Amazon.com Review

Designed for accuracy and remote readings, this digital Maverick cooking thermometer untethers you from the oven or the grill. You can even lie down in the hammock knowing the unit will signal you when food reaches pre-programmed settings. In addition to gauging internal temperature, the thermometer tests degree of doneness, tracks cooking time with a 24-hour timer, and can be programmed for six different categories of meat. When your roast or turkey reaches ideal levels, the receiver beeps and flashes its alert.

Composed of two digital units and a stainless-steel probe on a heat-resistant wire, the kit requires some basic practice at first. After that, use is straightforward and simple. In action, the transmitter shows the current temperature, while the receiver shows meat category, doneness level, set and current temperatures, and cooking time. Each of the digital units includes an integrated stand, and the receiver also sports a clip for your belt or apron. The kit requires four AAA batteries total, which Maverick includes to get you started. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not The 2-Probe I Thought I Was Ordering, But Still Good!
Amazon was sold out of the ET-7 2-probe thermometer. But when I saw the ET-72 for sale, I added it to my shopping cart and ordered it without checking for how many probes it had. When I got it, I was disappointed that it only had one probe. BUT...

The first thing I noticed was that the temperature read 77 degrees - the exact temperature of the room I was in. So much for it being 15 degrees off, as reported in another review. Just to make sure, I put the probe in my mouth (oh yes I did!) and the temp read 99 degrees. (If it had read 114 degrees, I would have passed out.) So the thermometer really works!

I haven't cooked with it yet, but I am sure that it will read the temp of my food perfectly. And yes, I will sanitize the probe before I use it on the food. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good single probe remote thermometer
We use this model as well as the dual-probe ET-7 for competition BBQ contests throughout the summer and fall. Sure is nice to be able to tend to other tasks, or just shoot the bull with other teams and still have confidence that you know what your pit is up to at any given time. Highly recommended.

Equipped with 14 pre-programmed settings, this digital Maverick thermometer helps you achieve ideal results for both candy confections and fried treats. A heavy-duty tool for the detailed chef, the RediFork Pro thermometer from Maverick gives you the exacting temperature information you need for perfect results on the grill or in the kitchen. Designed for beef, poultry, pork, and fish, the thermometer features a generous LCD monitor and reasonably simple touch-button operation. To use, you simply insert to stainless-steel temperature tips in the thickest part of the steak or filet. The display comes on automatically once food is hotter than 113 degrees F. A grid appears on the display, indicating temperature and doneness levels (rare, medium-rare, medium, and well done) for each of the four categories (beef, fish, poultry, and pork), so you can check your food accordingly. This is especially handy if you have both burgers and chicken on the grill at one time--the grid lets you check them both without changing any settings. Structurally sturdy, the thermometer has a comfortable textured grip and a hook for hanging storage. An optional integrated flashlight turns on with a simple side button for grilling at dusk or in the dark. Designed to increase both safety and good flavor, the Maverick BarbBFork thermometer uses a built-in microprocessor to precisely read the temperature level of steaks, chicken breasts, and fish filets. Operation of the fork is simple--just insert its tip into the thickest part of the meat, wait a few seconds, and press the register button. A Fahrenheit reading, accurate to 2 degrees pops up on the LCD monitor. In addition, a "doneness" guide at the bottom of the display indicates whether the food is frozen, thawing, rare, medium, well done, or cooked. (This is a helpful guide, though it’s still up to the chef to remember safety levels for different kinds of meat.) More precise than visual or tactile tests, the thermometer helps you reach target temperatures with precision, as well as cook food to your guests’ individual tastes. Amazon.com Review

Both in the kitchen and on the patio, this electronic fork/thermometer is handy for cooks who can't recall the proper temperatures for degrees of doneness when barbecuing, grilling, and roasting meats and poultry. Plunge the fork's prong tips into a steak or chicken, and press the top button on the handle for five seconds. The internal temperature will register by lighting up one of six gradations listed on the handle: well done for pork, well done for other meats and poultry, medium-well, medium, rare, and very rare. The advantage of a fork/thermometer is that it functions as both, though it's not as precise as a standalone instant-read food thermometer. This fork/thermometer is powered by a five-year lithium battery (included), has a hanging loop at the end of its handle, and wipes clean with a soapy cloth. --Fred Brack ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

With the risks of e. coli and other food borne illnesses associated with undercooked meat, inexperienced cooks often choose to err on the safe side, unnecessarily charring a once succulent duck breast or pork tenderloin. While a basic meat thermometer eradicates some of the problem, the simple utensil hardly accommodates the unique specifications of each meat or personal preferences in terms of wellness. For such considerations, Maverick offers this digital chef’s fork from their Redi-Fork line.

The fork prongs contain sensory tips that monitor temperatures when inserted in meat. The fork electronically sends this information to the easy-to-read LCD display located on the side of the fork’s body. Icons for four different categories of meat light up as heats reach the safe temperature point for fish, red meat, white meat, and poultry. The screen also monitors four divisions of wellness: rare, medium rare, medium, and well done. With these two wellness scales, users can ensure their health while suiting their taste preferences. Additional features include an overdone indicator, low battery notification, and automatic shutdown. A replaceable 1.5-volt AA battery powers the fork for up to two years and comes installed. The fork should not be immersed in water or placed in a dishwasher. For the best care, wipe with a wet cloth and dry immediately. Maverick offers a limited 90-day warranty. 3-0 out of 5 stars Works well, but...
We bought this thermo-fork mainly for barbequing. Who wants to cut into their meat a few times to see if it's done? Well, this fork makes it easy to tell graphically if your meat, fish, pork, or fowl are rare, medium rare, medium, medium-well, or well-done, plus the actual temperature is given. We've had pretty good results with chicken, but hamburgers tend to fall apart when pronged on the grill. Two gripes, though. First, the display is awkward to read (upside-down) when you're pushing the fork into the meat. Second, the handle is not at all water tight. So, when you wash the fork and splash water on the handle (inevitable...) water seeps in and gets the display wet and fogged. Moreover, water can remain trapped between the display and the "conductive sponge strip" that connects the display to the circuit board. Result: display fades or disappears. Not too bad to fix (open it up and dry off all contacts carefully,) but not robust. If I had to buy another, I'd consider the straight thermometers without the fork part. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfactory
The item that I purchased was so poorly packaged that it arrived with several pieces missing. I requested a refund, but have not heard back from the seller for several days. The item is unusable, and now I have a lengthy process to try to recoup my losses. I will never buy an item this way again.

5-0 out of 5 stars It has worked well for me
This is the first grinder I have ever bought. I wanted it to grind up chicken backs so I could make my own dog food. I feed BARF. It works well for that. Just don't over load it & listen to the motor, so it doesn't get over worked. I use the larger diameter holes, which makes grinding easier and it goes faster. You do have to cut up the backs into smaller pieces before putting them in the grinder. I use the sauage maker which comes with it to put the dog food in sauage links. If I make more then 8lb of links with the larger hole grinder at a time I have to remember to clean out the sauage maker, before the 2nd batch or the larger bones will get stuck in the sauage maker.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Grinder
I bought this grinder many years ago when it was made by Villaware. I make cat food for my numerous cats (I'm a breeder) and it has held up to grinding hundreds of pounds of chicken or rabbit meat with bone. I recommend this grinder to anyone thinking of making their own cat or dog food...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great grinder!
Before buying the Maverick grinder, I read the other reviews and was scared into buying the 320 watt Villaware grinder that another reviewer recommended. BIG MISTAKE!! Using the Villaware grinder for making raw cat food (ground chicken with organs and bones)was a nightmare because of a design flaw. I couldn't even grind plain old chicken meat without having to disassemble the unit literally every 30 seconds to clear out stringy clogs. The reverse switch feature was of no use whatsoever. After several frustrating attempts to use the Villaware grinder, I took the advice of several people and bought the Maverick. What a joy to work with! Grinding chicken bones is no problem and it takes me a quarter of the time to make 2 lbs of cat food than it did when using that lousy Villaware, and I get a far superior end product.

The take away message from my experience: it will take me a lot of effort, time and money to find out if I got a lemon or if the Villaware has a true design flaw. Wattage isn't everything. Learn from my costly mistake and GET THIS GRINDER.

1-0 out of 5 stars what a disappointment!
After numerous online newsgroup exchanges with others who've bought this appliance, I thought I was getting an efficient and effective tool to cut down on daily food preparation time for my dog while providing wholesome, balanced raw meals, which could be frozen. The first 2 times I used the Maverick, it operated well, though I was surprised that food had to be cut so thin to avoid getting stuck in the opening. Today when using it *for only the 3rd time* vegetable juice is collecting in the food tray, running out of the machine and splashing all over my kitchen and clothing, when I try to press food through the opening. What a mess! I'm only grateful I decided to grind veggies first this time instead of meat! Food isn't moving through as it should, just sitting at the entrance to the grinding mechanism going nowhere, just creating more juice and more mess. Buyer beware---keep the box it comes in, as I didn't and don't know that I'll be able to get my money back. Not even interested in a replacement---you should see my kitchen! And there's still a counter filled with veggies, fruit and meat that still have to somehow be processed.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Trusty Thermometer -- kinda cheeky
This thermometer has been very accurate for the wide variety of uses to which I've subjected it so far. This includes not only meats (we're talking steak, hotdogs, salmon, chicken, any kind of meat) but leftovers I microwaved (curiosity) water for proofing yeast (I never followed that part of the recipe before) and even bathwater (again, curiosity.)

I gave this thermometer 4 stars instead of 5 because it is very sensitive. Or maybe it is afraid of the dark. You see, I keep it in a drawer. It really, *really* seems to like being used because every time I open that drawer something bumps against it and I hear the little chirp of my thermometer turning on.

Also, one time I heard a very quiet high-pitched sound and it was the thermometer which was on. I had trouble figuring it out at first, but the sound was so persistent that I finally figured it out. So now I am paranoid when I open the drawer and hear the chirp, that it will stay on and make that noise again. ... Read more

Whether you're making eggs Benedict for brunch or egg-salad sandwiches for school lunches, or if you just have a big, hungry family eager for breakfast, this cute device boils or poaches eggs to order and "chirps" when the eggs are cooked. Beneath Henrietta the hen's ample form there's a poaching tray that holds four eggs and a cooking rack that holds seven. Tray, rack, and Henrietta nest on a power base. Pour water into the base to one of three levels for soft-, medium-, or hard-boiled eggs; puncture their big ends with the piercing pin in a separate cooking-rack cavity to prevent shells from cracking; plug in the power base; and steam cooks the eggs. The tray, which requires water at level two, rests on the cooking rack if poached eggs are desired. Afterward, all the hard plastic parts except the power base can go in the dishwasher. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Boiled eggs (but not poached)
This is a very common appliance in Germany, where the traditional breakfast is a softboiled egg and a Kaiser roll with jam and butter, cheese or cold cuts. But it is a nuisance to correctly time eggs to get the right level of "done-ness." This appliance does it just right. As to poaching, none of these egg cookers really poaches an egg; to do that, you need a fry pan with some barely simmering water. Crack the (freshest possible) egg into a saucer and slip under the water. Lift out the cooked egg with a slotted spoon and drain. THAT'S a poached egg. Don't bother doing it any other way.

The principle of operation of an egg cooker is very simple; you put in a measured amount of water based on number of eggs and whether you want soft or hard boiled eggs, pierce the bottom of the eggs to release steam, cover and go. The thermostat in the base detects the temperature spike that happens when the water has boiled off. Presto, eggs are done. Then plunge them in cold water to cool (a good practice for hard boiled eggs as it eliminates the green rim around the yolk.(

While you can make perfectly good eggs on top of the stove in a pot, this is a very handy device if you like plain eggs for breakfast or to make hard boiled eggs for hiking, picnics or sandwiches.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled...
I was partially convinced to buy this unit on the basis of its multiple five-star reviews. After using it a few times, it's pretty clear to me that while an egg cooker is a five star appliance, this is far from a five star egg cooker. It suffers from a number of fairly serious design flaws, one of which thankfully promises to render it useless in a few months.
To begin with, it doesn't have an on/off switch- you turn it on by plugging it in, and turn it off by unplugging it. As long as it's plugged in, the heating element is on. This is awkward, irritating, and potentially dangerous. Its construction is primarily plastic. The instructions say that it should be washed by hand or on the top shelf of the dishwasher. This is because this type of construction is strongly prone to warping. If I liked the unit, this would be a drawback. Fortunately, I don't, and sooner or later this will give me the excuse I need to buy a superior machine. I purchased the machine specifically for making "poached" (actually steamed) eggs, and the heavy plastic of the poaching tray guarantees uneven cooking- if you let the eggs cook until the whites set, the yolks are hard all the way through. If you wait until only the top half of the yolk is cooked, there is still a reservoir of runny white at the bottom. Phooey! When you're shopping for an egg cooker, make sure the poaching tray is thin metal with a non-stick coating. That's what I'm gonna do next time... The method used for measuring cooking time is highly inaccurate, and requires a great deal of experimentation. When I first used the gadget, I had to add additional water three times, and finally ate the eggs in a disgusting semi-liquid state out of impatience. And finally, the chirping noise that is emitted when the eggs are supposedly done is really irritating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henrietta does it again and again
I absolutely love her. She is the best egg cooker in the house. Please do not let the few negative reviews deter you from buying her. I hate to make poached eggs but with henrietta its a whiz. If you use her right and treat her right she will last forever. I have had mine for almost 10 years and she has never failed me. We use her at least once a week.

I just don't know why this cooker has only a three and one half star rating. We use it all the time. It was given to us as a gift and everyone who visits wants one. I have sent many as gifts and now find that it is OUT OF STOCK. How can that be? Is it because people think it is a GADGET? NOT SO! It is a very usable, healthy, and useful item.

PLEASE locate more! We need them for gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
My husband recently ordered Henrietta as a gift for me. I used it for the first time with apprehention as other reviews that I had read were not great. I can say now that it works just fine. The chirping may sound more like a whistle but that doesn't matter-I'm glad that it lets me know when the eggs are done. We live in a town that's above 5,280 ft above sea-level and most things have to cook longer. I was afraid that the centers of the hard-boiled eggs would not be cooked all of the way-they were just fine. Henrietta replaces an Oster egg cooker that I've had for well over 20 years. She works better than the Oster ever did. ... Read more
