Amazon.com Review

A definite teatime icebreaker, this cup- and saucer-set features scaly, reptile skin illustrations by renowned Italian artist Antonio Riello. Each cup/saucer pair in this 6-piece set features a different slithering graphic in tan, brown, yellow, red, green, and gray for a truly striking and chic effect. A thick handle snakes around the sipper's finger up to a white rim. Made in Italy, each of the six pieces in this limited edition set is signed by Riello and numbered. The set is hand crafted of durable porcelain, and it comes packaged in a decorative, round tin box. Hand washing is recommended. --Brian Olson ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Each piece with a different colored background and a different motif; this set of 6 cups and saucers offers 36 different combinations for just the right teatime mood. Getting away from the standard white, each piece in this set features a unique and striking background color. Pleasantly drifting from convention even further, each cup and each saucer's orchid motif is of a different taxonomy as well. Mixed and contrasting hues of blue, violet, tan, yellow, red, brown, and black are tied in with a vibrant orchid theme. Some orchids are in full bloom; others are in the bud. Designed by artist Francesco Illy who has chosen flowers as one of three main studies, this cup and saucer set captures the orchid's essence with true artistry. --Brian Olson ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

When he invites artists to collaborate in creating porcelainware, Italian designer Francesco normally wishes to amuse and delight, to create a mood that excites appetite and provokes conversation. With this espresso set, however, his artist-collaborator, Andrea Manetti, seeks to inspire contemplation, as she draws on classical religious icons to depict life's irony. "All saints here," one cup says, ambiguously referring either to the innocents depicted on the cup or to us, the espresso drinkers--or to both? Is it sarcasm, plea, or declaration?

The limited-edition "Jubilaeum" (Anniversary) set presents six finely glazed espresso cups bearing Manetti's paintings--which include gold leaf, accounting for the price--along with six white saucers. As usual, designer Francesco packs his gleaming porcelain in a tin case (13-1/2 inches in diameter by 5-1/4 inches high for this set) that, among other suggested uses, can be employed used as a stool (black cotton, foam-filled pillow included). A photograph on the lid shows a young girl sticking out her tongue. ("FrancisFrancis!" cries the despairing parent.) An impish phrase, Poi ti spiego ("I'll explain later"), is printed on the case, along with the story behind it. The artwork, including the gold leaf, is virtually indestructible, and the espresso set is dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack ... Read more

With regard to the review by the customer who was disappointed by not being able to get practical use out of them because of their size: This is a set of ESPRESSO cups. An espresso serving is around 1.5 ounces, and which fills the cup about half way. This means these type of cups would only hold under a quarter of a cup, even filled to the rim. These cups are from a series of artist-designed expresso sets which are produced by the company FrancisFrancis! which specializes in funky, artistic, designer espresso machines.

If you've familiar with FrancisFrancis' design philosophy, and have sprung for a beautiful X1, you already know that you need to find a set of this series to put on top :)

These cups don't deserve a "4" because a customer didn't know what they were buying. This is very much a 5-star item.

4-0 out of 5 stars gorgeous, but not what i was looking for.
I ordered these cups thinking that I would get some practical use out of them, not realizing how small they are. The are not big enough to be used as teacups. They are large enough to serve espresso only.
However, that does not mean that I was disappointed in their quality. The are exceptionally well crafted and the colors are gorgeous. The pictures posted by Amazon don't capture the vibrant colors or the attention to detail.
... If you are an espresso drinker or you enjoy quirky collectables, then these cups are definately for you! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

A buoyant philosophy elevates FrancisFrancis! dinnerware above the commonplace. "Love and treat the child within you." That's what Italian designer Francesco has in mind when he invites artists to collaborate in creating place settings. Francesco wishes to delight, to create a mood that excites appetite and provokes conversation. He starts with a colorful tin packing case (13-1/2 inches in diameter by 9 inches high for this set) that, among other suggested uses, can be employed as a stool (black cotton, foam-filled pillow included). A photograph on the lid shows a young girl sticking out her tongue. ("FrancisFrancis!" cries the despairing parent.) An impish phrase, Poi ti spiego ("I'll explain later"), is printed on the case, along with the story behind it. Inside is durable, finely glazed, gleaming porcelain dinnerware.

This limited-edition set, signed by the artist, is a single place setting for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's called Strappi ("Strips") because Roberta Pietrobelli created the elegant design by arranging torn pieces of paper, which she renders on the plates in striking black and off-white colors. (A more expensive black-and-off-white Strappi design with gold-leaf accents can be mixed and matched with this version.) High-temperature glazing creates a three-dimensional, tactile effect. The set's contents: 12-inch black service plate with white design; 10-5/8-inch off-white dinner plate with black design; 8-7/8-inch off-white rimmed pasta bowl with black design; 8-1/2-inch off-white dessert plate with black scallops; 8-1/8-inch off-white soup bowl with black design; and off-white coffee and espresso cups and saucers, all with black designs. The artwork is virtually indestructible, and the dinnerware is dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack ... Read more
