Amazon.com Review

Powered by a 350-watt motor, this classic blender blendsmargaritas and smoothies, mixes soups and sauces, chops fruits andvegetables, grinds coffee beans and nuts, grates cheese and coconut, and crushes ice. The blender has a high speed and a low-speed pulsecontrol, which can be held down for continuous action. Its 40-ounce,ribbed-and-tapered glass container fits onto Oster's distinctivebeehive-shaped base, which is clad in lustrous chrome and outfittedwith slip-proof rubber feet. Its stainless-steel blade-assembly removesfor cleaning, and the container is calibrated in both ounces andliters. Fully assembled, the blender stands 16 inches high on a7-1/4-inch-diameter base. With the exception of the dishwasher-safeglass container, all parts--including the plastic lid with its plastic2-ounce measuring insert--require hand washing. The blender carries aone-year warranty against defects, and its instruction booklet includesdozens of recipes. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Smoothies
I live by the beach and have a serious smoothie addiction. I've burned through two blenders making my morning smoothies and realized I needed to upgrade to a more "substantial" blender. After looking online and doing some comparing, I chose the Oster 4093-8O Classic Chrome Beehive Blender.

Oh my goodness, what a difference a good blender makes! My new Oster chops through ice and frozen fruit in no time flat and blends it into a nice frothy mix. Ice has always jammed the blades in my previous blenders. But with the Oster, there is no jamming. Just nice quick chopping.

I also love that this blender is retro looking. The Chrome Beehive base is so cool that I leave the blender out on the counter for all to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4th time's the charm
I've burned through 3 other brands of blenders -- each time the plastic "spinner" in the motor base (which mates to a plastic spinner in the pitcher's base that turns the blade) broke. Finally we decided to try out the Oster "Classic" because it uses a metal shaft that fits directly into the pitcher's base to turn the blades rather than the plastic disks that all the newer blender designs seem to use. That does the trick. I make a lot of fruit smoothies using frozen fruit -- which can be pretty hard on blenders -- but so far the Oster Classic has been up to the task. I highly recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars **DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BLENDER**
Alas, my search for a blender that -isn't- a piece of junk continues! I had a Waring for a couple years, and in those 2 years, the motor burned out twice. The second time I sent it back, UPS broke it, so I used the claim money to escape Waring's clutches, and bought the Osterizer Beehive Blender.

It arrived in the mail 2 days ago. Yesterday morning I made my first (and, coincidentally, last) smoothie with it. It was GREAT! I loved it! It crushed the ice and pulverized the frozen fruit, and the 500 watts stirred it up so I didn't have to use a spoon. I was happy, and intended to go write a 5-star review on Amazon.

But then, this morning, I wake up and try to make another one. I pulse it a few times to break up the ice, then turn it to "ON". It sounds fine. I flip it to off, then pulse, and when I flipped it back to "ON", it didn't work. No smoke, no burning odors, no grinding noises, no chugging, no struggling, just...stopped working.

I suppose, if your particular assembly works for more than a few days, then it'd be a great blender. But, come on! If you can't make a blender that works more than once, well, what business do you have making blenders?

Folks, unless you're in the market for a one-time-use blender, I suggest you keep on looking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid but noisy performance
Like many of us, I turned to Consumer Reports to guide me in the search for a blender. The choice seemed obvious, but after reading some of the Amazon reviews, I could hardly reconcile the top ratings of CR with the thrashings that 'laypeople' gave it.

In fact, most of the top choices by CR were reviewed very poorly here. I know you can't trust everything you read, but it was almost impossible to find a blender that didn't have a number of major complaints.

In the end, I went with the Oster because my girlfriend's mom had hers for over thirty years and it still worked like a champ. After several months of near daily use, I can say the following:

Bad - noisy; the glass flutes make a great place for powders to get stuck and not dissolve; not so easy to clean them

Good - strong motor; two speeds are fine (I almost never use the high speed because it goes from noisy to screaming banshee); decent looking.

What can I say? This blender continues to serve me well. It was reasonably priced and been very reliable. I would give it five stars except for the noise.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great... while it lasted
I thought I'd finally found the perfect blender, and it worked great - for two months. I used the blender exclusively for smoothies, usually made with chunks of frozen banana, OJ, and yogurt. I was careful to make sure the blender was running and there was plenty of juice in the jar, but the "all metal drive" broke - there is actually a hard rubber coupling beneath the drive spindle, and it sheared right off. Oh well - on to the next blender! I also have to agree with other reviewers about the noise - this puppy will wake the dead! Don't plan on making midnight snacks with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Champion of the Blender Wars
After reading some 100+ blender reviews I purchased this classic blender. The metal drive was certainly a deciding factor, good looks notwithstanding. But even more decisive were the claims that this is an ice crushing monster.

And guess what? It IS. I used the Oster in a side by side comparison test with the Cuisinart 7-speed Smart Blender in a ice-off. The beehive made a much more frothy pina colada. The Cuisinart had to blend longer in order to pulverise the ice, which it finally did, but it definitely struggled. The Oster immediately chewed up the ice cubes. These are both 500 watt blenders, sufficiently powerful and up the to task, but the Oster is the clear winner.

This particular Cuisinart is also chrome and very handsome and it has a very nice large glass beaker, but the Oster can't be beat for price and performance. SO..........if you're out there researching and reading about the blender wars, this is another vote of confidence for a classic machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate
What an incredible blender! I picked up the Oster 2-speed Beehive Chrome Blender (500-watt edition) after researching blenders online. The 30-some positive reviews it received on multiple websites had me sold, and of course, its overall look was a deciding factor. Its shiny base adds eye candy to your kitchen, and looks like something you'd find in a 50's jukebox cafe.

When I had Oster's Beehive out of the box, assembly took less than a minute - it was a complete cinch. In the center of the rubber top, there's a small plastic circle that pops in and out, so you can add ingredients from that space, without having to remove the whole top. Additionally, the base is solid and sturdy, so you can be sure it won't tip over and create a mess.

I bought the blender for making cold, refreshing smoothies on hot summer days, but was a bit skeptical it would be able to handle frozen strawberries / ice cubes. Any worry I once had was diminished the first time I used it. This machine crushed the ice completely, along with the strawberries, and resulted in one smooth, delicious, ice cold smoothie! It was one of the best I've ever had.

If you're looking for a heavy-duty, all-business blender, with a powerful motor that'll crush even the toughest ice cube, the Oster Beehive 2-Speed Chrome Blender is the blender for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blend and Go Cup for Smoothies
I used the new Oster Blend and Go cup with this blender and couldn't be happier. The cup fits right on the blender instead of the jar and is perfect for making my morning smoothie. I blend my smoothie right in the cup and take it with me to the gym. It's GREAT!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worked once, then quit!
I bought this blender because it was stylish, yet inexpensive. It worked very well the first time I used it. The next time, it wouldn't power up at all. I guess the motor just died. I was very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loud, but a superb, quick blender!
Yes, the Oster Beehive is loud. However, it is not ear-splitting, and it completes the job in 1/10 the time a "quiet" blender takes, so overall, you are getting superb value. I've used mine for a month now, and it is excellent. I can do a smoothie in 5 seconds! I replaced a truly horrible Hamilton Beach 54224, since it failed after three uses (mayonaise and two smoothies, none of which came out well). DON'T BUY HAMILTON BEACH PRODUCTS! Every one I've ever owned has been garbage. The Oster, on the other hand, works like a champ and only cost a few dollars more. Highly recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is my first breadmaker...
...so I don't have a true basis of comparison against other machines. However, I did my homework and bought a machine with the features I wanted in the price range I could afford. I've had the machine about 3 weeks, and have made about 15 loaves of bread. So far I have had fairly good outcomes, however, most loaves collapse. I have tried adjusting the ingredients as I have read in the book that came with the machine and on several websites, but there seems no rhyme or reason as to why the tops to cave in. Raisin bread came out great twice, and I made a loaf of Country White that didn't collapse. Other than that, every loaf sank, but I must say that even though they weren't exactly attractive, they tasted good. They weren't "bricks," they were just flat on top. I am not going to give up; I enjoy using the machine, I am an experienced breadmaker, and I know how to find and use resources. I believe I will be successful.

As for the machine itself, I find it easy to use and to clean. So far I have had no problems with the machine itself, only the recipes. (That's what I believe, anyway... I don't think it's the machine causing the tops to cave in, but the ratio of ingredients.) I could recommend it for anyone who has the time to stay with the machine and adjust the ingredients while the dough kneads. I haven't tried the delay timer or the ExpressBake features, as I thought it best to keep an eye on things while I'm still a breadmachine beginner.

By the way, this model appears to be exactly the same as the Oster 5838, but they call it Inspire and only sell it through Target stores.

1-0 out of 5 stars big mistake
I was the proud owner of a wonderful Oster bread machine which produced bread that would rival the best of breads. Although the bread was next to perfect, the machine was incapable of making a 58 min. loaf. There was no question that in purchasing a new breadmaker, I would first turn to Oster because I was so pleased for so many years. I purchased the Oster Expressbake machine and it was a horrible mistake. The machine doesn't mix the dough well, pieces of unmixed dough clings to the crust, the consistency of the bread is mealy and the crust is extremely tough. I am in the process of trying to return the machine. As for my old machine, alas it got so busy mixing dough that it took a dive off the counter top and had to be put to rest. My heart is broken, but I don't think I can replace such a dear old friend because I don't think that bread machines are being made the same way today.<br />

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine, great results
We have been using this gem for many, many loaves of bread. It far surpasses our first "Welbilt" brand breadmaker we used to its 'bitter end'.

5-0 out of 5 stars it works well...
I have this machine for one month and have used it four times and it works well. English is not my primary language so I am very careful when measuring the ingredients and I am also using a digital scale... so far no problems, the bread tastes good and I am happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it
This is my first bread machine and I love it. I made pizza crust & 2 white breads, they turned out great, If someone is looking for a bread machine I would recommend this 100%. It make bread quick up to 1hr. or longer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I'm a breadmaker
I've had my Oster for over two months now. I wanted to give it a good trial before offering my opinion. After researching the net about bread machines, I knew a practical person could expect some trial and error with any bread-baking endeavor. I didn't anticipate I would hit a home run my first few times out and I didn't. My personal goal was the *tastiest, healthiest bread recipe ever* for sandwiches and toast. (So, please keep in mind, I haven't tried any other kind of bread, in case you are looking for another viewpoint). It seemed to me that the recipe was the key and it took maybe four less-than-stellar loaves before my research led me to my dream recipe. Every week since, I've batted .1000.

Once you have a good recipe, this machine couldn't be more enjoyable or easier. I can't give it a higher recommendation.

I have one suggestion that differs from most directions you will ever see. If you are seeking a fabulous whole wheat loaf, use the regular cycle. Add a couple tablespoons of vital wheat gluten and use the regular cycle.

Bottom line: I love my Oster. If it was practical, I'd make you some toast right now.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not mix well
I'm sorry I can't recommend this machine. It simply doesn't mix the ingredients well. For raisin bread, most of the raisins wound up stuck to the outside bottom of the loaf, and several raisins were simply lying loose and burnt in the bottom of the pan. When making whole wheat bread, I had to continually scrape the flour from the side of the pan while the machine was mixing so that it would be included in the dough ball. Even then, not all the flower was picked up in the dough ball. I've used a bread machine for several years, so I'm pretty experienced at this. I would pass this one by, folks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Steer Clear of This Machine!
I had an old WellBilt bread machine, probably ten years old, that made perfect bread nearly every time. The only thing I really disliked about it was the round loaf pan, so this Oster caught my attention.

I've only had it a week, but in that time I've attempted to bake four loaves of bread, and none of the four have turned out well. Two collapsed, and one never really got off the ground since so much of the flour stuck in the corners of the rectangular pan.

I plan to return it this week and hopefully find something that will work better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful
I've had my breadmaker for a couple of weeks and i couldn't part with it.I have made some of the most delicious bread, and pizza crust, and dinner rolls.I'am looking forward to trying the jam recipes next.Very easy to use,and compact.

3-0 out of 5 stars Oster Bread Maker Review
Well, I am from Bombay India and probably the only member of my family that was as excited about getting a new bread maker at home for that Fresh smelling bread. I managed to get an Oster
breadmker last month. The only drawback I have is that here in
Bombay we dont get readymade flour for the bread. So I have to
get the flour, salt, sugar, butter, yeast and mix them in the pan.
I have tried baking a whole wheat bread 5 times. The 1st 3 times it was a total mess. The 4/5th time I got a very good looking bread which was perfect to eat while it was hot but became a rock hard WEAPON once it became cold the next morning.
Could someone please tell me where am I going wrong with the
Whole Wheat? I have followed exact instructions from the OSTER
manual.

The white bread was a great success all times but I mixed and matched the ingredients as per my own intuition and DID NOT
follow the book.

Lariv ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My new favorite toy...
I saw this steamer in an ad in Runner's World and just had to have it. Since going on the South Beach Diet, I've upped my intake of eggs, fish, chicken, and vegetables tremendously. And because I live an extremely active lifestyle, I never have time to wait for things to thaw before cooking. I was defrosting frozen meat and nuking scrambled eggs and frozen vegetables in the microwave everyday when I did some reading and found out that microwaving destroys over 90% of the healthy vitamins and nutrients in foods. Researchers have found that steaming is the best way to preserve nutrients if you have to cook a food.

This steamer gets the job done better than I'd ever hoped. While it does take a little longer to cook with steam than in the microwave or on the stovetop (add 5-15 minutes of cook time), it is a more hassle-free way to prepare food. You don't have to constantly check your food to see if its burning or stir it. No more exploding eggs in the microwave or rice stuck to the bottom of the pan. Just load it up, set the timer, and leave it to cook. For example, I stuck a couple of frozen chicken breasts and a cup of brown rice in, set for 45 minutes, and left to do something else. Halfway through I poured in frozen vegetables and seasoned the chicken and rice. The chicken cooked through perfectly, the vegetables were tender, and the rice was perfect. Hard boiled eggs are easy too.

Clean up afterwards was a breeze. The plastic containers are easy to wash off, but the drip pan fills up quickly and when full is hard to get to the sink to pour out without spilling. Cooking directions and times are approximate, so there is some trial and error involved. But since I love it so far, I will definitely be using it several times a week and get lots of practice. I highly recommend. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Looks great..but too complicated
I find that this toaster oven is to complicated. You have to leave it on max and work everything through the timer. Then to toast you have to turn past 15 minutes, and back to the desired
doneness. I also don't like the fact that the outside gets very very hot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Instructions for Toasting
This is the largest capacity toaster oven I've seen in this price range, which greatly increases its versatility; it also has two shelves that can be arranged in different ways. So far, the one thing I do not like about it is that "on" and "off" are controlled through the timer. Not only is this a somewhat confusing extra step, but timers are notorious for being the first thing to wear out. Whether this is a problem or not remains (at least a decade, I hope) to be seen. Another reviewer lacked an instruction book and asked for the directions for toasting. For most toasting, use the bottom rack in the "up" position. Turn the temperature control knob to "Max." Turn the function selector knob to "Toast." (Both the top and bottom heater elements will operate.) Turn the timer knob past 15 minutes and return it to the desired setting (for bread, I'd recommend starting with no more than 2-4 minutes and taking it from there).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Oven - Lousy toaster
Dont like the toaster function. Sometimes great sometimes poor Oven has worked flawlessly, frozen pies et al.

1-0 out of 5 stars cut hand on broiler pan
Problems -
1. very sharp holes on broiler pan - sliced my thumb up badly
2. brief, inadequate users manual
3. door doesn't stay open at one inch increment for broiling as directions indicate
4. racks hard to manuever
5. plastic melting smell
6. toast takes 4 minutes +
7. Only used it for a fews days - so no more complaints!

Pluses
1. removable crumb tray

5-0 out of 5 stars i eat toast.
I bought this toaster oven for my dad for his birthday, and I'm registered for one for my club wedd registry. The oven is big enough to toast or heat just about anything, and it really helps out when our regular oven is busy. It can do all the functions of a normal oven, but it keeps the kitchen cooler during Florida summers. In response to the other review, here's how you toast: Turn the temperature dial to the hottest temperature. Turn the function to toast. Turn the timer past the twenty minute mark and then turn it BACK to the two pictures of toast or the desired time you want to toast. It's not hard at all! This is a great toaster oven! And it looks really nice too! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars OK if you want a cheap blender, but you get what you pay for
I bought this blender a couple of years ago, and still use it because its all I've got. I want to upgrade! I use it about once every 2 weeks. It is fine for the most basic uses, but honestly all those buttons are joke - horrible to keep clean, and there is no difference between any of the speeds. And the food doesn't drop down properly, only the stuff at the bottom gets blended. And if there isn't lots of liquid in there, it doesn't blend at all. I would not recommend it to anyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Blender
My parents still have an Oster blender that's 30 years old and still works perfectly. But Oster blenders nowadays come with cheap motors that smoke the first time they run for more than 15 seconds and burn out on either the first or second batch of daquiries. Maybe it's because Osters are now made in Mexico; I don't know. What I do know is that I will never waste good money on an Oster blender again. The most recent replacement blender Oster sent me burned out five minutes ago, and you can bet I'm p.o.'d. I don't want another replacement - I want my money back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Blender
This is the best blender I have ever purchased. AND it is not noisy at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Blender - Fair Price
I have used this blender as a "second blender" for about 5 years now.

The reason for all the noise? (glad you asked!) All metal mechanics and sturdy glass jar. Which are also the reasons this machine will last and last.

My only complaints are it takes longer to "liquify" ice (for smoothies or icy drinks) and it seems a little top heavy.

I received a KitchenAid blender as a gift and it does the job much faster, more quietly and a little more effectively.

The KitchenAid also has a stainless steel jar which keeps frozen drinks colder, longer.

I like both of these units, but my suggestion is to spend a little more and get the KitchenAid.

All considered you really can't go wrong with this unit.

Keep Cooking!

3-0 out of 5 stars TOO LOUD!
My main criticism of this blender is that it is entirely TOO LOUD. Even on the very lowest of the 12 settings, the noise this thing puts out is intolerable, and entirely unacceptable. It is extremely loud, and it makes me not want to use the thing. And actually, I'm going to return it without ever blending anything in it. My other complaint is that the blender jar wabbles in the base too much. This is not what I expected from Oster. ... Read more
