For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd bought this grater MONTHS ago!
I purchased this after spending 2 hours zesting limes for a gourmet cookie recipe with the traditional potato-peeler+ food processor method. The most time consuming part is carefully scraping way all the white pith on the inside of the peel. The pith is very bitter and can ruin your recipe. This zester did the same job in 30 seconds and didn't even touch the pith. Just pure, perfect lime zest with no effort. Totally worth its weight in gold. Now I can make those cookies again without my hands cramping up after hours scraping the peels. Who has time for that?

I've also started using it for grating parmesan. Definately takes Ceaser salads and pasta up a notch. I'm purchasing several more as gifts for my friends. Would make an incredible (and cheap) holiday/birthday gift for anyone, even the casual cook. Please note that the size of the grated zest or cheese is very fine and not ideal as a garnish. Parmesan or Romano grated with this tool melts quickly into the pasta, and doesn't lend much to the presentation. Tastes great, but hard to see. If you're looking for a garnishing tool, this is not it.

5-0 out of 5 stars an absolute marvel
This tool takes the place of several little gadgets in my kitchen. I had a little handheld zester that worked fine, but was somewhat difficult in trying to get the maximum amount of zest from a lemon or lime. Not a problem for this tool. A few quick rubs around the fruit, and you have lemon/lime zest confetti.
Grated cheese? This tool gets the cheese so fluffy and light that it melts in no time, and is much easier to use than my traditional grater. I'm a little nervous about using it for things like nutmeg or dried ginger, but that's just because I don't know if it can be done. For anything soft, like fresh ginger, garlic, cheese, zest, this is perfect. The shreds are probably too fine for things like zuccini, so it won't COMPLETELY replace your box grater, but it sure makes fine shredding a lot easier.
The only (MINOR) drawback is that it can be difficult clean, espcially since the pieces can get very small and melt or stick quickly, and the ridges on the underside can capture things and make it difficult to get to them, but aside from that, this is a wonderful product. BETTER than a zester or grater.

5-0 out of 5 stars I must admit that I was a bit skeptical
I resisted buying the microplane grater for quite a while, despite the glowing reviews I was reading everywhere. I finally gave in and wow! I'm not easily impressed by new gadgetry and I already had several graters.

This grater is incredible! I grate a lot of Parmesano Reggiano, and those that use it a lot know that it's a bear to grate. If it's even slightly old, it gets crumbly and it's tough even when super-fresh.

The microplane grater really reduces all hard cheeses to the finest angelhair-like strands with almost no effort at all. I was truly amazed by it.

In my opinion, though, it doesn't work well at all for zesting. If you want to zest citrus, stick with a traditional zester. No matter how careful I am, it always takes off too much pith. I found it didn't work well for grating onion, either. Onion isn't easy to grate in any case, but this reduced it to juice..had to use my fine box grater.

But as I said, for cheese, this grater is the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This is the best kitchen item ever...It works really well, and makes grating & zesting much simpler. I am from Russellville, AR, where the makers of this dandy gadget are from. I can't believe I am from the town that made this great tool, but I am. Good job to them for helping out all cooks everywhere. These are sharp tools though, so don't let the kids play with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow , worth its weight in gold!
I used this recently for an orange sweet bread recipe. It works so effortlessly. I have avoided fresh Lemon and orange peel in the past because grating it was very time consuming. And sometmes you went too deep and added unwanted bitterness to your recipe. The fresh peel tastes sooooo much better and with the microplane it is really easy. I can't wait to try fresh ginger root. This opens a whole new realm of easy and tasty possibilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
Get ready for some serious gushing. You really need this.

It's hard to describe how much better the microplane is than any other cheap, old-fashioned, knuckle-scraping box grater, or even most of the competing "modern" graters. The cheese goes where you want it to, you don't break a sweat, and there's nothing awkward or strenuous about the action. You have the handle in one hand, and the cheese (or what have you) in the other, and you just rub smoothly back and forth. No effort required. This is really one of those kitchen gadgets that makes you wonder where it's been all your life --- I never even stopped to think about how much of a chore grating was until I got one of these. I got one for my mother, grandmother, sister, and mother-in-law, and they're all equally amazed. (Well, maybe not quite as effusive about it as I am, but they really like them)

After two years of owning my microplane, I use it as much as ever. I can't tell you how delightful it is to have effortless grated cheese every time I serve pasta. The construction is solid, and it doesn't dull. One of these days, I'm going to get around to buying the rest of the microplane line -- the zester (which I think is their original product and looks just like a rasp), the spice grater, and the different grades of this style. But for now this does the trick in every situation. I love this thing like I've never loved a kitchen gadget.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Kitchen Hand Appliance!
This is the best grater I have owned, and I am a kitchen wizard (nothing makes me happier than a good day of cooking - well, almost nothing).I have used it for all my holiday cheese grating, and have been surprised at how effortless it is. It saves your fingers unlike the tripod grater or plane graters. The light delicate flakes are great in baking, in salads and as garnish. I'l repeat EFFORTLESS EFFORTLESS EFFORTLESS. I hadn't believed others who said how easy it is to grate with this but they are right! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another rave review...
Microplane also makes a fabulous zester (all cooks know that the words fabulous and zester are contradictory but not so in this case!). Same overall shape as this item but narrower, with smaller holes. The company calls it a grater-zester. Many people who reviewed that item use it for grating cheese as well.

But for me, THIS is the cheese grater. It has any type of cheese begging for mercy in mere seconds, as the grater-zester does with the dreaded citrus, nutmeg, ginger, etc. True, the company says its zester will grate hard cheese -- and THIS grater can also make zest (although larger and coarser than the grater-zester creates).

Both items are well-made, sturdy, easy to hold & balance, and *VERY* sharp. My personal opinion and experience: try both.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect cheese curls

5-0 out of 5 stars Hasn't rusted yet!!!
I bought this grater along with the fine grater about 6 months ago. I LOVE IT!!! It does the job flawlessly. The one thing about which I was concerned was RUST! I have hard water with a lot of iron and sulphur. Other so called "stainless steel" items rusted within months. These 2 graters show absolutely no sign of rusting! They're the real deal! They remain sharp, rust-free, easy to use, and they just so happen to be attractive hanging on my utensil bar! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This grater has no competition!
I've owned this Microplane grater for a year. Grating anything, like carrots or cheese, has always been somewhat of a chore because of the quality of most hand graters. Not anymore. This Microplane grater is a joy to use, exceptionally sharp and keeps its edge. Grating anything is a breeze. I think their background is in shop tools and I am so impressed that they extended their brand expertise to the kitchen. Mind your fingers though!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fine-tastic!
I'm a big fan of Kitchen-Aid quality wares so I was loathe to try this new product from Microplane, but I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised! The grater makes short shrift of ginger, and citrus zest, and copes well with most hard cheeses. It failed the acid test, Brie, but I'll let it off as the pores are very fine. You can use it for grating garlic bulbs over freshly buttered toasted french bread as well, for a potent bite of garlicy goodness. As usual, take care not to slip, because the points are fine, and will easily shred flesh. A very good purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great until you wash in the dishwasher
I loved this item. I purchased from another discount store, (not Amazon). Works fantastic, nice large size for grating orange peal, or other large items. However, after washing in the dishwasher a few times, the handle cracked, and then broke.

Highly recommended if you wash dishes by hand, otherwise stick to the molded handle without the acrylic, (which disintegrated in the dishwasher).

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it!
As you've probably read elsewhere, the Microplane grater was born when a cook discovered how good a carpentry rasp was for zesting. It is indeed a superior tool, well worth the premium price, both in usefulness and in durability (someone I know who cooks all the time is still on her original one, which does NOT have the bells and whistles this one does!) In particular, I now prefer it to my garlic press as it is quick, thorough, and easy to clean. The "pusher attachment" is essential, and will amortize out because you will not stop with just one Microplane once you see how useful it is.

Microplane kitchen graters came into being through a happy accident; a Canadian housewife used her husband's wood rasp to zest some oranges for a cake, and she that its sharp steel edges worked better than any of the standard graters she'd been using.

The Microplane 39005 rotary grater integrates the rasp's sharp steel blades into a safer, more powerful design. Use is simple. A hinged, black plastic handle opens and food may be placed in the hopper.Close the hinge to hold the food in place while keeping fingers safe from the razor-sharp blades. The slight pressure caused by holding the handle closed keeps food in contact with the grating surface. In addition, the grater’s long, curved handle is comfortable for left- or right-handed users.

Each blade drum has its particular strengths: the coarse drum is useful for soft cheese, while the finer drum has a delicate touch for spices such as nutmeg. Nevertheless, either blade works well for chocolate, nuts, or parmesan and other hard cheeses. Both are constructed of 18/8 stainless steel by a photo-etching rather than the typical punch-hole process. The superior result is edges as sharp as tiny knives for superbly-grated food.

Both handle and drums are dishwasher-safe. An enclosed nylon cleaning brush helps remove bits of cheese that might harden under extreme heat. The grater measures 7-1/2 by 5 inches when assembled, and each drum has 12-1/2 square inches of grating surface. A tough, nylon-bristled grater cleaning brush is also included. --Garland Withers ... • Large hopper and long handle for ease of use.
  • Left and right handed
  • Razor-like edges are formed by a totally different process called photo-etching in which holes are dissolved with a chemical, leaving edges that finely slice the food instead of tearing or shredding.
  • Dishwasher safe
  • 18/8 stainless steel blades

5-0 out of 5 stars Great zester! But be careful!!
I have spent hours in my kitchen preparing lemon zest for a catering job, using a traditional garnish zester. But since I bought my Microplane, I have thrown all my other graters and zesters away. This simple little file, that looks like it belongs in a toolbox, not a gadget drawer, is one of the most useful tools in my kitchen. It is an amazing timesaver. Minimalist design makes it seem like a work of modern art. But, a warning for prospective users - if you've ever ground your knuckles into a box grater, be careful on this tool. I looked away from my work for one second and ended up grating down to the bone on the second knuckle on my index finger. This baby is sharp!! Really sharp!! Until they make Kevlar knuckle guards, pay attention to what you're zesting. I use it all the time, but I have a cautious respect for it now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but use with caution
The Microplane line of zesters and graters is worth every dime. It has made life much easier. The design is effecient in all cases and easy to maintain at home without much fuss. Because of its stainless steel nature it does not acquire odors either -- though do wash it after garlic/onion to be safe.

This particular model, however, should be used with a certain amount of caution because there is NO handle. One must grip this thing carefully. The folded edges of metal along the side can be grepped though it is a small area. It can also 'fit' over a large bowl but you must have something to anchor it properly or it slips. Which is why it gets a 4star instead of 5 like the others.

The other models such as the cheese grater model, does a good job with fruit zest as well and for those who don't want too much thinking about scraped knuckles it has a comfortable rubber/plastic handle that is easy to grip.

On the cooking front -- because of the ease and quality of the zest one is getting from these microplane zesters some adjustment in the amount of zest in recipe maybe called for. Your orange or lemon shortbread cookies will have extra kick from the same amount of zest (You have a finer, more surface area amount available).

Get a microplane zester and you will never go back. Matter of fact you will be tossing out your other zesters and graters.

4-0 out of 5 stars great kitchen tool
This is a must have! It grates lemon peel (among other things!) with ease. It's a great time saver too. Easy to clean, but a warning since this model has no handle; it's very sharp and can be awkward to handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microplane for Maxi+results!
I was actually shocked by how well this zester worked when I first tried it because of all of the negative comments about how it will cut your hand off, etc.

It works effortlessly and is therefore very easy to hold. Just grip the sides, rub it over the fruit, and the zest practically falls off. The best thing is that it removes only zest, 100% of the pulp is left behind. Unbelievable!

The Microplane makes very fine zest that disappears into your recipe, so there is no chopping up zest-like strings as with my old Henckels zester (which is now just a bad memory).

4-0 out of 5 stars Ouchie..
Be careful with this one - there isn't a handle so it's easy to scrape those knuckles! I've done it a few times, until I got the handled version. It works GREAT though, I highly recommend it (or spend a couple bucks more and get the next version up which is even better!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get one!
After seeing this grater being used on all the cooking shows, I had to get one. It immediately became one of my "top shelf" kitchen gadgets. If you love grating fresh cheese over your pasta (or any dish, for that matter), or if you like using fresh citrus zest in your cooking, this grater is for you. Also fantastic for using freshly grated nutmeg and cinnamon in baked goods. Throw that jar of pre-ground stuff away, because you'll never go back to it.
As far as being messy at the table, just hold it at an angle, use a firm grip and don't use the entire grating surface. It's very easy to get the hang of directing the piles of fluffy cheese exactly where you want them.
As far as I'm concerned, this gadget is a MUST.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful addition to your Microplane collection
Makes getting that last bit of cheese/chocolate/ginger/etc grated so easy without putting your fingertips at risk. If you own the standard (35000 series) Microplane graters, this is a must-have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best for ginger, nutmeg and the tail end of cheeses...
This may be worth having for a limited number of tasks. I use this primarily for grating smaller pieces ginger and nutmeg.

The two-piece design of this attachment makes cleaning it easy. However, that same two piece design also makes using it clumsy. You must use the same hand to adjust the pressure against the grater while simultaneously moving the attachment back and forth over the surface of the grater.

DOWNSIDE: This attachment won't let you use that last little nub of nutmeg. The "plunger" portion doesn't go down far enough.

COMMENTS:
1. If well-turned out nails (polish, acrylic nails, etc.) are part of your lifestyle, you probably will want to use this attachment for a lot more tasks than than I do.
2. As an add-on to an initial purchase, this isn't a bad idea.
3. Note that this attachment is designed to use only with certain models.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Safety's Sake....Buy this Attachment!
The Microplane graters are an absolute must-have in any kitchen. Cheese simply disappears into fluffy mounds within seconds. BUT...the sharpness of the blades creates a potential safety hazard. If your fingers come into contact with the blades, count on receiving a nasty cut. The slider attachment is a small price to pay for security.

Hard cheeses and nutmeg are very easy to grate with the attachment although as a previous reviewer noted, you must use small chunks. The results will impress you. Soft cheeses however, are a little harder to grate. The cheese tends to mash against the blade unless you apply the right amount of pressure and keep up a steady grating motion. It will however, produce finely shredded cheese.

That is a mere quibble with the attachment. It will 'complete' your Microplane grater set and you can confidently and safely use this remarkable product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent accessory for excellent graters
If I had to find a complaint regarding Microplane's fine series of graters, it would be that they are so effective that a small slip of the hand can result in a painful cut. This excellent accessory takes care of that issue by providing a slider that holds whatever food or spice you're grating against whichever Microplane model you prefer (coarse, fine, ribbon, etc.)

The slider also makes grating spices like nutmeg much easier as it provides a handle of sorts to hold the small spice kernels against the Microplane's grater surface. My only problem with the slider is that it's fairly small and thus requires cheeses to be cut into small chunks, but that's a minor complaint.

If you own one of the 35000 series graters from Microplane, you should consider this slider attachment a required item for your kitchen. ... Read more

Unlike most graters in which the cutting edges are formed by punching holes through stainless steel or tin, the Microplane grater's tiny razor-like edges are formed through a process of photo-etching (in which holes are dissolved with a chemical), leaving edges that finely slice the food instead of tearing or shredding. Made from surgical grade 18/8 stainless steel; the spice grater has a santoprene handle. Dishwasher safe.

The handle, constructed of durable black plastic, contours to the hand for a comfortable hold, and features an open loop providing the option of hanging storage. This long, slender tool makes fast work of grinding up those rock-hard chunks of fresh nutmeg. The sturdy plastic handle makes it easy to grip, while the razor-sharp stainless-steel blades do the hard work. As always with a sharp grater, be careful to keep your fingers clear--safety can be especially challenging when you're working with those slippery little spices. The Microplane spice grater also works well on nuts, dried hot peppers, ginger, and anything particularly tough or fibrous. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Add some spice to your life!
This handy little gadget will not only save time but will also save your finger tips from certain injury! A spice grater is a must for those who cook with nutmeg, cinnamom sticks, and even pepper corns. Though a coffee mill may seem an east way to grind these often you need a more controlled grate as opposed to pulverizing the spices. This is where this gadget works best. The handle is also excellent and easy to grip which is important as this is certainly small work. In the end just throw it in your dishwasher and the work is done simply and easily! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Less versatile and more difficult to clean
The Microplane line of kitchen products has evolved over the past couple of years. This two way grater has:

* AN ALL-METAL FRAME--makes it awesomely durable for heavy duty use. For grating lots of carrots as additions to ground meat or to soups, this grater is tops.
* A RUBBER REST OPPOSITE THE HANDLE--makes it ergonomically more efficient, since you can rest the end on a cutting board or in a bowl, allowing you to use more pressure.
* A PROTECTIVE SHIELD FOR THE GRATING SURFACE--makes it easier to store safely.
* TWO-WAY GRATING--makes it faster, since cutting edges face both ways.

DOWNSIDE: Two way grating means that this grater is inherently less safe. Now you can cut yourself both ways! Also, unless you're "grating" something that melts under hot water, such as butter or chocolate, this two way cutting feature makes this model harder to clean: Bits of carrot or apple stuck between the "blades" cannot be removed by running your fingers the opposite direction from the cutting edge. A wooden toothpick or an old toothbrush (brush from side to side, not top to bottom) will do the trick.

BOTTOM LINE: This may well have a valued place in your kitchen, but it isn't the first one to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars We'd give it 10 stars if you had 'em, lol
We're definitely ordering this RIGHT NOW after trying one at a friend's house [unfortunately she paid A LOT more for it than the price I paid fabulous price].
Beats us how a company can make a perfect product even better, but Microplane managed it :::
[1] We already have 3 different 'original' design flat graters (purchased here & all still available, I believe). The 'originals' -- basically one-way grating -- still seem best to us for unusually hard things (e.g. nutmeg) or otherwise fairly difficult ones (e.g. fresh ginger).
[2] For THIS newer two-way design, we'd say the description given in the product entry here is right on. It's ideal for somewhat softer foods, especially those you normally wouldn't even consider grating -- yikes, like a stick of butter?! This thing is so fast & efficient that butter-chocolate-soft cheese-etc barely has time enough to go all icky-gooey on ya. SUPER for obtaining taste with *serious* portion control if you're on one of those hideous physician-mandated restricted-everything diets, as we are.
[3] The nicest feature of this newer design is that little extension opposite the handle. Makes it easier to rest the grater flat on the edge of a bowl or a vertical-rimmed plate when using it.
[4] Bottom line: in our opinion & experience, any or ALL of the Microplane flat graters are just plain NECESSITIES, not luxuries, for every kitchen. ... Read more
