Hoover has pretty much thought of everything with this versatile, 12-amp vacuum cleaner that comes fully assembled and is ready to use right out of the box. There's no need to wait until everyone is out of the house to clean anymore--the Hoover EmPower upright features a Hush mode for quiet cleaning anytime. Hard-to-clean messes quickly vanish with the to the Power Boost feature, while pollens and allergens are removed by the allergen filtration system and the long-lasting Teflon-coated HEPA filter. Instead of disposable bags, the system uses a dirt cup, which is see-through, so it's easy to tell when it needs to be emptied. The cleaner is easy to lift due to a convenient carrying handle, and for transporting, just put the handle in the upright position, tilt the cleaner back on the rear wheels, and push forward.

Several on-board tools are available for time-saving, efficient cleaning. The dusting brush is perfect for items like carved furniture, tabletops, books, lamps, lighting fixtures, Venetian blinds, baseboards, shutters, and registers. The furniture nozzle works great for upholstered furniture, draperies, mattresses, clothing, automobile interiors, and carpeted stairs. The crevice wand, which stores inside the extension wand, helps with hard-to-reach spaces like corners or along edges in places like dresser drawers, upholstered furniture, stairs, and baseboards. It can also be used for extra reach with the dusting brush and/or extension wand. The extension wand gives extra length to the hose and can be used with any of the above tools. There's also a powered hand tool that makes carpeted stairs and upholstery easier to clean.

The vacuum's handle has three positions: upright when using the various cleaning tools; operating position for general cleaning of carpet and floors; and low for reaching under furniture like sofas or beds--just step on the handle-release pedal to lower or raise the handle. For easy storage, the upper handle folds down making the vacuum more compact; just press the upper-handle release button and fold the handle down into the storage position. To return the handle to its working position, simply raise it into its upright position until it locks into place.

Other features include a headlight for better visibility, a 15-inch-wide cleaning path, and five height-adjustment settings for easily moving from a throw rug to bare floors. Where there's smoke...
A previous reviewer was disappointed over the Empower's "Hush" mode. I was actually impressed with this feature, as I was with the unit's power. However, this vacuum is TOO strong. I owned this Hoover for about a week, and each day it would seize a piece of the rug (I made sure to remove loose string) and wrap it around the brush. Then you'd smell smoke; it would permeate the entire house. The last day was the worst. I brought it back and got a canister (a Kenmore Progressive, top-rated by Consumer Reports), that turns off automatically in these situations. It's excellent!

What a Disappointment!
I bought this vacuum cleaner specifically for the "hush" mode. I have an 8 month old who is afraid of the vacuum cleaner noise. I wasn't expecting it to be silent, but I was hoping for a noticeable difference. What a disappointment! There was barely any difference between the regular mode and hush. Disappointing
False advertising. It is only 15'-16' *fully* stretched and is only a "20' reach with wands and crevice tool" according to the tiny print on the bottom box. This is not an extension but fits as a replacement, so you are only getting 9'-10' more reach than the original 6' hose. That is still helpful, altho the quality of the tubing is 1/2 that of the original hose and will not sustain pulling or pinching with the same durability.

20'Hose DOES NOT FIT HEPA Hoovers!!!
The information on the pages that pertain to this hose needs to be changed to reflect the fact that the hose DOES NOT fit Hoovers with a HEPA system. It only fits Hoovers with product #'s beginning U53.., U54.., U64.. I ordered it along with a new Windtunnel that has a Hepa system, since the product information stated that these 2 items were bought together by other people. Unfortunately, it does not state that these people (now including me) have to return the hose because it does not fit all Windtunnels. So be sure to check and doublecheck before you buy. ...

insufficient information in product information
Upon opening the box I found that the information given in the buying information for this product did not reflect the actural product. For one thing it only fits unright WindTunnel models that use bags. This hose is for models beginning with U53, U54 and U64 only.

WAY OVERPRICED ITEM
Absolutely RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED ... get a grip! Whoever would buy this item at this price and the extraordinary OVERPRICED SHIPPING doesn't know how to shop!

A little pricey but convenient
The reviewer who complained so about the price could find these at her local ... chain store. These are standard bags available everywhere. Amazon is nice because you don't have to leave the house. For some an extra [bit of money] is worth the convenience.

Highway robbery for a simple product
After shipping, this pack of 3 is right around the cost of buying it locally.P>There's nothing here worth 4 stars. The vacuum cleaner perhaps, but not the bags. It's a simple paper bag like any other; it's not rocket science. It's worth about $0.50 to manufacture, and they could make a profit at ($$$)/bag. This type of pricing is nothing other than highway robbery since they have us latched already. My next vacuum might be one of those bagless models.

If somebody wants to post something helpful, please let us know where if anywhere we can find these bags (inexpensive) from a third party.

Just what the doctor ordered.
Well, if you have allergies and need to cut down the ambient dust, these bags are purported to do just that. As a part of a total house hypoallergenic program, they seem to help. The price here is a bit cheaper than at my local retailer.

Ok, the bag fills up fast, but then that's because the system does such a terrific job. One bag lasted two weeks, but then the cleaner itself gives an indication when the area is still dirty, so you tend to be more careful in vacuuming.Bag replacement is a bit clumsy but no more so than most machines. I had no trouble removing the bag and not spilling its contents. Yes, you have to fold the top and bottom over when you install it but that's because it unfolds when it fills up. Expense? Excellent choice if you're looking for value and ease of use
What you'll like best about this Hoover vacuum is that it's light weight (approximately 8 pounds) gives it a tremendous advantage over traditional cannister vacuum cleaners. This is most noticed if you're using it on stairs or carrying it out to the garage to vacuum the car.

Other great features are the extra-long vacuum hose (6-feet), and the 18-foot electrical cord. Both of these add to the item's ease of use.

Changing the bag is very easy, and this unit uses the Type R Hoover bag, so you can do quite a bit of vacuuming between changes.

very unhappy
I'm very unhappy with this vacuum, for the following reasons:

1. Poor suction. I have cat hair on my rugs, and all it does is clump the cat hair up, so I have to pick it up by hand or by taking off the brush and putting the tube right over it. Also, it doesn't begin to get all the hair out of the rug.

2. It scratches my bare floors, even on the floor setting, plus it makes a loud scratching noise on those floors.

3. It is awkward and timeconsuming to take the brush off for areas where you want just the tube, like corners.

4. Seems very cheesy. Why do they use plastic in these things.

It is a complete waste of money. One use, and it is headed into the rubbish. I would return it, except I bought it quite awhile ago and just used it for the first time.

Not Easy to Find Bags for this Vacuum
The vacuum works but I can't find Type R bags for it at any stores where bags are sold, must have to be ordered special, which is not good.

Low suction
I was hoping this would be a good lightweight vac for around the house, but I wish now I would have paid twice the price and bought something better. It does OK with crumbs and such but is lacking the power to clean drapes or furniture. Hoover makes a commercial version of the Portapower that has a lot more power. It comes with a 30ft cord, stainless steel wands, and has a shoulder strap that makes cleaning furniture and drapes a breeze. You can use a cloth bag or the more low dust paper bag. If you're looking for something with just a little more power than a Dustbuster, the Portapower II is the one to get. Otherwise, go for the commercial model.

I love this vacuum very much. Itis versitile, lightweight, and easy to manage. I recomend a canister vacuum cleaner over an upright anyday. Allergen Filtration
We purchased these bags for the first time in May 2001. I installed a bag and thought it worked OK. (I did not throw the former bags, not Hoover bags, out.) The next time the bag needed changing the lady who cleans the house (unbeknown to us) installed the bag we had been using previously. My wife who is very sensitive to house dust recognized the difference. After a very short time my wife said she could smell the dust when the vacuum cleaner was in use. I changed the bag in our vacuum back to a Hoover bag and the probem was cured. While not very scientific, it convinced us. I have thrown the other bags away.
Additional Comment:
Because of the small particles that are trapped in the bag, I take the vacuum outside to remove the filled bag. This prevents these particles from escaping back into the air in the house. ... Read more
