Quiet at first, but loud after one year
I have the HT30RC verstion of this fan, which is the same thing, but with a remote control. When I first got the fan, it was very quiet and worked well in my bedroom. However, after only having the fan for one year, the motor starts making this knocking noise every time the fan is on for longer then 30 minutes or so... The noise is loud enough to disturb my sleep.
Further, I tried looking up the fan on Holmes website, but they've already pulled all support for the fan. It's like it never existed.
Your mileage may vary, but I feel I deserved to use the fan for longer than a year before started acting up, especially considering the price I paid for it.

***Update*** Two days after writing this article, I tried taking the fan apart to fix it. A little WD-40 at the motor spindle and everything is as good as new. This would probably raise my rating to a four... I think Holmes should at least still list the fan on their website!

I just purchased this fan....
I just purchased this fan. My main reason was the Holmes name and the fact it took up little space. It's hard to find a standing fan that doesn't have a large round base.

Anyway, I like the fan so far...I am running it on high to get enough power out of it. But, it's pretty quiet and safe from little kid fingers which is a big plus.

Searching for my 3rd "Tower Fan" - replacement...
OK - I am on the hunt to replace my 2nd tower fan which has just died, like it's predecessor. The first tower fan I purchased was the costly "Bionaire", w/remote etc... not on sale, I paid about $85. This Bionaire fan just stopped one day, it was only 6 months old. The warranty, (15 years - wow!) is way more trouble than it's worth and entails further layout of cash - so it's basically "useless".

Second Tower Fan I bought for $39 - made by "Seville", & not as many features but that's ok since I didn't use them on the previous model anyway. This fan lasted 1.5 years, and at least gave me a warning by stopping one day, but starting up again a minute later, this was about two weeks before blowing it's final breeze. In comparison to the first based on the cost to life ratio, this fan was much better, but neither lived as long as expected...

Now I will try this fan and see how long it lasts - but it appears these tower fans generally don't have a long "life expectancy". Given that, don't spend too much on one of these - since they are all made in china and PROBABLY by the same company anyway.

Great fan with nice options
... I recently bought one and like it a lot. The fan has many nice features for such a small price... It has a remote control that allows one to use all features via remote -- that includes on/off, fan speed, oscillation, timer and a special feature that automatically changes the fan speed if you want a more natural air-flow feeling. I feel the fan has a lot of blowing power even on the lowest speed. The compact design makes integrating it into any room a cinch. I will definitely buy more of these fans to have throughout my house.

Weak! Stopped working!
Plain and simple: buying this fan was a waste of money. The circulation was really weak unless you had it on the highest setting and less than ONE FOOT away from you. What made matters worse was that one day, it just stopped working. A couple days later, it just came on again on its own - only to stop working AGAIN a few days after that. Cleaning Suggestion
I dont have this model, but I have a larger Holmes Air purifier, and agree with the other reviews - they get themselves very dirty very quickly. I have found though, that if you put the front cover (the part hardest to clean) in the dishwasher & run it on a light cycle, it comes out perfect. Wiping the rest down with a cleaning cloth does the job as well. I wouldn't recommending buying a Holmes product, btu if you already have one, hopefully this cleaning tip will help.

Cleans, but too bad not itself as well..
It's affordable, does what it's supposed to (clean the air) but in the process gets itself filthy. It's almost impossible to clean, so unless you don't care about having a dirty appliance in the middle of your room all the time, I would suggest finding an easier to clean model. Also, the filter seems to get glogged up pretty fast.. maybe I just live in super dusty conditions or something, but plan on spending just as much on filters every 3-6 months as on the unit itself.

there are 2 major things wrong with this (and every?) holmes product i have been 'duped' into using. it is much like when you buy a printer, the initial unit is a mere downpayment for all the cartridges you'll need if you use it 'normally.' the holmes air purifiers i have been intermittently stuck with do help clean the air and thanks to the standardization of the hepa filter (and no thanks to holmes), work fairly well. the downside is they are extremely difficult to clean (i think i used an entire package of qtips) and you have to take the damned thing apart yourself to do so (hence i cleaned mine once and dumped it) if you like cleanliness, after using it a few months, once you look inside the thing you'll be prompted to do likewise. the reason it's popular seems attributable to one factor: it is cheap. seems like a good idea at the time. then u start buying the filters (approx $15 or more each) and attempting to maintain it and realize what a poorly thought out piece o' junk the actual unit really is. be smart, spend more and get an air cleaner from a company that cares whether or not the unit can be cleane (slantfin, bionaire, honeywell). hope this helps save others from a dirty business. ... Not effective.
Unit is brand new.

Good features: Larger water tank, warm mist, water filter, water tank handle, 2 speeds, easier to clean, price.

Problems: Too many instructions to complete minimal tasks; not good humidity coverage; noisy even at low speeds; won't reset; poor website support.

Other cheaper units have been better (Vicks, Reli-On, etc)

Powerful, but makes a lot of noise.
This is a nice fan, the sleep function is great, but it is really really noisy! The "low" setting seems to be a fast as the "high" setting on most fans. I am almost afraid to turn it higher then "low" because of how much air/wind is created.

This is a very powerful fan. I guess it is "quiet" when you take into account how much air is created, but that is all relative. There's a style of fan that's in a lot of old movies; they're in newspaper offices, on the desks of private eyes, and in sweltering police stations. The Holmes HANF13R laBrezza table looks like that fan, only dolled up to modern standards. It stands about a foot and a half high on a heavy metal base, and its four-fin blade rotates in a kind of wire cage. The blades are made of a soft, charcoal-gray polymer, so that they're safe even if accidentally touched while the fan's being used. The base and fan housing are made of a durable cast-aluminum alloy with a dim silver finish, and the wire cage protecting the fan blade is high-polished chrome.

It helps
I'd actually rate this 3-1/2 stars, but rounded it up to four. I bought one of these for when my chain-smoking mother came to visit. It doesn't suck all the smoke out of the way, but when she kept her cigarettes nearby or resting on the ashtray, it did hoover up the smoke trails. The 'smoking' room still smelled, mainly from her exhaling puffs of smoke, but after she left it didn't take quite as long to air our place out.
