com-- "Chicago Cutlery knives are warranted to be free of defects in material & workmanship under normal household use for the LIFETIME of the product. ANY piece found to be detective will be repaired or replaced at no charge with the same item or an item of equal or greater value. This warranty is not valid for products damaged by misuse, for purposes other than normal household use, or failure to follow the manufacturer’s use & care instructions." As for failure to follow the manufacturer's instructions, one of those little rules happens to be not putting your knives in the dishwasher-- something you should have learned from your parents a long time ago, anyway. They weren't "just" trying to save water!
If you must wash them in the dishwasher, dry them by hand-- it'll save you the hassle of mailing in perfectly good knives later. As for myself, I'm a third generation Chicago Cutlery devotee-- the same Performa wood set has served my mother for the last 30 years and my grandmother for 50. I'm the first to take on the stainless set and with rigorous use and standard care, they have served myself and my family extremely well.

5-0 out of 5 stars good set of modern looking knives
I have recived serveral comments on how good these knifes look. I am in fact very pleased with the way they look, but even more important is how well they perform. They cut wonderfully (for me at least, but I'm used to cheapy knifes). Yes they will in fact rust, although I haven't had this problem with my set (had them for about four months now) because I only handwash them and dry them immediately. One steak knife found it's way into the dishwasher and sure enough it came out with a little rust spot, this was easily removed with a little steel wool. You just have to weight the benefits of the all metal knifes to those that are wood handled or plastic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rusting !
This was my first set of "nice" knives. I am SO disappointed ! Right away they began to rust and are continuing to do so, more and more. Even my cheap knives from Target don't rust. The positive comment I have about them is their sharpness is awesome. I wish I had investigated the quality before I bought these. I just assumed any Chicago Cutlery product would be great since the name is supposed to mean quality. Wish I had saved for something of better quality ....

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
We got these knives as a gift about 6 months ago. They look nice and they are sharp and do cut well. The knives rust very easily though, cheap steel I guess. They are also not well balanced in my hand. The handles are hollow not solid so the blade is heavier than the handle. I don't think these will last very long.

I would not have purchased these on my own, I would have bought better knives that would last me longer. For the price they are fine but you can do much better if you spend more. I would rather have 3-4 really good knives than a bunch of OK knives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great set of knives
We bought these knives with a gift certificate we received for our wedding. They're terrific! The blades stay nice and sharp, and they're easy to keep clean since the blades and handles are one continuous piece of metal. They fit nicely in both my and my husband's hands, and the weight is just right.

I highly recommend these knives for anyone looking for a good set at a medium price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great knives, great price, for home chefs!
For the $100, you could buy a single Wusthof grand prix chefs knife. Ask yourself, how many hours a day will you be using your knives? These knives are well made, sharp, and hold their edge well. They look very similar to those expensive knives that so few of us can afford. The balance is not as good as the pricey competition, but at one third to one half the price this set does admirably. They are a bit heavy, as are most knives in this price range, but they feel solid in the hand. Steak knives are wonderful and go well with my stainless flatwear. I am a casual cook and sometimes gourmet who admits these knives are a lot of bang for the buck. ... Read more

This knife sets combines high performance and durability with desirable safety features. The key to this combination is the blade. Blades are made from high-carbon stainless steel, which resists rust and discoloration. The edges are hand-ground to Chicago Cutlery's exclusive Taper Grind edge, which tapers gradually for a smoother performance than traditional blunt angles. For added safety, the blade extends through the handle and is held firmly in place by three brass rivets. The walnut handles are ergonomically designed so you can face a marathon chopping session. This set includes two 3-inch paring knives, a 5-inch utility knife, a 6-inch utility knife, and 7-1/2-inch fillet knife, an 8-inch carver, an 8-inch chef's knife, and a 10-inch bread knife. To help keep your knives sharp and in top condition the set includes a sharpening steel and storage block. --Laura Cuthbert

5-0 out of 5 stars Premium steel between two wooden handles
I've had my set for maybe 20 years or more. I have an electric knife sharpener and every few months I run them all thru it. I use the steel on them every two or three times I use them and they are always superbly sharp. Being a lazy bachelor I run them thru the diskwasher. I'm not going to baby them, would rather buy a new set every few years, but haven't had to. Wood is white with age and a few cracks here and there but still holding up just fine. People who complain about these knives aren't doing the bare minimum to keep them sharpened. This is superb steel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knives the way they should be made.
These knives are made the way I wish all of my knives had always been made. They require the use of steel and occassional sharpening and oiling. Relatively speaking, they're high maintenance knives ... yet I have tried many knives that are far more expensive and haven't found one that matches the cutting ease nor good balance. The maintenance is the price you pay to have knives that are of such high quality, and I wouldn't take them any other way. While the blade will not hold an edge as long as some others, when well taken care of it will outlast the others and the edge will be sharper than all others out there, a result of their using high carbon non-stainless steel, a metal not used in virtually any other knives, and certainly none of this quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
I give these knives 5 stars not because they are the best knives on the market, but rather that they are probably the best knives in their price range. I have had my set for about 4 years and, while someday I will probably upgrade, they have never let me down. I use a steel every time and wash by hand. As the handles are wood, I oil them occasionally as well.

These knives are not the best that money can buy, if you are looking for that prestige, there are better choices. However, they are solid knives, even for someone like myself who uses them constantly, that will hold up and perform very well for a very reasonable price.

If you are purchasing these knives with this understanding, you will not be disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low end of the quality knife market
I've had my set for almost ten years; they're nice (better than Farberware "never-sharpen" serrated) but not the best. They're working fine for me now, but when it comes time to replace them, I'll go with a Global.
I also prefer the wood to the plastic handles-- the plastic doesn't feel as good.
FWIW, I use the steel every time, and have had them professionally sharpened once, after about 6 years. And of course, they don't go in the dishwasher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Knives
This is a great set of knives. The handles are very high quality wood and have a solid feel. The Stainless Steel blade is made to last for years. Well Balanced and sharpened from the factory.
Great Buy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Starting Set
I recently purchased this set after spending several weeks trying to decide which set was right for me. Not a chef, just a regular guy who likes to cook. I looked at several competators and decided that, for the price, this set was the best one out there. I've had the opportunity to use most of the knives at this point and I find that they keep their edge very well and are extraordinarily easy to clean up. They have a nice heft to them and the handles seem to be just the right size. The only drawback that I see is that I would have preferred an 8" chefs knife instead of the 6" that comes with the set. Overall excellent for the price and an absolutely sufficient set for novice. ... Read more

Moderately priced and sturdily made, the heavy knives in this 10-piece set are forged from high-carbon stainless steel. They have thick bolsters for balance and safety and full tangs for strength and stability. The classic three-rivet handles are formed from durable, nonporous Bakelite so the knives are dishwasher-safe. The set consists of four kitchen knives: an 8-inch serrated bread knife for slicing crusty loaves; a 7-inch chef's knife for chopping and mincing; a 5-inch utility knife for cutting fruits, vegetables, and lunch meats; and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife for trimming and peeling. The rest of the set contains four 4-1/2-inch, straight-edge steak knives that neatly cut steaks, chops, and roasts into bite-size pieces; an 8-inch sharpening steel to keep the knives' edges in order; and a heavy laminated-wood block with 10 slots. All the knives carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the average cook
I consider myself a savvy shopper and usually do my homework before making a purchase. This includes reading any reviews I can find. I read the ones posted here and I must admit I stewed over making this purchase for about a week and finally came to the conclusion that what was considered a "higher quality" or more expensive set of knives such as Henkel or Wustoff wasn't needed in our household. We are the average busy family with no more than 3 or 4 meals a week cooked here. Thus, eliminating the need to spend more money. I have always considered Chicago Cutlery to be quality in my book, and I am very pleased with my purchase. I also want to note that I didn't have the problem with the cracked handles as some reviewers had stated. They were just fine, and I love being able to throw them in the dishwasher!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Knives
I have this set and I like it quite a bit. I prefer the bakelite handle with rivets to any other design (wood changes over time, regular plastic doesnt feel nearly as nice, and I don't care for the look of stainless handles).

I did not have a problem with cracked handles. I assume they will stay that way (I don't see how they could crack through normal use, since the blade is a full hilt design).

All these knives are straight edge (except the bread knife) with forged blades (better than stamped blades).

All in all a good set for people who don't want to spend lots of money on knives (like me).

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Twice Over
I purchased this Insignia set. Three weeks later the handles cracked. I decided it must have been a fluke and tried a second Insignia set. I washed the knives in the dishwasher prior to the initial use. Two of the handles cracked and on 6 of the knives the stamp "Chicago Cutlery" washed off, perhaps they weren't proud of their product. It does say in two places on the box that they are dishwasher safe. I did like how the knives cut and especially how they were weighted. I will not however purchase a third set of these knives, the quality seems to be lacking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why?
I feel that the Chicago Cutlery Insignia 10-Piece Knife Set with Block deserves a 5-Star rating. I feel they are made quiet well they are heavy, balanced and work quiet well for an beginning chef as my self.

4-0 out of 5 stars A WORKING KNIFE SET - NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT!
There are many things in our kitchen upon which we've come to depend, and this Chicago Cutlery knife set is right at the top of that list.

First of all, it comes with a handsome and handy wood block for easy knife storage. We keep it right by our chopping block.

The knives, with Bakelite handles, are well balanced and well made with stainless steel rivets holding the knives to their handles.

Perhaps the most used are the parer and the utility knife. The sizes of both are easily manageable, and they are comfortable to hold for long periods of use.

These are cutting edge items at a reasonable price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good knives, great value
For the price, these are fantastic knives. I've had no problems with them at all - and they're quite sharp. Best not to put in the dishwasher. They will rust if water stands on them, and the handles don't respond well to the dishwasher. The blades are thick and sturdy, unlike many steak knives in this price range. Treat them right and they will last! I'd buy them again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chicago Cuttlery, Insignia 10 Pc Set
I recently purchased a 10 pc set of Chicago Cutlery, Insignia set. Less than a week later the printing on the knives started disappearing. Now, less than a month later the knives are seeping with rust. There are fine pits and cracks that seep rust and I am very upset as I cannot return, exchange or get a refund for them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't abuse them
Good knives should NEVER be put through the dishwasher. Also, good knives should be DRIED immediately. Since good knives are made out of STEEL, they can rust if abused.

1-0 out of 5 stars expected better
These are the worst steak knives I have ever purchased. The tips of the knives have actually broken off 3 of 4 knives, and the blades have rusty spots on them. Even though the price was relatively low compared to "top of the line" knives, I expected more from a name like Chicago Cutlery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Junk
I own a set of the walnut tradition from Chicago Cutlery and have been very happy with them. I wanted something I could put through the dishwasher, so I ordered these, thinking the quality would be on par with my other knives.

Mine didn't even make it to the dishwasher - all 8 that I ordered had cracked handles upon delivery. On top of that they were pretty dull - nothing like my walnut handled chicago cutlery knives.... ... Read more

This seven-inch santoku knife combines the precision of a Western chef’s knife and the power of a Chinese cleaver. It’s an essential in most Japanese homes as well as many professional kitchens. Great for chopping and dicing herbs or vegetables, the broad, straight blade also produces razor-thin and precise slices of sashimi, or any other fish, meat, or poultry. Oval-shaped indentations on each side reduce friction for a cleaner cut and help release food so that it falls away from the blade.

Chicago Cutlery’s Centurion series offer high performance at an excellent value for a heavy-duty, forged-blade knife. Nicely balanced in the hand, they’re made from high-carbon stainless steel for rust and stain resistance as well as long-lasting beauty. Chicago’s exclusive Taper Grind edge is razor-sharp and cuts with precision; these knives will need to be re-sharpened on a regular basis, but they take an edge well and with maintenance can stay out-of-the-box sharp for years to come. The full tang extends from one end of the knife to the other for a balanced feel and added strength, while the heavy-duty forged bolster enhances safety. Ergonomically designed polymer handles are durable and non-porous, so they’re impervious to water and bacteria, and they have a handsome traditional look. Triple-compression stainless steel rivets secure the handle to the blade for increased stability. Chicago Cutlery covers their knives with a lifetime guarantee; they recommend hand-washing and drying for best results. --Mary Park ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love to cook now
These knives are not only beautiful but make cooking so much easier. I like the look of stainless steel handles but didn't realize that it does make them harder to grip securely. Still, I am very happy with them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointed
Although they look great, I was disappointed to find rust spots when I unwrapped them from their packaging. Since then I have had two others rust from the dishwasher. Other than that I would have to agree that they are a good value.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Quality Could be Better Weighted
For all stainless knives these are very good quality. They ship sharp and ready to use. As with most forged steel knives (even high end ones!) they do need to be sharpened occasionally with the included steel. What would be nice is if the hilt had a bit more heft to them to balance the blade. They seem to be "hollow". I wonder why that is. But otherwise they perform flawlessly. A good buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars These are very good knives!
We've had these for a few months now, so we've had a chance to use them. They look great and all but one were very sharp when they arrived. The part that says they never need sharping is wrong and should be corrected. They are very comfortable to hold. The block looks fine. They are very good knives and a good value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sharpening Steel
Actually, a sharpening steel is not for sharpening at all; it is for honing. To hone a blade is to re-straighten the edge of the blade--a blade's edge can get bent over by use. Sharpening, on the other hand, is to create a new blade edge. I assume that the "never needs sharpening" of these knives means that with regular honing via the "sharpening" steel will eliminate the need to sharpen the blades in the proper sense of the word. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great gift for people who have almost everything & cook
Especially for people who cook alot (live to eat, rather than eat to live), these scissors are a fantastic gift.I have given at least a dozen pairs as wedding or house-warming gifts.I have had mine for eight years & they are still razor-sharp.I reach for them a dozen times each day. These would be a welcome gift for a valued staff member or an appreciated teacher, as the holidays approach.I couldn't live without mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utility Scissors
These scissors are easy to clean. We have used them as a screwdriver, a bottle opener, wire cutters, and of course scissors. I highly recommend a pair of utility scissors for any kitchen. These come apart for easy cleaning, this is a great feature because it gives you an opportunity to dry the scissors very well and eliminate any bacteria growth or rusting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Well, Cheap, Easy to Clean
I've had mine for a while and use them frequently in the kitchen.Handles heavy work such as cutting up raw chickens. Is generally comforable to use.Separate pieces and throw them in the dishwasher to clean. The reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that the bottle opener and screwdriver are an unneeded add on, that sometimes get in the way. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good for the price
Considering I was using a $12 set from another retailer before this, where you had to saw through an apple, these knives are a step up. There is an empty space where kitchen scissors go, but they are not included with the set. A good set to start off with.

3-0 out of 5 stars on the subject of cutting edge
This set of knives feels good in the hand. nice weight, good looks, but sadly the blades went dull really fast.

I guess for the price point, they are a good deal. We'll see if some professional sharpening will get them to hold an edge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good inexpensive set
Being a student, I can't afford the knife set I really want, but this one will do until I graduate. The knives aren't very heavy due to their plastic handles, yet they are still fairly well balanced. They did need to be sharpened out of the box, but once that was done they cut everything from a very delicate bread to bagles to tomatoes to meat very well. Other knife sets in this price range tend to be "eversharp" (where they have that microserration so you can't use a steel to sharpen them), and this set is far better. I'm giving this set 5 stars not because I think these are the best knives I could buy, but because they are a very good set for very lilttle money. ... Read more
