2-0 out of 5 stars Great grinder -- for a few months...
I loved this grinder when I first bought it. That it has an espresso doser was a big plus. And for a few months this was a great little machine. Soon, though, grounds started jamming up the burr. Then, when grinding fine coffee, it would block the exit into the ground coffee receptacle. It seemed like I was taking the thing apart every day. This caused the bean holder to crack, and now it's unusable. I guess I could get some of the parts repaired, but for ... bucks, I would expect a little more than 3 months of trouble free operation. Fortunately I have an old blade grinder available while I search for a really good, sturdy burr grinder...

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Grinder except for one not-so-little thing
I was having problems finding espresso ground for a pump machine (this is a fairly remote area), so I figured that if I bought the grinder to go with my espresso machine (the Briel Chamnoix), it'd solve the problem.

It did. The grind is perfect. The dosing is perfect. In fact, I _love_ this machine! And I can't begin to tell you the difference it's made in the quality of the espresso. (Both in terms of taste _and_ crema). I've not even had the problem with jamming reported by other users.

So what is the problem? It's messy. It throws ground coffee everywhere: on the counter, the walls, the floor. . . I'm cleaning up around the thing at least twice a day, and the amount of ground espresso that lands on the counter usually adds up to enough to make a cup of espresso for every four I make using the doser.

So, while I heartily recommend this machine, it's definately NOT the grinder for anyone concerned with state of their countertops.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
The interchangeable doser is very messy. I only use the storage container and no coffee leaks out. In my opinion for $49 this grinder is a great deal. It arrived a couple of days ago and I have been using it non stop. Grind setting (#1) works great with my espresso machine. So far so good.

2-0 out of 5 stars messy
The grinding is OK, But you can't touch the unit with out getting coffee grinds on the counter, etc.,doser is useless ! cost me over $100. putting a paper towel under it & holding it together while grinding(as said in other reviews)is a bit lame for a unit of this price !

1-0 out of 5 stars Briel CG5B Java Heavy-Duty Coffee Grinder
I needed a grinder to use with a drip coffee machine and an espresso machine. I chose the Briel CG5B Java Heavy-Duty Coffee Grinder because it came with an espresso doser. When I got the grinder I attached the doser and put in some beans to grind. I was very pleased with the ability to grind coffee as fine or coarsely as you could ever want but I was very disappointed by the doser. It just doesn't work. The coffee gets clogged and doesn't come out until it can fall onto the counter and create a huge mess. This grinder will grind coffee but it feels flimsy and is more trouble than it is worth. There are lots of coffee grinders and many for better prices. Choose one of them. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Briel's Mutli-Pro EG281 espresso machine is backed by the company's 30-plus years in the coffee business, and it shows--this model's focused on presenting café-quality espresso and cappuccino to the home user. To get this high quality, the EG281 has a number of extraordinary features, starting with the attached grinder. The grinder's many settings, from very fine to coarse, account for the many types of beans available. When using different beans, it should be adjusted to find the ideal grind; the adjustment is also necessary to find the right grind in differing temperatures and humidity levels. After the proper grind is found, it places exactly 7 grams, the required amount for one cup of espresso, into the holder.

This Briel also gives a lot of control over the final product, due in part to its Auto Espresso Flow system. This system lets the coffee strength be set according to taste--from a strong, Italian-style short cup to a larger, less-robust brew. The espresso is brewed at the required 190 degrees F, and the machine has 15 bars of pump pressure. And it's speedy, making two cups in about 35 seconds. It also makes good cappuccino, thanks to its included frothing wand, which has its own temperature control. Some other nice features include a CremaMaster filter, which provides a richer crema on each espresso, and an exterior water lever indicator. In shining stainless steel and sturdy black plastic, this machine won't shame any counter. It has 1,360 watts of power, measures 16-1/4 by 12-1/4 by 10 inches (length by height by depth), and has a 10-year pump warranty.--A.J. Rathbun

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Espresso Machine PLUS Built In Grinder
This is the first Espresso machine I have ever owned so I don't have another one to compare it to but I can say that it makes Lattes as good as any I have had at Starbucks. I especially like the "Auto Espresso Flow" feature that allows you to set the strength of the espresso based on how much water is pumped through the machine. I have got it set where I like and now all I have to do is push the button. Friends have told me that they have to monitor the time on their espesso machines which seems far less convenient. I put off buying an espresso machine for a long time because they looked like to much trouble to make but I have to say that with the pods, espresso is easier than coffee from my drip coffee maker and lattes are only a little bit more time consuming. Do get the pods because once you use them you will never go back. I didn't get them when I first bought the machine and probably only used the machine once a week. I went back on line and bought the pods from Amazon (which are excellent) and I now make a latte almost every day because it is so easy. I figured out that once I go through my BOX of 150 the Machine will have almost paid for itself since a comparable latte at Starbucks is about (dollar amount) and the pods are very inexpensive.

However, it's also great to have the built in coffee grinder. This is a quality burr grinder, as I learned from the Briel people. You can grind fresh whole bean coffee, dose the ground coffee directly into the filter holder and instantly brew a perfect fresh espresso, from bean to cup!

This machine is a home run and I would recommend it not only for home use but also for the office. Everyone likes a "fresh" coffee on command.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Espresso Lover
A friend of mine had the BRIEL EG281 multi-pro with built in coffee grinder. They absolutely love having fresh coffee beans ground on the spot, then placed in a filter holder for an "instant" espresso. I was surprised at the rich crema and texture that the espresso coffee was extracted from the machine, which proves to me this machine is a winner. It takes a strong pump to give a proper espresso.

Then it blew my mind when I learned you can also use the coffee pod or serving. I've had illycaffe in the past and actually like the pods my friend had better. The extraction was even richer with the pod and there was absolutely no messy cleanup.

I've had an entry level pump espresso machine from Krups and found it to be marginal at best. I'm sold on BRIEL and this MULTI-PRO machine is great. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the one with the built in grinder or the one with the built in 10-cup drip coffeemaker. Maybe I'll have to get both!

4-0 out of 5 stars Where to obtain parts!
Hey folks,

Same gasket problem as most folks had, but SOLVED! Coffee and coffee grain used to piss all over the place out from on top of the filter holder due to a badly deteriorated gasket.

The technical support team for Briel here in Canada are very informative and very comprehensive. The numbers for support are:

U.S.A. = 1-800-763-6699
Canada = 1-905-660-9958

You can obtain parts ordering information for the nearest distributor near you. The gasket is easily user-serviced and no take-apart is necessary. Simply flip the machine over, grab the smallest flat-head screwdriver you can buy, get a flashlight, locate the silicone gasket and gently pry it out with the screwdriver. Order a replacement gasket from one of the distributors, pop it back in place and start enjoying amazing espresso pulls again!

The distributor they recommended to me was:

Café Express Distributon
Sainte-Foie, Quebec (near Montreal)
1-418-654-1419

They have replacement parts for all Briel models available.

Enjoy folks!

James

1-0 out of 5 stars Briel: DO NOT BUY
I was in love with my Briel - for exactly two weeks.

That is how long it took for this unit to fail.

DO NOT BUY this machine, it is not a quality product and will fail. Within two weeks the seal on the tank ruptured and machine was dead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like the commercial machines!
I am having a great time making straight espresso and cafe con leche ( I am from Miami) with this machine. After you find the right balance that works for you between the amount of coffee and the amount of water, ( it takes a little trial and error), you are good to go. The crema is really rich in every cup. The grinder measures out just the amount you like. I have the pods on order; they are good for the one shot when your in a hurry. I highly recommend this system. If there was one thing that could use improvement, it is the manual. I had better luck with the BRIEL website, that has a virtual manual. www.briel.pt/index.html But otherwise, enjoy a solid, smooth running system. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This compact machine automatically grinds coffee beans and then produces espresso with push-button ease. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. An electronic control lets you select the amount of espresso brewed each time, from 2 to 8 ounces. The self-cleaning grinder, adjustable from fine to coarse, holds 3-1/2 ounces of coffee beans (enough for about 12 cups of espresso) and automatically grinds coffee into the filter inside the filter holder for one cup or two, depending on choice. The grinder can also fill the machine's removable coffee container with enough coffee for 10 espresso servings, or it can be used to grind coffee for a household's drip coffee machine.

Other noteworthy features include a 30-serving water tank with intake water filter, an antidrip system, a patented filter for thick crema, a die-cast filter holder for minimum heat loss, a frothing attachment on the steam nozzle for cappuccino foam and lattes, and two drawers in the base for storing filters, sweeteners, and other supplies. A measuring spoon and instruction video accompany the 12-1/2-by-12-by-8-1/2-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use - Lots of Options!
This is a great machine for someone who like to have control over the how strong their espresso is and likes the option of steaming milk or using the quick froth attachment. I also really like having the grinder, which is adjustable, right on the machine. It's a great addition to any kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
I love this machine- it was given to me as gift- I lost some of the attachments- so I can not make some of the stuff-
However, I use it mostly to make expresso- and Its easy to clean- fast and makes GREAT expresso~! I like to use Bustelo- and that makes a big difference in the taste... unless I grind some fancy beans-

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice for a while, but......
For a while, at least, it was been a nice machine; a good introduction to making espresso at home. After about 3 years, I have to join those who are disappointed with this machine. In the last several months it's progressively deteriated. Sometimes it manages to successfully pump water through the grounds, sometimes not; the portofilter sometimes will not hold pressure; and lately whenever it's heated for steaming, large amounts of steam stream out of the brew area. Time to shop for another machine.

1-0 out of 5 stars Messy, leaky, inconsistent brews
My Briel Portofino began leaking like a sieve after about 4 months of use. Virtually every seam on the plastic chassis
oozes water now, and the frothing nozzle spits out a steady
stream of water every time the brew button is pushed. Every pull requires a combination of paper towels and sponges. I will replace soon---not with another Briel.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a gamble.
I have owned one of these machines for five years. When it works, it can produce a good pull. However, you need to know what you are after and experiment until you can reproduce what you want. Service provided for the machine is poor. I have had mine serviced twice and both times it was returned poorly repaired. Briel's customer service is non-existent as far as I could discover. I had to have it serviced locally, but they can't get parts so they made do. Still, I did get five years of daily use from it (over 2000 pulls) and so I ordered a new one. This one was received factory packed incomplete and the casing was damaged (before leaving factory). It's a gamble. I will cannibalize my old one to make this one function. ... Read more
