5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!
A pleasure to use: great heat distribution, nice looks and it cleans easily. It's actually inspiring better food! A piece of advice, though. Handle it almost with the care you would use on non-stick surfaces, and it will reward you with easy-cleaning interior for years (mine is 2-years old, and heavily used). Scratch the coating on top of the enamel and food will start to stick to it, even though the scratches won't be visible. If food seems stuck to the surface (after a good roast in the oven), let it soak a bit and stuff comes out. Just don't try scrubbing it too hard. Another tidbit: the upper lip is not coated (the cast iron is exposed), and it may show rust if left wet for too long. Season that edge with a bit of oil, as with any other cast iron pan, and this won;t be a problem anymore. Or simply make it a habit of drying it quickly after use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utilitarian AND Gorgeous! What more could you want?
I love this pot! Like all Le Creuset products, this comes in gorgeous porcelain enamel colors (my favorite is their classic "volcanic flame"). It is also quite heavy, being a 6 1/2 Quart cast iron pot. This is actually an advantage when cooking--using only a low flame, it maintains perfect cooking temperatures, and the heavy lid ensures that you will not lose precious moisture during long simmering. It is very difficult to burn anything in this cookware when you follow the simple direction to avoid anything over a medium heat setting. If, however, you happen to burn something in the pan, cleanup is a breeze: simply fill the pan with hot, soapy water and soak for a little while. Everything then comes quickly off with minimal fuss, thanks to the very hard and smooth enamel finish.

This oval "French Oven" is the perfect size and shape for a nice beef roast, pork tenderloin, or a delectable Boeuf Bourguignon. Be sure to check out the Le Creuset website at lecreuset.com (US, UK, and France) for a large selection of delicious recipes for your cookware. The price may seem a little steep, but bear in mind the company's unparalleled 101 year warranty--this is cookware you will never have to replace!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the $$! Even heat distribution and fabulous results.
I've made everything from braised short ribs to homemade Mole in this and I can truly say it is fabulous. Goes from stovetop to oven perfectly and retains heat better than any cookware I've used. Cannot reccomend it highly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Value
I recently purchased this incredible piece of Le Creuset cookware and, I have to say, I am very pleased and rather impressed by it. Just removing it from its package, with its heavy weight and gorgeous colour, told me that this was a quality made product. But the proof has been in the cooking..
Thus far I have made a delicious chicken and vegetable dish and cooked preserves for canning. Everything has turned out perfectly. Cleanup was easy after some soaking with warm soapy water. This is my first, but not last, piece or Le Creuset for certain!

5-0 out of 5 stars least expensive cookware - in the long run...
if you think about the life-cycle cost of this product, it is a far better value than any other cookware on the market. You can saute, deep-fat fry, roast, boil, braise, etc., etc. in this thing.should you happen to "overcook" (burn) an item - it is incredibly easy to clean without scubbing by soaking overnight in hot, soapy water.should you have to return the item under warranty (unlikely, but I have had to return one), the service is excellent and timely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Le Creuset Winner!
Ah, the big red pot!Every serious cook "must have" at least one, and this one is the perfect size.Heavy, but GREAT cooking, easy cleanup...and it looks fabulous to boot.Your friends will be green with envy.Get one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
This is my 3rd piece of le creuset. After using the 4 1/2 quart soup pan as an all purpose pan, I decided to buy this for some of the larger dishes we make.

It turned out a good purchase, especially with some of the dishes that need some sauteeing and baking. Thelid is quite heavy and fits well, which cuts down the cooking time with some pressure cooking effect if you dont open the lid too often. The flavor and taste offood... according to my wife, is the same as the stainless steel cookware I used before, but my kids say is better.

I paid $115 for this and got a bonus Le Creuset 10-Inch Skillet free. Even with this bonus offer, I think it is fairly pricey, but offers good value for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
This has got to be one of the best kitchen "utensils" that we have.Soups, stews, braised dishes; this guy does it all.We have the 7 quart size and it is perfect.Only once did anything burn on, and Barkeepers Helper cleaned it right up.
We use it mostly on the stove top, but it does great in the oven also.
Right up there with the stainless steel 12 in. All-Clad pan and the All-Clad 12in. non stick pan.
Pricy, but amortize the cost over 101 years (the warranty) and it is well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cook like a pro all day!
I had seen these pots in action on all of the cooking shows, so I figured they were serious cookware. After careful consideration I finally purchased the seven quart dutch oven, in the cherry red color. This size is perfect to make enough stew for my whole family, and the cooking qualities of this pot are just as they are billed. It browned the stew meat, deglazed beautifully, heated evenly, and went right in the oven for the final cooking phase. After dinner I was thrilled to see that Le Creuset'scast-iron cookware cleans just as easily as their stoneware line.Although this pot is VERY heavy, the benefits of cast iron far outweigh this "downside".I should have bought one of these pots years ago and I recommend one to anyone who loves to cook as I do. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic pot
I received this for Christmas and use it almost every day.So far nothing has stuck, not even when I burned the pudding (it came out with a rubber scrapper). It is a breeze to clean and a joy to use.I will definitly buy more.

4-0 out of 5 stars evaluation
excelent product. more people should get into low heat cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Versatile and worth every penny!
I've owned this dutch oven for 3 years now and I must say, I use it at least 3-4 times a week. It is so versatile that you can make anything from soup to chili to even stir-frying when necessary. Although after using it for about a year the bottom looked really yucky, I bought some of the Le Creuset enamel cleaner and it was as good as new again. I love this pot and recommend it to anyone who wants a piece that they can use for almost anything. My only complaint about Le Creuset items is that it is extremely heavy due to it being made of cast iron. However... that's what makes it so durable and will last you a life time!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifetime of Great Cooking
It seems as though there are few things left in the world that are truly great values. However, these Le Creuset classics undoubtedly qualify. While a little more expensive than the competition, they offer uncompromising quality and exceptional performance.

When you pick up one of these pieces the weight sends a message: this is substantial, no-nonsense cookware that will last. Plus, they are a joy to cook with. The French/Dutch ovens are perfect for braising, simmering and roasting. They are the equal of any of the anodized aluminum cookware at low heat and much better at higher temperatures. I routinely sear meats on a high gas flame in them before adding vegetables and stock for braising.

If you're someone who cares about food and cooking, you'll want a couple of these Le Creuset pieces in different sizes. But pick your colors carefully . . . you're going to have to live with them a very long time!-- Scott Loban

5-0 out of 5 stars Creuset Casseroles are the Best
The single best pots for doing rich chicken dishes and the like. Conducts heat perfectly, well-balanced and very easly to clean. So many great meals have emerged from these pots that I tend to cook more frequently, especially the more slow-cooking or complex dishes.

I inheirited one ofthese pots and then bought another. Since then I have excused all similarimitations from the kitchen.

If I had to equipt my kitchen with 3cooking pots/pans, this would come right after the skillet and sauce pan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My kitchen workhorse
I got my first Le Creuset cookware in 1978. It was my college graduation week, & I was relaxing on the lawn reading the Sunday Boston Globe. I saw an ad for a Le Creuet starter set (French oven + 2 covered saucepans + skillet) for $..., so I decided to go for it since I was about to be out of the dorm living on my own. That purchase turned out to be one of my best investments ever, as I still use all the pieces today. I now have 3 French ovens, 5 covered saucepans, 3 skillets, 1 oval au gratin, 1 multi 2-in-1 pan with nonstick omelette cover, & 1 cheese fondue set, all in flame. These cast iron utensils are virtually indestructible, except for a few minor dings in the outer enamel. They cook very evenly, given the cast iron, making me a possibly better than average cook (they're one of my unfair advantages). My only problem with the cookware is the heavy weight, but that comes with the territory with cast iron utensils. I guess I'll have to get someone else to lift the pots when I'm old & decrepit. I know they'll outlive me!

The 4-1/2 qt French oven is the workhorse of my kitchen, so much so that I have two. I boil pasta in it & make big soups, gumbos, stews, casseroles, & you name it in it. I use it on top of the stove & in the oven. And then it goes to the table for serving, given its attractiveness.

Don't be put off by the high price of Le Creuset pots & pans. In the long run, they're a bargain because of their long life. I intend to pass mine down to my sons. Bon appetit!

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this one every day! It's awesome...
I admit it: I get a little carried away sometimes, but I truly love this pot! The 4 1/2 quart size is amazingly versatile. I use this size every day, so I actually own two of them. It's great for browning meat, making chili, stews, roasts, you name it. It's not quite big enough for a whole chicken, but then Le Creuset makes the large oval "French Ovens" for that. I always christen each new Le Creuset purchase with an authentic French recipe (hey, I told you I get carried away!)--this size is great for Boeuf Bourguignon. These pots cook foods perfectly every time, and are very energy-efficient in the process. Add in the 101-year Le Creuset warranty, and the seemingly high prices are fully justified. Clean-up is a snap as well, thanks to the super-hard and smooth porcelain enamel coating. It cleans almost as easily as Teflon, but is extremely durable (which Teflon isn't). And, on top of all that, the colors are breathtaking! I store all my Le Creuset on open shelves in the kitchen--they are too beautiful to be hidden in a cupboard.

If you only buy one Le Creuset piece, start with this one. Use it a few times, and I'm sure you'll want more! Happy cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Le Crueset 4 1/2 quart Round French Oven
I've read the other reviews and agree that this is a most useful tool to have in my kitchen. It washes up beautifully and the cream colored inside is easier to check for spots than the dark non stick ovens. I like the fact that the oven holds its heat for a good long time after the food is cooked enabling me to use the attractive utensil to serve from at the table and to leave for guests to take seconds from without reheating. I've had no trouble with cracking or chipping, but then I take care not to abuse it. My son is getting one for Christmas from me, what else can I say?

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly amazing
A month or so ago I was crusing the housewares department here at Amazon.com, looking for a Dutch oven. I'd nearly settled on Calphalon, but I read a review (gotta love these things!) which said that though Calphalon was generally the cookware of choice, for Dutch - in this case French - ovens, Le Creuset was the brand to buy. I took this advice to heart, in part because I loved the cherry red finish, and bought this 4.5 quart oven.

I want to thank that reviewer; it was one of the best pieces of advice I've had in ages. Le Creuset has produced one of the best, most versatile pieces of cookware I've ever owned. This pan heats evenly and holds the heat, but you really have to work at getting food to burn in it. It goes from stove to oven to table with real panache. Nothing sticks. Ever. Really, I'm not kidding here because I did manage to burn something by walking away and forgetting about it for an hour. But after another hour's soak and a scrub with a nylon pad, the residue was completely removed, leaving no discoloration of the lovely cream-colored enamel of the interior. I use it nearly every day now; I don't know how I got on for so long without it.

I would also like to point out that the cherry red color is very jolly. It might even provoke you to speak French (or at least with an outrageous Monty Pythonesque French accent) while you're cooking. "Allo, now we add zee ahnyon. Zut alors!" That sort of thing. Of course if you find the idea silly, perhaps you should buy the piece in a more sedate color.

Bottom line, this is a great piece of cookware. C'est vrai!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Le Creuset cookware.
In my opinion, Le Creuset is the best cookware on the market. Not only is it attractive, but it cooks food beautifully, holds the temperature of the food after you remove it from the oven and looks great when you bring it to the table. The bright colors really liven up your kitchen and they are so easy to clean. The enamel surface is very durable and I have never had it chip or break off. This cookware heats evenly both in the oven and on the stove. While it is expensive, I believe it is worth the price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Like a Sumo Wrestler, Except That It's French
Le Creuset's enameled cast iron products are generally of excellent quality and this "French" oven is no exception.I prefer cast iron for braising and slow-cooking and this is the best pot that I have found of this size.It does exactly what it should do and it's durable enough to last several lifetimes.

Pros:
Enamel finish is attractive and easy to clean with a non-abrasive cleanser--I use powdered dishwasher detergent and let it soak.
It's BIG and OVAL:holds a large chicken, a duck, a small goose, a fresh ham, or a beef roast.Inside dimensions are approximately 10 1/2 inches wide x 13 inches long x 5 inches deep--plus the lid is slightly domed.
Works on the stove and in the oven so it's good for braising, roasting, and simmering.(Yes, you can brown in it--I make braised lamb shanks in it several times a year.)
It holds heat very well.
Lifetime guarantee.

Cons:
The knob is heat-proof but it's made of plastic so it LOOKS cheap compared to the heavy cast iron and nice enamel finish.
The edges of the pot and lid are NOT enameled and must be seasoned with oil or they will rust.
It's expensive.I got mine on sale on Amazon, but it was still pricey.

Neutral:
It is very HEAVY.(It's supposed to be:it's cast iron. However, if you drop it on your foot, your foot will break and if you drop it on the floor, the enamel might crack. In addition, if you have a tile or stone floor, the flooring might crack.)
It takes up a lot of space.
Does not heat evenly on the stove because it's too big for one burner and too small for two burners.A round "French" oven would be better on top of the stove.
Because it is large, heavy, and hot, you have to be careful not to burn yourself when taking it out of the oven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicest pan I own
This is the nicest pan I own (and I own a lot of pans). It is a perfect size for salmon, corn beef, roasts, ducks, chickens ...

If you splurge on one pan in your kitchen, this is it. Here's why:

There's nothing you can do in a round pan you can't do in an oval. It's easier to lift and maneuver than a round pan. Lots of food is longer than it's wide (fish, lobsters, ribs ...), so you will appreciate the length. And if you want to make a beef stew or curry or ciopino or something that doesn't care if it's in an oval, you will still be happier (and safer) lifting this one than a round one.

If you are thinking of getting a smaller one, well get this first. You may be thinking, "It's too big. I can get a brisket in a smaller pan." In this one, you can get the brisket in AND a bunch of vegetables and get more stock as a result and a more well balanced meal. The same goes for chicken. You don't want your chicken to be all alone. Add some vegetables and make a chicken soup your grandmother would be proud of!

I cook with plain cast iron pots as well. After you cook in them you have to empty the leftovers into something else. With this pan you can keep your food in the pan and stick it in the fridge for the next day. Don't even think of getting a round one in your refrigerator.

The pan is thin for cast iron, so it's lighter than some cast iron pans, BUT it is just heavy enough. I believe a lot of thought went into this design. Another reviewer comented on not using the pan at high heat. I agree. If you want to sear things at high heat, use plain cast iron. BUT if you use medium heat to gently brown meats and saute and carmelize onions and then lower it to a simmer on your smallest burner, this is where this pan excells! The lids fit beautifully and slow cooking anything in this pan is in a class all its own. You can get away with servingfood without a knife because all you need is a fork! Again if you don't use high heat, cleanup is fast, requiring just a soaking at the worst and usually you can clean it immediately in a matter of minutes.

Leave some room in your fridge, because it will live there as much as it does in your pan closet, when it's not on your cooktop or oven.

Leg of lamb is superb coming out of this pan. Bon apetit!

5-0 out of 5 stars I cook for a living...
We use this one at work. It's a wonderfull, verstatile piece for medium size jobs such as braising, stewing, sweating, roasting, etc. This piece does it all!
Le Creuset quality craftsmanship is the standard in cast iron cookware.
I want one at home...in granite...please?

We be givin' dis biggie 5 mojo*z!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect pot for a narrow application
The good side:
This is the absolute perfect pot for soups, stews, and braising. They are very heavy and do a marvelous job of distributing heat. They look nice. You can put them in the oven. They last forever. All true.

BUT

The enamel will scorch. You *really* have to be sure that you don't let the heat get over medium or you're going to get discoloration. Creuset recommends soaking a discolored pot in a solution of water with a little bleach, and this does work well--up to a point. But not being able to use a pot at a heat over medium means that you have to be thoughtful in how and when you use it. You're not going to make pasta in this pot, or sear a pot roast before braising it. (btw, the top shouldn't go in the oven at high temperatures either.)

So my bottom line is that this is a great pot if you're a pretty darn serious cook and don't mind spending a good bit of money for a tool that is perfect for some jobs, but isn't all that flexible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection
Holds everything.Makes perfect pot roasts.I use all clad MC2 for most cooking, but when I need to braise I use this -- I love it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Weighty But Well Worth It
This large French oven is heavy. If you have difficulty lifting heavy objects into and out of the oven then you will want to consider whether this is the right item for you. That, however, is the only caveat. Otherwise, this is an outstanding piece of kitchen equipment which will enhance everything you cook in it. The larger base of this pot (in comparison with smaller capacity Le Creuset French ovens- which are indeed wonderful) allows you to cook large roasts. Last night, for example, I prepared a beef brisket. I seared the meat on the stovetop, and then finished it in the oven for 4 hours. The gravy it produced was, quite honestly, superior to the result I achieved using the same recipe in a lesser-quality dutch oven. I've had a similar experience with soups; they just taste better cooked in Le Creuset than in stainless steel. Perhaps this is because the enamelled cast iron heats evenly and retains its heat while cooking. Also, this oven is *not* non-stick, which allows you to create a beautiful "de-glazable" fond when cooking meats. Yet the pot cleans up easily- just soak it in some hot, sudsy water and it practically cleans itself. I found that although it is rather large (and, again, heavy) it rests nicely between the center "hump" and outer edge of my double sink, making it easy to lift in and out- a smaller oven would have to be placed down on, and lifted out of, the basin which actually would be a bit more challenging. Overall, I cannot rate Le Creuset highly enough. Don't hesitate to purchase this large oven; it will become the pinnacle of your cookware ensemble. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Big enough to feed an army!
I held off purchasing this behemoth--I thought I would never have a use for such a large "French oven." However, having taken the plunge, I find myself doing all sorts of new things in the kitchen. I have created vast amounts of jams and preserves, and have used this several times for giant family get-togethers (something I never did before).

My latest adventure was packing it up for a big family camping trip! I had a blast--the cast iron makes it very heat-efficient, so the unsteady heat of a campfire is no longer a cooking liability. Clean-up down at the stream was a breeze due to the super-hard porcelain enamel finish. The campfire did make a smoky mess of the exterior of my pot, but this was as easy to clean as the interior. Everyone thought I was crazy for lugging this giant on a camping trip, until they tasted the results: Lip-smacking-good campfire food, with a little gourmet pizzazz!

5-0 out of 5 stars Versatility!
Just want to let you all know that the lid of this 4-1/2 quart pan also fits the 9-1/2" inch Tarte Tatin/Anniversary pan ...

I wanted to buy a small Buffet Casserole (the 2-quart size) to cook chicken & rice or pork chops when it's just my husband and myself, but I decided to buy the Tarte Tatin/"Anniversary" pan (same pan, two different names) instead for two reasons:

1) One less lid in the cupboard
2) I thought the shape of the anniversary pan's flat bottom would be a little bit more useful (I can make Tarte tatin of course, but also: regular cakes (come out delicious, just line this pan with parchment paper -- the cake comes out so perfect you may throw away your cake pans to make space for more Le Creuset cookware, lol), quiche/one pot breakfasts, etc.

Because I can use a lid on top of the anniversary pan, I can also use that anniversary pan to cook dishes with rice in them, poach chicken breats, etc.

Of course, read all the other reviews about this 4-1/2 quart size pan. It's the perfect size pan to cook meals for 6 people.

FYI: If you are trying to decide what size to buy, just to let you know Le Creuset recommends that you choose a pan size where the contents of what you are trying to cook fills the pan at least 50%, if not three-quarters of the way full to the top, to make the most of the radient heat qualities of cast iron (with this cast iron pan, the heat not only travels through the bottom of the pan, but also up the sides -- very different from your usual stainless steal or alumninum pan, which is why you use lower heat with these pans than with stainless steel pans).

If you use too large of a pan, your ingredients may dry out before they are cooked all the way through. Also, if you are cooking rice, if there is too much space at the top (if your pan is only 25 percent full), you may not get enough steam pressure to cook the rice all the way through.

If this is your first pan, get the size of pan you'll use the most of the time, not the size you use when you cook for company. These pans are so addictive, you'll can always buy the bigger size later for specialty recipes.

This 4-1/2 quart is perfect for cooking for 3 to 6 people.

The 3-1/2 quart is perfect for 2 to 4 people.

The 2-1/2 quart is good for 1 or 2 people, or rice for 4 people.
