This professional mandoline slicer for slicing and shredding potatoes and other vegetables comes with everything you need: a 4-quart stainless-steel bowl, a plastic storage lid, four interchangeable cutting blade cartridges, and a cutting slide with a safety guard. Just slide in the cartridge you need--thin slice, thick slice, julienne (1/8-inch), or french-fry cutter (1/4-inch)--press the safety guard with sharp prongs onto the end of the vegetable, and slice away. The safety guard rests on side rails over the blade so your hand can't slip, and the entire cutting slide apparatus snaps onto the top of the bowl. The stainless-steel bowl has four rubber grippers underneath so it won't slide while you're slicing. Pop the plastic storage lid on top and put leftovers in the fridge. Every part of the mandoline slicer, including the cutting blades, is dishwasher-safe. Lifetime limited warranty. --Doree Armstrong ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
I bought this thinking I wouldn't have to julienne veggies by hand any more. Ha! The julienne blade shreds so fine I may as well use my grater(which would be a lot safer).

Also, the tips of the julienne blade and the french fry blade are raised above the stationary blade when slotted into place(very dangerous). This then cuts through the top of the veggie not yet sliced, leaving an uneven mess in the bowl when I continue.

All of the inserts stick when inserted and are hard to remove; I ended up covering it with a towel and pulling it up and down really hard(that's an accident waiting to happen).

The slicing inserts work okay if you absolutely must have uniform slices(with firm fresh veg only), but I'll probably go back to using my knife.

The prongs on the handle don't secure all veggies very well and I found myself slicing some vegetables without it(not a good habit to get into).

I like that the bowl comes with a lid, this I'll probably use more than the mandoline, unless I find a recipe that calls for shaved zucchini slices!

3-0 out of 5 stars Too "Gadgety" for me.....
I bought this because a friend said she "loved her mandoline slicer." Well, I've used this 3 times in the last year. It's very large to store in a small kitchen. The large bowl has a fitted lid for convenient storage (cut veggies in the morning, cook in the evening). I also don't really bother with the blade storage unit--I just put everything into the bowl and cover it with the lid, although the black handled cutting blade and the lid do not fit over each other. I ether have to put the cutting blade on top of the lid or leave the lid off.

Like another reviewer, I also had trouble removing the blade from the unit, and worried that I'd slice off my finger. I finally figured it out, though. I julienned zucchini, but got a large tangled mass of green. Carrots were hard to put in the holder (I suppose large carrots would work?). It's not designed to cut veggies lengthwise--I always have trouble with the grip sliding or shredding my veggies before it gets to the cutting blade. Sometimes perfectly matched circles just aren't what I'm looking for in my food.

I like my santoku knife much better. I have less clutter on my prep counter and less stuff to wash. The mandoline might be faster if I got used to it, but I don't mind spending the extra minute to cut veggies by hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars learning to Pay the mandolin was qick and easy
Most of the Mandolins that I have seen were rectanguar and do not have their own stainless steel bowl as this one does.It very easy you simply take one of the cutters from the compact holder where they are kept and simply put it the slot where it goes sliding it forward untill it stops and then make sure the little button on top of it snaps in place it stops the blade sliding back with the veggie you are trying to make perfect lttle slots or slices of for your guests.

We like to take a sweet potatou and make very thin pieces with the steel cutter and quickly stir fry them in a litte olive oil
Like with all "Gadgets'You have to use a litte common sense and if you have an ugly veggie that you are trying to make pretty dish wih then you will have take a medium but very sharp knife but, please handle it safely ,and maybe do a little strightening so the unit will pass through the Mandolin. You can prepair a large or small amount of food very quickly. But Allwys remember when you start getting down to small amounts you must slip on the pusher handle or you will be giving youself a very quick manicure or worse. Everyone who has seen mine in action or eaten the results goes crazy for one-and you cant beat the price!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not sure
Cleans easily and does make uniform cuts after a bit of practice. I found holding the bowl on a table (rather than up on a counter) and pushing down a bit harder on the plunger helps. One thing I would like is the ability to get additional blades for thinner slices, etc. I have not been able to find any for this unit. You are stuck with what came with the unit, but for thinner slices I end up using a knife.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
I got this slicer some time ago, used it once, and had the same negative reaction of a lot of the posters here. The blades are viciously sharp and fitting them into place can be tricky. The pronged holder is awkward to use, but don't use it and you risk injury. I shoved it into a cabinet and forgot about it.

Then a few days ago I decided to make scalloped potatoes following instructions in one of Laurie Colwin's books and I didn't want to get out the food processor. This mandoline worked great and now I love it.

Here's my version of the recipe: Peel as many medium-sized russet potatoes as there are people eating this, plus one. Fill the bowl of the mandoline with water, and slice the potatoes using the thick slicer; drain. In a *nonstick* pot, boil the potato slices in a mixture of water and milk to cover (all milk, or milk and cream, makes this richer). Add garlic if you like - I use the pre-minced stuff in the jar. Boil until tender - 10-15 minutes. If you taste them, they should be mostly cooked. Salt to taste. Ladle potatoes with some of the cooking liquid into a casserole and bake in a hot oven (temp doesn't really matter - if you're cooking something else at the same time at anywhere from 350-425 degrees, stick in the potatoes) for 20 minutes (time is not exact either). Then add a topping: I used breadcrumbs (panko actually) sauteed in butter, cooled a bit and mixed with shredded cheese. I topped the potatoes and put it under the broiler for a couple of minutes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Professional look, easy to use
This peeler has a lovely matte steel finish-look, is not so lightweight as to be dangerous (it has good heft), possesses a thick handle to prevent you from losing your grip, and peels carrots and cucumbers (and other veggies/fruits) in record time. This is a great buy, and just think - you won't have to pull out that embarrassing rusty old peeler next time you have friends or family in the kitchen watching you work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to peel!
This new aged vegetable peeler is what every cooker needs. It peels the vegetable in no time at all allowing you to get on with the rest of the cooking you need to do. It doesn't eat the whole vegetable nor do you have to wash it by hand. When your done cooking your gormet dinner and it's time for the pile of dishes to be done, just toss in the peeler along with the rest of the dishes and relax. It is a wonderful product that most people should have in their kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Peeler to Beat All Peelers!
For years I've been looking for a peeler with a comfortable grip. This peeler has that. It also has a very sharp blade and great control while you're peeling. The blade just glides down the vegetable with ease. I'd recommend this peeler especially for people that have arthritis because it's so easy to use.

Part of Hoffritz's Platinum Series, this sturdy scraper/chopper proves itself handy during a meal's preparation, as well as its cleanup. The tool's uses are myriad: scraping and gathering foods, transferring chopped vegetables from the cutting board to the pan, slicing pasta into squares (or other shapes), and cleaning up after pie crusts. The scraper/chopper's fat handle and sleek, minimalistic design make it both a pleasure to use and a snap to clean. It's forged out of a single piece of steel, so the tool's rolled handle transitions seamlessly to the rigid, tapered blade. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Kitchen Tool
I enjoy using herbs and vegetables in my own cooking, but transferring them into my pot or pan with even a big chef's knife takes several trips from the chopping block to the stove. I had seen television chefs use chopper/scrapers on their shows many times, so taking a clue from them I ordered this beautiful Hoffritz Stainless Steel Scraper/Chopper and have been delighted that I did. Man, do I love cooking! This tool has made it easier for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cook's little helper
I decided to purchase this gadget after seeing a professional chef who appears nightly on FoodTV. He recommended it for baking purposes. Since then I have found many other uses for it and am thrilled with the purchase. It has a lot of surface area for scraping or gathering chopped foods. The handle is nice and fat without being cumbersome. This is not an overly sharp tool so don't expect it to cut like a good knife. It cuts pastry dough and soft, thin foods nicely and is great for scraping your dough board. I keep coming up with new uses for it so I'll probably end up buying another one soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars That picture is deceptive...
...This item larger and heftier than it appears. Not at all like those el-cheapo metal hand choppers or the lightweight plastic scrapers for bread dough. The tubular handle is "fat" and gives a safe, easy grip. The flat scoops up a surprisingly large amount of choppings or scrapes any cutting board clean with ease and efficiency. Breaks up ground meats as they cook; serves scrambled eggs nicely; etc etc (be creative!).

In Italian, "mezzaluna" means "half moon," and the curved shape of this incredible chopper echoes the moon's shape in the midpoint of its cycle. Its extremely sharp blades make quick work of vegetables, meats, and hard cheeses, and are ideal for dicing leafy herbs. Hold the mezzaluna firmly by the black knobs and, with a rolling motion, seesaw the blades over a thick slice of onion or a pile of fresh cilantro. 4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, ergonomic, non-electric chopping
My grandmother swore by one of these rocker-shaped knives for doing nuts and other fine chopping. I have one, and I use it a lot for mushrooms, nuts and herbs. Having said how great it is, I have to add some caveats:

1. It's sharp, yeah, I know, duh! gets caught between the two blades and it's tempting to run a finger in there to push it out. Well, don't. Keep a spatula or chopstick handy to push out anything caught there.

2. You really should use a concave sort of chopping board if you can find one. While a flat plastic chopping board works just fine, a curved board makes chopping easier.

3. Some things just aren't good for this knife: dryish but not TOO hard things (nuts, celery, etc) work best. The wetter the food, the more it sticks. Even so, I do use this for chopped chicken livers. But for nuts, it's about my favorite knife to use.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, it's decent, but there's more versatile designs.
It's good for mincing, and the form is a nice take on the half-moon design. However, an ulu would be better. It's single blade, but is good for slicing and shearing as well as mincing. This can only do mincing, due to it's handle design and blades.
Personally, I prefer a tool with more function, like an ulu. Can't beat a design that's been used for thousands of years (for a good reason...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Slice 'em Dice 'em With Ease
I love anything Italian and have been known to attempt soul-searching arias (my apologies Senors Pavorati et Bocelli) as I cook in the kitchen. And if I have this half-moon delight in my hands, rocking back and forth rhythmically over large sweet onions--I blame the orbs, not my vocal chords, for the tears.

On the serious side, the dual stainless steel blades on this particular mezzaluna by Hoffritz make it extremely quick for all chopping and dicing needs. Caution is definitely needed regarding how sharp those hard working blades are. I strongly do not recommend allowing young ones near it. Note: due to blades, make sure to choose a durable cutting surface.

Mezzaluna is a beautiful Italian word and as a tool, makes a great addition to your kitchen. I was very surprised at how easily it handles even large wedges of veggies, thanks to the well-designed knob handles. It's perfect for creating spicy salsas, stir-fry samplings, and even sausage crumblings for pizza toppings.

A perfect gift at a good price for anyone who truly enjoys cooking.

Squeeze the baster's black rubber bulb to suck up pan juices or other basting liquids, squeeze the bulb again and out spurt the juices or liquids to keep a turkey or tenderloin moist while it's roasting. To get flavoring liquids deep into a roast, the injector needle works wonders. Tip: run hot water through the baster to warm it before basting or injecting so liquids will not cool down. 1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing - definitely not worth the money
We have had this baster for less than a year and the bulb has already cracked and split, rendering the thing virtually useless. My old cheap plastic baster -- which I got at the dollar store -- lasted longer than this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stainless Steel Baster
After putting up with plastic and glass basters that crack and break, I finally decided to move up to stainless steel. To my pleasant surprise, this one carries the Hoffritz name and quality, can be used as an injector and even has its own cleaning brush. The Rolls Royce of basters!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bulb is Weak Link
Bought this item last Christmas for my wife. Worked fine until this Thanksgiving when rubber bulb split apart when basting turkey. She had complained when I bought this fancy one to replace her old ugly plastic one last year but I insisted this was better. Boy am I in trouble now. Old plastic one had lasted for 10 years and cost 1/10 as much. Did not look like much but it did the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baster + Rotisserie = Yummy dinner!
My husband and I were looking for an injector to replace the cheap plastic one that came with our rotisserie. When we saw this, we decided to give it a try.

This thing performs wonderfully as a flavor injector, and we have used everything from barbecue sauce to tequila into the poultry and fish we cook in our rotisserie. The two work together making the healthiest, juiciest meats you can find.

If you have a rotisserie, definitely get this item.

Also, having cooked many a bird in a conventional oven, I recommend this as a simple baster as well. Don't buy a plastic baster that will melt when you put it too close to the heat source. Metal is better!

5-0 out of 5 stars You will love this for more than Turkey basting....
I love this baster when roasting chicken as well. Nothing gets the chicken skin quite as crispy. While you could just use a spoon to scoop up the pan juices, that is just too much work, since then you have to tilt the pan. With this baster, you can just suck up all those tasty juices and baste away.

Now, I did notice that sometimes when you suck up too much of the juice, it can pop and sputter...I assume that is the steam building up in the tube, so be a bit careful until you get used to using this product. You don't want to get burnt! Otherwise, it is a great product.

I use it every single time I make a turkey breast or a chicken. I also use it to baste beef roasts and anything else I am roasting. When you roast potatoes and vegetables with the roast, you will also find this baster useful. So, don't limit its use to just once a year.

After all, roasting is one of the easiest things to do. Just put the meat in the oven, baste a few times and dinner is served. You really don't have to work too hard. ... Read more

I think we all can agree that peeling apples or potatoes is not a coveted kitchen job. Usually this is due to small, rickety peelers that have a tendency to skip across the surface (and maybe your thumb). You spend too much time repeeling and trying to find the Band-Aids. To be honest, I ordered this by mistake, but I LOVE it. The peeler section is longer than other brands' -- perhaps the added length gives one more control. Also, the handle is very comfortable. It does a great job on potatoes, carrots and cucumbers. No problems putting it in the dishwasher. And it looks cool.

4-0 out of 5 stars a great little gadget
This tool is great. You MUST use plastic wrap to avoid a mess! This gadget got pork loin cutlets so thin and beautiful that rolling them around a stuffing was a pleasure not a chore! And if anyone know a hunter, it makes venison steaks fantastic! It is small so it stores nicely and fits well into the dishwasher. It is well weighted so it feels good in your hand when using it. It is easy to control, unlike the big, bulky mallet types. Give it a try, for the price, you can't beat it!

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice piece of tool.
Well I followed advise from the other reviewers and covered the meat with plastic wraps so that there's no mess at all and result is great. I'd like it better if they rotate the handle by 90 degrees so that the flat side rest in my hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a mess!
Absolutely, positively do not use this tenderizer without something covering the meat. It works fabulously but I tried it without covering (I hadn't read the other reviews) and I, my counters, refrigerator, etc, we're splattered tremendously!! Just an FYI.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tenderizer...
This tenderizer, with a rubberized mallet that feels comfortably heavy, works well and feels good in your hands. To prevent splattering, I suggest that you put the meat between two pieces of plastic wrap or in a plastic Ziploc bag. That also keeps the tenderizer relatively clean.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea for a starter
This is a great gadget, but a bit messy! I wouldn't want to be without it and would surely love to see it improved. 1-0 out of 5 stars dont waste your money
I have had this for 2years now and what a waste of money it has been. I have used this a few of times before I decided to toss them. This set was a disaster. The parer is dull period and the peeler peels off much more than just the skin, you lose almost 20%(no exaggeration) of the fruit or the vegetable.

5-0 out of 5 stars FREE
I got this free with something else, and like it better than what I paid for!

4-0 out of 5 stars arrived dull.
The peeler in this set is good for larger vegetables like potatos. My husband uses it, since the handles are large and fit his hands better. The parer arrived without the blade having been sharpened. The blade does require repeated sharpening. The parer was larger and more difficult to use than I had expected. Again, it seems to work best for someone with larger hands.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the price
OK so I got this set for free, but I would have paid something for it. The little peeler works fine but the parer isn't the sharpest knife in my knife block. I've attempted to sharpen it but it doesn't hold an edge well.
