5-0 out of 5 stars Best Buy / Excellent Product
Wow! I received my sewing machine and am in complete awe at the price and quality of this machine. I haven't sewn in 20 years and can't believe how easy this machine is to use. Just take a few minutes to read the manual and you're set to go. The problem solving information was super helpful too. I have shopped around for a while and had an old Singer years ago, so I initially thought I'd go with a Singer model, but Boy! am I glad I didn't!!! This model is very sturdy and the quality is worth much more than this price. Within 2 hours I had set up the machine, read the manual, hemmed a pair of curtains, made a fleece throw and fixed a zipper in a pair of pants!!! I love the needle threader. I am so pelased with this machine that I'm telling everyone I know. If I can use this machine this quickly and successfully... anyone can!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine especially if you are a beginner
I have never really sewed anything in my life, except for a brief home ec. class in Junior High some 30 years ago. I always wanted to try to sew but I was too intimidated. Finally I saw this machine with its reviews and thought I would take a chance. It came in only a few days, and in an hour I was sewing my first skirt. It is very easy to operate. The bobbin fell out of the case, and I had no trouble understading how to put everthing back in place. The instructions are very easy to understand. I am having the most fun learning this wonderful new skill on this machine. It is very user friendly. If you ever wanted to learn to sew but thought it was much too complicated, then this is the machine for you. With all the new fabrics, technology, and things that are available along with this machine, sewing is a great recreational activity. My only regret is that I waited so long to try it. This machine, the Simplicity sewing book for beginners, and the Simplicity web site is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine!
I've owned this machine for under a week...and as a beginning sewer, I'm very impressed. Easy to use, easy to understand manual...so far two thumbs up!

3-0 out of 5 stars I've had fun...
but I've also been so frustrated I wanted to throw the thing against the wall! I had no previous experience sewing and needed a bit more than the manual supplied to get started. So after learning the very basics elsewhere (Sew Fast, Sew Easy- a great book) I use the Simplicity manual all the time and do like it. I have made handbags, pj's, fleece jackets, skirts, dresses, etc. without problem.

HOWEVER: At one point, and this may have been my fault, the machine completely stopped working, the entire shuttle race became damaged and I had to send it in for repairs. But this was completely covered by the warrenty so all I paid was $20 to ship it out (Simplicity paid return shipping- nice). And I should mention that I was emailing a customer service rep. at Simplicity for quite sometime about this issue and she was very helpful and timely.

HOWEVER #2: The so-called one-step buttonhole is making me one-step away from a nervous breakdown. I've tried it 1,000 times (Ok, 100) and at this point I am using snaps and velcro because I simply cannot deal with the stress anymore. So, I've already sent it in after 4 months of ownership once and now am considering it again.

But assuming that all the other "little things" that have frustrated me have been because of my lack of sewing skills, I do like this machine. Well, maybe I just like sewing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does the job but not a great machine...
I am a sewist with intermediate sewing skills, and I recieved this machine as a gift.
This machine made me think that maybe I can't sew afterall. But when I got my new machine (a different brand) It all came back to me that I can sew like a pro!
This gets great reviews here but if you notice they are mostly from beginners, inexperienced sewists, or first time machine owners, or someone teaching a child to sew.
I recommend going to a sewing machine dealer and test-driving other machines/brands if you are considering getting this one. See what else is out there, you will be surprised! Never buy a machine based on written reviews only expecially if it doesnt belong to the top brands. Its important to be able to feel and listen to the machine while its working, then you'll be able to tell how smooth and powerful it is.
This machine does the job but if you intend to quilt a lot or sell your sewing projects, I do not recommend this machine. I get a lot of towelling and uneven stiches.

It is so hard to piece quilts because the fabric has to be directly under the presser foot for it to take the fabric in so you have to go back and forth to fix your stiches, otherwise it will unravel later and you'll end up with uneven peices.
The bobbin keeps jamming and you have to take the thing apart to get access to the bobbin. My husband would often catch me with smoke coming out of my ears and a bunch of thread laying on the floor. It was so exasperating! The machines that have top loading bobbins and are jam-proof are so much more easier and you might want to check those out. I recommend looking at the White, Janome, Brother or if you want the higher-end machines, look at Elna, Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking. Once you use these machines you can never go back!
Did you know that the Vikings doesnt require oiling ever?
Another thing is the oiling part. I just hate all the gunk that can get on your sewing projects and fabric after you oil the machine, the smell of oil, and it gets so dirty because dust fabric particles from the fabric sticks to the oil.
Thes machine doesn't feel very sturdy and the plastic casing seems cheap. You can tell just by listening to the motor that its is a flimsy machine. On top of that, it is so unattractive.
I agree that its a great machine for a beginner, for a child learning how to sew, and for this price.
To me a sewing machine is something that should last you a lot of years and can offer room for growth so I suggest investing a little bit more money and research into it.
If you are a beginner and intend to learn on this machine on your own, I would not recommend this machine. It just might curb your enthusiasm to sew. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

For home tailoring, quilting, and detailed sewing, the Quik Press is a dream. While a handheld iron has its place, the large 9-by-22-inch padded surface of this tabletop unit presses more fabric at once, making it ideal for professionally setting pleats, gathers, and pant leg creases, as well as fusing interfacing. The tapered end neatly shapes contoured sleeves and darts, while the hole-free nonstick metal shoe plate makes appliqués and heat transfers a crafter’s delight. A temperature dial and pressure selector--either 50 or 100 pounds--lets the press smooth everything from delicate nylon to wrinkle-prone linen. An automatic shutoff adds safety, and the nonstick cotton cover conveniently removes for washing. The long handle keeps hands away from hot surfaces and locks shut when finished, making the press easy to carry to sewing circles. Since the press uses dry heat, a spray bottle is included for misting fabrics when desired. The press measures 23 by 20 by 8-1/2 inches, and is covered by a one-year warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding for quilters
As an avid quilter, this press has made pressing my quilt squares and design pieces a snap. It cuts my pressing time in half and holds my seams for piece quilting like a dream. I would recommend this NON steam press to all quilters. There is never any worry about water spots or leakage on your fabric. And when pressing my everyday shirts and pants, I have the option of the spritz spray bottle that is included if necessary. I found that the tempature control works exceptional for any fabric or clothing attire that I pressed. I will definitely tell all the members of my sewing guild about the many wonders of the Simplicity SP100 press. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazon sells the best!
I bought this machine from another dealer and bought it factory serviced(because it was cheaper and came with some extras). I hade problems with the factory serviced machine and ended up paying much more in the end. I have never had a problem with a factory serviced item from Amazon so I thought factory serviced from another company would have the same quality. I would suggest that you buy new like the one they have listed here. The machine is very easy to use. The video is very simple to follow. I watched the video and completed my first project in a matter of minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart Box
I meant to put this on the Smart Box Review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not So Bad, considering.
Sure it's the bottom of the line in embroidery software and you do get what you pay for but it does work. The trick is to spend time in a drawing or photo program manipulating the image before running it through this program since this program doesn't provide for any flexibility. Garbage in, garbage out as they used to say.

So far I've only been working with single color images. I've had luck with photographs manipulated into extreme high contrast. What photographers refer to as Kodalith, after a sheet film used in lithography. You can see some examples at emilbacilla.com if you're interested.

Someday I hope to get a "real" embroidery digitising program that allows you to manipulate the actual stitches. In the meantime this program does the job, albiet primitively.

The disk of images that come with it is a joke. Most of the images are animated .Gifs and are useless for embroidery. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
I recently bought this so I could make some window treatments and things for around the house. I had not sewn since Home-Ec class in junior high. This machine is easy to use and works well. it even has a buttonhole function. Directions on how to thread the machine and wind the bobbin are fairly easy to understand although I did have to read them a couple of times since I was unfamiliar with sewing.

4-0 out of 5 stars purrrfect for the price
I recomended my sister purchase this machine for my 10 yr old niece. It was a price she could afford (she has 4 kids) The machine is at my house because I teach the girls sewing. altho it is a little basic for my taste(thats why I gave it 4 stars) it is still a very good machine. My niece can thread it herself, very important to me, and sews very well. My niece loves it and that is whats important, expecially the A and the heart on the front of the machine (her name starts with A) It is the cutest machine in our sewing area! Believe me thats important to young girls. My sis chose the supersaver shiping-FREE-and the darn thing came in sooner than my grandaughter's machine that I paid for! lol I paid for shiping because my daughter's machine seemed to take forever to get here (did not purchase it from amazon-only because it was no longer availible..she has the singer izek) Anyway to sum it up...great machine, great price, recieved it in great condition...IN THREE DAYS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but it will have to do.
I had expressed an interest in a sewing machine to do some small sewing projects, not wanting too much for gadets and fancy stiches. I have worked on two projects now and have not found the right tensions or something because it is not sewing well. The stitches are not tight, it is jamming, threads getting caught underneath in the bobbin casing, and threads breaking. The instructions for stitches are well described, and does all the stitches I will need for simple dresses and clothing. Maybe it is just user error, but a friend and I sat down with the machine in order to give me some lessons and she was not able to help me fix my problems very well, so we switched and used her machine. I will keep with it for awhile and see if I can work out my problems, but think I may be returning it for something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy for Beginners
I am basically a beginning sewer and I purchased this machine about a month ago.
The instructions are very clear, detailed, and easy to follow.
I have used this machine for quite a few craft projects already and it seems to work fine.
I think it is a great machine for the $$ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy-to-use sewing machine for everyone
This is a very good sewing machine for its price. It is quiet, sturdy, and comes with extremely detailed instructions. You have to play around with it at first to see how the stitch widths, lengths, tension, and style works, but after fiddling with it for about half an hour I was able to sew a few things, without any problems. The lower bobbin is easy to load and the machine itself is very easy to thread. It does blind hem, which is very important to me, but also does many decorative stitches, as well. (It even does buttonholes!) If you're looking for a good, serviceable machine that doesn't cost too much, try this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners but not Flawless
I bought this machine as a beginner and was very pleased with its performance, and its price. I have had a few issues with skipped stitches but the manual is actually pretty good at troubleshooting. This machine has a very short basting stitch, which can get annoying. I have only recently begun to think of upgrading as I am starting to sew heavier fabrics, like heavy denim and vinyl, and leather everynow and again. Even with appropriate needles for those thicker fabrics, the Simplicity struggles a bit - its just a tiny bit too small (the engine anyway) to handle it. But overall I've been pleased, and if you want to sew regular clothing or do some mending or craft work, or you are just beginning to sew and want a "starter" machine, I would definitely recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and quiet
I had never used a sewing machine before, and decided to try this model. The directions are so simple (there are step by step Pictures of threading and making a bobbin)and all the extra stuff is in this little box on the front of the machine. It comes with a piece of fabric with the different stiches demonstrated, which was a big help. It is easy to carry and not near as loud as I expected. You will be sent three free patterens of your choice as well. I am pleased with mine and would reccomend it for a beginer or experenced sewer (everyone need something easy!) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Designed.
This machine is horribly designed. In a prior review the customer stated that the machine runs but the needle stays put. The reason for this is a tiny little screw inside the plastic of the handwheel. The screw is responsible for engaging the clutch, but is encased in plastic. The torque cracks the plastic and eventually causes it to stop working. Bad design, I don't suggest purchasing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Work
I was excited when I received the machine, but it just does'nt work!!! The motor runs, but the needle does'nt move up and down. I'm very disappointed that I have to return it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delighted
Very impressed with 3-day delivery. Portability of machine (13 lbs) and simplicity of design functions are exactly what I wanted for a backup machine. Paper piecing is easy and accurate. I did have a problem trying to place the bobbins on the wind-up spool. Really had to force them into place. My husband thought the noise when I stitched a little distracting so I solved this by placing it on a typewriter mat. ... Read more

If you have an embroidery sewing machine, this Smart Box kit from Simplicity will greatly expand your design capabilities. After plugging the Smart Box directly into your computer and installing the software, the memory card will be ready to receive a variety of designs directly from your hard drive, floppy drive, or CD. The card is then inserted directly into the sewing machine. The Smart Box does not digitize clip art or graphic files ending in .bmp, .wmf, or .jpg; separate software (available from Simplicity) is required for that. If it all sounds confusing, don’t worry: the user guide walks you through each step of the process with clear instructions and illustrations. Computer requirements are: Pentium II processor, 16 MB RAM, CD-ROM drive, 5 MB of hard drive space, Windows 98 or above, an 800 X 600 display or better, and a USB port. The Smart Box is not Macintosh-compatible. The memory card works with the following machine models: BabyLock ESI/ESI2/EM1/EM2/eac/Ellageo 1/2/3; Bernina Deco 500/600; Brother PE150/100/200/300S/7500/ 8200/8500/6500, ULT/2002D; Simplicity SE1/SE2/SE3; White W3300. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pleased with Simplicity Smart Box
I am pleased with the Smart Box. I now am able to download over 6,000 patterns on the internet and don't have to buy all those little cards. There are several sites that have free downloads. The greatest on is "AnnTheGran Designes". I did not have any problem with it working (especially, when you read the directions correctly). I haven't tried copying designs off the CD's you can buy but I've just had it for about two weeks. Will do that soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars smart box update
I have a Brother PE150 and the smart box at first I had problems with it recognizing design done with PE Design 3.0 and up . I wentto the amaxing box upgrades and did the usb upgrade and problem solved I love my smartbox its easier to use than a friend of mine that has PE Design. I use it with windows Me and xp with no problems after the upgrade

3-0 out of 5 stars Not So Smart Box
I purchased the Simplicity Smart Box 11 months ago and have not been thrilled as the product is utterly unreliable when used with Win XP.

I use the Smart box as a reader/writer on my 1.4Ghz P4 computer to transfer designs to my White 3300 embroidery machine. (The White 3300 machine is the same as the Brother PE-150, Bernina Deco 600, and the Simplicity S3 machines.) The box is connected to my P4 computer via a USB cable and came with software to operate the box and basic color editing software.

The problem with the Smart box is that the Smart Box driver has a software compatibility problem with XP. For some reason XP doesn't always recognize that the Smart Box is connected to my computer. After speaking with the Smart box tech support (which is run by the Amazing Box tech support) on three separate occassions, I learned that whenever my computer fails to recognize my Smart Box I have to do the following: unplug the Smart Box from the computer, place the Smart Box software in the CD-Rom, restart the computer, and after a successful boot up of my computer, plug the Smart Box back in.

Usually this procedure works; however, that is not a guarantee. Sometimes this procedure is completed multiple times. Btw, I'm on my second Smart Box and it comes with a one year warranty.

Basically, I'm one unhappy camper about this product and now wish that I'd purchased the alternative reader/writer which is the Vikant Ultimate. ... Read more
