For avid outdoorspeople, boaters, or folks who just like to know what to expect, this wireless weather station provides all the stats for planning a day outside. The LCD is divided into five areas of information. At the very top of the screen the time is displayed in hours and minutes, and either 12- or 24-hour modes with the date directly below it. A built-in antenna system receives signals from the WWVB radio transmitter in Fort Collins, Colorado, which is in turn is regulated by the atomic clock, to provide precise timekeeping. Once you install the battery, you can set the clock to one of 13 time zones, including all U.S. times zones and Greenwich Mean Time, and the device will automatically set to the accurate time. The clock even automatically adjusts for daylight savings time, so you never need to remember to move it backward or forward by an hour. Two independent alarm settings with snooze are included for convenience.

Forecast icons (three in total) in the middle of the LCD display weather predictions for any 12- to 20-hour time period based on changing air pressure. The remainder of the display is devoted to showing indoor relative humidity and temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius for an indoor location and an outdoor area using the included remote sensor. For more accurate outdoor readings, the base unit can receive information from up to three different sensors, which can each be placed up to 80 feet away. The weather station records the minimum and maximum temperatures readings within a 24-hour period and recalls them at your prompting. In addition, it has an indoor comfort level indicator, which uses happy or sad face icons to inform you if the temperature is at a comfortable level. The wireless weather station requires two AA batteries for the receiver and another two for the remote and a low-battery indicator on the receiver lets you know when they need replacing. This unit is covered by a one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

A great gadget for skiers, surfers, kayakers, or anyone doing physical activity in the sun, this ultraviolet watch monitors the current levels of UV radiation and warns against over-exposure. A powerful UV sensor on top of the watch detects radiation using the UV Index--a spectrum adopted by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) that measures the intensity of UV rays at the Earth’s surface as it relates to the average skin response. In UV Index mode, the watch reports the UV Index range numerically (with 2 or lower being the lowest level of exposure and 11 or higher indicating extreme levels of exposure), and via a color-coded chart along the watch face top. Two UV Index alarms can be set to signal when radiation levels move above a determined low level to a set maximum level.

The main LCD screen has the usual watch features of a watch: it displays the current time in hours, minutes, and seconds; the numeric date; and the day of the week. Additionally, the UV Index color-coded chart shows along the top of the screen. In this mode, the watch can be programmed to chime hourly and sound an alarm at each date change and/or a set time.

Other functions of the watch include a 24-hour countdown timer and a chronograph that measures elapsed time, accumulative elapsed time, or time for one lap. The chronograph calculates time in hours, minutes, seconds, 1/100 second, and has a maximum counting range of 9 hours, 59 minutes, and 59.99 seconds.

Designed for rugged outdoor use, this plastic-encased watch is water-resistant up to 50 meters and has a backlit screen for use once the sun has gone down. La Crosse Technology covers the UV100 under a one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

  • Includes 24-hour timer and 24-hour chronograph
  • Time mode with current time and date; daily alarm
  • Sensor measures UV radiation levels to prevent over-exposure to sun
  • Exhibits UV range numerically and via color-coded bar graph
  • Programmable alarms for upper and lower UV Index ranges

Frequent business travelers can feel secure that they’ll be right on time for meetings in any city with this travel alarm clock. The clock has a built-in antenna system that receives radio signals from the atomic clock, keeping and displaying the precise time in hours, minutes, and seconds. It can be set to one of four United States time zones and will even recognize and automatically update itself during daylight savings times. The alarm is easy to set and the lower right corner of the LCD shows when the alarm is on with and what time it is set to go off. A snooze bar on top of the clock gives you an 8-minute rest before the alarm sounds again. This travel clock has a folding cover that offers protection to the display during travel and doubles as a nighttable stand in the hotel room. The unit measures 2-1/2 by 1 by 3-3/4 inches and fits compactly in a carry-on bag. It runs on one AA battery and is covered by a one-year warranty.--Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

La Crosse Technology keeps you on time to the 10 billionth of a second with this compact digital travel alarm clock. Though a mere 3-1/2 by 2-5/8 inches when folded shut, the clock features radio signal-controlled time measurement. An internal antenna receives transmission from the WWVB radio station in Fort Collins, Colorado, which derives its signal from the National Institute of Science and Technology's atomic clock. As the transmission is continual, the clock readjusts itself regularly for incredible accuracy. Additional features include settings for time zone, day, date, and daylight savings, as well as dual alarms with distinct sounds and adjustable snooze. An EL backlight makes reading the numbers easier, and you can also choose between a 12- or 24-hour display. Powered by a single AAA battery, the clock only receives the radio signal from time zones GMT-4 (Maine) to GMT-10 (Hawaii), but the manual setting is an easy option for globetrotters. --Emily Bedard ... Despite its old-fashioned look, this radio-controlled clock is so accurate all the clocks in the house will be set to it. Perfect for hanging on the wall of a living room or great room, the large analog digits on the nine-inch face are easy to read from quite a distance. A polished brass pendulum swings gently back and forth below the face, visible through a glass window in the alder-wood case.

All this high-tech clock requires in the way of human intervention is the insertion of a new AA battery and a push of the proper time zone button. The hands of the clock immediately begin forwarding as the clock searches for the radio waves emitted from the National Institute of Standards and Technology station in Fort Collins, Colorado. The radio waves penetrate most homes and buildings, although the best placement of the clock is near a window and at least six feet away from an electrical appliance including a computer or television. A second AA battery is needed to swing the pendulum. The clock measures 21 by 13 by 3-1/2 inches and is covered by a two-year warranty. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

Attention farmers and sailors--and any others who might want to know more about their local weather than a local radio has to offer--this Professional Series Wireless Weather Station could very well be useful to you. More information than the average person would even know to ask for appears on readouts on a tiny cherry-tone base station only just bigger than 6 inches square. Three sensors (thermo-hygro, wind, and rain) transmit information from outdoor vantage points to the base station. Indoor and outdoor temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius) and relative humidity are displayed. There are air pressure readings (in inHg or hPa, absolute or relative) as well as wind chill and dew point temperatures. The calendar and time displays (with manual setting option) are synchronized by tuning in to radio station WWVB in Colorado. There's even a forecast display and weather tendency indicator.

The advanced features available in this station are fairly staggering. The WS-2315AL has a detailed display of rainfall data for one-hour, 24-hour, or total-since-last-reset increments, measured in inches or millimeters. It features multiple programmable alarm functions for weather conditions such as approaching storms, heavy rains, or sudden drops in temperature or atmospheric pressure. In addition, it keeps records of all minimum and maximum values along with the times and dates of their recordings. Of special nautical interest are wind direction, displayed three ways, and wind speed in miles/hour, kilometers/hour, miles/second, knots or Beaufort scale. A COM port is included for easy connection to a PC. Heavyweather PC Interface software allows the recording and uploading of all the weather data from the base station, as well as up to 175 sets of weather history data. (The Web site www.heavyweather.info offers more information.)

The Wireless Weather Station set includes: a base receiver station, a thermo-hygro transmitter (WS-2310-25), a wind sensor (WS-2310), a rain sensor (WS-2310-16), an optional wired connection for data transfer, a software in CD-Rom format for transfer of data to PC, a PC RS232 serial port cable, and an AC/DC power adapter. (Base station can also operate on three AA batteries.) The base station measures 6 by 1-1/4 by 6-1/2 inches. La Crosse provides a one-year limited warranty on its weather stations. Each weather station comes with a thoroughly detailed instruction booklet. --Garland Withers ... Read more

Curious about how much rain is falling on this year’s garden? This gauge collects rainfall from a flat, outdoor location and then transmits data to an indoor display unit via a connected 33-foot-long wire. The rain meter reports data in either inches or millimeters on the LCD, which is divided into three sections. The top two sections of the screen calculate the current rain quantity and can be manually reset after a dry spell. The bottom section shows rain data for the last few hours and automatically resets itself after two hours without recording any rainfall. The rainfall collection gauge has a self-tipping bucket that empties itself when it’s too full. Additionally, the entire unit shuts off after 12 hours of no rainfall in order to preserve the life of the two AA batteries. This rain gauge provides readings from a wall or tabletop and is covered by a one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Local WX Man
I am very satisfied with this wx sta. (It is econical and if I really get serious about tracking the wx I will have had enough of an exposure as to whether to upgrade or not.)
This item is "as advertised".

2-0 out of 5 stars wind speed indicator short commings
This Weather station is less then adequate. The temp and humidity work ok but the wind speed sensor is a piece of junk. I would suggest a station that uses the spinning cup sensor. One little piece of spider web caught up in the blades of this one puts it out of service. Also their technical support is poor to say the least.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great setup at a reasonable price
After reading about problems with the Oregon Scientific stuff I decided to look for something else. I read that Davis is the best consumer weather station but it was double the price of La Crosse.

So far I have been very happy with setup. Everything has worked out of the box (haven't tried the computer software yet). Now I know how much rain we are getting so I don't over water our new trees and what the weather will be for the next few hours. It has been rather rainy here lately and this station has been right on when predicting rain.

We have the base unit sitting in a south facing window at this time and it is receiving the Atomic clock radio signal. The outdoor temp guage (module that the wind and rain plugs into) is one floor up and on the east side of the house. Even at that distance it seems to have no problems updating.

The one thing I don't like is that the display does not show the in-door and out-door temps at the same time. I find myself pressing the display button a lot to get the different info. Would have been nice if more info was on the screen at the same time. This is the only reason I'm rating this at 4 of 5 stars. ... Read more

For those who are on a crusade to cut household energy costs, this power cost controller monitors where you are using the most energy and whether or not your appliances are the most efficient. The power cost controller plugs into any outlet and you must then plug another appliance into the device to determine the energy usage. In addition to monitoring current power consumption in watts, this gadget also calculates the maximum number of watts used, the total number of kilowatts per hour used, and even forecasts future costs. The cost control measures appliances that run on anywhere from 3 to 1,800 watts and so is ideal for larger appliances, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and computers. 2-0 out of 5 stars A monitor, not controller
.
. It monitors and forecasts the cost of power usage, but it won't control.
. Those 3 buttons are very difficult to click. The TARIFF setting only accept 2 digits after decimal point, while PG&E uses 0.11589 which is 5 digits. The limitation on the TARIFF setting is the major problem which makes the cost forecasting away from precision.

Amazon.com Review

A great gadget to mount on a boat, enclosed porch, or outdoor deck, this battery-powered wireless station reports the temperature in your immediate environment. Readings are displayed in Fahrenheit and Celsius for indoor and outdoor locations using a remote sensor. For more accurate outdoor readings, the base unit can receive information from up to three different sensors that can each be placed up to 80 feet away. The temperature station also records minimum and maximum temperatures within a 24-hour period, and recalls them at your prompting. This device features a dual-setting alarm clock with snooze, 12- or 24-hour time mode, and a date display with the numeric month and day. For precise time- and date-keeping, a built-in antenna system receives signals from the WWVB radio transmitter in Fort Collins, Colorado, which is in turn is regulated by the atomic clock. This wireless temperature station requires two AA batteries for the receiver, two AA batteries for the remote, and either stands on a table or hangs on a wall. The product is covered by a one-year limited warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more
