This compact 1,200-watt machine automatically produces espresso with the push of a button. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. An electronic control lets you select the amount of espresso brewed each time, from 2 to 8 ounces. Other noteworthy features include a removable 30-serving water tank with an intake water filter and water-level display, an antidrip system, a patented filter for thick crema, a die-cast filter holder for minimum heat loss, and a frothing attachment on the steam nozzle for cappuccino foam and lattes. A coffee tamper and measuring spoon accompany the 11-3/4-by-8-3/4-by-8-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Quality Espresso/Cappuccino at Home
I'm been using the Chamonix by BRIEL and absolutely love the machine. We had the machine up and running in 5 minutes (that included: rinsing the reservoir and attachments, plugging in the electrial cord, pouring the water into the reservoir and turning it on). Every part of the espresso maker is working wonderfully. The reasons for purchasing this machine was so I could have a reservoir of water and also to use the espresso pods in order to make numerous individual cups of espresso for our dinner parties. It is very easy to clean afterwards, and in just a minute or two after turning it on, just put the espresso pod in the pod holder, insert and turn, press the button, and in 20-30 seconds you have a cup of espresso. I am very satisfied with the product and would encourage others to purchase it as well.

We especially liked the auto espresso flow feature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Know what you're getting, and you'll be thrilled
I've had my Chamonix for two and a half years, and I love it. I use it for at least three shots a day, and I've only had to take the screen off for cleaning once or twice.

This is a great machine for personal use. Based on other reviews I've read here, I see that some people are disappointed about some aspects of the machine, which I'll try to clarify:

-The frother nozzle is hard to clean. In fact, I don't clean it, and it hasn't been a problem. If you think about it, you have scalding hot steam coming out every time you froth some milk, so I'm not worried about germs.

-You shouldn't leave the machine on for longer than you need to. This is not an always-on model like my rich friend has.

-You cannot brew directly into most mugs; I use a small enamel cup. Shot glasses also work, but tend to cool the espresso too much because glass has such a high heat capacity. This is not unusual for espresso machines; most commercial espresso places brew into shot glasses.

-The steam nozzle drips like crazy while you're brewing. I keep a spoonrest underneath to catch the drips.

-You have to hit the brew button after foaming to let out the super-hot steam enough that the coffee doesn't get scalded (if you foam before pulling the shots, which I do).

-The basket needs to be filled to the proper level. You should loosely scoop it about 7/8 full, then tamp it with the built-in tamper. You should get a firm but not hard surface on the grounds. If you can't press the top of the basket against the machine, it's too full. If the tamper doesn't make a complete disc on the top of the grounds, it's not full enough. This machine is not meant to be given a hard-packed pellet of espresso grounds, nor is it meant to be used with less than a full basket.

-This machine does not produce a hard grounds puck like most machines. I believe this is because of the kind of filter/gasket combination is has to give a good crema. Therefore, when emptying it between shots, I recommend rinsing it in the sink rather than banging it over a puck can. I never take the basket out of the handle, and I haven't had any problems with it. If you grind your coffee right, it won't clog your kitchen drain. If you're getting a clogged drain from doing this, you're probably also getting bad coffee from too coarse a grind.

-Don't let it run out of water or it makes a horrible sound. I've done this at least five times, but it's never caused damage.

-The shot size is not consistent. I always watch the pull and stop it when it's reached the amount I want.

So, as you can see, this is not a pro machine, and I'd probably be annoyed by the above characteristics if I'd dropped eight hundred bucks on this thing. But this is an inexpensive $150 machine, and you can't beat that with a stick for a pump machine.

If you see other reviewers that said this machine doesn't make great espresso, they're doing it wrong, and it's really not hard. You just have to not pack the ground so tightly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in performance
I found the Chamonix to work quickly, but the quality of the coffee it produced was not satisfactory. I currently use a cheap Melitta that makes a much better latte. I used the exact same grind and fresh coffee beans, so this is not a problem.

The filter holds water and leaks when you remove it, and no cup I own will fit under it without taking the shelf off completely. The filter leaked the first time, so I started over with less coffee. No leaking but watery coffee. Further attemps with increasing, decreasing coffee and tamp pressure also unsuccessful. I ended up using my old machine and adding expresso to my mug to make it drinkable.

The frother is at a poor angle, I can't get any of my tall mugs under it without picking the machine up and raising the entire level of the container. I tried angling my cup with the machine at the sink edge, and it was still not possible without spilling some of the frothed milk.

I have shipped this machine back and thank Amazon for making it so easy to do so. I really wanted this machine to be the best I ever owned.

3-0 out of 5 stars great coffee - mediocre build quality
The coffee tasted wonderful, but after a year and a half of daily use the components (which were admitedly cheap-ish from the start) began to give way. Some of the dial labels rubbed off almost immediatly after purchase. We replaced gasket after gasket on the frother (which can pop off, spraying hot steam). Cleaning the frother tip well is inconvenient. An indentation in the filter cup designed to keep it from rotating tended to cause it to get stuck.

This would be an OK machine for light use (others in its price range don't look any better) but for serious coffee drinking spend an extra hundred or two on something more robust.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME - Right out of the box.
After much searching and pricing on Ebay, I found this little gem. I received this today and already made 2 perfect cups of Cappuccino. The directions were pretty straightforward. I ran through a few plain water runs to clean out and was ready to go. I was surprised how quickly it gets ready to brew, and how easy it is to operate. The clearing is small, and you can only fit a smaller cup under the brew handle. I knew that going into the purchase. 1-2 cups is all you can make at a time, but if you need to make more, it is ready in about a minute. My first cup was delicious. Great Crema, nice froth... PERFECT! I can't wait for tomorrow morning :-) As it gets older I will update if there are any changes. If it's in your price range, pick one up. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Not for the novice espresso drinker or for the Starbucks-style café latte fan, this professional espresso machine is the workhorse type found in small cafes throughout Europe. Think single-shots of thick espresso and small cups of cappuccino, as anything else is beyond the realm of this machine.

Briel is Europe's largest manufacturer of pump-driven espresso machines, and its Multi-Pro series is designed to be used with fresh ground coffee or ESE coffee pods, which are small portions of ground coffee pressed between two pieces of food-compatible paper. Coffee pods are packed with the right weight, roast, and grind, so even the inexperienced barista can consistently make great espresso.

This machine features Auto Espresso Flow, an adjustable electric timing control that lets you select serving size in advance. One of two filter holders brews two cups of espresso at a time. Other bright spots include the Turbo Jet frother, equipped with a steam control knob and removable cappuccino nozzle; a self-priming pump fed by filtered suction and water return tubes; a cup warmer; a removable drip tray and grid; and a coffee tamper. The removable 2.5-liter water tank also has a water level indicator viewable from the front of the machine. One downside is that the brew head fits so tightly into the filter holder that it strictly limits the amount of coffee that can be loaded into it, which complicates the brewing process when using fresh ground coffee. --Matthew Evans

5-0 out of 5 stars Restaurant Quality Espresso for Home/Office Use
This machine is absolutely incredible! We've been shopping and thought that this BRIEL machine could be the solution to our espresso/cappuccino entertaining needs.

Not only did I like the resulting rich espresso that the unit extracted, but I also liked the "sub zero" stainless steel look of the machine.

It's commercial in quality and performance, easy to use and produces an espresso or cappuccino as good as you can get at the local coffee bar or restuarant, without having to leave your home.

I tried using the coffee pods for the first time and the result was even better than use with ground coffee (which was alreay good!). Besides the coffee result, there was no messing cleanup, no grinding of coffee and the mess involved with the process, no worries about the correct amount of coffee to place in the filter basket and no concern about tamping the coffee either too much or not enough. The pod works beautifully with this machine.

After all of the above, I decided to shop around. I called BRIEL directly in Atlanta and they suggested that we check out the BRIEL STORE at amazon.com. Clicking onto this site gave us all of the information that we needed to know concerning BRIEL and we made our selection with ease and without complications.

I'mextremely happy with this machine and can recommend it to someone whois serious not only about having a great espresso or cappuccino (Ihave also used hot water from turbo frother arm for making hot tea),but also for a great looking, hi-tech appliance for the counter, thattakes up very little space.

Simply put, it's as GOOD AS YOU CAN GET!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Espresso/Cappuccino Machine I've owned
The BRIEL Multi-Pro one group pump espresso machine is the absolute best machine that I've ever owned! I make espresso several times each day. This machine is easy to use, the espresso always have a rich crema, the coffee comes out hot and the machine is extremely reliable. I love the fact that you can use traditional ground coffee or the coffee pods (I've tried the CAFFECEL coffee pods available from AMAZON.COM and the coffee is absolutely wonderful). The machine is also perfect for making lattes or cappuccinos. The pump is powerful and has plenty of energy to produce a rich, thick froth for milk-based espresso beverages. It seems that there is virtually no "down time" from brewing espresso to frothing milk, which is not the case with other machines I have tried!

The results and reliability of this machine is unbelievable for the price...the machine could easily sell for two times the price I paid.

I've seen this machine in Europe and it's very popular there.

I noticed one comment where someone complained about the service given by the BRIEL office here. I've contact them and found them to be courteous, professional and very attentive to my needs. In the past I've tried to get through to other companies who produce espresso machines and got little to no response. Not the case with BRIEL. I would recommend BRIEL and the ES200 MULTI PRO machine to everyone who wants a serious and consistently perfect espresso. Thanks to AMAZON.COM for carrying such a great machine at a super price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice try...
If you know anything about the art of pulling a shot of espresso -- forget this machine. The ESE adapter is junk. If you like quick poor shots this machine will produce.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a good espresso maker
I have to agree with all the positive reviewers. I did a lot of research. I already had a Capresso maker and after a year it hardly produced the coffee. My new Briel is producing great coffee and the froth is terrific. I called briel with a few questions and they answered on the first ring. I found preheating the cup helps. I am very pleased. ... Amazon.com Review

Briel's Sintra espresso machine with drip coffeemaker is backed by the company's 30-plus years in the coffee business, and it shows--this model's designed to present café-quality drip coffee, espresso, and cappuccino to the home user. To get this high quality, the Sintra has a number of extraordinary features. To start with, it gives you the ability to match most coffee preferences in one machine, due to its dual nature: drip coffeemaker and espresso maker. On the drip side, it has a 10-cup-capacity glass carafe and a nice "stop-and-serve" feature that allows you to remove the carafe during the middle of the brewing cycle.

The Sintra also has some nice functionality on the espresso/cappuccino side, starting with its Auto Espresso Flow system. This system lets you set the coffee strength according to taste, from a stronger, Italian-style short cup to a larger, less robust brew. The espresso is brewed at the required 190 degrees F, and the machine has 15 bars of pump pressure. And it's speedy, brewing two cups in about 35 seconds. It also makes good cappuccino, because of its steam nozzle, which lets you froth the milk. Some other nice features include its patented Cremaker filter, which provides a richer crema on each espresso, an exterior water-level indicator, and a cup warmer. In shining stainless steel and sturdy black plastic, this machine won't shame any counter. It has 2,010 watts of power, measures 14 by 11-1/2 by 10 inches (length by height by depth), and comes with a 10-year pump warranty. --A.J. Rathbun

5-0 out of 5 stars RATED BEST BEST-THEY WERE RIGHT!!!
Consumer Guide rates this as a Best Buy-They were absolutely correct!

We just received our BRIEL SINTRA machine last week. It's fabulous. Recently, we just redesigned our kitchen with stainless steel appliances and wanted a powerful, yet attractive machine that would fit in. I don't drink espresso everyday, but wanted a combination machine that made a quality cup of drip coffee along with a pump espresso machine. So we purchased the SINTRA from BRIEL. This machine offers a sleek Stainless Steel look exterior with added features such as Auto Espresso Flow and a warming plate for pre-heating cups. The espresso part of the machine is impressive and makes it easy for anyone to create authentic espresso, cappuccino or latte every time! This full size machine is adaptable for use with ground coffee or coffee servings (pods)! I get my pods from AMAZON.COM. The 10-cup drip coffeemaker portion of the machine is sensational. It brews drip coffee quickly, at the proper hot temperature and has a nice feature of brew interuption, where you can sneak a cup, before it's completed! Some of the features that my wife and I like most about the machine:

1. Large, removable water reservoir that fills from the top. 2. Water level visible from the front. 3. GREAT ESPRESSO EXTRACTION due to Constant 15 Bar pump pressure producing a savory espresso with perfect crema every time 4. POWERFUL STEAM with a snap-on Turbo Jet Frother produces plentiful dry steam for a thick milk froth for a cappuccino or latte 5.SMALL FOOTPRINT ON COUNTER Before we had an espresso machine and a drip coffeemaker on our counter. It took up a lot of space. This unit is streamlined and by having both the drip coffeemaker and pump espresso machine combined, it is perfect for our needs in creating a European coffee bar in our newly redesigned kitchen.

We can wholeheartedly suggest this machine to others, as we intend to purchase a couple of these machines as gifts. We've had experience with BRIEL in the past and found their products great and their support people bery informative and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful mid-level machine
This is the fourth espresso machine I've owned and I couldn't be happier. The crema produced is SUPERB. The machine appears to be well-made (for its price range) and performs wonderfully. My previous machines were clunkers by comparison. I'm thrilled with the quality of espresso and the rapid steam. The Briel Sintra performs as if it were a far more expensive machine. The chrome front and chrome drip grate are impressive looking and add to the over-all appearance of my kitchen. It is a real space-saver in that both regular coffee and espresso, etc. are in one unit. I love this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
I've been using this machine everyday for the last two years and although it's decent I wouldn't recommend it without any reservations. Overall I'm satisfied with the machine, taking into account how much money I've saved by not going to Starbucks, but I'm ready for an upgrade.

I agree with most reviewers that the espresso it produces is pretty good. Drip coffee is another story. There are some fundametal flaws with the design of the drip coffee compartment. Filling it up is an adventure. Half the water usually ends on the counter. There's no water level indicators inside the water tank, so you have to use the glass carafe to fill it with water. This usually results in a mess. In addition, you end up with less coffee than what you thought because some steam escapes from the top.

As far as the espresso compartment is concerned there are some problems too. First of all, the cup size selector is NOT consistent. The dial is pretty inaccurate, so you'll have to experiment until you get it right. Depending on the grind size you may have to change the setting a lot. So keep an eye on it!

Second of all, the heating element doesn't function very well. The green light (water temperature indicator) is erratic. It will be on, letting me know that the water is ready to make coffee, but it will then go off half way into making a serving. This usually happens if I want to make 2 servings, one after the other. To overcome this, I usually have to wait for the light to go off and come on again, which can add several minutes between espressos. Lately, this happens even if I'm only making one serving. Making coffee with tepid water? NOT NICE.

In conclusion, if you're tight on budget this is a decent choice. If you can spend a little bit more, skip it.

Whoever this guy is from Short Hills, NJ has posted like 20 five-star reviews. I've also seen him do the same on other espresso machines. He either works for these companies or is a distributor or something.

If you are researching espresso machines I would suggest keeping an eye out for this guy because he's trying to throw the averages. My suggestion would be to NOT purchase any of the machines he recommends.

Amazon, your ratings system obviously needs some more checks and balances. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Espresso/Drip Coffeemaker for Office or Home Use
We just purchased the Briel Multi-Pro ED271APG combination pump espresso machine with built in drip coffeemaker for use in our office.

The espresso machine portion is sensational and produces a rich thick crema each time we brew espresso, whether it be from pods of ground coffee. The auto espresso flow feature makes it easy to start and the machine stops automatically based on the amount of coffee you requested. The machine is a real powerhouse in terms of steam pressure for frothing milk. We use this several times a week.

We love the feature of the machine is the drip coffeemaker portion. We enjoy espresso, but don't drink it everyday. However, drip coffee, that's another story! It brews 10 cups of hot coffee in a short amount of time. The pause and serve feature is great. This combination machine is perfect for our counter as it's a multi-purpose machine that is used everyday. You can even brew drip coffee at the same time as making an espresso.

We purchased the ESPRESSIONE pods from AMAZON and really love the 100% Arabica blend...just like being in southern Europe!

We would highly recommend this machine based on both quality, looks and most important performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy so far
I've had my Briel for about 3 months and have so far been delighted with the machine's performance--great espresso, whether you use the pods or ground coffee, great drip coffee, great cappuccino steam frother. Only complaint is that the pressure buildup seals the ground coffee filter so tightly to the brew head that I have to wait quite a while (5+ minutes) before removing the filter as otherwise it sticks in place.

Sounds like some reviewers have had problems that only cropped up after 6+ months of use--we'll see if that happens to me but so far this machine has been A+.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Love it!!!!!
I've had this machine for 3 years now and just love it!!!!!!!!!!!! My family loves it to, infact my sister is going to buy one for herself. I was born in Brazil so I've been drinking coffee all my life. I know a good cup of coffee and this machine makes great coffee. Alot better then Starbucks!!

Briel's Cadiz espresso machine is backed by the company's 30-plus years in the coffee business, and it shows--this model's designed to present café-quality espresso and cappuccino to the home user. To get this high quality, the Cadiz has a number of extraordinary features, starting with its Auto Espresso Flow system. It also makes good cappuccino, because of its included frothing wand. Some other nice features include a patented Cremaker filter, which provides a richer crema on each espresso, and a removable water tank. In shining stainless steel and sturdy black plastic, this machine won't shame any counter. It has 1,260 watts of power, measures 9-3/4 by 11-1/4 by 9-3/4 inches (length by height by depth), and comes with a 10-year pump warranty. --A.J. Rathbun

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe Negative Reviews-It's Great!
I own a BRIEL CADIZ Automatic machine. It's absolutely fantastic. The espresso coffee is brewed at the perfect temperature, the crema is rich and creamy, you can use this machine with your favorite coffee powder or the pods featured at amazon.com (they are great).
Consumer Guide rated this a BEST BUY along with two other BRIEL products...so I'm inclined to go with CONSUMER GUIDE over a consumer who may not know what they are talking about!
Buy this machine...it's a super performer and looks great on the counter or bar.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BUY IN CONSUMER GUIDE
Consumer guide is right...This machine is awesome.

After searching long and hard (and reading countless reviews) I decided upon this machine because of 1)price and 2)looks. This machine replaced an old Krups steam driven machine. I've now had it about a month. Here are my thoughts: 1)There is a learning curve - I had to adjust my burr grinder to get the correct setting, or adjust how hard I tamped, or else I found the liquid coming out around the edge of the filter holder. So,I suggest first buying good quality preground espresso, and get used to tamping it properly (ie. very lightly!). Then, after mastering the tamp, adjust your grinder so you get a grind that approaches what you bought (I used Illy). I found a 5.5 on my Braun grinder works best. Since then I've had no problem and perfect espressos. (the machine seems to work better with time). 2) It drips - no matter what they say it drips. If it didn't drip they wouldn't have a drip pan. It takes a rinse and its clean - no big deal. I have a sponge I use just for the machine to wipe up drips, etc. (also use a toothbrush periodically to clean the brew head). I don't want to turn anyone off; making espresso is messy and will always be unless you pop for the $1000 machines that do everything. 3)I don't have much use for the automatic serving system (the middle dial). Supposedly you can use it to control the amount of water, but I find it varies considerably between shots. I set it to the highest setting and then just turn the brew button on until my shot glass is full and then hit it again to turn it off. Takes around 25 seconds. In all, those are the problems I found - and they aren't biggies. For the price, I'm willing to deal with them as I don't think any of the other machines at a similar price would offer much difference. I'd definitely buy it again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Briel should be reported to the FTC
As long as this machine works, it's fine. But when it breaks down, as it will, get ready for, as someone else already called it - 'the royal run-around'. This machine broke down after about a year. We sent it in, forked over another 100 bucks, and soon were back to sipping cappuccinos. Sure enough, the machine broke down again ten months later. When we explained the problem over the phone -in detail!-, the repair person assured us that this was the same problem and, since it was within a year of the last repair, we wouldn't have to pay for it. So we sent it in again.
The real fun started when we received a call that our machine was ready, with the request for another $80 (in addition to the $20 for shipping we already paid). Suddenly, Mr. Steve Karow informed us, the previously repaired part only had a 90 day warrantee. When I told Mr. Karow of the earlier conversation, and that we only sent in the machine again because of the warrantee, he told us that, and I quote: "We would be happy to throw your machine out if you don't want to pay for it..."

Moral: If it can break down, don't buy from Briel! Their service department will leave a bad taste in your mouth that their best espresso can't wash away. Seeing here that other people have had similar experiences, I believe the FTC should take a closer look at Briel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best crema I've ever seen in a home espresso machine!
As of this month, I've been using my Briel Cadiz for two years. I make 3 cappucino's every day, so I guess you could say that the machine has gotten a very thorough test by now! Over 1000 cups!

It still performs very well. The espresso is second to none -- perfect temperature, very aromatic, and with a beautiful thick head of crema. The steam wand has lost a little power over the years (maybe 20%), but still performs well enough to give me a nice foamy cappucino.

One trick I learned about maintenance: after the first 6 months, I noticed a big degradation in the quality of the espresso and the crema. I tried a few things -- won't detail them all here -- but the solution turned out to be unscrewing the screw that secures the brew head screen, then pulling the screen and out and cleaning it. The screen holes are TINY -- the best way I found to clean them was by using a sewing needle and painstakingly pushing the residue out of each hole. It takes 15-20 minutes to do this. But VOILA! When I reassembled it, the espresso was back to its rich, foamy perfection!

I find that I have to perform this little maintenance task 2-3 times a year, even though I use filtered water. Oh well, not such a big deal I guess -- especially for such delicious espresso!

I'm very happy with this machine

4-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL machine for the money!
I bought the Briel Cadiz after much research over which of the affordably priced espresso machines was right for me. Being an artist, style is very important to me, and I needed to have a nice looking machine. But I also needed one that worked well, and was affordably priced. The Briel Cadiz was the only model that fit my needs. So I bought one.

The first few shots of espresso that I made sucked. I'll be honest. IF YOU ARE NOT PATIENT, DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!! You need to experiment and find the right combination of grind and tamp. The machine, like any other machine priced under 8 billion dollars, IS NOT GOD! This being said, after I bought a nice Solis Maestro burr grinder to get a nice grind, and learned how to properly tamp, this machine delivers VERY consistent and delicious espresso.

Once I learned the ins and outs, I was in love! There is a neat little door that flips up on the top of the machine that houses a filter basket and a nice scoop, and also acts as the door to the opening where water can be poured to fill the tank.

The frother works pretty well too. Not fantastically, but with a little patience, it can make great froth for lattes, cappuccinos, and other hot and frozen espresso delights.

If you have patience and love espresso, this machine is a perfect match! ... Read more

To get this high quality, the EG281 has a number of extraordinary features, starting with the attached grinder. The grinder's many settings, from very fine to coarse, account for the many types of beans available. When using different beans, it should be adjusted to find the ideal grind; the adjustment is also necessary to find the right grind in differing temperatures and humidity levels. After the proper grind is found, it places exactly 7 grams, the required amount for one cup of espresso, into the holder.

This Briel also gives a lot of control over the final product, due in part to its Auto Espresso Flow system. This system lets the coffee strength be set according to taste--from a strong, Italian-style short cup to a larger, less-robust brew. The espresso is brewed at the required 190 degrees F, and the machine has 15 bars of pump pressure. And it's speedy, making two cups in about 35 seconds. It also makes good cappuccino, thanks to its included frothing wand, which has its own temperature control. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Espresso Machine PLUS Built In Grinder
This is the first Espresso machine I have ever owned so I don't have another one to compare it to but I can say that it makes Lattes as good as any I have had at Starbucks. I especially like the "Auto Espresso Flow" feature that allows you to set the strength of the espresso based on how much water is pumped through the machine. I have got it set where I like and now all I have to do is push the button. Friends have told me that they have to monitor the time on their espesso machines which seems far less convenient. I put off buying an espresso machine for a long time because they looked like to much trouble to make but I have to say that with the pods, espresso is easier than coffee from my drip coffee maker and lattes are only a little bit more time consuming. Do get the pods because once you use them you will never go back. I didn't get them when I first bought the machine and probably only used the machine once a week. I went back on line and bought the pods from Amazon (which are excellent) and I now make a latte almost every day because it is so easy. I figured out that once I go through my BOX of 150 the Machine will have almost paid for itself since a comparable latte at Starbucks is about (dollar amount) and the pods are very inexpensive.

However, it's also great to have the built in coffee grinder. This is a quality burr grinder, as I learned from the Briel people. You can grind fresh whole bean coffee, dose the ground coffee directly into the filter holder and instantly brew a perfect fresh espresso, from bean to cup!

This machine is a home run and I would recommend it not only for home use but also for the office. Everyone likes a "fresh" coffee on command.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Espresso Lover
A friend of mine had the BRIEL EG281 multi-pro with built in coffee grinder. They absolutely love having fresh coffee beans ground on the spot, then placed in a filter holder for an "instant" espresso. I was surprised at the rich crema and texture that the espresso coffee was extracted from the machine, which proves to me this machine is a winner. It takes a strong pump to give a proper espresso.

Then it blew my mind when I learned you can also use the coffee pod or serving. I've had illycaffe in the past and actually like the pods my friend had better. The extraction was even richer with the pod and there was absolutely no messy cleanup.

I've had an entry level pump espresso machine from Krups and found it to be marginal at best. I'm sold on BRIEL and this MULTI-PRO machine is great. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the one with the built in grinder or the one with the built in 10-cup drip coffeemaker. Maybe I'll have to get both!

4-0 out of 5 stars Where to obtain parts!
Hey folks,

Same gasket problem as most folks had, but SOLVED! Coffee and coffee grain used to piss all over the place out from on top of the filter holder due to a badly deteriorated gasket.

The technical support team for Briel here in Canada are very informative and very comprehensive. The numbers for support are:

U.S.A. = 1-800-763-6699
Canada = 1-905-660-9958

You can obtain parts ordering information for the nearest distributor near you. The gasket is easily user-serviced and no take-apart is necessary. Simply flip the machine over, grab the smallest flat-head screwdriver you can buy, get a flashlight, locate the silicone gasket and gently pry it out with the screwdriver. Order a replacement gasket from one of the distributors, pop it back in place and start enjoying amazing espresso pulls again!

The distributor they recommended to me was:

Café Express Distributon
Sainte-Foie, Quebec (near Montreal)
1-418-654-1419

They have replacement parts for all Briel models available.

Enjoy folks!

1-0 out of 5 stars Briel: DO NOT BUY
I was in love with my Briel - for exactly two weeks.

That is how long it took for this unit to fail.

DO NOT BUY this machine, it is not a quality product and will fail. Within two weeks the seal on the tank ruptured and machine was dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like the commercial machines!
I am having a great time making straight espresso and cafe con leche ( I am from Miami) with this machine. After you find the right balance that works for you between the amount of coffee and the amount of water, ( it takes a little trial and error), you are good to go. The crema is really rich in every cup. The grinder measures out just the amount you like. I have the pods on order; they are good for the one shot when your in a hurry. I highly recommend this system. If there was one thing that could use improvement, it is the manual. I had better luck with the BRIEL website, that has a virtual manual. www.briel.pt/index.html But otherwise, enjoy a solid, smooth running system. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This compact machine automatically grinds coffee beans and then produces espresso with push-button ease. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. An electronic control lets you select the amount of espresso brewed each time, from 2 to 8 ounces. The self-cleaning grinder, adjustable from fine to coarse, holds 3-1/2 ounces of coffee beans (enough for about 12 cups of espresso) and automatically grinds coffee into the filter inside the filter holder for one cup or two, depending on choice. The grinder can also fill the machine's removable coffee container with enough coffee for 10 espresso servings, or it can be used to grind coffee for a household's drip coffee machine.

Other noteworthy features include a 30-serving water tank with intake water filter, an antidrip system, a patented filter for thick crema, a die-cast filter holder for minimum heat loss, a frothing attachment on the steam nozzle for cappuccino foam and lattes, and two drawers in the base for storing filters, sweeteners, and other supplies. A measuring spoon and instruction video accompany the 12-1/2-by-12-by-8-1/2-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use - Lots of Options!
This is a great machine for someone who like to have control over the how strong their espresso is and likes the option of steaming milk or using the quick froth attachment. I also really like having the grinder, which is adjustable, right on the machine. It's a great addition to any kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I love this machine- it was given to me as gift- I lost some of the attachments- so I can not make some of the stuff-
However, I use it mostly to make expresso- and Its easy to clean- fast and makes GREAT expresso~! I like to use Bustelo- and that makes a big difference in the taste... unless I grind some fancy beans-

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice for a while, but......
For a while, at least, it was been a nice machine; a good introduction to making espresso at home. After about 3 years, I have to join those who are disappointed with this machine. In the last several months it's progressively deteriated. Sometimes it manages to successfully pump water through the grounds, sometimes not; the portofilter sometimes will not hold pressure; and lately whenever it's heated for steaming, large amounts of steam stream out of the brew area. Time to shop for another machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Messy, leaky, inconsistent brews
My Briel Portofino began leaking like a sieve after about 4 months of use. Virtually every seam on the plastic chassis
oozes water now, and the frothing nozzle spits out a steady
stream of water every time the brew button is pushed. Every pull requires a combination of paper towels and sponges. I will replace soon---not with another Briel.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a gamble.
I have owned one of these machines for five years. When it works, it can produce a good pull. However, you need to know what you are after and experiment until you can reproduce what you want. Service provided for the machine is poor. I have had mine serviced twice and both times it was returned poorly repaired. Briel's customer service is non-existent as far as I could discover. I had to have it serviced locally, but they can't get parts so they made do. Still, I did get five years of daily use from it (over 2000 pulls) and so I ordered a new one. This one was received factory packed incomplete and the casing was damaged (before leaving factory). It's a gamble. I will cannibalize my old one to make this one function. ... Read more
