Amazon.com Review

With its programmable clock, this versatile coffeemaker not only has hot java waiting in the morning but can brew the coffee directly into either the 10-cup, glass-lined carafe, or one or both of the Thermos-brand travel mugs. Hamilton Beach makes the brewing process easy: a guide inside the water reservoir features mug symbols for the precise amount of water to add, and scalloped ridges on the coffeemaker base indicate exactly where to position the mugs. Care should be taken to ensure the coffeemaker is resting on a level surface, since a slight tilt could result in uneven distribution when both mugs are used simultaneously. A mug is placed under the brew basket with its lid screwed on tightly--a 360-degree ring of holes around the mug lid allows the coffee to enter during brewing. In addition, the holes enable the user to drink from any side, whether the handle is grasped by the left or right hand, a convenience that many car cup holders overlook.

Each mug features a stainless-steel exterior, plastic interior, and handle generous enough for a gloved hand, ideal for cold winter commutes. When preheated with hot water, the carafe keeps coffee piping hot and looks elegant enough for serving at a fancy event. Other features of the Stay Or Go machine include simple-to-use on/off, programming, and hour and minute buttons, a cone-shaped filter basket with handle (requires No. 4 paper filters, not included), and a water filter to remove chlorine taste. For best results, the carafe, mugs, and filter basket should be washed by hand, although the stainless-steel mugs are dishwasher-safe on the top rack. The coffeemaker measures 14-1/2 by 10 by 8-1/2 inches, and is covered by a two-year warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Your money's worth
I was sold on this unit for its price. The thermal carafe and travel mugs alone are worth more than its list price. A friend of mine has this unit, so I felt comfortable purchasing it. First off, to address some concerns, there is indeed trouble with dripping as noted in previous reviews. However, I don't feel that it's an unusual amount, considering this is a drip coffee maker. After my first few pots, I was able to minimize dripping to the point where I don't need to clean up after myself. Secondly, the issue of turning the coffee maker to fill the resevoir. I've found that I have no trouble filling it from the front. I can understand why people are having this trouble. It's a tall unit. It takes a bit of coordination. Finally, previous reviewers complained about the taste. I did a very standard cleaning, have not used the water filter, and have had no troubles with taste.

Con:
1. The unit is big and tall and is awkward on the counter.
2. Its capacity is 8 cups.
3. The cup indicator is on the INSIDE of the water resevoir and is hard to see, especially when filling.
4. It does drip. I can't deny that. But it is manageable.

Pro:
1. The thermal carafe is excellent. Preheat and you will have perfect hot coffee for 2-3 hours.
2. The travel mugs are handy. The 360 deg drinkability is surprisingly useless to me, but to each their own.
3. Clock timer is handy.
4. Easy to clean and easy to use.

Overall, I'd have to say that with its deficiencies, it's still the best value. The thermal carafe and the travel mugs alone make this coffee maker a good purchase. I'd recommend it if you're in the market for a thermal carafe coffee maker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value.
I've been using mine for almost three months. Preheating the carafe with tap water, it coffee stays quite hot for a couple hours, and drinkably hot for three or four hours. Yes, it does drip when one takes the lid off and tries for that last half a mug of coffee, but so what? (By the time it gets down to that point, the coffee is lukewarm anyway.)

It goes without saying that the coffee is not boiling hot, like a French press/plung pot, but that is the price one pays with any drip.

I mostly purchased this unit because of the versatility in brewing options, and they have proved quite useful. When one considers that the Thermos mugs alone cost $20 each, the price point isn't bad at all.

I was surprised to learn the Hamilton Beach and Proctor Silex are essentially the same company; had I know that, I probably wouldn't have bought this pot, but I'm glad I did. The only thing that probably does better in the thermal carafe market is a Capresso, which doesn't have the travel mugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
Not sure what some of the other reviewers are talking about- I have had great luck with this coffee pot. I have had no trouble unscrewing the lid, coffee tastes good, doesn't drip as long as you wait until it shuts off. I turn it on in the morning before I get into the shower, and it is ready when I am out. I do not pre heat the pot, but the coffee stays hot all day.

I really like this pot. I am getting ready to buy one for my mom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleased with the product ... why all the complaints?
I must say, I was surprised to see so many complaints about this coffeemaker! I have a Bunn unit a home, which I love, but I needed something new for the office. After years of dealing with a Brita water filter, coffee grinder, coffee maker and thermal carafe; I was ecstatic to pare this list down to just a coffee maker and a grinder. The biggest obstacle has been the price point of units offering a water filer AND a thermal carafe. This was the first unit I have seen for under $100. The thermal mugs are an added plus! I found the mugs a little awkward to drink from with the inward sloping lid, but it's just a personal option. Since I prefer to grind my coffee just before brewing, I really didn't think I would use the timer function. But, I find that it allows me to arrive at work with a carafe of hot water ... pre-heating my carafe for the upcoming pot of coffee. By doing this, the coffee is still very warm by the end of the day (in case I didn't have a chance to drink that last cup and want to enjoy it on the way home). The coffee it brews tastes fine in my opinion. Maybe the people who are complaining are using a poor quality coffee (I personally like Starbucks). When I reach for a second cup, I toss the used filter and put the basket back sideways until everything has a chance to air dry and prevent any funny tastes. I don't have an issue with filling the water reservoir, but I am filling it from a plastic jug and the unit is not on a counter under cabinets. Personally, I like having the markings in the reservoir so I don't have to pre-measure the water in the carafe. I haven't had an issue with the unit dripping either, but it's usually 10-15 minutes after I push the brew button before I reach for the carafe. Yes, the top isn't "easy" to unscrew with just the ridges along the edge, but I wouldn't say it was a problem. In my opinion, the coffee tastes fine, brews hot and stays hot (and doesn't cook and burn on a hot plate!). For the price, the unit is a great deal for the features it offers and the travel mugs are an added plus. I would recommend it for those looking for a reasonably-priced unit with a water filter AND a thermal carafe. In fact, I have considered replacing my Bunn (with hot plate) at home with another one of these units.

1-0 out of 5 stars A vile brew...
I'm writing to support Bad Taste's review. While there are definitely some design pros & cons to this coffee maker that are up for debate, those issue pale in comparison to the fact that it brews horrid coffee. My husband and I have been using a Braun for years and recently had to say goodbye. Like the previous reviewer, we wanted a thermal carafe without having to spend more than a moderate amount of money. I could really care less about the travel mugs, personally, but they are a nice bonus (that said, the lids are not well-suited for smaller mouths). On the design side, we've chosen to overlook the fact that it's a tall machine and drips a bit (there's no hot plate to drip on, so it's more of an annoyance than real big issue). We love that the carafe keeps coffee hot for hours. My husband brewed a pot at 8:00am that was still hot at 1:00pm.

Problem is...the stuff it brews is undrinkable. My husband likes coffee "regular" as those of us who grew up on the East Coast like to say...that is, full of milk n' sugar. I, however, like my French Roast black and bold, consequently I have nothing to mask the taste of the vile stuff this machine spits out. Nothing helps: we cleaned prior to use, as instructed; we've adjust both the grind and the amount; we've even adjusted the water level. All we've done is waste good coffee.

There are many people who view their morning cup as simply a necessary "pick me up" and really don't bother themselvs with the flavor or need add taste enhancements regardless. If that sounds like you, then you might not notice a problem. But if you truly love "good" coffee in it's full glory, skip this coffee maker. Ours is going back.

For the record, ours didn't come with the bonus filter, so that's not the culprit. We've been using the same old cone filters from Costco successfully for years.

To wrap up, I can't say "you get what you pay for" because there are $20 machines that brew better stuff than this. Personally, we're going for Braun #2...it's $49.99 here on Amazon, no fancy carafe, no travel mugs...but it brews great coffee. What more could you want? ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Hamilton Beach’s FlavorPlus coffeemaker has all the standard features for making a basic cup of coffee, plus a few extras. The most significant deluxe feature on this 10-cup coffeemaker is its FlavorPlus enhanced brewing cycle, which saturates coffee grounds to produce richer, fuller-bodied flavor. Another perk is the digital clock and programmable timer, which you can set to start brewing before you get out of bed in the morning. For ease of use, this coffeemaker has a swing-out removable cone filter basket and a transparent water window for viewing how many cups are in the works. A "pause ‘n’ serve" feature pauses the brewing when you remove the dishwasher-safe carafe to sneak a cup and a nonstick hot plate keeps coffee warm after brewing. For safety, the FlavorSelect has automatic shut-off, which turns off the hot plate two hours after brewing commences. 3-0 out of 5 stars Carafe Drips
This model makes good coffee, however, the carafe drips coffee onto the counter as you pour. The spout is either too small or too narrow. Everyone who has used our coffeemaker has had to pour their coffee v-e-r-y slowly in order to not spill.
This is really annoying. I would not have purchased this model had I know this problem exhists.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Inexpensive Little Coffeemaker that Could
If you're looking for a nice progammable coffeemaker for under $40, this is it. It's attractive, it fits together nicely, it's easy to program, and it makes good coffee. The pre-brew feature really does make great, rich coffee. Best of all for me, the pot doesn't drip unless you get sloppy in your handling. I would definately buy this one again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great VFM
Used to vacation (great) "oil dreg" Turkish, Itailian Ristretto, etc.. as well as using personally"dot.snot" $30k super m/c (better than commercial Starbucks).

For almost no dollars the quality of coffee is outstanding..wait for the lights or som e time for water temp/pressure to get right.

Feels and looks like 300 buck machine. Fantastic bang per buck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works fine for me!
I'm not sure what the below reviewer is complaining about with the machine's heating element.I've had this for two weeks now and have made many great tasting cappucinos with it (I don't like straight espresso).

The espresso shots come out perfectly hot (but not too hot) and the steamer froths and steams milk beautifully. My only gripe with the steamer is that I need to run it once, let it heat up again and then run it through a second time in order to get my desired results. The whole process is no more than a minute or so which is very tolerable considering the price.

I had read reviews on other sites that mentioned that this machine (actually an older model) did not produce decent crema.Well, I had no experience with making espresso in the past (I'm a home roaster for regular coffee) but my first try produced a great cup of espresso with a nice caramel colored froth on top.And this came from store bought, pre-ground espresso coffee!

Cleanup is very easy and the unit is small enough to store away when not in use.It comes with a measuring spoon that stores away in the unit and the machine accepts both ground espresso and pods (never used them). For the amateur and social drinker of espresso and cappucinos, this machine should suffice.I would not be able to justify spending any additional money on an expensive machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars How do I rate it zero stars ??
Should I say more ?? I can see that another reviewer raves about this but I dont have anything kind to say about this espresso machine except that it looks pretty good on a kitchen counter.

The specs say that it is a pump based machine but they dont mention about another crucial element of any espresso machine; a boiler. I dont think this machine has a boiler. This machine manages produce steam by flowing a tiny stream of water over the heating element and then to the pump; Not a pretty way to create steam and good espresso. Ofcourse, you can also forget to make steamed milk for cappuccinos or lattes.

At this price range I would excuse them for cutting corners on some features, but messing up the primary function is not excusable. That said, I am not one of those espresso nazi's who assume spending anything less than a thousand bucks on an espresso machine is the only way to get good espresso. My unit went back promptly and I am still searching for that elusive (and decent) espresso machine for a hundred bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!I love it!
This machine is easy to use, easy to clean, and makes fantastic espresso.I can use it with loose ground espresso or premeasure pods. The steamer makes great foam and steamed milk.

I haven't used my regular coffee maker at all since getting this machine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Old Style...Not so New Functionality
The style and durability of this coffemaker meets the expectations of this retro-coffeemaker.Remember that it is mostly all-metal and you can tell when you lift it out of the same-color-as-the-coffeemaker box.I was not disappointed with its durability, color and style.I enjoy keeping abreast of the different style of makers that come out and this has not disappointed me yet. The metal housing is extremely well made and nice looking.
However, there are things that I will be watching out for and you should also. The plastic top of the carafe may be the type where it discolors from coffee drippings remaining on it after the brew process.I will be rinsing this off each day to slow or prevent this discoloration -- it has not happened yet.I bought the apple color...the bannana color may show this more.
There is a rubber gasket that prevents brew drippings from splashing out and this may wear out over time.
The claim on the no-scorch hot plate.Well, this is where Hamilton Beach may be behind the times as most coffee makers have this now.The hot plate is in fact pretty hot, so don't misinterpret this. But it is as you expect...easy to wipe clean like most coffee makers today. An advertising boasting probably.
Hamilton Beach has "American-ized" the cup markings. Each cup marking is actually two demitasse cups instead of the common Braun and Krups one demitasse quantity. So expect a close to full "cups" of coffee.I actually like this.
In terms of speed, I did not witness any faster brewing as it claims in the advertisement, but it is not slow at all, so you won't be disappointed. The water temperature and taste of the coffee is as you would want and expect.
The carafe top is not removable, so cleaning is only a bit challenging. The seal for the top of the carafe works o.k., but water does collect in the seam a bit.But again, rinsing this daily will prevent any problems of staining.
All in all, if you maintain this unit, by wiping/rinsing it down daily, it looks like it will hold up and keep its excellent look and functionality for a long time and I recommend it if you are interested in this new retro look. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee
We bought this unit to replace another coffee maker because of its styling. Of course, it was bought to make coffee, which it does quite well. The pre-wet cycle adds about 5 minutes to the brewing time. But the great coffee smell in the morning is enough to wake me up. Its also a breeze to clean since the filter basket is easy to remove. This is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb coffee!
This machine makes better coffee than any coffee maker I've owned. (And most makers I've had have been more expensive.)

The Flavor+ feature adds a few minutes to the brewing cycle, but I use it every time. It definitely enhances the taste, particulary when brewing a small quantity.

The only negatives are trivial: The filter basket is a bit awkward to put in. I'd prefer to save a few bucks and not have a timer. (I never use it because I always grind the beans immediately before brewing.) And the plastic top to the carafe seems flimsy, though I've had no trouble through three months of use.

Five stars for great coffee taste. If mine broke, I'd immediately buy the same model.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coffee maker, especially for the price
I bought this coffee maker after getting a refund on a much higher-priced Cuisinart model. First of all, it seems to me that reviewers of coffee makers spend too much time talking about features and not enough time on the most important element: how is the quality of flavor of the coffee as produced by the coffee maker? So, I'm gonna get to that point with this Hamilton Beach: this unit brews excellent, full-flavored coffee just like the "Flavor Plus" feature promises! I've been here and there and spent beaucoups of money on different types of gourmet beans trying to get that restaurant quality of coffee with the Gevalia/Melitta model I have been using. Now, with this Hamilton Beach, the search is over. I even brewed some supermarket, in-the-can ground coffee not even using the FlavorPlus feature and the cup of coffee still tasted great. This one's a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Coffee -- Good Customer Service
The Flavor Plus makes a very good, flavorfull cup of coffee and is very easy to use. Definitely better than many of the more expensive models. I don't find the carafe hard to place, you just have to be sure the spout is not facing directly to the back of the machine. I had one problem. When I first used it, the white electrical cord developed troubling bands of brown discoloration -- the color of toasted marshmallows -- that looked like burn marks. I called customer service and they confirmed there was such a problem with some of the machines, but told me tests confirmed the marks were purely cosmetic. Nontheless, they offered to ship me a new machine if I would cut off the plug from my unit and send it in to them. A fair solution and much more consumer-freindly than having to ship the whole unit to them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ugh
The coffee that this machine makes is fine, but the machine itself was a real disaster. I have only had this coffee maker for about 5 months and 2 pieces have broken -- the lid to the carafe and a trigger piece behind the carafe. Also, the carafe never sits flat on the burner, which drives me nuts.

I really can't wait to buy a new coffee maker, but it's hard to judge by the reviews I read on this site. Everyone else seemed to love this coffee machine! I can't really imagine why though, because the coffee isn't special enough to make up for all the other faults of this machine. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Smaller than you'd think
This coffee grinder works as well as other small coffee grinders I've used, and for about the same price you get multiple settings for different amounts and fineness of grind, and a retractable cord, all of which work very well. So clearly it is a good buy. Yet I have two complaints:
1. Since it has an automatic shutoff, it would be better if you didn't need to keep the start button depressed during grinding.
2. Okay, I like my coffee strong, but if this grinds 15 cups they are 15 very small and weak cups. More like three to five cups. It is very close in capacity to other small grinders. ... Read more

This electric kettle heats up to 1.7 liters of water for coffee, tea, or instant soup without requiring the use of a stove. The round plastic base plugs into any standard outlet and gets water boiling in no time with its 1,500 watts of power. When water has boiled, a safety mechanism turns the unit off and prevents the kettle from boiling dry. For easy lifting and serving, the kettle rotates 360 degrees on the base and travels cord-free from counter to table for pouring. While the kettle's brushed stainless-steel exterior gets very hot during boiling, the plastic handle and knob on the removable lid safeguard against burns by staying cool. A drip-free spout keeps water from splashing and scalding and an anti-scale mesh filter traps lime and calcium particles (found in hard water) before they end up in a teacup. A clear water-level window conveniently shows how much water is left in the kettle. For long-term performance, the kettle's heating element is concealed, which keeps mineral deposits to a minimum and makes cleaning easier. Hamilton Beach warrants this product for two years from the date of purchase. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

On your kitchen counter, office desk, or dining table, this powerful 1500-watt, 10-cup electric kettle brings water to a boil in minutes. Tea, instant coffee, bouillon, hot chocolate, and other hot beverages are just moments away. The kettle's every feature is designed for convenience. Windows on each side reveal the water level at a glance. The kettle sits on its power base at any angle and lifts off for cord-free pouring, while the cord wraps inside the base for clutter-free use or storage. The on/off switch is on the thick, comfortable, stay-cool handle, where all it takes is a push of the thumb to start or stop. (When the water boils, the kettle shuts off automatically.) Inside, there's a stainless steel heating element that comes clean with a wipe of a sponge or a cloth, and that's all the hard plastic exterior needs, too. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The hottest kettle on the market
Just boil and go! Being cordless, this kettle has been a great addition to my home (and even office on occasion). I just heat it up on its power base, then lift it off and take it with me wherever I go. Whether I'm in my study or even outside on the deck, I always have a hot and steaming cup of water ready to pour. And with its two-sided water window, I always know well ahead of time when it needs a refill. But best of all, inside, the heating element is under a flat stainless steel bottom, so when you do want to clean for some reason (although it almost never gets dirty), it's a breeze!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I purchased this to replace a west bend electric kettle. I have used this product every morning since I received it without complaint. It works great. The cordless feature is a great feature, take it where you need it once the water is hot. It brings 1.75 liters, about 10 cups of water, to a boil in about 6 minutes. Fill it with water, set it and go do something else, when you come back hot water. If you forget to come back, no problem, the unit turns itself off so there is no danger of boiling dry. It has clear, easy to see water level indicators on both sides of the unit. The lid thing others mentioned isn't that big of a deal. The lid stays on and when you want to remove it pull from the handle side up and it comes off. Overall, a great product. If you are looking for something that works like it is supposed to, then you won't go wroung with this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent "value" teakettle
Very good low-priced teakettle, boils water fast, has automatic shut-off, cool and comfortable side handle, so far works perfectly well without a single problem for more than a year since the original date of purchase...Only problem is its lid which is kind of hard to remove but hey, first of all, it doesn't affect any other function and you can still fill it with water even without removing the lid and second, it's kind of expected for such [a] price. Aside from that insignificant (for me) problem with the lid, I am perfectly satisfied with this kettle and would recommend buying it to anyone who is looking for affordable, reliable electrical teakettle.

5-0 out of 5 stars still working 2 years later
I purchases this over 2 years ago, and it still works like the day I bought it. I use this everyday, without a single problem.
It does what it is supposed too without fail.
Good Product.

4-0 out of 5 stars awful lid but it boils great
I have owned this for a year now and it does boil water very fast and i love having hot water on hand all the time because I make a lot of bread. I however hate the lid. You have to pull it off to fill the pot and it pours way to slow so you have to pull it off to pour hot water. The lid does not come off easy and when you finally get it to yank off you splatter boiling water on yourself and the counter. I bought the Philips HD4651 for my mother and I wish I had gotten the same one. I highly reccommend the Philips over this one because it has all the same great features plus it has an easy open hinge up lid and a bell goes off when it boils plus it has a filter. She used mine and agreed the Philips is a much better design at the same price! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Quality
I purchased this coffee maker a week ago, used it for three days, and then put it firmly away. I will not go to the closet I put it in; it is an Ugly Place. This coffee maker is horribly made. The lid has to be pried off of the carafe, and its hinges appear to be so weak and apt to break that you find yourself preforming an oxymoron and prying gingerly. The filter takes an act of God to remove and put back onto the machine; you have to lift and turn and adjust and pray that *that* hinge will not break in the process. (because it, too, is a thin little piece of plastic) Worst of all, the carafe doesn't fit onto the hot plate. It sits askew and no amount of adjusting will make it flush with the plate. The coffee was good, although not very hot (see askew carafe), but all in all, this was just a poorly made piece of jumk.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Coffeemaker
My new Hamilton Beach Flavor-Plus 10-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker is the best I've ever had. Pouring the water into the reservoir is a cinch and if done slowly and with care not a drop is spilled. The same holds true when pouring the coffee from the carafe. I opted to buy a permanent coffee filter and am pleased with my choice. The unit is very stylish, not cumbersome, and looks attractive on my countertop. I love it!

2-0 out of 5 stars what a mess
impossible to pour coffee without spilling

2-0 out of 5 stars The spilling carafe
What good is a good cup of coffee if you are constantly wiping up spills from the carafe, either when you are pouring water into well, or when you are pouring coffee into your cup. We have never been able to avoid spills from the carafe. Frustrating enough to bring old machine up from basement and start to use again.

This is a shame becuase the coffee was excellent. We are considering retrurning the unit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works as expected: no more, no less
I wanted this coffee maker for its auto start feature. I woke up this morning to a pot of fresh coffee. I used the flavor + option and I honestly cannot tell a difference. I no longer have to wait in the morning for my coffee to brew, so I am happy. Pouring water from the pot to the unit can be tricky, but by the time the initial cleaning was over, I had mastered the art of not spilling water all over the counter. So, in all honesty, not a terrific unit, but, I wanted to upgrade to a timed brewing unit and that feature functions well, so I consider it a good unit. It does what I expected it to do, no more, no less. ... Read more
