The Best
It took a few tries to get it right with this machine. However, it gets it right! I had an early model, about 20 years old, and it just wore out. This one does an excellent job. The frother works great and gives me great frothed milk every time. I found that I had to warm the milk slightly in the microwave before frothing or it was too cold and cooled down the coffee. It is also important to grind your coffee very finely and tamp it well. When you do both, the cappuccino is as good as any you will buy out.

Just gets better and better...
We have owned a Briel pump machine for 5+ years, and we roast and grind our own coffee.

The first cups made with the LaPovini were better than anything we have had (or made) in the past 5 years! Better than any local establishments have produced, or that we have managed to eek out of our machine...

Our only regret is that we didn't discover these marvelous machines earlier!

There is enough help online to get you up and running with a LaPavoni, and the video helps as well. The included printed instructions are more than adequate.

You probably won't need the single shot filter holder...the double is just right.

Our mixture for cappaccinos is 1/2 cream and 1/2 water, which froths wonderfully and is much creamier than any milk mixture. The LaPovoni steams this incredibly. Our model doesn't have the automatic attachment, and we don't miss it.

A good burr grinder is a must, but that is likely true for all good coffee making.

Don't be afraid of these beautiful beasts.

Coffee Worth Drinking
Finally there is a Espresso machine that makes a GREAT cup of coffee. Takes only 4 or 5 minutes to warm up, a "no brainer" process to pull a great espresso. Compared to stove top or other electric espresso makers, this company has spent the time and energy to develop a machine that gives GREAT coffee morning after morning. If you can remember to refill the water tank, clean out the basket, wipe off the steamer rod -- you will have good coffee day after day.

My only regret is that I didn't buy the 16 cup maker. But life cannot always come up roses.

Simply the Best
We bought the 16-cup version on our honeymoon in Italy. We've had it for five years. It makes great cappuccino. I bought some extra filters from Thomas Cara in San Francisco, and I can crank out 4 cappuccinos in a row. When we have guests over, they rave about the coffee, and swear it's the best they've ever had.

The machine isn't hard to use - true, you need to learn how it works, it's not like Mr. Coffee, but that doesn't make it hard. It has good instructions, and you can mostly figure it out by looking at it - water goes here, coffee goes there, lift and lower the handle for coffee, steam a little milk - and cappuccino heaven! Ok, it's a little more work than Pop-Tarts, and you can infinitely play with the grind and techniques to create the perfect espresso... so what? You're going to make coffee with this machine for the next twenty years.

The machine is fussy about the grind, however - too coarse, and the water just gushes out. Too fine, and the water won't come through at all! Of course, once you get your grinder set "just so", you never need to adjust it.

I never succeeded at steaming milk with the "wand." My Pavoni included a plastic "cappuccino automatic attachment," which consists of a tube which you put into the milk, and a black plastic aerator. This attachment makes fantastic, foamy milk.

The quality of the milk foaming depends on its freshness. Milk doesn't foam as well after 3 or 4 days (Funny - milk tastes the same after 3 days, but it doesn't foam the same). Like most home machines, La Pavoni won't get the milk as hot as commercial machines will. By pre-heating the cup with steam or hot water before putting in the milk or espresso, you can overcome this.

Our Pavoni isn't just an appliance. It's beautiful to look at, and it's built with heirloom quality. It needed repairs once, but... refitted its worn gaskets, polished its chrome finish, and got it working like new.

For the purists only
I had one of these machines for years. Actually I had several, and even gave a couple away as gifts.

It will make fantastic espresso. However, it requires practice to perfect the grind, pressure required when pulling down the handle, and speed when pulling the shot.

It's a pain to use, but it's great to look at. I finally decided to get a pump machine, because I didn't want to spend the effort. Other people I know love it.

don't like this one
I've had a Krups burr grinder for many years and like it, but when I started making French press coffee, I needed something that would give me a coarser grind. I bought this one and didn't like it from the beginning. It's very awkward to empty the ground coffee, it gets all over the place. But the real problem with this coffee grinder is getting the amount of ground coffee that I want. Sometimes I set it for, say, three cups and that's what I get, and other times, it seems to forget to turn off and I get more than double that. Good Espresso after tweaking
As others have commented, this grinder does not grind fine enough for espresso out of the box. However, it is fairly easy to tweak the grinder to go finer. I can now grind fine enough to choke my espresso machine.

To tweak: simply undo the three screws inside the bean hopper. Lift the top off. Adjust the setting to 1 (finest), then lift the adjusting wheel out and reposition to a new setting (I used 7). Reassemble the machine, and now you can go several steps finer. I use a setting four or five steps past 1 for my espresso.

I am not a coffee snob, but I do enjoy the taste of the 25 second espresso shots that I have achieved with the tweaked grinder.

Ack - broken AGAIN
I consider myself a coffee snob - so weigh my opinions accordingly. For my residence I use excellent equipment, but for my vacation cottage I just can't justify spending [a lot] on a grinder - so I bought one of these little things. La Pavoni has HISTORICALLY had a great name in the espresso world, so I figured it would be a passable [less expensive] burr grinder.

...you get what you pay for. This is not, in any way, a well made grinder and 'passable' may be overly kind.

I am now on my third one, it gets used intensivly one weekend in 10 and I have only been using them for a year. The burr mechanism is a flat parallel design which has a tendency to overheat the beans as it grinds. Further, the entire mechanism depends on a single small nylon gear which has been the failing point of each one I have owned.

It generates static such that you have to brush the ground catcher after every use and with fresh roasted coffee (we use a Hearthware) it is unusually tortuously inconsistant; it cannot handle Colombain Excelsio grade beans as they are too large.

In all, this little thing is a REAL disappointment. After doing a little research, it turns out this is just a rebadged OEM from a "European" manufacturer. Not the best use of [my money].

OK, but not for espresso
The grinder works OK, especially for regular coffee, but it has several problems. One is that it doesn't quite grind fine enough even at the finest setting for home espresso machines. I run the grinds through quickly a second time, and that seems to get the right grind, but it's a mess. That's the second problem: The grounds do get electrically charged, so it's tough to get them out of the container cleanly; major cleanup job each time. Third, the plastic isn't very good: A light tap broke the grind receptacle, so I have to put my finger over the hole to keep grinds from flying around the kitchen. And fourth, good luck trying to get a part replacement. I ordered a new receptacle, which arrived broken, with no lid, and no packing slip, so now the company that sent it (it's their address and phone number on the box label!) says it has no record and therefore cannot accept a return.
Upshot: Don't bother unless you can get it on a deep sale, as I did. And be prepared for a less than fun experience using it. Better to spend a few extra bucks on a Solis or equivalent at McStarbucks.

Great Product
I own this unit and have been really pleased with it. I also own the La Pavoni lever machine and so it is important to get that fine grind. This unit performs. If it does not grind fine enough you can go to your local electric repair shop and have them adjust the unit to grind that is finer.

A good deal for the price
This compact burr mill does an excellent job---dial the number of cups, dial the grind and hit the button. The grind is even and extra fine is really extra fine. It's no more noisy than my old blade mill, has no spillage, but there is the usual amount of static you expect with an acrylic hopper. In fact, that is my only concern: the acrylic hopper seems very thin and easily breakable---it's also not covered by the one year warranty. If you are making more than one or two pots of coffee a day, you should probably invest in one of the more expensive professional models (which LP also makes), but for "a pot a day" person with a little care, this mill is a good deal. ...
