Amazon.com Review

There are lots of fancy cookware materials out there but cast iron still trumps them all with its even heating, heat retention, price, and duration. It’s these traits that make Lodge cookware favored by both indoor chefs and campfire cooks alike. The caveat is being able to lift cast iron cookware and, at 8 pounds, this serving pot will give most chefs a workout. The pot measures 8 inches in diameter and 2-7/8 inches deep and comes with a matching 8-inch iron cover. The pot arrives ready to simmer up to 2 quarts of baked beans, soup, or stew and goes right from stovetop to tabletop for serving.

While it usually takes years of cooking to burn on the prized finish that makes cast-iron cookware smooth and stick-free, the Logic line of cookware comes pre-seasoned to save you some work. Cast iron pots in this line are coated in a vegetable oil, which is then baked on in a hot industrial oven to obtain that blackened patina and silky surface. Logic cookware has plenty of fans, including the editorial staff at Good Housekeeping, who cited it as one of the best new products of the year at the 2003 Good Buy Awards. --Cristina Vaamonde ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Handy little pot!
This would be a great pot to subsitute for a dutch oven for a single person or couple because of it's smaller size. We are a family of 4 and it is the perfect size for side dishes like baked beans also. When you don't need the bigger 5 quart dutch oven, this pan gets the job done. As always, LOVE the pre-seansoning! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars My wife hates it when i cook with this thing...
Always a greasy stove top mess to clean up after using this thing, even with a splatter screen... it's not really big enough to fry a big batch either... it comes with a nice thermometer but it's clip doesn't fit the edge of the pot.. it seems to fit best in the hole in the small open handle opposite the big handle.. I've got a ton of Lodge stuff and this is my least favorite piece. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lodge Fish Pan is bigger than standard oven
At first I was thrilled with the pan.
Looked nice and big. Big enough to poach a whole salmon, which is what I had in mind when I ordered it.
Then, we tried to season the pan, as you must all cast iron cookware.
The process calls for one hour in the oven aftere coating with oil.
I was amazed to find the pan is too big to fit in the oven.
So, I'll get creative and season it on the grill when the snow stops. But, I'll never enjoyh any roasts or oven baked fish or any other dishes in this pan which require the oven.
If that's what you have in mind, better have a commercial sized oven. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cast Iron Grill -MADE in the USA for Charcoal Lovers
Just got the Logic 410 today and fired it up to cook a few hot dogs. Got great grill bars across the dogs and rolls which I don't get from my weber one touch. Also, nothing stuck to the grill, not even the rolls that I toasted. The grill stayed hot for a long time after I removed the remaining lit coals. The Grill's appearance is good, no rough spots, overall a good finish to all parts. I like to barbeque with the indirect method on the weber so the L410 is my venture into grilling and so far it is off to a good start. Hopefully my lodge camp dutch oven will come soon....

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little grill! Will last a life-time
If you are sick and tired of the aluminum 'wanna-be' grills you will like this little grill. Convenient to clean and made to last a life-time this is not the flimsy piece of junk usually sold for a small grill. Small enough to fit anywhere yet still large enough to cook a couple large steaks or a full package of hot-dogs. The only negative--which is also a positive-is this is a HEAVY little bugger...you won't want to lug it up a mountain that is for sure. Has built in drain/ash sweep area, no flimy wooden handles on the grill plate-solid through and through. Perfect for a base camp, table-top picnic grill area, put in the trunk of your car, or just a small patio. This will be the last one you will ever need to buy-PERFECT little grill. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very handy size for small altars
Strictly speaking this is not a "caldron" -- a caldron should have an opening narrower than its belly, or so I've been told. Nonetheless this is a very good size for use on personal or portable altars. Placed on a tile it's safe to burn charcoal blocks in, and the price is excellent. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

On stovetop or outdoor grill, this 10-ounce, cast-iron pot can be usedto melt butter or cheese, to scald milk, and to warm syrup or basting sauce.Because cast iron is unmatched for heat retention and distribution, all of thesetasks can be accomplished without fear of scorching. The pot is 4-1/2 inches indiameter by 2-1/2 inches deep. It weighs 3 pounds, must be seasoned with meltedshortening and then baked, and needs to be coated with oil or cooking sprayafter each use to prevent rust. Cast iron's weight and care requirements put offsome cooks, but, as has been known since the Middle Ages, cast iron permitsprecise baking and flavor-retentive cooking, has a natural nonstick finish whenseasoned, and lasts for generations (thereby increasing its value). As itblackens with use, cast iron imparts to food a mystical aura of rustic nourishment and flavor.--Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT little pot!!
Have bought other small (T-Fal & Faberware) pans but this is the only one durable enough to withstand the grill. Quite handy for other small warm-ups outside and in. Very charming and rustic. A total delight to have around and an essential part of any kitchen. Great price, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a handy little pan!
This is such a handy little pan! It's just the right size for melting butter, warming syrup, or keeping basting sauce hot on the grill when you cook out. And cast iron can't be beat for durability and ease of cleaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Lodge Winner
This little pan is perfect for melting chocolate or butter. It is great for making a sauce or small amount of gravy. Like all Lodge products it is very well made and a delight to use. You cannot go wrong with this product if you season it correctly when new.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Grill Accessory
Living on the coast of Maine, summer means seafood on the barbie. Whether you are steaming clams or grilling lobster, butter is an essential. This little pot is perfect for keeping warm butter at your fingertips. It's also the perfect size for basting roasted corn-on-the-cob. The little pour spout is a nice touch for avoiding spills. I picked this up as soon as I came across it and have enjoyed it many times. You will have to treat it differently in terms of seasoning and care but it will last you a lifetime (and probably your kids' lives as well).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the little things...
...like melting butter or warming spaghetti sauce. For a quick breakfast, throw an egg in one of these and cook some toast. I have had a stockpot for years, but when cooking for yourself a 5qt pot isn't too practical (unless you like leftovers). Most of my meals get cooked using this pot and the 10" skillet. They heat up quick, are naturally non-stick, virtually indestructible, and CHEAP! Yes, they do require a bit of special treatment, but they are worth it. You will not regret getting cast-iron cookware. Just don't drop it on your foot! Enjoy!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Cast iron is one of those materials true kitchen aficionados love. It gets better with age and seasoning, won't warp or chip, and keeps food warmer longer. Put your seafood, veggies, hushpuppies, or beignets (French doughnuts--they're heavenly) in the fry basket, then lower into the fry pot. Just remember that cast iron is very heavy--this pot weighs 7 pounds--which is why there's a looped handle on the opposite side to help you lift the pot (use a hot pad). The pot has two pour spouts, and the kit includes a 5-inch thermometer that goes up to 400 degrees F. In general, you'll want to hand wash the pot with just hot water. However, prior to first use and occasionally thereafter, you should season it by washing it with a little soap, oiling it inside and out, and cooking it in the oven for an hour. The finish will soon turn black--the sign of a well-seasoned cast-iron pot. --Doree Armstrong

5-0 out of 5 stars Works really well
A solid product & an excellent value. I was using an all clad pan for deep frying until I got the lodge pan and the basket. There's a huge improvement in the quality of fries & fritters I make now. The cast iron pan keeps the oil at a more constant temperature, the heating is uniform and the frying is even. I highly recommend this product. For larger families, the size may be a problem as others have mentioned.
This one also comes with the thermometer even though the product description does not mention it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fryer if you use it correctly
For those chefs among us who either can't afford to have a built-in countertop deep-fryer, or for whom it would be impractical, the Lodge cast-iron deep fryer is a worthy and effective substitute. This is a great device, provided you use it properly. There are three essential rules to follow to achieve successful deep-frying. Though they are not complex, they are incredibly important, and failure to follow them will lead to less than satisfactory results:

1. USE THE RIGHT OIL - For deep-frying, I prefer canola oil, which has a lower fat content and higher burn point than other oils, although some chefs sometimes use peanut or safflower. Leave at least three inches of room at the top when filling the pot with oil, because it will foam up when you drop food in to fry.

2. FRY AT THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE - This means using a thermometer, which Lodge has conveniently included with the frying kit. You cannot fry successfully without a thermometer. It is obviously impossible to know what the oil temperature is without one, and for great deep-frying results, you want the oil to be in the 350-375 F range.

3. GET THE BATTER RIGHT - If you're making fish & chips, fritters or other goodies that involve batters, it becomes key to make the batter properly - not too watery, but not too thick, either. This sometimes involves some trial and error, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be able make fish & chips as good as in the restaurants.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lodge Quality
This pot is another quality Lodge product and works well if it is seasoned correctly. It is easy to clean and works as heavy cast iron should. It is a bit small and would get 5 stars if it were 3.5 quarts. Well-worth the money, however and useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Takes forever to heat up. Heavy, hard to clean & store.
I didn't get much enjoyment out of this kit despite its pretty good quality. Because it's so heavy, it maintains temperature well (very important for frying), but wow it takes a really long time to heat up. And if you put in a frying thermometer (very important), it gets in the way of the frying basket. And if you want to store the oil to fry more a bit later, there's no cover for storing it right in the pot.

In addition, you may be concerned about the safety issues about frying in an open-topped pot with no thermostat -- in which case, get an electric fryer.

Lodge cast iron products are wonderful, but this just isn't the best way to handle the relatively touchy task of deep frying. If you want to do a lot of frying, seriously consider an electric fryer instead of this kit. And if you want to do just a little, use a regular heavy pan or a wok, with a strainer-on-a-handle tool to pull things out and drain them.

In addition I should note that the "Good Eats" program on the Food Network (a cable television network) specifically recommends against frying in cast iron -- they say it tends to make the oil go bad sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice but too small to feed a family on fried fish.
This pan is great if you are single (or maybe a couple) but its too small for a family. (Get either the chicken fryer or the combo pan (my personal favorite) if you feed more people.

On the plus side, its nice and deep. Don't need to fill it to the top, as the food will displace some of the oil and yet it won't splatter as much as a shallower pan. So for a small fry job you'll save a lot of oil.

Cast iron is the material of choice for fat frying. Holds the heat, cleans easily, etc. The basket is handy as is the thermometer. As has been noted you can do the food in batches, keeping it warm in the oven until its all done. But you'll lose some of the cripness while you are waiting.

And you could use it as a plain old sauce pan. This is a handy size for heating soup etc. (No lid though, but I bet a good hardware store would carry a glass one that will fit. You might even find one elsewhere on this site.) ... Read more
