Six months later, and guess which has spent more time out of the closet? The Ergo. It's so very light and simple and surprisingly effective, and, unlike the blender/processor, you can store what you've chopped in the fridge right in the container! The plastic foot/lid is pure genius. I love the unit's compactness and clean, solid design. Cleanup is a breeze. Even though the top isn't submersible, I've had no problem wiping it thoroughly enough with a soapy wet cloth if I take care of it directly after chopping. The other parts are all billed as dishwasher-safe, but it takes our family of two about three or four days to fill the dishwasher, and I use the chopper more often than that. My cute little Ergo has become a true kitchen essential. I'd be one very unhappy cook if someone were cruel enough to take it away!

The Black & Decker FP1500 has a much more substantial look and feel than the rest of the B&D line. Although the specifications don't mention whether it uses belt-drive (bad), gear drive (better) or direct drive (best), the shape and the weight distribution of the base unit suggest it's one of the latter pair. The clincher for me, aside from its power and capacity, were those 5 magical words: "Removable parts are dishwasher safe." The FP1500 isn't the quietest food processor on the counter, compared to those whispering workhorses from the likes of KitchenAid, Robot-Coup and, to a lesser extent, the latter-day Cuisinart line. But it also doesn't drain your checking account or credit card limit of 3 to 5 C-Notes. As a quick chopper, slicer and mincer, it's ideal and looks like it'll last a long time. Though it's not really up to, say, weekly batches of bread dough, a dough mixing blade is included. For about a quarter the price of a set of fancy knives, it'll get you through food preparation tasks quickly and, unlike those knives, it cleans up in the dishwasher.

It's no Cuisinart or Kitchen Aid, but overall, it's not bad! The controls have a solid feel to them, and the machine itself doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart at any given second - it's very solid. Everything is dishwasher-safe, which is a huge plus. I expect any processor to be quite noisy, and this one is, but not so much so that I wouldn't use it. The bowl is a good size, so I don't have to empty it out until I'm done with whatever food currently needs to be chopped/shredded. I have noticed that the bowl locking mechanism is a little bit sticky, but with firm (not "brutal" or "harsh") pressure, it slides in just fine. Overall, it's met my expectations for a machine of its price.

I'm very disappointed in this design -- I had another B&D small food processor with a grater/shredder WITHOUT the chute which lasted for nearly 14 years. When that finally gave up the ghost about 2 months ago I bought this one, and I'm sorry I did. I guess it's back to hand-grating cheese again and scraping my knuckles . . .
