Amazon.com Review

Heavy enough for everyday use and elegant enough for company, this flatware suits any occasion and then goes into the dishwasher. It's made of durable 18/10 stainless steel, polished to a mirror finish. Substantial length (9-inch knives), width, and heft qualify it as European size--the kind of flatware that might be found in an upscale bistro. Teardrop-shaped spoons and strikingly tapered handles contribute a contemporary look to this Manor pattern. The 45 pieces break down into complete table settings for 8 plus a 5-piece "hostess" set of serving pieces. A single setting consists of knife, fork, soup spoon, salad fork, and teaspoon. The hostess set consists of 6-inch sugar spoon, 7-inch butter knife, 8-1/2-inch serving fork, 8-1/4-inch serving spoon, and 8-1/4-inch pierced serving spoon. Properly cared for, this flatware should last a lifetime and beyond. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent qualilty!
We bought a set of Henckels flatware for ourselves and have since purchased two additional sets for gifts. They have a weight to them that other comparably priced stainless flatware doesn't have, are very attractive, and this particular style looks great with both traditional and contemporary table settings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality
We recently purchased a 45 pc set of Manor at a retail outlet in Wichita, KS. I am trying to find more 5 pc settings of the knife, forks, and spoons. Is there any source?

Thank you,

4-0 out of 5 stars Henckels Manor Flatware
I love the look of this flatware. When I purchased the Henckel flatware, I was looking for an affordable everyday service that would look good and perform well. Henckels did exactly that, they look great on the table and have some weight to them. My only complaint is that the knives tend to spot in the dishwasher. However, if occasionally washed by hand the spotting clears up. I purchased a 45 piece set and will purchase another. It's great to have extra on hand for company.

Amazon.com Review

A great gift, this set provides a cook with enough versatility to accomplish most kitchen tasks. The chef's knife, with a broad blade and curved cutting edge for rocking through a chopping task, chops, minces, slices, and dices. The utility knife slices, cuts, and chops; its 6-inch blade is large enough to trim a chuck roast or subdue a head of lettuce. The paring knife cuts, peels, and cleans fruits and vegetables. Classic three-rivet handles distinguish Pro S from Henckels' other quality lines: TwinStar, Five Star, and Four Star. Pro S handles are heavier and its knives less weight-forward. Handles are also smaller, a feature those with small hands may appreciate. The steel used in the Pro S line is identical to that of the Five and Four Star lines. High-tech welding of larger knives combines three steel types into what appears to be a single piece so a knife's parts have distinct characteristics. The paring knife is forged. While this set is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great knives !
Although some people reported poor quality control for the handles and tops of these knives, I do not agree. The set I recently received is flawless. The blades are sharp and the handle finish is smooth and even. When in use, these knives have perfect balance and work better than any I have used.

If you want the BEST in a quality knife set, you can't go wrong with these. I look forward to adding additional pieces to my collection and won't hesitate to buy the Pro S.

5-0 out of 5 stars These are real knives
Our old knives were hand-me-down stainless no-name junk. These are real knives, nice weight and very sharp. I like the classic style handles that are absolutely smooth and comfortable. I'm keeping the old knives for my wife who is afraid of sharp knives and tends to use them for prying, scraping, etc...

This time of year (late summer/fall) in the northeast is tomato time. The 6" utility knife and the parer are tremendous with tomatoes and they just slide through slippery onion and pepper skins. Makes me feel like I know what I'm doing.

Can't wait to cut up a pineapple, or to cut the skin and fat off of a chicken breast with these knives when doing the same with my old knives was a harrowing experience.

Different kitchenware sites recommend using a magnetic strip to hold knives and we've used one for years, but I bought a Henckels block for these knives so that they wouldn't scratch.

I have found that they do show scratches easilly, like when using the scouring side of a two sided sponge (some light scratches on the parer). This in no way effects thier utility, but I'll be careful in the future. You really should use a soft cloth to wash them (as recommended).

For the holidays (it's my job to carve the turkey), I plan on buying the carver.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 STAR Rating U BET !
These Knifes come sharp as Razors a little Honeing and you can shave Your Beard with them Perfect Balance for My wife I would of Rather had the 12 inch instead of the 10 inch but these are HER Knife's Not going to fight with her about her beloved Knifes! OUCHThese are used every day Just wash clean by Hand Cloth and Soap, Put them back in the block and they are ready again! Great Knifes High Priced but worth it because of the knifes being so well balanced..........Great Items as a Starter set!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts through potatoes like butter
I used to hate cutting vegetables. I was terrified of cutting myself, because I had to push so hard on the knives to get them through harder vegetables (like carrots and potatoes). When I got the Henckels Pro S Chef's knife, the first thing I used it on was potatoes. It cut through them like they were butter. I love to cut up vegetables now!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Great Craftsmanship,Perfect for starting a set.
I had been using an inexpensive set of knives, received as a wedding gift for many years. This 3 piece set of Henckel Pro-S knives finally replaced them. My excitement over finally having such high qualities knives was great. Because the cheap knives did not hold an edge I had usually kept only the 8" chef's and the steak knives sharp. When I tried the Henckel Pro-S 8'inch chef's knife for the first time it was perfect. I had done every thing with a blade of the same size and similar shape for so long It was familiar in my hand. The knive was not only familiar it was wonderful due to its sharpness, superior materials, balance and craftsmanship. The degree of sharpness is remarkable, and these knives demand a great amount of respect in order to insure safety. The two other Henckel Pro-S knives in this set are equally perfect for their tasks. I have gotten used to having sharps knives of wonderfully great craftsmanship and wish to never go back. Because these knives are of such high quality, I feel confident that they are a life time investment. If one is wishing to start a new set of knives or to begin replacing a current one, this set is a perfect starter. For most cooking tasks this three piece set could stand alone. ... Read more

The 8-inch blade on this knife features a curved cutting edge and a blunt back; chopping, dicing, and mincing duties are simplified--and made safer--by utilizing a quick rocking motion on the cutting edge. Part of the popular Four Star series, the hand-honed blade is made with Henckels's Sintermetal Component Technology (SCT), which allows three different grades of steel to be combined to form a single piece, fusing together the blade, bolster, and tang. What does this mean in layman's terms? A strong, high-quality knife that will last a lifetime.

Founded in 1731, the J.A. Henckels company is not only one of the world's oldest cutlery manufacturers, it's also one of the most well respected, creating bestselling knives guaranteed to last a lifetime. --Kim Harwell ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I cook for a living...
I gotta tell ya...this has been the best "out of the box" knife that I have used in a long time and I have purchased and used every FORGED 8 inch chef's knife from every line of every manufacturer listed here on Amazon. The factory edge was perfectly honed and sharp as a razor right from the get go. Usually I have to use a sharpening steel for a few strokes to reclaim the edge but not this one. Maybe I got lucky but I do love it dearly.
The 4 Star line has been around since 1976 and Henckels knows that we "Pros" love it for it's low maintenance, ease in sharpening, comfortable grip, sanitary design AND price. The blade is classic German in shape, a long, round curve for perfect rockin' and a good weight for heavier work (although in the mid to late '90s they went to a French shape and weight for some reason). This 4 Star can't be beat for dollar value.
This is my 5th one purchased in the last 23 years...the previous ones were all "stolen" by line cooks on the job...'nuf said.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is simply no better line of cutlery on the market.
I've been using my Henckel's chef's knife for many years now, and I continue to be impressed with it at every use. The size, weight and balance make it comfortable to use, even for larger "projects" that might cause your hand or arm to get tired with a lesser product. Even after countless uses, the edge remains super sharp, requiring only rare application of the sharpening steel. I found this out the hard way a few days ago with a careless slip of the hand... The heavy duty stainless steel has stood up perfectly to umpteen-bazillion trips through the dishwasher, without the tiniest hint of rust or discoloration.

In short, this is truly a professional quality knife, as is every item in the Four Star, Five Star and Pro-S lines. Yeah, this puppy costs $80 or more, but it's definitely a worthy investment. You really do get what you pay for! Just a word of caution -- stay away from the lower-end Henckel's International line, which is much cheaper but not of comparable quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this knife!
I love to cook, and I've spent a lot of money on cookware. For some reason, however, I continued to buy cheap knives. I guess I always felt that the actualy cookware I was using was so important, that I didn't really understand how having such a good knife would improve things.

Then I got this knife as a gift from a friend who comes over for my cooking a lot. I couldn't believe what I'd been missing! The weight of the knife, combined with such an incredible blade makes 'slicing and dicing' one of the best parts of cooking! This blade has taken everything I've thrown at it effortlessy. I bought a Henkle sharpener to go with it, but it holds its edge so well I don't sharpen it too often.

This kinfe also looks great. Plus, with Henckel quality, you know this will last almost forever.

Pros:
-Holds an edge very, very well
-Solid and heavy - makes chopping so easy
-Well balanced - feels great in your had
-Henkel quality

Cons:
-I only have one! (seriously, I don't have a real con).

5-0 out of 5 stars First time "good knife" buyer..and Im impressed.
Bought this just to try out the style and brand of knife to compare it to usual store bought, "comes in a big set" knifes. First impression, very impressed. Solid built, cuts everything like it was melted butter. I will definately keep this brand on my wish list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good everyday knives
I got these knives 2 years ago and still have yet to sharpen them. They work great for every little thing I have to cut. The red knife is great for slicing through muffins or small loaves of bread, my husband likes it for cutting sandwiches. The little blue knife is great for peeling potatoes or apples and the other two do all kinds of various cuttings. I would definitely buy them again or give them as gifts. I also like the colored handles not only for the colors sake but they are easy to remember which knife is which when the handle is the only thing poking out of the cup I have them standing in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift idea!
I bought my married-with-kids sister a set of these colorful knives, and she absolutely loves them. She even bought sets for their vacation homes on the coast! They're inexpensive and are great for gift giving.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK, but don't expect too much!
I bought these knives on a special. I got what I paid for. I would have given 2 1/2 stars if that was an option. If you have more than one person cooking at the same time, it is nice to be able to grab a knife for some quick work rather than doing time share. However, these don't hold a candle to the real deal. Oh, they are colorful :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty and Pretty useful
I bought my first set of these as individual knives in a little shop in Salzburg a few years ago. I have wanted more ever since. The twingrip series is our favorite series of Henckels knives. This set is pretty, and they're always dirty, because we use at least one of them in preparing nearly every meal! I am ordering several sets -- for me and for gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely comfortable and useful set of knifes
I found this set of knifes to be both extremely comfortable and quite useful in and out of the kitchen. They appear to be ergonomically designed for comfort and fit (with excellent tactile feel), and they do not slip when paring or peeling wet fruit or vegetables. Plus their colors make them easy to locate as well. I am buying another set for our neighbors. ... Read more

Because their edges are straight and not serrated, the four4-1/2-inch steak knives in this set slice through meat fibers insteadof tearing them, dividing steaks, chops, and roasts into neat bite-sizepieces. 3-0 out of 5 stars excellent value
With a limited budget, I found this set to be an excellent value to start with compared to other imported brands.
In the future, I hope to purchase a top quality JA Henckels knife set as this company comes well recommended by industry chefs and professionals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Henckles knives
I purchased the 13piece cutlery and have been dis-satified with the product due to their claim it doesnt need to be sharpened and they dont rust. The amount of money I spent for these supposed great knives is a real turn off on buying this product again. I cannot even find out who to contact to get them replaced or get my money back. Not happy!

1-0 out of 5 stars poor quality knife block
This set should be rated for Danger----The knife block is not counter balanced, simply nudging the handles of the knives, cause the block to tip forward and spill the knives out! Also the slots for the steak knives are not set wide enough apart; subsequently the six knives cannot fit into the block at once. You would think that spending almost 100 dollars for a knife set would afford a decent block. Also I don't like the strange serrated edge on the Chef's knife-disconcerting when you are chopping with it that the blade grabs onto the cutting board, causing awkward movements.
I am very disappointed and will be returning it for a refund.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent set at reasonable price
I have been putting together a kitchen from scratch. This means that dollars are short at the same time that so many things are needed. I am pleased to say that there is/was no need to miss out on a fine knife set. In fact, while I have always valued having good knives easily available, since buying this set I have discovered that they can be an anchor for quickly pulling together a kitchen. These knives stay sharp and take care of every task. They feel comfortable in the hand. The only knife I've bought since is a cleaver to ease the preperation of asian dishes, and that was not essential. This set is a must have if you're starting from scratch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must in the kitchen!
I especially liked this product because of it's many slots. It is the biggest block, it's nice and heavy and it allows you to purchase individual knives as opposed to a packaged set. Now when I buy another knife I can slide it in it's slot, not in a drawer somewhere. Hope this helps you buy this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
I just received this block, which is beautifully crafted and has the amount of slots that I need (although some might say that you only need 3 knives, I can't help myself). The one drawback of this block is that my slightly larger that 2 inch wide Chef's knife does not fit in any of the 3 chef knife slots. All 3 slots are 2 inches wide. I have a cleaver, so couldn't use that slot for this knife. Fortunately I realized that I could enlarge one of the slots to fit the knife. I used a thin handsaw and a wood file. After 10 minutes I was able to easily fit the Chef knife.
But I see from another review that I am not the only person who has this issue. I would think that if you are designing a 22 knife block it is for a person with a wide assortment, and you should include a few larger slots. But after my slight adjustment I'm very happy with the block.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Block for storing Knives
It is good, it is heavy, it fits well on the kitchen counter. My only concern for this block was the number of steak knives it could handle. (Not enough) otherwise it is an excellent kitchen block and I highly recommend it.

A good purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Study, Attractive, and Holds Nearly Knife in the House
I am thrilled with the quality of this product. Of course, with a Henkel product, I would expect nothing less and they don't disappoint.

The block is well weighted so it will stay put. It is sturdy, yet attractive.

The only downside is the width of some of the slots. I have a 12" Chef knife (which I am hoping to replace with a Henkel 12" Chef). It was too wide to fit in any slot but the one for the clever. I am hoping that a 12" Henkel Chef will fit in one of the smaller slots as I do want the block to hold both the 12" chef & a cleaver.

The 7" Santoku Knife, a 8" Chef and a bread knife slide into any of the medium sized slots easily.

Quickly reduce a cooked chicken or duck to bite-size pieces with this instrument. Or use it to butcher any kind of meat or poultry. It's heavy, the way a cleaver should be, so it does the work for you. The blade has a hole in its top corner so it may be hung on a hook or peg. Henckels' International Classic is a moderately priced cutlery line made in countries other than the company's home of Germany. The steel is of lesser quality than that used in its premier lines. Also, the handles are narrower and shallower--a feature those with small hands might appreciate. While this cleaver is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Value and Henckel Quality, u can't go wrong.
I've been looking around for a Cleaver for a while. I always knew I needed one. I am a big fans of DIY around the house. I've gathered lots of tools over time and realized in the importance of having the right too for the right job.

Back to the topic, a cleaver is definitely a tool needed for the kitchen, so I picked up this cleaver from the local mall.

I've cut through bones from ribs, steak, etc. Slicing through anything is like hot knife on butter.

The biggest challenge I've had with them is to cut open a coconut. I've witnessed my co-worker breaking his cheap cleaver while opening a coconut. I didn't want to ruin my knief at first but I thought the best test would be to find out how tough this Henckel was.

Minutes later, the coconut cracked open after few slices.

What a value! 5 out of 5!

FYI, I considered the Wusthof Grand Prix, it felt heavier but the price tag is also 3 times as much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous cleaver
You can cut meat, bones, and vegetables with this one knife. I rarely use my other knives anymore. I love this knife. It's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE KINDEST CUT
The Henckels is so sharp and the cut it makes so clean, the surgeons had the minimum difficulty in reattaching my fingers.

Two thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always wanted a meat cleaver.
I am a beginning cook. I have always marveled at the guys in the local shops whacking at the chicken, etc with a meat cleaver. I think I bought the thing for reasons of machismo alone. But, how easy it makes preparing meat and foul. It feels like an appropriate weight to my male hands. A couple of cuts and my chicken is dispatched. The knife looks well-made but it lacks the bolster of high-end Henckels. Unless you are cleaving whale or walrus, I doubt it matters.

Amazon.com Review

High-quality knives need tender loving care, which is why the most recognized name in knives, J.A. Henckels, makes a case for storing and transporting the cutlery tools of the trade. And this black vinyl carrying case is so slick, you might want it for a handbag. Two silver, briefcase-like locks secure it; there's a luggage tag for identification and a strong handle for easy carrying. Inside, canvas pockets hold up to 16 knives or other must-have tools in place. It measures 20-1/2 inches long (to fit the lengthiest French knife and steel), 8 inches high, and 3 inches deep. There's also one long zippered pocket on the exterior for storing slim items, such as shopping lists for the gourmet on the go. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars nothing but the best for my babies
I've had my knife case for almost 12 years now, and it still keeps up with the abuse that comes with my profession as a chef. It was given to me by the knife sharpening guy as a thank you gift for the business, i had given him. Day in night out, it has been reliable, and worn well (even though it looks as good now as it did then)This case keeps my babies, (yes i said babies) save and sound, everyone has become accustomed to seeing me with my knife bag, where i go, they go, and even though i've had my henckel 4 stars for much longer, the case still gives them the ohhhs and awwes, from being protected. This is a must for the serious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the fisherman, hunter, hobbyist or chef!
My daughter purchased the knife case for my birthday. I am an avid saltwater fisherman and, as such, need an assortment of knives, cleaning tools, and sharpening steels. I have many different shapes and sizes. This case is absolutely the best. It is designed wisely and is constructed very well. I thoroughly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Henckels 16-Slot Knife Case with Lock
I have owned my knife case for a couple of months now and I would never recomend this case to anyone. In the time that I have owned it, the case has lost a latch to open it, the stitching holding the case together is coming apart, the webbing holding the knives down is loose, allowing the knives to rub one another, and the devider seperating the kniives hase ripped. I am currently looking for a replacement for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars SAFETY FIRST!!! at Home
I stored all my sharp knives in this knife case, in fact, I have three cases stored safely in my higher kitchen cabinet. If you have kids at home, you wanna keep all you sharp knives away from them. There's no other way safer and neater in storing your knives. I also liked its portability. I bring a set of knives when visiting a friend for a cook-out dinner or lunch. It's a great way to show your "pro" like way of handling knives. This is a must for any household with kids. ... Read more

Many chefs are choosing the santoku over the chef’s knife as their primary chopping knife. Traditionally used by Japanese chefs, the santoku chops and slices with a straight rather than a rocking motion and offers the benefits of a cleaver with the manageability of a lighter knife. As part of Henckels’s Gourmet series of knives, this santoku has a stamped, high-carbon stainless-steel blade that islaser-sharpened for a longer-lasting edge and put through the Friodur ice-hardening process for additional strength. From blade tip to tang, the knife is composed of a single piece of metal for sturdiness and is tightly secured to the hygienic polypropylene handle with three rivets. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Knife, great price
I have been using a typical chef's nice since starting my career in the kitchen and have an AMAZING case of carpal tunnel sydrome/ RSI as a result. I was recommended a Santoku knife as a change and the difference is UNBELIEVEABLE.
Yes, you cannot "rock" with a Santoku or break bones, but a cleaver comes in handy for bones and I could NEVER get the razor-thin slices I can get with this nice little baby!
I have never been a fan of rocking and have taught all my fellow chefs to do what feels right for them ... and they do not rock their knives, either ... and if any handles crack, that is why Henckels guarantees EVERYTHING for life (www.zwilling.coM for an FYI if you read the review about me where he said he only uses it for back up now that he has a cracked handle).
I would highly recommend this knife ... the divots in the Wustof are nice, but jusdt a fancy addictive ... that is what a bench/dough scraper if for.
Buy this knife and you will be ecstatic ... I am going to buy them as gifts for everyone I know for thei b-days this year!

2-0 out of 5 stars Handle is in pieces
Henkles, Wusthoff ect all have different ranges of knives ranging from so-so to excellent. Well these are the so-so ones. If you are a weekend cook, these would be fine but if your in the kitchen daily and want a quality knife that you would use often for many types of food, get a better high-carbon, FORGED one from any company.

I have this exact model and after less than a year of hand washing, I noticed a crack in the handle. Now it's almost falling off. I only use it as a back-up.

It's too light for harder foods like carrots and requires a lot more effort to cut anything requiring force to cut. Even after it's sharpened I find it awkward chopping larger, harder foods. It just doesn't have the weight, even if it was a chef's knife which is honestly probably more of the functions I use it for. It's about the same weight as a cheaper bread knife. For the types of cuts this knife is supposed to be designed for, it's just too light to be effective. It's just too hard (and too dangerous) to make good chopping cuts with such a light knife.

Spend the extra $5-$10 to get a forged knife from any company, Henkels or not.

4-0 out of 5 stars good all purpose kitchen knife
This knife is great, it's light weight, sharp, and it has all the good things you expect from a Henckels knife. It's also affordable for household kitchens.

it's easier to handle than a cleaver, which was what i used before this (I am from a Chinese family, we use cleavers for everything), but I do have one gripe, the blade is not big like a cleaver, so when i am slicing carrots into thin strings, sometimes my knuckles run into the cutting board. it will take some getting used to. ... This set represents a revelation for any cook with a drawer full of stained, blunt knives. Nearly every basic kitchen-cutlery need is satisfied in one package compact enough to place on the counter within reach. The set includes an 8-inch, workhorse chef's knife, an 8-inch bread knife, a 5-inch utility knife, a 5-inch boning knife, and a 3-inch paring knife for peeling and cleaning vegetables and fruits. The 9-inch sharpening steel keeps their edges in order. Everything fits into the rubber-footed, solid block. The block has a slot for kitchen shears below the block's face. International Fine Edge is an inexpensive cutlery line made in countries other than Henckels's home of Germany. The knives don't have bolsters and the steel is of lesser quality than Henckels's premier lines--the blades are less strong. Knives are dishwasher-safe, but it's not recommended. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST KNIVES FOR THE CABBAGE
I GAVE THESE KNIVES 5 STARS, BECAUSE FOR THE MONEY I DON'T
THINK YOU CAN FIND A BETTER SET OF KNIVES. YES THEY GET DULL,
BUT ALL KNIVES GET DULL THATS WHY HENCKEL INCLUDES A SHARPENING
STEEL. USE IT, DON'T BE AFRAID OF IT. IN MY OPINION IT'S BETTER
TO BUY A LOW END PRODUCT FROM A RESPECTED COMPANY, THAN TO BUY
A HIGH END PRODUCT FROM SAY, BRAND-X. THE BOTTOM LINE IS DO YOU REALLY WANT TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON A SET OF KNIVES THAT ARE SO [COSTLY] THAT YOU ARE AFRAID TO USE THEM. GET THESE KNIVES, YOU WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fines of home kitchen knives
My experience with these knives lies between the two previous reviewers. While I will agree that this set features slightly lighter blades, it's a great starter kit for a competant cook in his or her home kitchen. If you work in a professional climate, you're going to want a heaver cooking knife -- but at home they work very well. Nice and sharp out of the box, and let's face it, we all need to use the steel on the blade more often than we think. A great value, especially here at Amazon where the discount is nice and steep.

1-0 out of 5 stars These are chinese made garbage
The price is cheap because they are made without quality or durability .

1-0 out of 5 stars Calphalon so much better
I used to use Henckel knifes. But I bought a set of Calphalon fine knifes and I was stunned at the impressive quality of the Calphalon set. Sharper, better grips, and better value, the new Calphalon system is a great idea.

Walk away from the over priced German line of knifes and go with Calphalon (available on Amazon.com).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners...
But if you want great knives avoid these and spend this much money on one good chef's knife. You probably won't use the other knives much anyway, except for the bread knife. Look for a carbon steel blade, these stainless steel knives will always look pretty but they'll never really be sharp. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This knife is marvelous!
I bake bread on the average of three times a week. With my old bread knife I could never slice the bread while it was still hot because it would just mash it down and the dough would stick from crust-to-crust. This baby slices right through the bread hot out of the machine like a hot knife through butter. With this knife you can slice the bread as thin as you like and you will have beautiful, even slices at a terrific price!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must if you bake your own bread
This knife is very sharp and has a comfortable grip. It is well balanced and feels solid and substantial but not too heavy. I received my Pro 8-Inch Bread knife as a gift with a block set, out of all 12 knifes in this set this is my favorite one. It goes through a freshly baked loaf of bread without any effort, no squeezing or crumbs. My knife is made in Tailand out of shiny stainless steel (not that high carbon steel that is impossible to sharpen) and it doesn't require sharpening. I wash it in a dishwasher and it seems to do fine. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap price, not a cheap knife
I have been wanting a Henckel bread knife for some time, and even had it on my Christmas list, but no one took the hint. When I came across this one for $9.99 at Amazon I was very skeptical, but after reading the other reviews I decided to order it. When it arrived I immediately opened the box to check it out. I found it to be a good size, feels good in my hand, is very well weighted, and after washing and drying it, put it to the test. I sliced into a tomato, and it worked beautifully----I can make very thin slices without smushing. Then, I peeled and sliced a grapefruit with it---lovely. I still haven't used it on bread, but will as soon as I have time to make some crusty peasant herb bread or a loaf of focaccia. I have made a gazillion purchases from Amazon, everything from books to phones, toys, cutting boards, flatware, videos, yoga mats, all kinds of goodies, but have never felt compeled to write a review until now. That should tell you how much I love this knife. I did not give it five stars only because I assume the German made version must be superior---but then look at the cost. This is one of my happier purchases from Amazon. If you would like a great bread knife to use on bread, slice sandwiches, tomatoes, fruit, etc., get this one. For ten bucks it's a steal. And if you should see bread knife on someone's wish list, give them this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's a bread knife and it works...that's all
no complaints, no praises...other than it cuts bread. When I shopped, this seemed like the best priced bread knife. It works perfectly, but if there's cheaper out there...unless you're set on the looks of this one, get the cheaper one. They're bread knives - they have to be very good to do what they're supposed to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please pass the bread
Works like a charm for cutting. I recievea breadmaker sometime back, and loved it. But when I would use a regular knife to divy out pieces, the bread would end up smooshed. My only gripe is that it rusted after about 6 washings. It cost so little, and it still works, so it is small complaint. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The Japanese version of the chef’s knife, the santoku is useful for straight chopping, mincing, and slicing of larger quantities of vegetables and meat. Cooks with smaller hands may prefer this 7-inch blade as the shorter length offers better control while cutting. The width also provides a great platform for transporting chopped vegetables from cutting board to sauté pan.

Part of the Four Star series of cutlery, this santoku has a fully forged high-carbon stainless-steel blade. The blade, bolster, and tang are welded of one piece of metal using Henckels’s Sinter Metal Component Technology, which distributes the right quantities of metal to each part of the knife. The result is a longer-lasting edge and a more consistent angle on the blade. The blade has also undergone Henckels’s Friodur ice-hardening process, which further strengthens it and protects it from discoloration. The black polypropelene handles offer a secure and comfortable grip and are hygienically attached so there are no gaps between the handle and blade for food to become trapped. This santoku should be hand washed and is covered by a lifetime warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Quality Balance and Steel
After spending 6 years as a sous chef and using a variety of knifes, I can asure you that this knife is top notch! The Santoku is the knife of choice for vegetable prep because it is so well balanced for "rocking" and "chopping." For those that grip with your pointing finger onto the blade, the shape of the handle is far better than the 5 star series. The cryogentically cured steel stays sharp for months. In the four years that I've used this knife I have never used anything but a worn steel to sharpen the blade. A "must have" for the serious home cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice backup to 8"chef's knife
Now that I have the kids helping me cook dinner/chop vegetables etc. I needed another "chef" knife. Rather than duplicate the chef's knife, I got this one and am very pleased. It's narrower blade makes slicing easier, the curve of the blade has a nice rocker motion to it. I think of the two styles I prefer the French Chef's over this one but as a second knife this one is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the Four Star collection
Purchased this knife to complete my knife collection. I'm not a serious (or even a great) cook but I love Henckels Four Star knives and have used them for over 20 years. This knife (as well as the others in the Four Star Collection) is well balanced and very sharp. It makes me want to take cooking lessons so my meager skills can match the knife's potential. My efforts in the kitchen may not taste gourmet but I feel like a chef with this knife in my hand. Marian

5-0 out of 5 stars I cook for a livin'...
A BARGAIN!!! Why is this blade so much cheaper than others when it is equal in quality and superior in grip? Buy this one and you won't be disappointed.
I've used this model and I sell a lot of these to other chefs and cooks...I love it, they love it...'nuf said.

It claims a 5 mojo*z in my bag!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Knife
This is a surprizingly great knife. More accurate slicer than the chief's knife, it is also great for dicing. You can hold the knife by it's spine and rock the knife over onions and peppers to get really nice small dice. I obtained a leap improvement to my Salsa's texture after using this knife to prepare it. Definately like this knife for veggie slicing and dicing a lot. ... Read more

The 6-inch blade on this knife features a curved cutting edge and a blunt back; chopping, dicing, and mincing duties are simplified--and made safer--by utilizing a quick rocking motion on the cutting edge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly fine knife
We got one as a wedding present ten years ago. The quality is superb. With a twice-a-year honing, this knife remains incredibly sharp, is well balanced in your hand, and slices with ease even the toughest meats. With careful handling, the blade and handle have not worn at all, and will probably outlive me. One caveat for those who do not have high-carbon steel knives: they do require more care (ex. don't put in dishwasher, don't let blade touch other metal, don't use crude electric sharpener). Don't let the babysitter try to pry-off bottle caps (sadly, the matching 3" paring knife met its end this way). If you appreciate fine quality in this age of throw-away, this is a knife one could be happy with forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Knife!
This knife was recommended to me by a retired chef/friend. I hated to spend the money on it but I went ahead and splurged. It is truly fabulous and I could chop all day with it. It makes me feel like a true chef when I'm using it. Watch those fingers! It would also be a great weapon if needed.

After having struggled with a number of lesser quality knifes in the kitchen, I am happy to have invested in this Henckels product. The weight and balance is just perfect, cleaning is a breeze and you cannot fault its sharpness. Its relatively small size could be a hassle for handling those bigger items, though, so make sure you have an alternate tool for those jobs. ... Read more

The heavy, stable block has rubber feet and is made of wood with a black granite-like finish. It measures 10-1/4 inches high, 4-1/2 inches wide, and 12 inches deep.
