Amazon.com Review

Beginning in the 1930s, two successive generations of busy cooks employed pressure cookers to prepare family meals. The next generation, freighted with memories of valves dancing and hissing on stovetops, then snubbed pressure cookers. Now pressure cookers have come back, those old valves replaced by modern versions that ensure safety while delivering the speed, ease, and nutritional benefits of pressure cooking.

This heavyweight, stainless-steel beauty is a fine example of contemporary engineering and style. Its mirror finish gleams, and its black handles, including a loop handle for two-handed lifting, stay cool. Pressure cooking traps steam to heat foods at temperatures higher than boiling. An aluminum disk in the base, sandwiched by stainless steel, speeds the process even more through fast heat conductivity. It's safe on electric, gas, ceramic, and induction stovetops. Little water is required, so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored from the steamer insert. Stews, soups, beans--even meat loaf, pork chops, and desserts such as bread pudding--come out tasty and nutritious. (A booklet containing dozens of recipes is included.) You can brown meats in the pot before the lid is locked on, or use the pot without the lid. The stem of the operating valve shows high and low pressure so you can adjust heat for different foods. After cooking, pressure can be reduced slowly (just let the cooker sit for a while), normally (press the pressure indicator), or quickly (run tepid water on the lid's rim).

Safety measures abound. The lid twists onto the pot; a rubber gasket ensures a tight seal. A vent releases steam if pressure builds too high, as does a valve that also locks the lid when any pressure whatsoever is inside the cooker. Cleanup is a bit involved: hand wash the pot, gasket, and lid with a mild detergent, then lightly oil the gasket. Normally the valve is self-cleaning, but if food passes through it, disassembly is required. Minor cleaning inconvenience, though, should not overshadow the major convenience of pressure cooking. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom under pressure
As a mom of two active boys I need my Duromatic pressure cooker almost every day. Especially after swimming they are starving and want real food fast! A standard dish is my 7 mintues risotto.I just throw in whatever I can find in the fridge or follow the great recipe provided in the cookbook "Quick Cuisine" that comes with the cooker. For all of you out there who are afraid of pressure cookers I have this to say: This unit is a high tech and safe as your computer! It's so easy to use even my husband can do it. Some of my favorit dishes: Beef stew, BBQ pot roast, beets, corn on the cob (no boiling 10 gallons of water) potatos for mashed or salad, whole chicken in 20 minutes! Well you just have to try it out. This cooker is the best--my kids will tell you so.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best pressure cooker I have used so far
I've gone through 4 or 5 pressure cookers in the last 10 years, and I think I've finally found one I like. I work full time (40-60 hours a week), and I like to cook, so the time saved by pressure cooking is important to me. I use the pressure cooker mostly for meat, potatoes, beans and lentils. Typically, meat cooks in about 1/3 the time it would take in a regular pot. Pressure cooked meat is very tender and flavorful, but you need some experience in matching the cooking time to the type of meat. You have to be careful not to overcook.

The construction and finish of this cooker are excellent. It is made of stainless steel, with a thick aluminum plate at the bottom to spread the heat. This is a useful feature. Typically, pressure cooking requires high heat initially to quickly build up steam pressure before you turn the heat down. That is when food can burn and stick to the bottom of the cooker. This cooker spreads heat very well. So long as you use the prescribed amount of water or other cooking liquid, this cooker will not burn food at the bottom.

There is a two-level steam pressure indicator on the lid. The cooker comes with two booklets containing recipes, and a very comprehensive list of recommended cooking times for all sorts of meats, poultry, vegetables, beans, etc. If you follow directions, the cooker does not whistle or otherwise make any objectionable sounds. I can barely hear it from 10 feet away. Of course, if you forget to turn down the heat after the cooker is up to full cooking pressure, it will release a loud burst of steam. This is a safety feature.

The cooker has a shield on top of the lid to direct any escaping steam downwards, so there is no danger of burning your hands.

Kuhn-Rikon recommends using nylon spatulas to maintain the mirror-like finish, but you'll find them sadly inadequate when, for example, browning meat. I use a heavy gauge steel Calphalon spatula and steel tongs. After several months, I can see minor scratch marks inside the cooker, but the outside is still bright and shiny! Anyway, cookware should be designed to take this kind of handling -- it is meant to be useful rather than decorative. Stainless steel is the best material to withstand normal levels of use and abuse, and this cooker handles it well.

Keep in mind that a pressure cooker can't be filled to the top when cooking. It should never be more than half or two-thirds full, so the 5 liter capacity translates to about 2.5-3.0 liters of usable capacity. If you cook large quantities, you might want to get a bigger model.

This is a relatively expensive cooker, but it is well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" in the Modern Kitchen
Remember Grandmom's pressure cooker with the rattling pressure control weight and all the associated hassle of using the thing? Well, all that's history. This cooker is a gem -- about as good as it gets in pressure valve technology, beautifully constructed, easy to use, and best of all, it turns out great meals in minutes.

We use ours to cook all kinds of stews, soups, casseroles -- you name it-- and they turn out just as good as the versions cooked for hours. Moroccan lamb stew, chicken cacciatore, braised lamb shanks, and many more recipes have all been delicious. And they all cook in 30 minutes or less -- yes, that's right -- half an hour. The prep time usually takes a preliminary half hour, so a great meal in 60 minutes with no fuss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything they said it is.
I deliberately went searching for a modern pressure cooker, partly because every Vegan cookbook that I own considers it a "must have". I also have fond memories of the delicious meals that my Mom and Grandmother cooked in years past, but the older styles scared me with their sputtering and pressure releases. I was always somewhat afraid I would end up with pot roast on my ceiling... The Kuhn Rikon 5-Liter Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker is a dream come true. The 5-Liter size is adequate for a small family or if cooking just for one or two people. It is easy to regulate the cooking pressure with the gauge on the top and the user guide is actually user-friendly! Pressure cooking foods is somewhat of an art, I believe, so it does take a little bit of getting used to if you are not familiar with using a pressure cooker. I, personally, have not owned one and so there is a bit of a learning curve. But the measurement and timing guides for different foods are comprehensive and very easily understandable. The foods I have cooked came out just as expected in much shorter amounts of time than regular cooking methods. Plus, I like the fact that nutrients are sealed in and foods retain their moisture. The stainless steel pot and cover clean up easily. The engineering and design are beautiful and I am totally happy with this cooker. It is a most welcome addition to my kitchen!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hasn't blown up yet
I bought this as a gift for my chef husband who begged for a year. He tempted me with stories of creamy risotto in minutes and broths that won't sit for hours and stink up the kitchen. He got it with the caveat that he would clean up any explosions. None yet, and I'm convinced now that there won't be any. Food is evenly cooked, fast, and has well developed flavors. This package comes with everything- CD, cookbook, pot. The only downside is the small size. If you're doing a lot of broths you might want to upgrade to the 7 liter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best presure cooker I have ever used!
I purchased the Kuhn Rikon 7-Liter Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker because I wanted to cook the meals my father (Hungarian) had made whilst I was a child. Namely, goulash... And gee, is this a lovely item! Sure, you need to regulate the heat, so did he (and his grandma). This one is _so_ much easier though....

With this model you don't have the steaming and the hissing, moisture leaving your dinner. This baby is so _very_ quiet.. I have made so many meals with this cooker, and my wife loves it. Regulating the temerature is easy, the two bars (high and low pressure) are so very easy to read. Just adjust the heat.

I had an electric stove top first, it was harder to use with a pressure cooker. Now I have gas, and easy easy....

Of course, I needed to cook more than goulash...Great value, more than yes! Quick cooking, good cooking. Do yourself a favour, this is a great buy...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pressure cooker!
I bought the Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker after the New York Times called it 'the Mercedes Benz among pressure cookers'. And even though I haven't tried any other cookers (so I can't compare) I am totally happy with it. I'm actually spoiled, I got two of these! I use them all the time! I usually make recipes out of the cookbooks 'Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure' and 'Complete Vegetarian Kitchen'. Both books are by Lorna Sass. She is an expert on pressure cooking and gives a lot of nice helpful pressure cooking recipes, tips and charts in these books.

If you want to buy a flame tamer for your cooker (highly recommended), please get the Kuhn Rikon one! It's a bit expensive, but the two other ones I tried ended up in the trash can.

I also recommend buying an 'Ohsawa Pot'. When you make rice straight in a pressure cooker it is very sticky and can get stuck to the bottom. With this pot (which you place in the pressure cooker), you get absolutely delicious rice (especially brown and wild rice turn out great!).

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this pressure cooker
It is every bit as good as they say it is. It's very easy to use. No jiggle, no hissing, just a little sound to let you know the pressure is coming up. Just two little red lines that are easy to see. 1st. line is for low pressure, 2nd. line is for high pressure. Not only does it work like a dream, it looks like one too. If all you have every owned is a jiggle pressure cooker, please give this one a try. I'm sure you will be impressed with this 2nd generation pc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
I recently purchased this pressure cooker and have found it to be extremely easy to use. I have never used a pressure cooker before. You will love this one. The size is perfect for most recipes. The instructions are clear and the book includes good recipes to get started. I am very impressed with the quality of this product and I am equally impressed with how quickly I was able to make delicious dinners. So far I have made pot roast, spaghetti sauce, turkey breast, risotto and chicken soup. Each recipe was easy to make--one would think I was cooking all day.
You will enjoy this pressure cooker! I ordered this on a Wednesday from Amazon and received it on Friday--what superb service!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the investment
This is the second pressure cooker that I've owned and I am extremely pleased with it's performance. If you have not used one in the past, it is well worth the investment of money and time to learn how to use it. I did a lot of searching before deciding on this model, mostly due to the inordinate number of positive reviews. I was not dissapointed. You can make wonderful meals quickly, easily, and for less money that with conventional cookware. The last cooker I had was an older style with a jiggle top. It worked, but was not convenient to use, so I did not use it very often. The Kuhn Rikon is so easy to use that I've been using is several times per week and plan most of my menus around the pressure cooker. I am already thinking about buying others in different sizes. I find the 7 liter a good size for most uses. It will easily accomodate soups and stock but is not too big to use for smaller meals. For the few people that have not had good experiences with pressure cookers, I urge them to try again. It is not hard to master and the rewards are well worth it. The Kuhn Rikon is easy to use, safe, and will quickly become the primary pot in your kitchen. If you are new to pressure cooking, it is worthwhile to buy a pressure cooker cookbook at the same time. I liked Pressure Cooking for Dummies by Tom Calamita. ... Read more

Splendid examples of why modern, safe pressure cookers arepopular with contemporary cooks, the 5-1/4-quart pressure cooker and2-1/8-quart pressure frying pan in this set quickly and healthfullycook foods with trapped steam at temperatures higher than boiling. Twolids, which fit both pans, are included--the pressure lid and a glasslid--so one pan can be used to cook under pressure while the other isused conventionally. Pressure-cooking requires little water so nutrients, flavor, and colorare not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored. Stews, soups, beans, even meat loaf and pork chops and desserts like bread puddingcome out tasty and nutritious. (A detailed instruction bookletcontaining dozens of recipes is included.) 5-0 out of 5 stars Kuhn Rikon 4 Piece Duromatic Pressure Cooker
Excellent set, easy to use and will last beyond its ten year guarantee. I use the pressure frypan to cook macrobiotic rice or oatmeal. After 50 minutes of high pressure cooking, I get perfect brown rice or oatmeal(no sticking or burning). Once you know the stove setting required to maintain pressure, you can almost forget it. However, as with any cooking device, I monitor it periodically. The pressure pot and frypan have flat bottoms which makes food preparation and cleaning a breeze. The glass lid was a major selling point, as it enables conventional use of both pots.

My wife makes succulent turkey drumsticks in only eight minutes of cooking time.

None of the other brands, we previewed, appeared to be constructed as well as the Kuhn Rikon models.

Needless to say, our family considers this set a great value. More important,we use it almost daily.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rolls Royce of Pressure Cookers
Kuhn Rikon Pressure Cookers are considered among the best -- if not the best -- in the world. They heat quickly, cook evenly and last a lifetime. The 2-pot set is a great value. It's terrific because you have the option of using the small or large cooker AND you have a regular cooking lid which fits both -- so you can also use this top quality item as regular cooking equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great investment, wonderful time-saver
I received a 5-liter Duromatic pressure cooker as a gift 7 years ago, and wondered, "What on earth will I do with it?" Now I use it almost every time I cook. It is well-constructed and lives up to every promise they advertise: fast, healthful cooking has never been easier. If you love beans, there's no better way to cook them--dinner's ready in half an hour or less. Steam vegetables in 1 minute, cook a whole chicken in 19 minutes,or make perfect risotto with NO stirring in under 10 minutes from start to finish! You can make wonderful puddings and cheesecakes, too, with a little practice.

I ordered the "Duo" set to get the glass lid and the smaller cooker. Though I didn't need another 5L, it is quite handy to have two (I use it without pressure for cooking pasta or some soups.) The smaller (2L)size is wonderful for quickly cooking cereals, small quantities for babies or kids, or side dishes.

The recipe book provided with this set is extremely helpful and detailed, so don't be put off by having to learn the cooking techniques (Note to Kuhn-Rikon: a video or CD-ROM would be wonderful! I received a marketing CD-ROM a few years ago but IMO it should be in the box.) It can be tricky to convert recipes, the book contains thorough charts with cooking times for most foods, and once you get the basics down you'll be ready to start experimenting with your favorites. If you would like to cook with more whole grains and beans, this is a must-have. If you want that slow-cooked tenderness, but not the boring taste of Crock Pot cooking, pressure cooking is for you. Unlike the Crock Pot, the PC allows you to start with a saute', use the pressure to speed up your cooking time, and then add more delicate ingredients at the end so they stay crisp and colorful. Also, on a hot day like today, I appreciate that the shorter cooking time uses less energy and doesn't heat up the kitchen!

At first I had a hard time finding good PC recipes, but lately there seem to be more cookbooks coming out as the PC seems to be enjoying a bit of a revival. I just ordered Rick Rodgers' "Pressure Cooking for Everyone" and am happy to see more recipes for "gourmet" foods as well as everyday meals.

My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that I wish they sold custom cooking inserts for puddings and cheesecakes. The standard method is to cover your springform pan with foil and make a "harness" from foil to lift your pan in and out. You end up wasting a lot of foil, and it is easy to accidentally dump your dish on the way out. It would be great if they made an insert with a lid and handles to make this easier.

It would be hard to find a more versatile cooking tool, and I'm newly in love with my Duromatic(s) again after receiving my new set. BTW, the 7-year-old set is still perfect, not even the gasket has worn out, although it looks a bit shabby compared to the new styling and shiny finish of the new set. I can't say enough good things about Kuhn-Rikon or Duromatic. Give it a try! Here's to healthier, faster cooking in your home!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great affordable pressure cooker set!
This is my first pressure cooker set and I love it. It really helps if you can find classes on how to use your pressure cookers. If you're in Phoenix or Gilbert, AZ, you're in luck! I attend FREE weekly classes at Shar's Kitchen Center (www.SharsKitchen.com). She teaches how to use your pressure cookers (and you get to sample her recipes). It really inspires you to get the maximum from your cookers! I've even learned how to make a CHEESECAKE in mine! Excellent set -- Kuhn Rikon is the best brand and the safest on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Altitude Pressure Cooking
The quality of this pressure cooker is extraordinary. I bought it because at the high altitude where I live, it takes forever to cook beans and potatoes. Boiled potatoes used to take an hour, now take ten minutes. Beans which I'd boil for five hours were still a little chewy, but they're perfect now at fifteen minutes (but still need an overnight soak). Another benefit is that quick cooking keeps the kitchen cool in summer. This pressure cooker is ultra simple in its heavy stainless construction, and will be a legacy to hand down to your children. ... Read more

The Deluxe Safety LidLifter is the perfect 7-inch kitchen tool for anyone tired of dodging the jagged edges of cans and lids. Unlike conventional openers, the Safety LidLifter cuts into a can below the rim of the lid, so there are no sharp edges, the blade never touches the food, and the final turn of the crank doesn't inconveniently drop the lid into the can's contents. The turning mechanism works smoothly for both right- and left-handers, and the soft turning knob provides a comfortable grip. Best of all, the cute puffin-beak-shaped lifting clamp means you never have to touch a lid. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kuhn Rock-On!
I am a kitchen gadget snob, not easily impressed. This product not only impressed me, it changed my life. I feast on the finest foods from around the world and the ability to passionately lick every last morsel from my cans nary a worry of shrapnel lacerations is enough to send me into a frenetic tribal-like dance! If the operator has half a brain no metal could ever get into their fetas, hearts of palm or escargot. The opener cuts to the exterior of food, in the seal area of the can, where the metal is doubled over. I have never seen a sharp edge anyway, having washed all our cans for recycling. In more than a year it has yet to show any signs of wear. The BEST on the market!

5-0 out of 5 stars This can opener is worth the price!
This is the best can opener I have ever used in 35+ years of housekeeping! It stays clean, does not rust, stays sharp, is easy to turn (padded handle) and the can edges are so neat, you can put the lid right back on if you want to. I am buying this for gifts. Forget electric can openers that get so filthy and rust and get dull. This one is perfect and I expect it to perform for years and years.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very BEST, Period!
There are far less expensive can openers out there but none better. A great functioning unit, it's built like a Swiss watch. I bought one for myself and 2 to give as Christmas gifts.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Sharp Edges? I Wish!
I don't know why Amazon claims that this can opener leaves no sharp edges. It leaves a very sharp edge all the way around the rim of the can. Frankly, I would rather have a sharp edge on the lid, which I'm just going to throw away. Tonight, I was scooping stuff out of a narrow can that I'd opened with this kind of opener, and I cut myself badly on the rim.

Please, guys, tell the truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as great as others have claimed it to be..
Maybe I got a defective one because the can opener was very hard to operate. I can not get it to open a can of soup for my own sake. i bought this item after reviewing all the positive reviews on Amazon.com. it's a little pricey for an item that leaves silver edges on all the cans. I've had it for a whole month now. The only thing that I have been able to open easily with this item are cans of tuna- other than that everything seems to shade sliver pieces. I was very excited about getting this cool looking gadget. The appearance is very clean and sleek but based on my experience it doesn't offer what was promised. Its very hard for small hands to operate. When my father used it, he experienced the same problem. If you are considering the purchase of this item, I suggest you try it out at a local store that has an easy return policy. I stopped using mine because the silver pieces were falling into my soup cans. I love the construction of the piece, its appearance and the weight of the item but it didn't meet my expectations. For safety concerns this item doesn't even deserve one star. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice addtion to the kitchen
This cookie press is just what I was looking for. Some of the discs are easier to use than othes, but it is fun and makes great cookies. It is pretty easy to clean and to learn. With the enclosed directions no one could go wrong with this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use
I have only used this a few times, but both times it made making cookies easier and it was also very easy to clean. I didn't use chilled sheets, though I did not grease them - and I still didn't have any problems. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Christmas cookie production a pleasure
I don't like making cookies; the process is time-consuming if you do cut cookies or drop. The Kuhn Rikon has a trigger mechanism that ticks off each cookie in record time. They bake quickly (small) and they are welcome in a cookie swap or a gift bag of cellophane decorated with ribbons.

The instructions on the recipe tell you to chill the sheets and not grease them. This is vital to keep the cookie from coming up again after you pull the trigger over the sheet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use
My first cookie press so I don't have any thing to compare it to but..I thought it was easy to use and somewhat easy to clean. I can't really complain about this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
I am an avid baker and thought I was trading "UP" with this purchase. Used it once last year--with inconsistent results. Tried again this year and the plastic cylinder cracked leaving me with a mess and a cookie dough that ended up in the trash. There has to be a better product on the market. I think the stainless steel cylinders are the way to go. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Kuhn Rikon's Safety Lid Lifter is the perfect 7-inch kitchen tool for anyone tired of dodging the jagged edges of cans and lids. Unlike conventional openers, the Safety LidLifter cuts into a can below the rim of the lid, so there are no sharp edges, the blade never touches the food, and the final turn of the crank doesn't dip or drop the lid into your tomato purée. The turning mechanism works smoothly for both right- and left-handers, and the sturdy knob sports no-slip ridges. Best of all, the lifting clamp means you never have to touch a lid. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tricky at first, but now it's the only can opener for me
The Kuhn Rikon can opener is a durable, quality-contstructed kitchen tool that I wouldn't be without now that I've had mine for a few months. How cool is it that you can now open that can of tuna and not risk cutting yourself on the jagged edge? Better yet, when my kids are old enough to start opening their own cans of Spaghettios, I know it will be safe for them (hey, they don't eat those all the time, but, you know...).
This was my first time trying a "safe" can opener, so at first I couldn't get the hang of lining it up the can lid with it properly. After only a few tries, though, it became second nature. The little "beak" on the side of the device that grasps the lid for removal when you are done cutting can be a little awkward to maneuver into position as well. Do what I do: save time by pulling apart the lid from the body with your two hands instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Safest best can opener I've ever used
If you have young children or you are accident-prone, then this can opener is the one to buy. First, it's not like the can openers you are used to and it took a little getting used to. This is a can opener about finesse, not muscle. Some folks have said they got metal in the food from its use, I can only image that happened from mishandling the opener. We've *never* had that happen - the food perfectly safe for my 2 year old daughter to eat. The cut can does not have any sharp edges (not that I let my daughter play with cans) but if she got ahold of one, there would be little problem. You don't have to wash off the lid of the can before opening it because the lid doen't fall into the food! It's a time saver too.

The things to know are:
0) Get the opener on the lid correctly (parallel to the lid)
1) Stop when you feel when the opener has completed 1 revolution of the can
2) Use the little grabbers built into the can opener to pull off the top.

It's that simple. I will never go back to the outdated can openers.

1-0 out of 5 stars the hardest can opener
I'm sure that this is a wonderful can opener if you can figure out how to use it. I recieved mine as a gift, and neither the giver, myself, or my husband can figure out how to use the thing. I was told that the instructions could be copied from the internet, but who can find them?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
Ive used one for 6 months now and its great. Its my first of the side cut types but I like it so much that I bought a back-up for myself and Im giving out 2 more as presents. I had concerns that the teeth on the gears are too small and may wear out or strip but I dont use it everyday and it comes with a lifetime warranty. So far there is no wear on the teeth and Im not worried about that anymore either. I make sure I have the cutter placed where I want it before I start turning the handle. Before finding this I had been trying to replace my old style opener and found that aside from being way overpriced, they flat out sucked. I just gave the junkers to Goodwill. And one last thing, I found mine on sale. $16.99 is absurd for a can opener, unless it comes with Elle MacPherson to open the can for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great gadget
After seeing a guy on late-night TV open can after can with one of these things, I just had to try one for myself. First, it's not that much harder to turn than a standard opener. While I don't have arthritis, or anything like that, I've noticed no increased effort with this thing. And, as advertised, it leaves no sharp edges, and you can put the lid back on the can for storage, which is kind of cool. Furthermore, tne cutting wheels and gears never touch the contents of the can, so it stays completely clean.

I couldn't bring myself to give it five stars because: You can't squish the water or oil out of a tuna can with the lid, since the lid won't push down into the can. And even though I've had mine awhile now, I still find it difficult to get the opener positioned properly. Finally, it appears some lids are originally put on with some type cement, which seems to be a bit like rubber cement, and cutting the can from the side exposes this stuff.

Otherwise, I like the opener a lot and feel the "switch" was well worth it. ... Read more
