5-0 out of 5 stars I love Lodge
This is a great griddle/grill. It's a huge chunk of cast iron so it's going to be heavy. You should just expect that. But that's one of the things that make cast iron so great. It's sturdy, indestructible, heats evenly, and holds heat well. It's the closest thing to grilling besides actually firing up the grill. Food cooked on the grill side has a smoky, grilled flavor. The griddle side is great for bacon, sausages, hash browns, fajitas, and cheese steaks. I haven't been brave enough to try pancakes yet. Clean up of the grill side is the only drawback, as even a well-seasoned piece will occasionally have bits that stick and burn, especially at high heat. Even so, this is a very minor inconvenience for such a great piece. A good exhaust hood or a couple of open doors or windows will make use easier also. I just consider it part of the experience. We love to take ours camping. Over the fire or on a camp stove it's a large, versatile piece of cookware. Breakfast for the whole family can cook on one side. Season and wash correctly and this will give you lifetimes of use. I'm sure your kids, grandkids, and great grandkids will love it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Necessity
If you like to grill in the winter, then you should buy this grill! Season it well and follow all the instructions and you'll have no trouble keeping the grill clean. The griddle is great for Sunday morning breakfasts. It is heavy, so you've been warned. Non-stick grills can't compared, as the non-stick peels away after awhile. This grill will last!

2-0 out of 5 stars a big warping heavy messy piece!
I own at least a dozen of the lodge cookware pieces and love them very much but this is not such a great thing. I went through the normal in the oven seasoning that always works just great but this thing warped like a potato chip! It did flatten back out as it cooled but everytime I put it on my two burners to use, it warps again making it very rocky on the stove top and my pancakes looked like Picasso made them. It always flattens back out but it's really a pain in the ah hum to use. The grill side set off all the smoke detectors and left a greasey film on everything in my whole house and I was only using a med low burner, well, at least the door stopped squeeking! It is also a bit to narrow for two rows of pancakes unless you make them very small and the center doesn't get hot enough. Just when you thought you've experienced all the unpleasantness of this pan, you then go to clean it and discover you'd be better off just throwing it out in the yard for the dogs to lick clean! I love you Lodge, I really do but I'll stick to outside grilling and my larger lodge skillet for hotcakes, the 13 inch round pan is a dream as are all the other pieces I own. As for this heavy sticky thing well, I may try it out on my fire ring next cookout and if that doesn't work out, it's yard sale time!

4-0 out of 5 stars No Soap Ever
Once seasoned this is a great, if messy, item to use. Try to set up a surround to catch the splatter. If you can't get your irons from a restaurant going out of business or a farm sale(Check institutions also)season well before first use. A rule of thumb is to use it for french fries for the first 5-6 times. NEVER try to cook starch or sugar foods the first Ten times of use!!!! Pro cooks never use the first crepe even though their pans are well seasoned. For the best seasoning build a fire outside and put the iron in it. This will burn off the wax coating or SOAP residue and tighten up the metal. If that seems a little over the top for you, put it in the bottom of your oven for about a month. Some smoke will always be present when seasoning an iron; which is why I suggest doing it outside or letting your favourite restaurant do it for you. Just drop it off and they will burn and abuse it into terrific shape. In about three months your iron will be like teflon. Ugly as sin,but a great pan. When cleaning: NEVER NEVER use soap!!!(The chinese never use soap in their woks and they are plain sheet steel). I never use soap on the cooking surface of any of my fry pans be they stainless, aluminum or iron(I don't use painted frypans). Just wipe it out with a paper towel or damp cloth and immediately add a light coating of oil. If necessary, use plain hot water and a little E grease. And NEVER EVER let an iron soak.. The next time you use it rub a few drops of oil over the surface, place on the heat then add your cooking oil. Also, whenever possible, after cooking outdoors, use the fine talcum like dust left in the BarBQ. Scour with the ash, rinse well and coat with a neutral oil and put on a heat source if possible. Allow to cool and wipe off residue. Finally,if your not real dedicated to this type of cookware FORGETABOUTIT. It can be a pain. stick with your usual teflon cookware. That's why they invented the stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the trouble of cast-iron care
For pancakes, this iron griddle heats slowly and evenly, and it holds the heat better than a teflon griddle but...you...must...season this and instruct well-meaning helpers NOT, repeat, NOT to use any soap of any kind, sponge, steel wool pad, on the griddle. Ever. If you are worried about cleaning it, you can scrub the surface with a hot, clean water, handful of cooking salt and a clean paper towel. After seasoning, pancakes cook evenly and this is wide enough to go over two burners and really get some production going at breakfast. Just remember about the seasoning and the No-Soap. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars works fine but the handle gets hot
This works great to flatten bacon. I chose this instead of the larger circular one and it fits better in more of my pans. The only question I have is why they didn't spend an extra 50 cents and put a wooden handle instead of a metal one which gets so hot one has to use an oven mitt just to pick up the press.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bacon press
Nice addition to your kitchen if you are cooking bacon, which tend to curl up. The bottom is smooth, with no places for food to catch and hide.

Cavet, the first one I had, the spring on the handle broke. (the wire spring is welded to the wire handle, it must have been overheated as the wire spring broke loose from the handle. Not incapacitating it, as the spring just rolls in you hand, but annoying.) I wrote Lodge Mfg, and they sent a replacement which has worked fine ever since. Hence 4 stars instead of 5.

Requires some assembly, a screwdriver and a small wrench. Easy for any handyperson to do. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

There are lots of fancy cookware materials out there but castiron still trumps them all with its even heating, heat retention, price, and duration. It's these traits that make Lodge cookware favoredby both indoor chefs and campfire cooks alike. The caveat is cast-ironcookware's weight and, at 10 pounds, this griddle will give most chefsa workout. At 9-1/2 by 17-1/2 inches, this griddle is long enough tocover two burners of a stove. The flat side of this reversible griddleis ideal for pancakes, eggs, or grilled sandwiches while the oppositeribbed side works for bacon, chicken, a whole fish, or any foods withfatty drippings. While it usually takes years of cooking to burn on theprized finish that makes cast-iron cookware smooth and stick-free, theLogic line of cookware comes preseasoned to save you some work.Cast-iron pans in this line are coated in a vegetable oil, which isthen baked on in an hot industrial oven to obtain that blackened patinaand silky surface. --Cristina Vaamonde ... 5-0 out of 5 stars loving it
A bit weighty at 10lbs, but how can you go wrong with cast iron? I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I had gotten a reversible grill/griddle from Wisconsin and was completely disappointed (food burned on easily, never washed off and was just a mess), so I was a little shaky about buying another, but I really wanted the convienence of a reversible grill/griddle. But the Lodge is great: food just flakes up off of it (no soap!), making cleaning quick and easy. I can cook pancakes, bacon and eggs in the morning and then grilled cheese in the afternoon and one doesn't taste like the other. I'm just very happy with this product. However, it is heavy, so be prepared for that. And with the pre-seasoned has handles, so it may or may not fit into your oven. Be prepared for that. And every time you cook with it, you need to oil it. Be prepared for that, too. But other than that, this is a great product that a kitchen is lucky to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good versatile product
This is absolutely perfect for use outside, e.g. camping, on the grill, fire pit, etc. It's also great indoors for pancakes, eggs and hashbrowns. However forget grilling meats indoors unless your range hood fan has "super turbo setting". I attempted to grill steaks and within 5 min. the whole house filled with smoke and the smoke alarms started screaming. (I hate that )! With that said, used in the ways I stated above I have no problem recommending it. This griddle is a great addition to my growing cast iron collection

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm in love with Lodge cast iron
This is an awesome grill. If you're carnivores, you will not believe how delicious it grills steaks. You just have to follow their directions to take care of the iron which is no big deal. My first piece, the 12" skillet, I bought unseasoned. It was a bit of a mess (though still worth it), but I decided to buy the rest with Lodge's preseasoning. Every time you use it it gets better.

I now own the 8" skillet, the 12" skillet, the 5 qt. dutch oven, and the grill/griddle. Amazon's prices are insanely cheap, especially with the free shipping. I got all of these pieces for about [$$]. Almost half the price of other cooking web sites!

4-0 out of 5 stars Give your arms a workout!
I am new to cast iron cookware and this is also my first stovetop griddle. I love that it's pre-seasoned, but even then, I managed to burn my pancakes on the first try. I'd turned the electric burners on to High: rookie mistake. Now I set it to Medium-High. Problem solved. My husband swears hamburgers taste better on this grill than in our George Foreman grill.

The cons of this are characteristic of any cast iron cookware. First of all, it's HEAVY. Storing it was a problem until I found it fit perfectly in the drawer beneath my oven. And unlike a previous reviewer, I had no trouble with this not fitting in my oven or on my stove top (we have a slide-in range; it might not fit as well on a free-standing range where the temp control panel might get in the way). Maintenance is another issue, but care instructions are included, so read them carefully. You will need a metal scourer to keep it clean and lots of nonstick spray to keep it rust-free. I wrap my grill in aluminium foil after cleaning to keep it from getting everything else greasy.

Bottomline: cooks great, high maintenance, and lasts multiple lifetimes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites for grilling indoors
I stopped using anything with teflon years ago, and have been using some old but not perfectly seasoned pans off and on. This new "pre seasoning in the factory"is FABULOUS. I can't imagine finding a better performing grill pan anywhere, even for a higher price, the grill is significantly raised up and yet is HOT leaving perfect grill marks and cooking beautifully.

I use a stiff nylon brush with hot water and it cleans up perfectly. Then I use a paper towel to dry and a quick spray with oil and blot and spread with another paper towel and done. Do not fear cast iron anymore!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Grilling Indoors
I love this pan! Living in an apartment and not having an outdoor grill, I had been craving a good steak. I cooked a perfect NY Strip with my Lodge pan, and can't wait to have another! No need to go to the Outback now! Also, it seemed I could never grill a chicken breast right in my non-stick, without it ending up too tough or practically burned on one side. With the Lodge grill pan, it cooked evenly and perfect! I am so glad I got this pan!

Make sure you read the directions on how to care for your grill pan, if you have never used cast iron before. No soap! Sometimes it may be tougher to clean, compared to non-stick and other pans, but just soak it and use some elbow grease. I think it is worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative
I looked at several different options - such as the Foreman grill before settling on this grill pan. Although I have a small back patio, I've never used a bbq and wouldn't be comfortable doing so, not to mention I'm just cooking for one so the time spent setting it up wouldn't be worth it to me. The Foreman grill, based on reviews, didn't sound like it would be easy to clean and wasn't reliable. The grill pan looked like the perfect solution. Although the pan is heavy, there are two handles which makes it easy to move and carry over to the sink. Following advice I'd found on the internet, I use cooking spray generously and bought a wire scrub brush to clean it with. The pan does create smoke so I'm always sure to turn on the kitchen fan and open the back door before I even turn the stove on as well as disconnect the smoke detector. The pan heats up fairly quickly and cooks the food evenly and quickly. I must admit I don't use it frequently and have only tried a handful of foods, but I have been pleased with my experiences and would recommend this item.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
This is a great pan. I love all of the cast iron products that I have bought from Amazon.com. They are a great design and easy to cook with.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Southern Girl Has Come Back To Her Roots
I honestly cannot say enough good things about this pan. At first I was skeptical and a little hesistant about cooking with cast iron. Growing up in the south I knew the magic of cast iron cornbread made with fatback, but I also knew the special care that went into seasoning the beloved pieces of cookware. When I saw that this was preseasoned I went for it. I worried that it might be a lightweight pan and only sublime quality for the price but I was pleasantly surprised. This pan has a heavy weight to it and is crafted solidly. I've used it for hamburgers (they make the best I've ever tasted), grilled chicken, pork chops, and shrimp (YUM). Something I learned is that things tend to stick a little so coating the pan with vegetable spray is a good idea. Also, try soaking your shrimp in a mixture of butter and garlic before grilling it. I am in love, it hasn't even left my kitchen counter to go into the cabinet since I bought it because I use it so much. My husband being a Yankee wasn't used to the goodness of the cast iron but now that he sees how perfectly it browns meat while still leaving it moist he is hooked. With this pan I find the grooves to be so helpful. You can season the meat without worrying about all the seasoning burning to the pan. Also they're nice and deep so that the fat that does run off actually stays off the meat. Cleaning it is SO easy! I just run hot water into the pan while it's still hot from the stove then use a sponge or dish towel (NO SOAP) to wipe it out, rinse it off, and then spray with vegetable spray while it's warm before putting it away. I have to say that Lodge has a loyal fan in me. With quality old time cookware like this, without the hassle of seasoning it first you can't go wrong. ... Read more

Product Description

The one thing that probably discourages more people from purchasing and using cast iron is maintenance. Like carbon steel woks, cast iron cooking pieces require "seasoning." To many this is a mysterious or overly time-consuming process. Even if you treasure fond memories of eggs and pancakes cooked in grandmother's ancient, blackened skillet, you might have no idea how to turn your new pan into such a treasure. Fortunately Lodge has come out with the new Logic line, which has been evenly coated on all surfaces with an electrostatic spray of vegetable oil. Next the cookware is put into an extremely high temperature industrial oven which bakes the coating into the surface. Not only will you be spared the time and effort of seasoning, but also the new piece you buy will look and perform better than if you had seasoned it at home. Just like that heirloom pan you will find that even pineapple upside down cake doesn't stick to this surface. The ribbed bottom of this pan allows grease to puddle away from what you're cooking, all the while making those desirable stripes across fish, beast, or fowl. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for indoor grilling!
This is a great size for 4 burgers or two large steaks. Great for grilling any meat. I had a Calphalon grill pan and the cleanup was horrible, this one is a breeze & it will last forever. I highly recommend it and all Lodge cookware.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best burger you'll ever make indoors!
It's cast iron, so you can run this pan as hot as you dare to sear the flavor in. Makes excellent burgers and brats, with nice grill marks but no burned spots, even when well-done. Try that with a George Foreman and your burger will be black outside and dryer than the Mojave Desert inside.

The square pan provides plenty of room to fry up a few burgers and the hot juices in the bottom are made-to-order for sauteeing a few mushrooms, onions, or peppers to go on top. The handle is fatter than older Lodge designs and quite ergonomic as long as you're wearing an oven mitt. Cleans nicely by boiling a little water in the pan and giving it a quick scrub with a stiff round natural-bristle vegetable brush and the hottest water that'll come out of the tap.

I would recommend this pan over the 11.5" one Lodge also offers because the thicker bottom, smaller sides, and deeper walls of the 10.5" pan provide fairly even heat over the entire grill surface. It appears that the 11.5" pan is based on the griddle of the same size, and my 11.5" griddle is hot near the center and cooler near the edges when used on a burner - OK for hash browns, but bad for burgers, grilled cheese, and such.

Excellent product; if you can't grill outside, this pan is the next best thing! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Lodge has been making cast-iron cookware for over 100 years, and thanks to cast iron's excellent durability, some of the original pans are probably still around. It's not hard to see why cast-iron pans are the ones most often passed down from generation to generation--nothing can dent, warp, or bend their heavy construction. This 9-inch griddle pan will meet all grilling needs without any decrease in quality as it ages. In fact, unlike many cooking surfaces, cast iron becomes more stick-resistant with use. Cast iron also has excellent heat retention, so dishes don't need to be cooked over extremely high temperatures. If you're concerned about nutrition, cast iron has been proven to safely add iron to food. Because iron can rust, this pan should not be immersed in water for long periods and should stay out of the dishwasher. Just wash it with soap and water, avoiding abrasive cleaners. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars cheap on the material
I am a great fan of cast iron cookware and have quite a few pieces. The 10-1/2 in. round griddle is my first by Lodge however, I just happened to see it on sale and bought it. Although I think the overall quality is good, I soon realized the handle was much too short. I do not have large hands (I'm 5'8" and 145 lbs. male) yet handling the pan is really awkward especially if the handle or my hand is wet (forget soapy). In fact I have a couple of 10-1/2 in. skillets (not Lodge nor both the same brand) that even though they are heavier they are much easier to handle because they weren't so stingy with the amount of material used for the handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better non-stick than non-stick
I always hated cast iron. It looked old and dirty to me, even
when it was thoroughly cleaned. I also thought it wasn't modern enough to have in my house. After watching FoodTv and watching a few chefs cook with it, I bought my first cast iron pan at the Lodge outlet store in S. Pittsburg,TN and instantly became a fan of cast iron.

I like the way it retains heat. It fearlessly goes from range top to oven and I don't have to worry about composite handles. It's non-stick and I don't have to worry about damaging the surface with utensils when cooking. It does take a little care to maintain it in well seasoned condition but it's worth the effort.

I don't use it for acidic foods because I find that I have to
re-season them. My cast iron collection continues to grow.
I use my round griddles for breakfast foods instead of all the electric griddles that I leave to collect dust in the pantry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Usable, but seriously flawed
In the mid 1980's I was fortunate enough to purchase a Wagner cast iron griddle. I loved it so much that I later bought another griddle. This time it was a Lodge. Wow' what a difference! The Wagner was twice as expensive but the difference between the two was worth two times that. The Wagner handle was large. smooth edged, and ergonomically shaped (not all Wagner griddles have this feature). The Lodge handle was short, sharp edged, and hard to hold. The cooking surface of the Wagner was much smoother, providing a much better non-stick experience. The curve around the edge was gentler, making spatula access near the edges easier. In short, every design shortcoming one could imagine was in the Lodge griddle but not in the Wagner. I love to cook with the Wagner. I no longer cook with the Lodge. Unfortunately this Wagner griddle is hard to find online.

Cast iron griddles are, however pretty wonderful. If you have ever tried to stir-fry little blocks of tofu you might find that the browned tofu sticks to just about any 'non-stick' coating. But if you use a good, seasoned, pre-heated, and oiled cast iron griddle, the golden crust that is the essence of good tofu cookery sticks to the tofu and not the pan. Cook just one meal and you will be hooked. ( I make tofu stroganoff using blended, silken tofu instead of sour cream and get a reasonably healthy version of a great, fatty classic.)

Cast iron is also the choice for browning large, flat slabs of meat - steaks, chops, etc. It is also a good choice for making hash browns and home fries.

It is possible to make pancakes on cast iron griddles if you are working with a good, evenly heated electric stove, but don't try it on a gas range; the thermal conduction of the griddle is not high enough to get even browning. You will get blackened centers and/or uncooked edges. It's a flaw that may also show up with the large slabs of meat.

The only reason to rate this griddle higher than 3 stars is because you cannot get the real thing any more. Hardly a good reason, IMHO.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Value Cast Iron
This is the first piece of cast iron cookware I've ever owned. I give a 3 1/2 stars since it has been used only a few times.

Here are the reasons why I like this cast iron griddle:
1) it is a good value;
2) it heats up very fast even on an electric stove;
3) It is versatile--can be used in the oven.

Here are the reasons why I don't like the griddle:
1) The handle is way too short; Lodge needs to redesign the handle by adding another 3 inches. I wouldn't mind paying extra $$ for one with a better handle out there.
2) It is slightly discolored although it has been used only three times to cook crepes, pancake and salmon.

Maybe Lodge will take heed of all their customers' input and improve its products soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for making 3 egg omlets
I love cooking with cast iron. This pan is great for making those 3 egg omlets, pancakes, fried eggs, etc. The low lip makes it easy to get the spatula under the eggs and flip them. On the down side if you fry bacon or sausages in it, the grease will spatter the stove. On a campfire that of course won't be a problem.

However if you have limited space in your kitchen cabinet get the combo cooker. The lid is nearly as large as this one and you get the fry pan as well.

On the plus side, this pan being thin fits right under the stack of cast iron pans I already own. So if you cook for a large family and want to serve everyone faster, this is a good way to go as an additional pan. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as shown in the picture!!!!
Beware before you buy this product... the wooden base shown in the picure is NOT included!! I'm not sure why they call this a "serving" griddle because without the base it's pretty much useless for actually bringing to the table. All you get is a thin, flat, oval-shaped piece of cast iron with a small raised lip around the edge.

Ironically, even Amazon customer service seems to be unaware that the item does not include the base. After receiving my inital order for two of them, I contacted customer service about the "missing" bases, and they initiated a replacement shipment. The replacement order arrived today... but sadly, once again... no bases!! Now I'm stuck with having to return two orders. Very disappointed! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

By squaring this pan and flaring its sides, Lodge offers extra cooking room for steaks, fish, burgers, or any food that benefits from stovetop grilling and the caramelized flavor imparted by seared grill marks. The ribs in the pan's bottom not only provide those grill marks, but they also elevate foods so that fat collects between them for low-calorie cooking. Because cast iron is unmatched for retaining heat and distributing it evenly--no hot spots--foods will cook uniformly in the 10-1/2-inch pan. It's heavy, must be seasoned by coating with melted shortening and then baking, and needs to be coated with oil or cooking spray after each use to prevent rust. Cast iron's weight and care puts off some cooks. But, as has been known since the Middle Ages, it permits precision and flavor-retention in cooking, is naturally nonstick when seasoned, and lasts for generations--thereby increasing its value. As it blackens with use, cast iron imparts to food a mystical aura of rustic nourishment and flavor. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Kitchen Tool
This pan has allowed me to make a variety of both grilled meats and vegetables both look and taste wonderful. It holds heat evenly and allows me to look like a star cook to my family. With a good seasoning, this pan will last you for years and years and years.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but Could be Better
The grill pan is wonderful except it needs a lid to keep in the flavor and to speed up the cooking process. My husband accidentally put the grill pan in the dishwasher and when I removed it; it had rust all over it. I had to throw it out. Never make this mistake!

5-0 out of 5 stars If I were on a desert island & were allowed one kitchen item
This would probably be it. although I would really lament not having my french press, too.

I love, love, love my grill pan. it really does a great job at searing in moisture, making everything I've cooked on it so good.

it's a little rough to clean, yet. you can't exactly throw it in the dishwasher. I am finding, as it seasons more and more, it gets easier to clean.

I do find that as I use this, my efforts at searing cloud the whole kitchen with smoke, but I suspect this is entirely a reflection on my cooking abilities, and not, in fact, the spendid grill pan.

if you have a family, you're going to want/need two or more of these. it's big, but not big enough to manage more than a couple of breasts/steaks, etc.

and try "grilling" corn on this baby sometime. yeah. it's pretty tasty.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best burger you'll ever make indoors
It's cast iron, so you can run this pan as hot as you dare to sear the flavor in. Makes excellent burgers, with nice grill marks but no burned spots, even done all the way through.

Cleans nicely by boiling a little water in the pan and giving it a quick scrub with a stiff round natural-bristle vegetable brush.

ONE MINOR DETAIL - I own the pre-seasoned Lodge Logic version of this pan, which is not currently offered by Amazon. You'll have to season this pan yourself, and I can't vouch for whether it will work as well as the pre-seasoned version.

5-0 out of 5 stars So cheap, so useful
I am a novice cook and this is my first cast iron thingamabobber. I seasoned it easily per directions. It is easy to use, easy to clean, and can't be beat for tortillas. It is essentially nonstick, doesn't try to get away from you on the stove, and makes you look like you know what you're doing. I'm considering more cast iron, perhaps a deep frier (but I'm afraid of the effect on my waistline and arteries) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!
This griddle seasoned up without any trouble at all, and consistently produces excellent eggs and pancakes. The griddle heats evenly, but because of its size needs a large burner to operate effectively. That's the only caveat, and I don't consider it a problem. It's just that, if you're going to cover it literally corner-to-corner, you need a large burner (or just do your bacon in the oven).

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't live without it!
I love cast iron and have pans handed down to me from my grandmother. But this square pan tops them. No sides easy access. It cooks a steak great. I have given up my George.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful griddle.
I own several cast iron utensils but I probably use this one the most. It has a semi permanent place on my stove where it
is used most frequently for bacon, sausage or browning meats
especially chicken for casseroles. I also use it outside for blackened fish for which it is superb. It needs a little more
seasoning because it still sticks at times. My mother has one that is 50 years old that is the most perfect of pans. Nothing cooks like cast iron.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Beats a Cast Iron Griddle
After seasoning this griddle, I have found that it quickly became one of my favorite cooking pieces. For breakfast, french toast or pancakes, bacon and sausage...griddle works like a dream. For lunch, I picked up the griddle again and made some grilled cheese sandwiches and Tuna melts. For dinner...the grill was used again, a steak for hubby, cheeseburgers for me, oh and that 8 year old...he wanted hot dogs. No problem here, the grill make cooking quick and easy.
I just love it!!

1-0 out of 5 stars A poor performer.
I own and use 3 other Lodge cast iron pans which are excellent. I bought this one to cook bacon, eggs and pancakes, thinking the square shape would be perfect. It isn't. The corners of the pan never heat up to the temperature of the center, even after preheating for as much as 15 minutes. The ends of the bacon in the corners never get crispy, the parts of pancakes in the corners never get brown.
A big disappointment from a company I trusted. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This two-piece cast-iron combo takes care of most stovetop needs. The bottom is a 3-quart pan that works either as a fry pan or a saucepan, while the tight-fitting lid doubles as a griddle for stir-frying or grilling. Both pieces are built to last--nothing tops cast iron for durability. Unlike many cooking surfaces, cast iron becomes more stick-resistant as it ages. Cast iron has excellent heat retention, so there's no need to cook over extremely high temperatures and dishes will stay warm in the pan. Cast iron also safely adds iron to your food. Because iron can rust, this pan should not be immersed in water for long periods, and it should stay out of the dishwasher. Just wash it with soap and water, avoiding abrasive cleaners. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect if you cook for only 1 or 2 people
This is my first piece of cast iron, so I was a little (I admit stupidly) surprised at how incredibly heavy this was, especially when the two pieces are combined to use as a dutch oven. The handles are also relatively short, which makes it more difficult to pick up, especially when it's hot. You will definitely need 2 really good oven mitts to handle this!

I also had to re-season it twice, since I used too much shortening the first time, resulting in a sticky film that wouldn't cook away. But once it was properly seasoned, I've loved using it. I use it often enough that the weight is never a factor because I just leave it on my stovetop even when it's not in use. I am amazed at how completely non-stick it is, even though I've only had it a short while. Just make sure the first couple of things you cook in it are fatty, like bacon, and nothing will ever stick to it, ever again.

It gets very hot very fast, and it heats evenly and cooks things VERY quickly, especially eggs. It also stays hot for quite a while longer even when you turn the heat off, which means it keeps cooking, so keep that in mind if you're not going to be moving your dish onto a different plate or bowl for serving.

Clean-up is also incredibly easy: a tablespoon of kosher salt mixed with canola oil to make a paste, scour this around with a paper towel, then rinse with water and dry. It takes less than a minute!

It is a little on the smaller side, which hasn't been a problem for me since I usually only cook for myself and sometimes one other person. But if there was a 5- or 6-quart version, I would probably want to get that one, especially if you cook for more than just yourself. And cast iron only gets better with age, so aside from upgrading in size, I see myself using this pot for a long time to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just keeps getting better!
I am a total newbie to cast iron...why did it take me so long to try this?

The lid makes an excellent fry pan, (double duty). Try taking your favorite fish, (I use salmon), season (I use lemon juice, pepper, season salt, a little garlic powder and a hint of dill), sear it on one side, flip it and then put it in a 350 degree preheated oven for about 8 minutes, (till flaky). Oh it is mouth watering! This is so good because it sears the outside for maximum flavor, and the weight of it holds the heat beautifully while moving it to the oven, where it continues to sear the other side and bake the rest.

The non stick quality is unbeatable. I couldn't understand how this could be true...but it is the best!

Clean up takes all of hmmm, how long does it take to wipe a paper towel across it? Nothing sticks to it at all. It doesn't need to be washed...I just preheat it the next time I use it which keeps it bacteria free. And I use it so often I just leave it on the burner, LOL. I just love it!

As far as the bottom part of it...great item too. I use that mostly for deep frying foods, and stir frying. If I could give this one a 4 thumbs up I would, (since it is not just a lid and a pan, it is a lid, a fry pan, a baking pan, stir fry pan and a 3 quart cooker)!

I should note, when I first got this I thought it was pretty heavy. But now that is one of the things I like about it, it is solid and I know that I will NEVER have to replace this or buy another fry pan/cooker. I wont complain it would be like complaining that gold is too shiny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lodge indoor/outdoor cast iron cooker
This is really a handy little - well, not so little - item. Great for camp or home. It's really two pans in one. The lid doubles as a round griddle, great for eggs, bacon, tortillas, fajitas, etc. The large bottom cooker serves in conjunction with the lid as a small Dutch oven, fryer, deep fry pan, what have you for soups, stews, fried chicken, etc.

Seasons readily and reflects the best cast iron quality available today. I don't know how I got by without this item - I can probably do away with a good half-dozen pots and pans now that I have it.

It's a real bargain at the price offered. Now that I've used it I probably would pay twice the price to replace it if anything ever happened to it - but (one of the blessings of cast iron cook ware) - if you don't loan it out and no one steals it, it'll outlast you.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2 uses at once
I use this for making oatmeal and frying Tofu bacon. It is a pot and a skillet, stores away compactly. Meaning you do not have a pot and a seperate fry pan, so if space saving is important, good use. Am also planning to use these over a campfire this summer (03). See how it does when I am playing Cookie the Ranch Cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't sure but now I am completely sold!
I love it!! It has replaced so many items in my kitchen. I no longer need my dutch oven, my frying pan or my griddle. It is the perfect size for us. I have used it on the grill and in the oven. I dont know how I lived without it. Very heavy, nice quality. ... Read more
