Amazon.com Review

Whip up custom coffee specialty drinks in your own kitchen, with just the right amount of foam on your double tall latte, with this sturdy Italian-made espresso machine. It has an all-steel construction under heavy chrome plating, making it as sturdy and shiny as the bumpers of a '55 Buick. The machine is 12 by 7 inches in size (with the handle lowered) and comes with a tamper, screen, screen holder, measuring ladle, and cappuccino attachment, as well as complete operating instructions and a ten-minute video.

The machine's sleek, retro look sports shiny surfaces, a thick base with curved edges, and a pull-down coffee compressor. It's attractive enough to leave out on the counter (and really too heavy to move around frequently), and once you get used to inexpensive lattes at home, you'll want it handy for everyday use. --Marcie Bovetz

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Built to last
After wearing out three Krups minis and one DeLonghi automatic-pump machine, I wanted an espresso maker that would last a while. The La Pavoni Europiccola was much more expensive than any of my previous machines, but with its manual pump mechanism and solid construction, it was worth the price.

It's great looking -- more chrome than a '59 Coupe De Ville -- and it makes great espresso, with lasting crema and that wonderful espresso taste that comes only from water held at exactly the right temperature (just under boiling).

I did have to spend some time experimenting with different grinds and blends of coffee to get the right combination. Correct use of the manual pump also requires some practice; my first few attempts went down the sink after I tasted them. An hour or so of playing around was enough, however, and I can now have professional-quality espresso, at home, any time I want. I highly recommend this machine to anybody who's serious about good coffee.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but impractical
The La Pavoni has become an industrial design icon, and, in some circles more concerned about prettiness than practicality, the must-have espresso maker.

Unfortunately, looking good is the only thing it does well. You can get reasonably good espresso out of this machine, but only after weeks of tinkering and experimenting, and it is just extremely inconvenient to use.

Here are the problems I have collected from two separate friends (one who owns one, and another who used to and swore never to get near one again!)

1) somewhat fragile
2) no thermostat, machine could explode if relief valve jams (my friend's did!)
3) machine requires close monitoring (see item 2)
4) after using up water in (small) tank, machine must be left to cool down before reuse
5) messy
6) limited supply of steam for cappucinos (see item 2)
7) difficult to gauge the right amount of coffee: not enough and you can't achieve sufficient pressure, too much and you can't lock in the filter holder
8) difficult to learn how to "pump" properly
9) even on its best day, can't achieve the results of a decent pump-driven machine that costs less than half its price.

If you plan on using the machine but absolutely have to have an exotic-looking, conversation piece machine, you may want to look at the Francis Francis machine. It's in the same price range, but at least it's pump-driven.

If you care more about the taste of the coffee and the practicality of the machine, you should definitely consider the Saeco Vienna. It's 30% cheaper than the La Pavoni, makes better coffee, and has push-button convenience. It's also extremely reliable, and perfect for when you entertain (anybody can use it)

That leaves the La Pavoni for people who want a great looking conversation piece on their countertop but don't plan on using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravissimo!
This is a Ferrari of espresso machines. In addition to being a work of art (it's at MOMA in the permanent collection), La Povoni makes great espresso, period.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the person who cares
My parents bought this about five years ago and I followed suit about a year ago. When she first bought it I thought they were crazy, but when it got there I understood why.

This machine is superb for almost any kind of coffee. Sometimes I like a strong espresso and sometimes I like a cold cafe sheccerato which is a cold coffee and is great. (To make it you simply get a shaker (like a martini shaker) and fill it with ice and a few teaspoons of sugar. Brew the coffee and while it is still very hot throw it in the shaker and shake it strongly for about a minute. The result is an ice cold frothy espresso, great for warm days - forget Starbucks imitation stuff, this is much better).

As other people have said, it takes a little bit of time to get it right. Typically I've found that very thin grains are not the best to work with, something between your typical Illy coffee grain and the larger cheap grains usually works well. It take a bit to get used to, but once you start to get a hold of the whole concept it works superbly well. Frankly, even when you do a poor job the coffee is still good.

In addition, my parents have had this item for about five years and have not had a single problem. It's extremely easy to clean and if you are in a rush it's also a great machine since it loads so quickly and easily.

Also, if you are running out the door you need not wait for the water to completely heat up. You can run it after just a few minutes (of course your coffee won't be as warm, but it doesn't have to heat up completely in order to use it). For those quick out-the-door mornings, this is great. You won't have the best espresso in the world, but you'll still have one that beats just about anything.

I've been through about three [price range] machines in the last few years and they all broke or just didn't taste right. ... You have to be able to taste the difference between good and bad coffee to enjoy this machine. If you don't you probably won't enjoy this machine as much. In other words, if Folgers Instant coffee tastes good to you, move along.

It's also worth getting good coffee for this. ...

In the end, if you are looking for a high-quality product that makes high quality coffee, this is a great choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine
I've had this machine for 5 years. I use it twice a day. I did have to send it in once for repair, a very small part broke, that was about 3 years ago so i don't recall what the exact problem was. It cost me $[money] to ship it UPS and the repair was only $[money]. Be careful though, they tried to replace other "parts" such as the La Pavoni label on the front. If you do need repairs don't let them add things on you really don't want/need repaired.
I've never had to preheat the milk, you do have to heat it to about 180 degree to get really good froth, at least with skim. Couldn't be happier with this one. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

True baristas "pull" an espresso with a lever instead of punching a button and relying on an automatic pump's whims. With this machine, you force water through the coffee yourself, using the lever to precisely control speed. That means full flavor and the thick cap of cream marking a perfect drink. Burnished brass and outfitted with polished-wood handles and steam-control knob, this machine looks 19th century but operates with 21st-century reliability.

A steam wand heats milk for hot chocolate and creates foam for cappuccinos, lattes, and other coffee drinks, while an alternate wand with frothing attachment automatically produces heaps of foam directly into cups. The water tank holds 20 ounces, enough to make eight cups before the tank (accessible under the machine's removable dome) needs refilling and the water needs to be heated again. (The heating element's rating is 1000 watts maximum, 800 watts minimum.) A glass tube permits water-level monitoring, while a thermostat triggering a green light signals when water reaches the correct crema-producing temperature. An internal fuse, which can be reset in the base, prevents overheating.

Pulling an espresso the old-fashioned way is enormously gratifying, and a video accompanying the machine teaches anyone the skills needed to become a true barista. This machine will contribute nobility to your kitchen and boost your ranking among friends. --Fred Brack

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Jaguar of Espresso Machines
Please trust me, although I may not be an EXPERT on coffee, I know ALOT about espresso. I have worked in the coffee business for over 5 years. I have tasted the good, the bad, and the ugly. I drink espresso and espresso drinks regularly. Through my years of drinking espresso I beleive there are two things essential to the perfect cup. 1. The beans must be dark, oily, and finely ground. They must be of the highest quality you can afford. 2. The most important....your machine must be a REAL espresso maker. Forget about those combo coffee makers. Forget about Name-brand department store machines...they all have one thing in common. The espresso always tastes weak and you cannot control the strength of it. These ordinary machines cannot give you rich espresso topped with Creme( a frothy rich creamy foam that floats atop the perfect espresso). This is because no machine, except for industrial high-tech machines used in coffee shops, can carry the pressure necessary to create the perfect espresso. This machine can! I have used one, searched for one for YEARS...even looking in Italian papers...and here it is right at Amazon! If you are looking for perfection...you've found it! The hand-pull design allows you to control the strength of your espresso..thereby giving you superior tasting espresso drinks as well. I would give this machine 10 stars because you would have to go to Italy to find such a high quality machine..honest....I really do know this stuff. If you have any questions regarding this machine, espresso, or anything to do with quality coffee please feel free to email me. Espresso fanatics..this is a MUST have.

Amazon.com Review

Perhaps it's not surprising that an Italian company such as La Pavoni takes its espresso and cappuccino very seriously. The detailed manual and video that come with this professional-style machine spare no small detail while guiding you through the espresso and cappuccino process. With proper equipment, La Pavoni argues, including very fine grounds and a state-of-the art machine, an espresso or cappuccino can be a work of art. Because cafe prices are rising and an improperly made espresso is indistinguishable from mud, it's worth investing the time and equipment required for a rich and truly satisfying espresso experience. For me, one thing that separates a barista-style cappuccino from many homemade efforts is the quality of the foam. The Europiccola produces foam with just right amount of frothiness, although the foam can also be controlled if you prefer less enthusiastic frothing. For top-quality cappuccinos, the machine should be descaled four or five times a year (descaling instructions are included). Made of gleaming chrome, this strikingly attractive machine should not be cleaned with abrasives. --Laura Cuthbert

Amazon.com Review

Italy's La Pavoni invokes a bygone era with this handsome machine. The hard-plastic hoppers and spout are sepia-toned, like old photographs of dignified men and women relaxing on a Ravello terrace, and burnished brass houses the grinder's electric motor. Good looks, however, don't overshadow the grinder's performance in delivering fresh, full-flavored ground coffee. First, pour up to 8 ounces of whole beans into the top hopper. Then turn a knob on the side to adjust grind from fine to coarse through nine finely calibrated settings. Press a button on the side, and coffee ground to your personal specifications spills into the removable front hopper. For grinding directly into a pot, remove the front hopper, place the pot beneath the spout, and press upward against a lever to activate the grinder. A quick cleanup with a brush that's included and the grinder awaits the next day. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another satisfied user of the La Pavoni PGB Coffee Grinder
I'm quite satisfied with the excellent grind consistency and quality. The brass La Pavoni PGB Coffee Grinder is close to being a commercial grade burr grinder -- equal to those found in Europe's espresso bars and restaurants. Be aware that the brass finish is "plated" over hard plastic, so carefully inspect your new grinder before using it. I had to return mine twice to the retailer back east, before a perfect one arrived. I've used mine daily for more than three years without any issues.

Just a quick note to Patricia O'Connor who considered it "a piece of junk." With proper care & regular cleaning, the La Pavoni PGB Coffee Grinder will last a lifetime. -smile-

2-0 out of 5 stars SADLY DISSAPPOINTING
I PUCHASED THE LA PAVONI GRINDER ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO, TRULY THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE THE LAST GRINDER I EVER NEEDED. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE WELL MADE AND FOR PROFESSIONAL USE, SO I FIGURED THAT USING IT ONCE A DAY WOULD BE A PIECE OF CAKE, AND I WAS WILLING TO SPEND THE BIG BUCKS FOR SOMETHING THAT WOULD LAST.
AFTER MY CAPRESSO BURR GRINDER EXPERIENCE, I REALLY WANTED A STURDY QUALITY MACHINE. WELL, AFTER HALF A YEAR OF USE, THE GRINDER BURR IS COMPLETELY WORN OUT, AND WOULDN'T GRIND MY FINGER IF I STUCK THAT IN IT, AND, NO ONE CAN SEEM TO FIND THE PARTS TO FIX IT, AND IF THEY COULD IT WOULD COST ME [MONEY]. AREVADERCI LA PAVONI!! OH AND BYE BYE [MONEY], WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerhouse
I tried this unit at a friend's house recently. It was strong, solid, and could really pulverize those beans. Too much for me to purchase, but I bring my whole beans next door to grind precisely to my taste. La Pavoni certainly does it right. ... Read more

The art of making Turkish coffee is one of the oldest in the world. To prepare the coffee properly, you must begin with an authentic Turkish Coffee Maker. The process, unlike American coffee, involves boiling the grounds and results in a sweet, mild tasting beverage. Crafted of copper and brass, this one is finished with a lacquer finish so it never needs polishing - for occasional use, just wipe it dry. For continual use, a brass or copper cleaner will remove the laquered finish, resulting in the classic copper/brass exterior. Collectors will appreciate the way it remains looking like new on display. In addition to making coffee, you can also use it for warming milk. ... Read more
