Amazon.com Review

From the Le Creuset Accessories line comes this whistling kettle made of enamel-coated carbon steel, suitable for use on virtually all cooking surfaces (gas, electric, radiant ceramic). The heavyweight metal conducts heat evenly across the bottom and up the sides of the kettle, quickly heating water for a pot of tea. The tight-fitting lid and locking handle let you pour without the risk of scalding your knuckles with hot steam. And this kettle, like all other Le Creuset products, is a bright and colorful addition to your kitchen. --Schuyler Ingle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whistling Tea Kettle
For years I searched for a tea kettle that was: 1) easy to clean (mineral deposits); 2) held a good quantity of water; and 3) an appealing (and loud) whistle. I went through a number of tea kettles that fit the first two criteria, but had worthless whistle (i.e., I couldn't hear it in another room - which translates into I ended up destroying numerous kettles by boiling them dry/burning them up.

The beauty of this Le Creauset tea kettle is that it's enameled interior and sizable opening makes for easy cleaning of any mineral deposits. It holds plenty of water for a big pot of hot tea or coffee. And it's got a great whistle, which I can hear all over the house.

There is one design fault with this tea kettle in that the spout joins the body rather low, so that if you overfill it it will boil over and put out a gas flame. However, because it works so well in all other ways, I still give it a five star rating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Color not what I expected
I was looking for a really red kettle - this one is red to orange, with some brown at the bottom. Not what you'd expect looking at the picture. I've read the reviews, as well, and see that you don't want to leave water standing in it for long periods. Not sure it's worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars This comes with INSTRUCTIONS
I registered on-line for one of these when I was getting married because it is so pretty, but (luckily) never received it. So when I saw it on sale at Williams Sonoma last month, I bought one for me and one for my mom. I took them over to her house and unpacked one kettle so I could make her some tea. The kettle never saw the bottom of the burner after I read directions such as (paraphrasing begins here):

1) Never fill the kettle past marked line or splattering of boiling water may occur.

2) Never leave water in the kettle or it will be ruined.

Mom's and my thoughts on the matter went roughly like this:

Marked line? You mean where the color changes? 1/3 of the
way up the side? It's the only line I see...You mean to
tell me I can't make a whole pot of tea without using this
kettle at least twice???

and

Geeez...I don't want to have to remember to carefully dry
my teakettle after EVERY use!

These were not the only instructions, as I recall, simply the most irksome. I think these are reasonable things to "gripe" about, as one reviewer put it. I would only recommend this kettle as a lovely decoration for a movie set, or for a very fastidious solo tea drinker. Needless to say, I returned both kettles I purchased and got two OXO brushed stainless uplift kettles instead (which mom and I both love so far).

1-0 out of 5 stars Mine rusted, too
I received the kettle as a gift--and it ought to have lasted a lifetime. It did not. As other reviewers have noted, the inside of the kettle rusts and cracks within months. I only wish I had kept track of the warranty; it broke my heart to put the kettle in the trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars I want my money back
I was really excited to get my first le creuset kitchenware, but only to be very disappointed - the kettle started showing rust on the inside within two months which rendered it completely unusable. I felt awfully cheated, and especially so because I had bought it at a very reputable gourmet cooking store in san francisco!

My advice - steer clear of enamelware and buy stainless for durability. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars attractive, but useless
i adore le creuset, but this tea kettle was a monumental disappointment. as other reviewers have noted, it rusted within months of purchasing it. (however, i admittedly had no problems with burns from the handle or removing the whistle to pour.) i can't imagine what a person would need to do in order to prevent the rusting, aside from never actually using the kettle. i was seriously let down by this purchase, since it looked so beautiful but ended up being so useless.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rust, Rust, Rust!
This kettle heats water as good as any of them, but don't dare leave water in it for any time at all.Even with fairly regular emptying, this overpriced kettle started to show rust inside within a couple of months.Buy Stainless!

4-0 out of 5 stars No complaints here
I have owned this kettle for 2 years.I have had none of the negative experiences listed by other owners/reviewers.Mine doesn't have a single chip, (I have electic burners).I haven't had trouble pouring from the kettle either.I believe the booklet that comes with it mentions not filling the water in the kettle more than a third full - which is still a considerable amount of water, enough for about 4 lrg mugs. The whistle stopper on the spout does get very hot though.I'm surprised people are having such trouble with their kettles;mine looks just as good as the day I got it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good looking, classic kettle
I don't know what everyone's complaining about! This is like the original whistling tea kettle from 100 years ago only it looks better! If you don't leave it boiling on the stove for a half an hour, the handle is perfectly 'holdable'(and positionable) and it makes the classic whistling tea kettle sound. So you have to use a kitchen towel sometimes to pull the whistling top off,(I didn't) they were always like that! If you don't want to pull the whistling top off of a tea kettle, buy an Oxo. Otherwise, stop yer gripin', this one is very nice and Le Crueset good looking too! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ATTRACTIVE, HARD WORKING KETTLE
I have had my Le Creuset for over a year and could not be more pleased, I would never switch back to ordinary tea kettles. In my opinion, most of those are too disposable. This is such a classic look and if you follow the simple care and use instructions, it's functional and durable.I just let it sit for a minute after it boils but you can also use an oven mitt to pull off the whistle attachment sooner. We use ours several times a day and have yet to find a chip, it's easy to clean too.It will probably chip and rust eventually, with as much use as it's getting. It might be a little extra effort but as far as durability and design, it's worth it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks nice, but...
I received this kettle as a wedding gift and was very happy with it, at first. While it looks very nice, it is too high maintenance. It rusts if not left completely dry and the finish chips off too easily. Also, the whistling attachment can be difficult to remove, especially since it is hot (but it's also a pain to pop it back in to place). And, if you lose or break the whistling piece, the kettle is no longer a whistling kettle.Who knew a tea kettle could be such a hassle?I returned this and got the Oxo Uplift tea kettle instead.I am MUCH happier with this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cute, Sturdy but it will rust
I've owned this kettle for about a year and a half.Enamel will rust even with the best of care.I had hopes because of Le Creuset's quality it would last for years.I would not recommend this product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great kettle
I'm very happy with the kettle, it's of good quality and will last me a long time.

4-0 out of 5 stars function and design
We have enjoyed using the tea kettle, but have removed the whistler as it is hard to pour with otherwise and difficult to remove when hot. The styling is nice and very funtional. We've never had a whistling kettle before so it has not been a big deal for us. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Distinguishing itself from other Le Creuset demi kettles, this 1-1/4-quart vessel offers the added benefit of a whistle that communicates with a high-pitched tone when the water has reached its boiling point. Thanks to a carbon steel core, heat conducts quickly and evenly. The pot's exterior features Le Creuset's renowned enamel coating providing a surface that not only looks lovely, but also wipes clean with a damp cloth. Additional features include a removable lid that fits tightly to trap in heat and a locking handle that facilitates safe pouring and transport. Although heat-resistant, the handle can get quite warm so oven mitts are recommended. Appropriate for heating sources ranging from gas and electric to radiant and ceramic, the stovetop teakettle will function in any household. Measuring 9-1/2 by 7 by 6-1/2 inches, this piece benefits from periodic de-scaling and should be hand washed. -- Amy Arnold ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware enamel coating
The white enamel coating transferred to the burner when used on an electric stove.Bad design.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like this kettle...
I have had this kettle for 3 years and have had no problems.I love the style, color and size. You do need to be careful when removing the whistle, I let it sit for a moment and remove it w/ a potholder or towel.I like that the whistle does come out for better pouring.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment...
I bought this kettle because I've used and loved Le Creuset's cookware foryears, but they really fell short with this item; it's terribly designed. The main problem is that the whistling mechanism is a totally separatepiece from the rest of the kettle, and must be fully removed from the spoutbefore you can pour. This a safety hazard, because it fits in the spout sotightly, you really have to yank hard to pull it out, and with the kettlefull of boiling water, you're likely to scald yourself in the process. Andif you use it without the whistler (thus eliminating one of the sellingpoints of this item), the water consistently overflows from the spout whenit reaches a boil, even if you only fill the kettle halfway. Also, thehandle is not very well insulated, so it's a bit too hot to pick upbarehanded, which is really more an inconvenient than a safety concern. Myhusband and I were each burned more than once in the 3 weeks that we hadthis kettle, before we finally got fed up and returned it. It's really toobad, because this kettle is beautiful and Le Crueset's other stuff isfantastic, but this particular item is a waste of money and dangerousbesides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Whistling Kettle Traditional Le Creuset Quality
A large capacity whistling tea kettle from a "quality" French cookware specialist. The reason the product didn't rate 5 stars from me was the weight of the kettle when filled with water. I thought it was heavy tohandle, and perhaps even a little dangerous to pour from, after the waterhas boiled. However, the weight is traditional "Le Creuset" whichis the choice of many French gourmet cooks and chefs (who am I to quibble?)The whistling tea kettle, a recent addition to their product line at LeCreuset, is available in many attractive colors which match their upscalecookware. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars You have to Love Le Creuset
Okay, my brother used to work for Marshall Fields and he got a bunch of "tre chic" cookery really diry cheap on clearance one holiday season. Among those items were Henkel chef's knives and a complete set of Le Creuset stuff. Since that time the name alone is branded into my head as being good and trendy.
Reality struck though as my mother in law purchases a yellow tea kettle from a Marshall's store (for those of you not familiar with Marshall's, they sell stuff cheap that could not sell at full retail in the big stores) well we have it for a while and the deposits from the water supply build up in it. Then one day, in the midst of a beer quagmire with my neighbor, I forget that I was boiling water for hot chocolate. Anyway long story short, it survived the "dry boil" the first time. Last week I did it again completely sober, and the enamel flaked off like so many flecks of dandruff amidst the heads of the Programmers at work.
So I bought the little red one to make my wife happy, and I guess I am happier with this color too.
Follow all of the directions whether in German or Spanish, and this "baby pot" still deserves a four.

1-0 out of 5 stars For Looks Only
This beautiful little teapot is unfortunately good for looks only! I was so surprised that upon heating this kettle up for the very first time - the bottom burned off! Standing at the sink waiting to make a cup of tea, I heard weird popping noises as paint popped off the kettle all over my stove and counter. There was no actual fire thank goodness. Obviously a design flaw - just surprised a company as fine as Le Creuset made such a big flaw - an unusable tea kettle - well, unuseable if you are thirsty!

5-0 out of 5 stars This gorgeous kettle made me fall in love w/Le Creuset!!!
Excellent little kettle for small family! Heats up fast, keeps hot long! Never leaves my stove! My husband, my baby & I drink more tea than ever before! Saw it first on Food Network. Thought, if it's good for famous chefs, it's good for me. Didn't have a problem whatsoever!
Now I am gradually replacing all my kitchen with Le Creuset.
Why didn't I know about you earlier?!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars below par for LeCreusat
Although still in use and attractive on the stove, this teakettle suffered a chip to the surface within the first few weeks of use. Would not recommend it for durability.

2-0 out of 5 stars "Le Creuset" 1 1/4 quart demi teakettle.
The overall (classical) stylings of this kettle do somewhat resemble it's original french cuinsine genre, but unfortunately the mass manufactured look it takes on now gives it little if any heart at all... "Kmart anyone?" ... Read more
