Amazon.com Review

By projecting a tight "beam" of air across a room, thislightweight, portable heater gently blankets the entire room in warmth. The vortex-action beam forces air towards the room's perimeter, thusheating the entire room, floor to ceiling, wall to wall. Quiet andcompact, the heater measures just 12 inches high, 12 inches wide, and10 inches deep. Two heat outputs (1,500 watts on high, 750 watts onlow) and a variable heat control provide precise temperature control. Two fan settings permit a choice of continuous action or cycling on andoff with the heating element, which is controlled by a thermostat thatautomatically turns the heater on and off to maintain a selectedtemperature. All controls are mounted on the heater's top for easyaccess.

Several features ensure safety: a nonglowing heating element mounted tononflammable mica, automatic shutoff if the unit tips over oroverheats, and a cool-touch cabinet. Because the heater has angledvents, it can be placed with its back close to the wall. Finally, theheater can be set in antifreeze mode, turning on only if a room'stemperature falls below 40 degrees F. The heater carries a one-yearwarranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 5 for heating, 1 for reliability
I have bipolar feelings about this heater. On the one hand, it is a fantastic heater that effectively warms a room, and has an automatic thermostat that really works. In terms of heating, it's great.

On the other hand the design is almost ridiculously flimsy. The first one we had broke entirely within a week of use (thank goodness for Amazon.com's easy return policy). The second one has given us a lot of good heat, but the on-off switch broke after about six weeks. I can make it work through this strange gerrymandered solution, but now it sparks, in a frightening way.

If it weren't so scary, it would be a joke. Like the type of heater you'd use to warm a haunted house.

In all I can not recommend this product. Its a great heater, but its unreliable, and well, actually sort of terrifying.

3-0 out of 5 stars It Works, But Be Patient
It's very important not to get confused (as I suspect some reviewers have been) between two very similar Vortex models, the VH2 and the DVH. The DVH does indeed break almost instantly and should be avoided. This model, the VH2, on the other hand, is perfectly adequate for the price. No small electric heater in this price range is going to do a great job of quickly heating a large drafty room on an extremely cold day, but the VH2 does a find job. You will have to be patient however: it will take several hours to notice much of an effect in large dining room or kitchen. But if you wait, you will find that the VH2 gets the job done (and is quiet as well).

3-0 out of 5 stars Danger!? Read all the reviews!
I wish I'd read the reviews! I just got two of these. The vortex thing is very real. I don't know all this fluidics stuff, but even with the almost-inaudible fan (must not be broken yet), they project a beam of air many feet. Stirs up the room nicely, and makes sure 90% of your electric bill isn't being spent on keeping the mounted moose head over the mantlepiece toasty warm while you freeze.

{Later} Hmm! Just read Levien's review. I wonder if that explains the earlier reports of breakage. Anyway, I'm using two of these things as of a few days ago, and I love them to pieces (until they go defective, if they do). I'm going to treat them as extremely fragile and avoid any intentional jarring. I looked in through the cracks after reading the bad reviews, and I don't care for the construction.

1-0 out of 5 stars 3 Stricks, it's out!
My excitement at getting a top of the line Vornado for my office quickly turned to gloom when the first one sounded like a mac truck was driving through the room. Back to the store for a replacement only to come home and find that on the second Vornado the fan didn't work. Once again back to the store, but this time I asked that we try it before I headed home -- only to find the Vornado didn't turn on at all! Before I could say a word the salesperson recomended I give up and buy something else. What a waste of time and for a lot of money!

Cold toes and hot spots disappear with this powerful but quietspace heater that evenly blankets an entire room in heat. The sleek black polymer case measures 12 by 12 by 9 inches, andbecause it contains no glowing metal elements, does not get hot to thetouch. Air intake vents on the sides allow the heater to be placeddirectly against a wall. Plug in, warm up, and rest easy with aone-year warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the 1 star reviews dissuade you...
I recently moved into a house that had an exceptional heating system except in the master bedroom (probably due to a large French door). Didn't see the logic in heating the whole empty house just to keep one room warm, I started to look for a suitable heater. Upon some search, Vornado DVH surfaced as a viable option. Although pricier than other models, if it did what it claims to do (even warmth, quietness, safe to kids' touch, and good control) I thought the product would be ideal for my family needs.

While searching for the best price, I came to read the ratings by others on the Amazon site, and it was disturbing for me to see that there was a noticeable disparity among the raters (please look through the reviews and see for yourselves-5 to 1 star). But it sounded great at least for those who had them in working condition, so I decided to give it a try, knowing that there is a chance that I might get the bad apple.

Well, I have been using the unit for a while now and I have to tell you that it is worth MORE than its weight in gold!!! It is quite; temperature control is dead accurate; heating is impressively even throughout the room; and it really doesn't get hot at all to the touch; and even looks cool. I have occasional circuit breaker tripping when I use hair drier in the bathroom connected to the same room, but Vornado has not tripped the circuit not even once, even though I usually have it run at 78F when I use it (basically all night).

I'm sure others' claims on defective products are valid. But if you are unsure whether to give it a try because of those reviews like I was a few weeks ago, I strongly recommend you give this product a try. Even if you end up with a defective product like others claim, if you can get a good one after exchange (and get something like what I got), it is worth the trouble-and believe me I'm an extremely lazy person when it comes to product exchanges...

I only write this review because I wished that I had something like this to help my decision making. Hope it helps you.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's hard to believe how well this heater works...
We just moved into a house with a 300+ square foot sun room that is unheated except through a couple of windows and a door through to the house. It was very cold in this room initially, so much so that you couldn't do anything in winter without additional heating. So I thought I'd try a DVH heater to see if it would do the job rather than either ducting into the room or installing baseboard heat. When I got the unit, I was extremely skeptical. It's very small and it's very light, and it doesn't look like it will do anything at all. Well, it's just above zero outside as I write this, and I'm in my sun room that is evenly heated to 70 degrees. And I saved hundreds of dollars over the alternatives.

(I purchased the DVH over any other unit because it has a temperature control in degrees, while most [all] other similar units make you guess instead of setting the exact temperature.)

In addition to heating the room, it is also so quiet that I can have it sitting right next to me without it bothering me in the least. And the cord and the unit stay cool, which is a big consideration with our two little dogs running into it. You can actually put your hand against the front of the heater when it's going full blast on high power and it's only warm, not hot.

The controls are simple also. You press the power switch, set the temperature that you want, and then select whether to use high or low power. And then you're done, you just turn it on or off from that point forward. It then displays the power setting, the room temperature, and the desired temperature continually on the top of the unit.

Obviously, I'm very happy with the DVH and I highly recommend it to anyone. I do want to add that it would probably have taken two of the units to completely heat the room to a continuous 70 degrees if it was totally unheated, but it's still much better than the alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quiet & Reliable
Use this fan / heater 3 to 5 hours daily for an approx 475 sq foot area. It works awesome quiet and hassle free.

5-0 out of 5 stars I bought two more after liking the first so well
I've read the various reviews. I can't comment on the experience of other people, but here's mine. I have a bathroom that can be quite chilly, and I thought I'd see if a Vornado would help. It did. In fact, I liked it so well, that I bought one for my elderly parents, who tend to be cold almost all the time. They use it regularly, both in their TV room, and in the bathroom. It's quite light and easy to transport, so they do. THEN I decided to take my bathroom Vornado to work, since we had some "thermostat wars" going on and my office would suddenly turn frigid because someone else was too warm. It worked again. So I bought a third for the bathroom. Nary a problem. It's quiet. It heats smoothly and circulates the heat as claimed. As a result the room gets gently warmer, not the three feet of space in front of the heater. With three units purchased at different times, I would think I would have come across one of the defective ones that others have complained about, but I have not had that happen to me. I am very pleased.

1-0 out of 5 stars Heater was well below expectations
I originally went to the store to buy another Vornado heater that received good reviews on Amazon, however the store only had the DVH in stock and it was on sale, so I went with the DVH, I was excited about bringing it home to heat the living room when I watched TV and my bedroom at night. Well I tested the unit last night in my bedroom ( about 150-200sqft) and it was very disapointing. I live in CA and the temp in my house is around 60 degrees between Dec-Feb, I wanted a heater to heat up my bedroom at night so I could sleep comfortably and I place it in in the bathroom in the morning so I can get out of the shower and not freeze to death. This unit's performance was horrible! I set the DVH on High and set the temp to 72 degrees before I went to sleep, throughout the night the room still felt cold, in the morning I looked at the DVH and it states that the room temp was around 63 degrees! The heater hardly changed the temp of the room the whole night! I then adjusted the temp to 90 degrees and placed the unit in the bathroom, by the end of my shower the room temp was only registering 65 degrees!! I left it on for another hour to test and when I came back the room temp hardly changed, maybe only by a few degrees!!...the heat coming from the DVH was not that hot and the fan did not seem that strong. Needless to say I am returning this heater today! It seems that the quality control at Vornado is not consistent on this heater, some people rave about this heater, yet many others have similar negative experiences like mine. I would recommend staying away from this heater and spend your hard earned money on something better! Hope this review helps! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Super effecient Vornado
I live in a very poorly insulated apartment in Buffalo, NY. I purchased a vornado heater due to the draft in my bedroom. After using the vornado I was amazed at how even the heat is distributed compared to electric quartz heaters and such. The room felt like it was heated by various points around the room. The automatic shutoff is nice to have so the room doesn't get too warm at night. My gas bills are much lower and my feet are much toastier!!! ... Read more

Product Description

Rated "Best All Around Heater" by Good Housekeeping Magazine, the Vornado IntelliTemp Heater is equipped with a variable output control that generates the right amount of heat, maintaining comfort automatically so you don't have to spend time changing it yourself. The specially-designed vortex circulation gently and quietly warms the entire room, not just parts of it, with its deep-pitched propeller and its circulatory action that sends warm air outwards, upwards and downwards, making it one of the most efficient heaters, both heat-wise and money-wise. The cabinet and the tightly-curved spirals are cool to the touch, and in the event the heater tips over or if the airflow becomes blocked, the unit shuts itself off, a peace-of-mind safety feature you'll appreciate. Sleek and compact, the heater has no metal parts to rattle, dent or loosen; its flat back lets you place it near the wall so it's never in the way. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Manufacturer NOT a good one to deal with
I bought 2 of these heaters in 2002.They were recalled for a over heating problem (Amazon was VERY GOOD in notification). I returned the heaters per instructions, one was returned withno problems. The other one is a different story. Its control panel was not put on right so it went back again.Last year it over heated and blew out the outlet, back it went, just got it back yesterday and the control panel was not installed (just set in place so it came loose as soon as you touched it). When we contacted them the service person was not very understanding. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BRAND

OLD REVIEW

Like some of you, we went through many many store bought space heaters with disappointing results. The worst were Honeywell products which I suggest you avoid.

The beauty of this item is severalfold.
1. It is effective at heating our baby's room which is about 10x15' with high arched ceilings. Impressive for a heater as small as this one is.
2. It is quiet.
3. It has a thermostat feature which works well. You will have to calibrate it to a level that is comfortable for you, and then mark that level so you can dial to it when needed. The heater has to be set to Fan speed: high, and Temp: auto, for the thermostat to work.
4. It is safe. The fan is well enclosed to prevent prying fingers from getting inside, although we still unplug it and move it out during the daytime.
We have owned it for almost 2 years. We run it about every night in the fall and winter in our kid's room and so far the only thing of note is the thermostat knob can be pulled off (but is easily put back on). We would purchase this item again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attractive, Vesatile, and Functional Heater / Table Fan!
I bought this from Amazon over a year ago, and its seen all seasons so far in Indiana. The house I live in has many temperature extremes due to the occupants.I needed something to serve as a buffer. When the heat is cranked up too hot in the winter, I use it as a fan. When someone goes wild with the A/C in the summertime, I use a little heat.

In the past, I've bought every space heater imaginable.Oil filled radiators, reflector quartz heaters, ugly, big gray box with heater coil fan, mini box ceramic heaters, and cheap, small plastic fan heaters (always seem too flimsy I'm afraid they can fall over). Every one of those had its downside. The radiating models were not dual function, many of the fan models too small or dangerous, or had no "fan only" switch! This Vornado solved all that.I run it on 750 most of the time and it heats a large room just fine. The dial thermostat is accurate and maintains the temperature better (within a finer range) than the main house heater. The heater itself is on a solid, wide base, that doesn't give you the impression it would fall over, like some heaters.

The features are nice simple and functional, a huge red toggle, lights up when the unit is on, so you can tell from a distance. Two rocker switches for fan speed and high / low heater, and a simple dial thermostat.Turn the thermostat off and you have a nice fan.One that can replace a good table fan, few other space heaters out there can make that claim.I'm relatively sure this unit would not last too long on high heat, trying to heat a cold garage, or something similar. It wasn't made for that, but if you want to heat a room or an office its great.

I understand they replaced this with a much more expensive digital model, still many places sell refurbished and even some new heaters of this model. If your an apartment dweller, a student in a dorm, or just like to keep the bedroom warm at night. Then this may be the heater for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a hot time in the old town tonight.
Even though it cost 3-4 times what I'm used to paying for space heaters, my lack of success with a couple of cheap Holmes models (the safety fuses kept blowing out, rendering the units useless and disposable) led me to invest in this one. At first I was suspicious of this plastic, lightweight successor to the heavy metal, tank-like construction of the Vornado that lasted my aunt so long. Not to worry. This understated overachiever performs reliably and effectively if quietly and unobtrusively. Its presence is so low key, in fact, that it's easy to forget about it and discount its contributions to creature comfort. And I've observed no problems related to over heating.

If your pleasure is sitting directly in front of the heater and basking in its warmth, the Vornado may not be for you.Don't expect it to blow you away or to light your fuse the instant you plug it in.Like my cat, it's quiet and slow to warm up, but once it does, it really purrs. In fact, even the cat should be happy, because the fan's superior circulation insures transmission of heat to all corners of a modest-sized room. Moreover, the thermostat on this model, unlike others I've owned, is both functional and useful. And not least of all, my cat hasn't found a way to sleep on its sphere-shaped surface.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good investment
I own this product and a sister product (Vornado fan) and I think both are excellent. The heater isn't warm to the touch, its fan is strong yet quiet (good for circulating the air), and the machine is small and light. FYI, the fan must be placed on the floor (not on elevated surfaces like a table or desk). The vornado heater is much better than the small ceramic space heaters. I highly recommend it. ...
