5-0 out of 5 stars Great price, Great features
After our old vaccum bit the dust, it was time to hunt for a new one. I spent 2 or 3 hours searching the web for the best-selling, highest-rated vac (hey, life's too short to make all the mistakes yourself - learn from others). The Eureka 4870DT was consistently ranked in the top 3 on everyone's list. So, I bought one.
Installation took 1-2 minutes and required no tools (I've yet to read the instructions...). Once complete, I plugged it in, turned it on, and grinned, as the sound of the motor was simply ear candy...vvvmmmmm
Now, the true test comes - under the dining room table (those of you with kids can imagine). However, before I get there I should mention 2 obvious cons: weight and the foot release lever.
First, this vacuum weighs 21 lbs, which is ~ 4 - 7 lbs heavier than most vacuums in its class. Second, the foot release lever is a bit stiff at first, I've noticed it loosen up a little bit with more use (or perhaps I've just acclimated).

After my initial mini-inspection, I was off to the grandstand court, under the dining room table. Click--clank--vmmmvmmm-click-click--vmmm-click-vvvvmmm-vvvmmm-vvvmm, all clean. The one obvious pro is that the suction is awesome! It does a great job on carpets, use the hose for corners.

As my old vac didn't have a hepa filter, I wasn't used to the smell (it doesn't stink or anything; kind of reminds me of a hosptial or doctor's office smell)

All-in-all I give it an 'A'.

Oh, one more thing, although the vaccum comes with extra bags, you don't have to immediately use one as 1 bag comes pre-installed (guess I should read the instructions :-)).

Best of luck to those vacuum shoppers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Value and Bang for your Buck
I researched a lot among upright vacuums. This vacuum is great for the money that you pay, further it does its job very well. It comes with several attachments which are all held on to the main vacuum. Things like foot leaver, carpet/hard wood floor clip is slightly tight when new but it gets ok upon few uses, attachments don't fall off they have to be snapped-in correctly. Some reviews said that belt gives up fast; I have not faced it as yet. The roller moves very fast hence obliviously, one should take care it does not suck up shoe lace or any loose cloth. Also since roller moves so fast that at times if feel like a self propelled vacuum, which means it really brushes the carpet and yet is gentle. The hose could have been a bit longer hence I give a 4*, but then again for the price and its quality work was the best out there. Great I did not buy a Dyson!!!, can get 4 of these.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's sucks, but in a good way!
We've had it for about a month. We were tired of the bagless types you had to empty all the time. This works good, strong suction. Only thing is, it looks like a toy, with a lot of plastic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
I bought this vacuum based largely on the customer reviews. I wanted one rated highly by Consumers (reviews indicated it was) and it needed to be affordable. Because of my pets and alergies creeping up on me, I wanted a Hepa filter as well. I received the vacuum and couldn't wait to try it and I was very happy with the results. The vacuum picked up everything (cat and dog hair too), fluffed the nap on this old carpet and actually made it look as if I had had it cleaned! I was happily surprised to find that some spots I was going to use a rug cleaner on because my old vacuum hadn't gotten them out were gone after using this Eureka Vac. My only negative comment is that it is heavier than I expected it to be; however, as previous reviewers commented, the brush action actually does help pull the vacuum forward as if it were self-propelled so that helps quite a bit. I would recommend this one to someone as a great vacuum at a great price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Vacuum!!!
I bought one of these vacuums for our daughter at the end of last summer when their very old vacuum quit. I did a review of the consumer magazines at the time and this one seemed at the top of the heap.

Meanwhile I've been using our older Eureka vacuum new enough to be the plastic type (6 or 8 years old?) and getting results far from good and needed multiple passes in some areas to get the carpets clean.

Every time I see our daughter she thanks me again for the vacuum and raves about it and how their friends ask if they got new carpets. It is that good!

Amazon had an even better deal than last summer and I finally decided to get one before they are discontinued and the price of the replacement for it goes up. Free shipping was estimated at a week or more but I got it IN 3 DAYS! It's hard to beat that though it's likely a result of being in California only a couple of hundred miles from the area of Nevada from where it was shipped.

I've cleaned a couple of carpets with it and the kitchen vinyl floor.

* It seems to really get the carpets clean, both relative plush one and a dense low pile one and the vinyl floor is free of the dirt and kitchen droppings. ISN'T THAT WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT???
* It seems to have as much or better suction using the hose and attachments as most canister vacuums that I've ever used. Far superior to any other upright I've ever used.
* It has a cord that is quite a bit longer than the one in the older Eureka that it is replacing. A great help in the long family room we have.
* The tools are securely held in place, unlike some vacuums that I've used where they keep falling off as you use the vacuum.
* The brush stops rotating when you return the handle to the vertical position. No more areas of the carpet that get a bunch of rubbing on them when you use the suction hose and attachments.
* The HEPA filtering is a real nice feature. I'll investigate getting washable replacement filters (see another review here for info) for this vacuum and our daughter's.

* As I recall was mentioned more than once in these Amazon reviews when I read them last summer, it IS much harder to PULL than any other vacuum I've used. My wife would complain but since I do most of the vacuuming it's not a problem and it's a result of the superior cleaning that it does so you can't have everything.
* The switches are hard to push and latch and the brush roll control in particular had to be pushed much harder than I'd usually push a handle made from plastic. The handle lock foot switch likewise is hard to press and wasn't easy to activate to lower the handle to the floor to clean under low furniture. Now that I know how hard things need to be pressed it'll be easier to work it and maybe things will get looser as they are used but my wife would have problems with this.
* The upholstery brush doesn't easily go into the place for it and the only way I could get it to stay in was to push VERY HARD on one edge of it and only have it held in by that one edge. The manual doesn't give details on exactly how it mounts and again my wife would never get it held in were she to use it.
* The unpacking, even when I was particularly careful spread small pellets of styrofoam everywhere -- a great chance to try out the vacuum -- and the styrofoam BB sized pieces stick to the plastic and hose of the vacuum when you take it out of the box. Don't forget to vacuum off the vacuum itself before you spread them even further. It would have been nice if it had been in a large paper sack so I could have removed it without all the styrofoam stuck to it by the electrostatic charge and I could recycled the sack.

It's not perfect but in the real world few things are when cost and features have to be traded off.

*** I don't think you can go wrong with this vacuum.***

I'm hoping that after a few weeks of use I'll still be as enthusiastic about it as my daughter is. ... Read more

Great for high-speed, large-area cleaning, this Eureka upright vacuum is simple, maneuverable, and strong. Though not appropriate for bare floors, the vacuum features six different carpet-nap settings, tuned with an easy-access dial that ranges from low pile to thick plush. The no-nonsense construction of the vacuum makes it easy to push and turn, while the wide bumper protects furniture and baseboards. The back-mounted cloth bag zips open completely for easy removal of the inner paper bag. The stout metal brush roll on this machine stands up to abuse and thoroughly sweeps and combs carpet for deeper cleaning. The handle--released with a foot pedal--can go flush with the floor for vacuuming under furniture. Though this model doesn't come with hoses, attachments, or extra gadgets, it's a reliable, powerful way to clean all kinds of carpet. At 20 pounds, it's not exactly a lightweight, but the spare design lets you turn it on a dime. Eureka makes this upright with a bright headlight, two cord hooks, a foot-controlled power switch, and a 50-foot power cord. It also comes with a spare paper dust bag. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks like I found It.
We call my wife the Vacuum Lady. All she does is Vacuum .When she gets home from work the first thing she does is grab the vacuum. We've had our 5 amp professional Eureka Vacuum since 1977. Although it's pretty beaten up it is still running fine.I wanted to buy her a new one. We bought a new Eureka lightweight and brought it back the next day. The sound was too high pitched and it felt like a toy vacuum. The brush is made out of plastic. In fact with all my research I found out that most are plastic not metal like the Eureka C2094G .The metal ones last forever. Now we finally found the exact replacement the Eureka Heavy Duty Commercial Series . It has a 50 foot cord and that's the longest you will find.Instead of putting all extras and accessories into the vacuum it is just pure raw power .If you want a vacuum that lasts 25 years this is it. ... Clean carpets, bare floors, and stairs in a snap with the MiniLight upright vacuum from Eureka. Weighing just 8 pounds, the machineis lightweight but not flimsy, has a 10-inch cleaning path, andincludes a three-way power switch for greater cleaning range. Equippedwith a dual-motor system, the Mini Light allows you to choose betweensafe bare-floor cleaning (no brush-roll action) or more aggressivecarpet cleaning (with motor-driven brush roll). Eureka's bagless designincludes a transparent dust-collection cup, so you can see at a glancewhen it needs emptying. The system eliminates the hassle of bags, and, even better, helps maximize the efficiency of the machine with regularemptying. Popping the cup off to dump it out is simple—-it releases andreattaches better than many similar models—-and it includes a washablefilter. The collapsible handle is especially useful on stairs and forstorage. The machine's cord retainer, dual power-cord hooks, andcomfortable loop handle are helpful extras. 5-0 out of 5 stars Yellow and Sucky!
When I first saw this vacuum, I thought it looked VERY flimsy and VERY yellow. But after reading other people's reviews, it seemed to work well on pet hair and dust. And the fact that it's a bagless and with no HEPA made it even more attractive. I don't have allergies so I don't need that expensive filter. From past experience, HEPA filters get horribly clogged. And your vacuum loses suction power. So finding a vacuum that didn't have that feature made me so happy! So with all those considerations, I bought it.
I was amazed at how sturdy it was and how well it worked around my rabbit pen. It pick up ALL of my rabbit's hairs and pulverized calcium tablet bits. So I decided to try his spilled pellet litter. And it picked that up as well as the larger pellet food!
I then decided to vacuum the rest of my apartment should be pretty clean since I vacuum it everyday (kind of have to when you live with a rabbit). And it was even more amazing!!! The dust cup was more than half full with dust and hairs that my big vacuum missed.
Cleaning is easy. Just take off the dust cup and dump the dirt in the trash. There is a fine mesh screen filter (like the ones for lint in the dryer) and it seems to catch dirt just fine. And you can clean it by rinsing or you can replace it for just $2.99 when ordering from the manufacturer.
I don't know about this little vac's reliability but Eureka is a pretty good brand. And for $35-$40 bucks. I would just get another if this one broke or lost suction power.
And it's so cute! It really is a mini vacuum (not those lame stick vac brooms).

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Apartments
I was recently in the market for a new vacuum after my 10 year old Bissell died, so I decided to give this Eureka a try since it was on sale. It has turned out to be a great value for my money. I have two cats that I'm always cleaning up after and the Eureka easily sucks up pet hair, cat litter, and bits of dry cat food that sometimes make their way to the floor or carpet. And it does a much better job on the stairs than my old Bissell ever did. Best of all the Eureka is lightweight and does not take up much storage space, definitely a plus for me as I live in an apartment. On the other hand if you live in a house you may just want to have this for quick jobs where you don't need to use your big vacuum, as the dust cup has to sometimes be emptied midway through vacuuming one room. In all I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lasted 6 months!
I got mine from QVC and it only lasted six months before it just decided to stop working. So, I'm out the money but it is a great vacuum when it does work. It picked up everything but the cord is extremely short. I like the disappearing handle - that's very helpful. But, IT IS VERY, VERY LOUD! My little boy just couldn't stand it whenever I used this thing and quite frankly, neither could I. Other vacuums don't bother us that much but definitely don't buy this if you are bothered by sound. I guess I really don't miss that part at all, but it did a great job picking up stuff off the kitchen floor. It would be nice to have it longer than six months - next time I'm buying a shark!

3-0 out of 5 stars good for small apartments or college kids!
When we first bought this vacuum 2 years ago, it started out real good. It had strong suction power, is not overly loud and was very easy to empty out. However, if you have a big apartment or house, I would not recommend it, it is good for berber carpet or hardwood floors, not for any heavier type of carpet. It does get louder over time until the day it dies. It isn't meant to last too long of a time, the vent will sometimes shoot out dirt on the side (stinging your legs if you have shorts on)! It is good for occasional use, for the typical college dorm or small apartments because it is easy to store and is somewhat light and compact compared to the other models on the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's great! But use earplugs!!
I agree with all the kudos of the other reviewers: it's light, it's compact, it's easy to use. But that noise!! Having only wood floors until now, my only "vacuum" has been a shopvac - and they aren't exactly quiet. But I went out and bought earplugs after the first time with this vacuum. It's not just loud, but shrill. It's still worth it, and I'd rate it highly. But buyer beware of hearing damage!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually Makes Vacuuming Easy!
I purchased the Electrolux Aptitude last month despite some bad reviews here. After using it for one month, I am thoroughly satisfied with it. This is the best vacuum that I have ever owned. It is a replacement for a Hoover V2 that literally fell apart. The Electrolux is much quieter, more solidly built and easier to maneuver. Hoover claims to outclean all other uprights but I find that this vacuum leaves the carpet cleaner and raises the nap of the carpet better. Also, there is no dust residue on the vacuum cleaner, the attachments, and wheels after using it whereas with the Hoover, even with it's HEPA filter, there was always dust.

In summary, I would recommend this cleaner; it's relatively light and very easy to use, quiet, great looking, cleans very well and leaves no dust after using it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware....This is not a real Electrolux!!
I purchased an upright Electrolux about 20 years ago and the vacuum is still going strong, needed another vacuum and greed got the best of me......"an Electrolux for just a little over $300?....I better snatch that up right away!"....What a mistake!! cheap, poor fitting plastic, poor overall performance. a warmed over Eureka (Same Company).

Evidently Electrolux sold off the high quality vacuum cleaner portion of their business to a company called Aerus, they have a web site or you can buy a slightly different version of the Aerus 3000, still the high quality of past Electrolux's, on QVC called the "Ultralux by Electrolux" for $344.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Rip-Off
I first, i thought i was getting a "True Electrolux" for a bargin price. The old saying "you get what you pay for" is oh so true. As it turns out, this is a cheap Eureka vacuum cleaner. First time i tryed to clean under a chair, i discovered the brush head lifts off the floor completely. Forget cleaning under a bed. It's noisy, looks like cheaper tthan normal plastic parts. It also left scuff marks all over my wood flooring. I could get the same vacuum cleaner but branded Eureka for a lot less money if thats what i wanted. For me, it's going back for a refund. My advise, stay away from this product. If it is an Electrolux you want (as i do) then be sure you buy the real item. Don't know why, but the real Electrolux is now called Aerus or something like that. Same great products but a different name now.

My 3 cents worth,

5-0 out of 5 stars Great vacuum, very versatile!
After doing much research, Consumer Reports and reading a lot of reviews, I decided to by the EL 5010 upright. I went to Sears to get a highly rated Kenmore model. However, after comparing the way it felt compared to the Electrolux, I decided to get the Electrolux. It's attractive appearance, comfortable handle, quieter 2 speed motor, tool accessory package and ease of use is what sold me! I originally had planned to get one of the Dyson's but after reading what Consumer Reports said about it, I realized it's not all its hyped to be, inspite of all the rave reviews on this site. Compare several upright vacuums, listen to them and practice handling them in person in a store before you buy or order on line and you'll see what I mean about this wonderfully pleasant vacuum! I was able to clean areas around the computers and wiring along the edge of the wall that have never been cleaned before with the on board tools and hose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not my Mother's Electrolux
For years my Mom used her old Electrolux canister vacuum and it worked like a champ. So needless to say I was very excited to see Electrolux had re-released their product line that is better than ever! Wow, what can I say, it's light, powerful easy to use and picks up pet hair like crazy. Plus, with the HEPA filter my daughter's allergies symptoms have been reduced. I can't say enough good thing about it. It almost makes vacuuming fun. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Eureka! I stumbled upon a great vacuum!!!
I'm very pleased with this vacuum. I was somewhat reluctant to buy this particular model based on the reviews here, however I did enough other research to feel confident about making my purchase and I haven't been disappointed. It has all the important features and impresses me as being a reasonably good quality machine (considering it's relatively low price) that should stand the test of time and my frequent use.

When our old upright went ka-put, my husband who grew up with a canister insisted that we get one. I'm finding that canisters definitely have their advantages - It is much more versatile in its cleaning abilities than an upright, and makes cleaning under furniture and doing stairs easy.

The vacuum has great suction while being very quiet, so that you can easily talk over it if you need to. The various attachments all work well for their respective applications. I especially love the powerhead, which to me was a must in considering a canister. It works wonderfully on our carpets. The bare floor attachment does equally well on the hardwood floors and other non-carpeted areas. The bags are a reasonable size so as not to require too frequent changing and are easy to change. (Bagless doesn't appeal to me - although I've never used one, it sounds messy.) My one complaint is that the bare floor attachment is difficult to remove; you need some small implement to depress the metal button in order to be able to slide it off. It's kind of a ridiculous problem to have with an otherwise well designed vacuum, and it is an inconvenience, but I can live with it.

If I had it to do over again, I would choose it again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally Disatisfied!
I bought a similar model (Eureka 6983A/D) on Amazon and am totally disatisfied with it. The machine came without a model number sticker on it, which I didn't notice until I tried to get service covered under warranty. The vacuum broke brush roll belts from the second time I used it. The repairman told me I would have to clean the brush roll every time I use it to avoid having it melt solid again because the brush roll does not have a shield to protect it from dog hair and other materials one normally vacuums up. Eureka refused to replace the brush roll ($25.95) because I couldn't supply the model number sticker that they didn't put on my particular machine. I will never buy another Eureka vacuum!

4-0 out of 5 stars EUREKA STILL COMES THRU
I recently purchased the Eureka Canister Vacuum Model #6982D to replace another Eureka vacuum that was about 10 years old. The new vacuum has a much better powerhead than the original one and comes with power nozzle for the stairs as a bonus, no extra charge. The vacuum is so quiet and cleans my hardwood floors with ease. The floorhead seems to go in its own direction until you get the hang of the new swivel head. The new one also has suction adjusting that makes a big difference. This vaccum has been such a great change to the old version. The only drawback is that the electrical cord could be longer to keep from changing from room to room, also all of the vacuum is plastic not like the old one with the metal poles. I would rate this vacuum with 4 stars and a great buy, all other places had this for over $220.00. This was a great bargin. I feel that Eureka has always come through for me and I have had other brands. I vacuum every day because of our two dogs and this is so light and easy to use. The tools are on board except the floor noozle this you have to find a place for, the old one had a place for all of the other tools.. But over all a great vacuum..... ... Read more

Weighing only 10 pounds, this is the world's lightest baglessvacuum, according to Eureka. But that's not its only virtue. This720-watt (6 amp) upright has two motors, one for the vacuum and the otherto power the brush roll for carpet cleaning. For bare floors, you canturn off the brush roll so dust isn't simply scattered. EmployingEureka's cyclonic suction, the vacuum does away with messy bag changesby capturing dirt in a removable plastic cup. Its air filter iswashable--another convenience--and its handle folds down for staircleaning and storage. Onboard, there are three tools--upholsterynozzle, dusting brush, and crevice tool--that attach to an extra-longextension hose for hard-to-reach places. If the dust cup fills or thebrush roll clogs, lights flash to indicate trouble. The vacuumassembles with one click to join the body and the power head, and comeswith a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best lightweight I have owned
This purchase was to replace a useless cordless electric lightweight (Rowenta) which stopped working completely after 1 year. This has the most power of any lightweight I have owned. I like the wheels so that the machine does not scrape my wood floors. It picks up debris very well from wood floors, even between the cracks. I was able to use the extension to remove gnats which came in and were attracted to my ceiling. I was surprised that it had enough power to do this. Only negatives - initially, found the cup difficult to empty. After a few tries, it seems to be easier. The machine is noisy and a little on the heavy side but worth the tradeoff to get real power in a convenient little machine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not For Pet Owners
I received this as a free gift so I'm not crying over anything, but if you have pets this may not be for you. The design and comfort is great as is the suction power. I honestly couldn't believe how much more this lighweight vacumn picked up over my regular vac. But very soon I discovered that the collection cup is very small and even just "touching up" around a few places filled the cup up. If you keep vacuming pretty soon - like in a minute, the excess pet hair has itself wrapped all over the paper filter which it very difficult to remove. I would have to take the paper filter assembly outside and and shoot it with a can of compressed air to dislodge it. But if you have no pets and your house barely gets dusty, I would say that this is a good vacumn for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the critics, this little baby is great!
We just got a beautiful large rug for our apartment, which is mostly hard wood floors. I had a hard time trying to find a vacuum cleaner that was smallish, yet worked well on carpet AND hard floors. None of the lightweights, handhelds or stick vacuums seemed to have the crucial double motor (one for the vacuum, one for the brush). When I came across this model, I thought it was probably too good to be true, but in desperation, I bought it anyway. I got it home, and it picked up (IN ONE PASS)all of the dog hair that had been piling up on the rug for almost 2 weeks. I brought it over to the hardwood and it worked equally as well. My roommate and I were AMAZED. I'm not sure what the other reviews are talking about, but we both agreed it was one of the quietest vacuums we'd ever heard. My dog didn't bark at it once! The attachments worked equally well... finally got the dust off the curtains, corners, lamps, window sills and every other dusty place we didn't realize we had. It was almost fun to see how great it worked! People have complained about how if the filter gets dirty, it loses suction, but that is true with any vacuum, unless you have $400 to shell out on a Dyson. The only reason I gave it 5 stars instead of 4 is because the vacuum tends to topple over when using the hand tools, which is really no biggie at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Eureka 410
I liked this vacuum at first until the front blew out and I had to replace it under warrenty which was fine. The first one came with a foam filter and it was easy to clean, but the replacement came with a hepa filter which I found totally annoying. It was pleated and a terrible thing to try to clean. I also found that the replacement filter was twice as expensive as the foam and seems to only be available by mail. The company should have left well enough alone. I also have a problem with the handle being loose. I loved the light weight easy push, but I just can't stand that crazy filter......

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor
1. Lightweight
2. Good for small apartments only.
3. Very medicore suction.
4. Attached hose is short..cannot really get at corners and baseboards easily.
5. The machine filter/cup clogs and fills quickly. If you pick up fine dust, from say carpet freshner, this will lead to a lot of the dust being blown all over your furniture.

My unit arrived with a greasy cup that took me a long time to clean out. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I never bought the thing!
So we finally break down during the summer and bought a new vacuum. I was using an old canister put together with masking tape so you'd think that I'd be grateful for just about anything. Not so.

We got the Eureka Whirlwind model 5197A after much consideration and a fabulous sale. We made the switch to bagless a bit unsure about it but figured why not.

Here's what I liked about it;

1) The look of it; very mod looking
2) The suction; it's amazing what you can get out of your carpets, even in a house without pets.

Here's what I don't like about it;

1) The self propelled feature kicks in on it's own even when you don't want it; annoying that the switch between manual and self propelled is right on the handle and the very act of pushing the vacuum jars it into self propelled from manual. Usually just 3-4 pushes and it's back on self propelled. I personally don't like this feature and prefer to go slowly over my carpets and rugs to get ALL the dirt, rather than whizzing over them quickly and missing the dirt.

2) IT'S HEAVY; not only is this thing too heavy but if you're not careful the upright handle can fall. Which it did to me and landed on my foot...set me out of commission for half a day. I mean this thing is HEAVY. What a pain for lifting all the way to our 2nd floor to vacuum. can't do carpeted steps with it. I seem to recall reading that you are not supposed to but it's not like you can anyhow with the weight of the darn thing. I'm afraid to have my kids around it because it literally could hurt them if the upright part slams down on them.

3) It is eating my floors; so we just pulled up carpet and are waiting to redo our floors so right now I don't care but this is a major problem to me. When I vacuum my area rugs, the floor all around the rugs are scuffed and scraped by this vacuum. How are you supposed to do the edges of the rugs???

4) You can't push the thing when it's off. You have to either carry it or pull it. Just a minor annoyance.

5) I guess I don't like's messy and you have to change the canister every time or every other time you vacuum. Maybe it's not as good on the sinuses but I prefer a bag that I can put in and forget about for a few weeks or so.

I just wish I never bought it. SO...what we're going to do when we get some spare $$$ is buy a new vacuum for the first floor and move this monster up to the 2nd floor where it's wall to wall carpet. I do like the suction but that's about all I like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of suction
It's a great vacuum. The cup is easy to empty. The vacuum does a great job of cleaning and really picks up a lot. It is self-propelled, thus easy to push. My only complaint is that there is no switch to turn of the beater bar especially when using the accessories. ... Read more

Featuring Eureka's True HEPA sealed system for excellent air quality, as well as the Dirt Alert infrared sensor, this Eureka cyclonic vacuum provides exceptional value for the price. Allergy sufferers and pet owners will appreciate the HEPA filtration system, sealed to keep dust and allergens in the bag. The powerful 12 amp motor and 15-inch cleaning swath are accompanied by Eureka's revolutionary Dirt Alert sensor. Here's how it works: An infrared beam located in the vacuum hose sends a light beam across the internal width of the hose. If dirt or debris breaks the light beam, the red light on the front of the vacuum illuminates, indicating that debris is still being picked up and that additional cleaning is needed. We found the Dirt Alert almost addictive in its effect and accuracy.

Although it is not self-propelled, operation of the vacuum is easy thanks to afoot-controlled on/off switch and a markedly bright headlamp. The onboardcleaning tools include an extension wand, crevice tool, combination tool, dusting brush, and upholstery nozzle. Switching between standard upright usageand using the hose and tools is simple, and although the vacuum is hardly light(just under 20 pounds), we managed to drag it up and down a flight of stairswithout breaking a sweat. Overall, this vacuum offers a tremendous value. Itcomes with a limited one-year warranty. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great - the Dirt Alert is an awesome feature.
I guess I'm not as particular as others, or maybe my old vacuum was so bad that I just don't know any better - but I am extremely pleased with this vacuum.
It cleans awesome, and the Dirt Alert feature has really helped me to get the most out of the time spent vacuuming (even if it does take a little more time - knowing the carpet is completely vacuumed is well worth it).
The only reason I don't give this vacuum 5 stars is that it can be a little tricky to maneuver. I guess the wide cleaning path is partly to blame, but there is some benefit to that, too.
The vacuum is not heavy and was relatively easy to vacuum steps. The ulphostery attachment works very well at picking up pet hair.
Overall a great value if you are considering this as a replacement.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Vacuum REALLY [is bad] (Not A Compliment!)
At the recommendation of a friend, I bought the Eureka Victory vacuum cleaner. Big Mistake! It doesn't pick up dirt well at all and anything larger than the most microscopic dust particle will remain on the floor for all eternity unless YOU pick it up. This vacuum cleaner is not the absolute worst I've ever seen, but it's darn close. And that's not a good thing. And it clogs up when the bag is LESS than half full! Don't waste your time, energy, anger or money on this one. It really [is bad].

3-0 out of 5 stars Cleans well, but not good at edges
Easy to assemble. Not that hard to push or pull. One attachment has no storage area on the vacuum. Doesn't clean edges very well, either using the front or the sides (leaves an area about 0.25in uncleaned). Cord does not store very well due to the long lenth (which is appreciated). Carrying handle is a nice feature when bringing the vacuum up and down the stairs. All in all, a good value for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice sucker....
The vacuum is nice, easy to assemble and includes a bevy of
attachments. However, the vacuum is *NOT BAGLESS*. That is to say,
it needs to have a dust collection bag in addition to the HEPA filter.
Otherwise, great product.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best vacuum I've ever had
I just put this together and vacummed up a storm. I have two cats and can't believe how much cat hair this thing sucked up! The hose is already attached which is great with a toddler! It's light and pretty quite too. It's easy to empty and easy to use as well. I am very pleased with this vacuum and would recommend this it to anyone. For the price it does an awesome job. It made two year old military carpet look good again!

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD pickup, POOR impracticle features
The price tag you're looking at is for the features and everyone seems to be giving this vacuum a high rating on it's power performance ONLY. You can find a vacuum with better features and equal power for cheaper.

PROS: 1) Good suction 2) Easy to empty 3) Three filters 4) Hasn't clogged and I've sucked up a bag of flour and have brand new carpet.

CONS: 1) IT'S HEAVY 2) It's very bulky 3) The hose is way too SHORT which really surprised me. I tried to pull it out to suck something up and it barely reached pass the vacuum. As heavy as the vacuum is you'd think they'd make the hose longer so you could reach the messes. Not to mention that it only comes with one extension (plus a brush and a crevice tool) 4) The duster is VERY IMPRACTICAL. It's what made me try this model and I never use it now. The first time I used it I knew I would never use it again. When you put the duster back into the holder it pushes the bristles back and throws the dust everywhere. It doesn't get an electrostatic charge (at least mine never did) so dust really doesn't stick to it very well. It just moves the dust around. You're better off with a good old fashion feather duster.

So to sum it all up, it's heavy and awkward to use, but it has excellent sucking power. Don't buy this for the features, you can find a vacuum with equal power for the same price (or lower) that has better features.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dog Hair Magnet
I own a 85lb German Shepherd that does a lot of shedding. I bought this vacuum based on some reviews written about it and can only reaffirm the positive comments on it. I opened the box and tried it right away and after 1 min I had to empty all the dog hair it had picked up. It works great and would recommend it to any pet owner that has problems with pet hair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
I have this vacuum in the Lite version {4388BT}. It picks up really well and I haven't had any problems. I've owned many brands of vacuums over the years and I compared them for many months before buying this one at [local store]. It could use a longer cord and hose. But, you can buy attachments, etc., if you look on-line. It may not be for heavy duty cleaning. For the [money] it cost it was a good value but is being discontinued.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vacuum For Your $
Vacuum shopping? Look no further! This vacuum has many of the features that all the fancy ones have for much less! It is baby doesn't get scared from the sweeper anymore! It is VERY easy to push. My last vacuum ("swivel guide" Dirt Devil) was a serious workout and I hated it in everyway. This vacuum really picks up and can handle the job. We just had new carpet installed and it shedded constantly. I think we used this vacuum twice on it and more shedding :) By the way, it is really cool seeing everything that it picks up! The tools are easy and convenient. Last but not least, this vacuum is VERY light. I give this vacuum 5 stars! The only thing that could be improved is the cup could be bigger, but that in no way interferes with the vacuum's performance. Go out and get it, you won't be sorry! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for people with kids
I got the carpet cleaner about a month ago and so far I think I got what I payed for. I have a two year old and this carpet cleaner has been a real life saver while living in an apartment. The only bad thing about it is that when I pack it up and put it away the soap leaks out into the clean water container and onto my floor where is has been sitting. I have fallowed all of the instructions on how to store it and nothing seams to help. This is the first carpet cleaner I have gotten and so far compared to the one's you rent I am happy. If you are looking to buy this carpet cleaner please look around to find the best price because the differ from store to store.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cleaner
I got my Altantis last week and used it for the first time over the weekend. I usually rent a cleaner from my local grocery store and cleaned these same carpets with a rented machine 6 months ago. The Atlantis was so much easier to use! I went over each section of carpet twice and my carpets were completly dry in less than 2 hours. I love the fact that the handle folds for easy stoage and the entire unit (including attachments) fits under a shelf in my linen closet. This is the first cleaner I have ever purchased and I love it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Carpet sopping wet-sore back
I was very excited about this new carpet cleaner. My Hoover had died after 6 years of use, and although I liked it very much I thoguht this Atlantis looked easy to use and small to store. Well, it arrived yesterday and I tried it right away. Well, it is now 24 hours later and my carpet is still wet in some areas!
I went over the whole carpet again and again and again and to no avail, the carpet was still sopping wet. The return tank never actually filled up all the way once even though I used 3 tanks of water on the carpet. The cleaner is very heavy and difficult to push. I admit I have shag carpeting, but when I used my hoover it was no more difficult than regular vacuuming. With this thing I actually had to heave it forward and pull it back with both hands. It was exhausting and back breaking. (I think without the water it weighs 35 lbs.) Well, it is back in the box with a return label on it. It just did not remove the dirty water from the carpet. Very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best extractor out there
I run a housekeeping department at a large resort and spa. I originally bought the 2591 used it, loved it, then found I needed the power scrubber and floor tools, so i returned it and got the 2595a, it is so powerful that 90% of all the water put out gets sucked back in. it is not the best on burber carpet. No back aches, it rolls easily, i use commercial products at work and I am thinking of buying a few of these instead of the ones i use at work that cost 3 times as much and do the same job. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Some tips
First, I have to say that today I bought a different model (but I think it is probably quite similar to this one). I have 5841. Anyway, I wanted to mention right off that the belt broke on mine within 5 minutes too and this is important because I read a review that said the same thing. I don't know what is up with that - but if your vacuum doesn't seem to be working on carpet, your brush stops turning and you smell burning - use that replacement belt right away. It is quite easy to change. Just have a napkin handy for that burning rubber you're bound to incur. Secondly, I was amazed at all the dust this thing collected. I haven't emptied it yet because I want to show my husband how amazing this is. I mean I am sure my old vacuums were sucking up dust that I just couldn't see because it was bagged, but when I vacuumed the baseboard for instance, there just wasn't that quantity of dust so where did it all come from you ask? Who the heck knows... the blinds, the floors, the lamp shade. Wow, it makes cleaning nice because the stuff is not just flying around like it would be if you were just dusting with a static brush or something. Anyway, my vacuums never last more than a year or two, so I never ever invest too much in them. The one I bought today happened to be refurbished at $80 but after checking on-line I saved about $50 finding it at Big Lots. Happy vacuuming you neat freaks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Price, Great Vacuum!!
We purchased this vacuum because we realized (finally) that our 1978 Hoover probably was not going to be able to do the job with a new cat in the house, considering my fiance has allergies! I had just vacuumed our rugs with our old vacuum when I decided to test out the Eureka, I had to change the filter twice there was so much left over gunk in our carpets!! I would highly recommend this vacuum to anyone even considering buying a new vacuum, it's light, it has on-board tools, like a handy bristled brush attachment (good for cat hair on sofa) and it makes your carpets look fantastic. The best part is that my new cat, who is deaf, lets me vacuum him using the little brush attachment - purrrfect!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Vacuum!
We received this vacuum as a wedding gift and it works great! We've had it for 4 months now, and its been very helpful to us! I read the reviews here before adding it onto our registry, and so far it has held up to its reviews! We have 3 cats and it sucks up cat hair very well. Also, my husband and I were amazed at how much dirt it sucked out of the vacuum when we first used it. Wonderful vacuum at a wonderful price! -Emily

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Vacuum - Keep Your Eye on the Belt
We got this for our wedding, and had a similar problem to the last reviewer. Suction worked through the hose, but not through the carriage. I skimmed the owners manual, and realized that the belt must be broken. We opend it up, and sure enough, that was the problem. So, we're off to buy a pack of Eureka Extended Life Belts. It's 3 bucks for the pack of two.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice vaccuum for a good price.
I just purchased this vaccuum and used it for the first time. It does a great job. It picked up stuff I didn't know existed in my carpet. It's quiet and it is easy to move around the carpet. The only drawbacks are the relatively small dirt container and lack of attachments. But how often do we use those attachments anyway. I'll just have to get use to emptying the container every couple of rooms... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A Vacuum that SUCKS!
10 REASONS TO BUY THIS VACUUM (in no particular order):
1) the price is great - I can't stand spending a lot of money on anything
2) picks up dog hair and cat hair with the greatest of ease (I have three different long-haired dogs)...I live in the desert, so I needed something that could keep up with year-round shedding
3) very won't feel strained using this one
4) it automatically shuts down to prevent damage by over-heating (this was useful when I accidentally sucked up an extenstion cord)
5) extremely easy to assemble (I didn't even need the directions)
6) detailed directions - I didn't need them for assembly, but they tell you how and when you should change the filters (only twice a year at most, so you save money on filters)
7) can get suck up dirt from the very edge of furniture, such as dressers, shelves, where-the-wall-meets-the-carpet grooves, etc...(the only time you need the hose extension is for the really hard to reach places)
8) reasonably quiet - vacuums are always going to make some noise, but this one is quiet enough to use when the kiddiewinks are taking a nap
9) wide range of settings from high pile to bare floor (and it worked very well on my tile - didn't scatter the dirt like other brands)
10) this was the most important reason for me - it actually sucked up my husband's hair off the floor...all other brands just left little hair balls that I had to pick up by hand.

I only wish the cord was longer, but with everything I'm getting for $60, I could care less about changing sockets between rooms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Utilitarian
This vacuum is a fairly bare-bones unit. Like many lower cost units it has a rather short hose so you may have a hard time reaching areas. Also, the head of the vacuum continues to spin even when in the upright position.

It does have a nice sturdy feel and a powerful suction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Deals Still Exist
I had a lot of doubts about purchasing this machine. How good could it be? It's so cheap! Well, I couldn't be happier. It is light, compared to the competition. It even seems to propel itself. It has a tremendous amount of suction. Say good bye to dog hair! I had been using a dinosaur (a 20 year old Eureka) and with this machine in my hands, I feel like I've entered the new millennium. If you really don't need the bells and whistles of expensive machines, this is the way to go.

With all the fabulous styling of '50s classics, this RetroVac from Eureka combines deep-cleaning power and long-life construction. A bagged machine, the RetroVac has durable and handsome metal housing with a rugged floor nozzle in swimming pool blue. The nozzle is outfitted with a clear furniture bumper and a sleek chrome cover. Its cleaning path is 13 inches wide and its "Dial A Nap" control raises and lowers the height, adjusting the machine for low, medium, and high pile carpet, not to mention the acre of shag in your rec room. The RetroVac has an extra-large capacity bag accessed through a full-length zipper on the back of the snazzy houndstooth check cover. Triple filtration in the bag’s materials helps retain dust and particulates inside, so the atmosphere of your home is cleaner. Eureka would have done well to update a few of the minor features (quick-release cord hooks and an extra-long power cord are missing here), but the foot-controlled handle release and power button are sturdy and handy. Standing smartly upright, the RetroVac measures approximately 13 by 15 by 45 inches. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars deep-cleaning and durability
this cleaner is based on the classic eureka models made since the fifties and the current sanitaire commercial heavy-duty vacs. these offer some of the best deep-cleaning action available with easy to get parts if service should be necessary. if you have heavy traffic with dense carpet nap this is what is needed to get it clean. much lighter than most all tools-on-board machines and certainly more effective! cleaners of this type can provide daily service for decades! ... Weighing in at only 7.6 pounds, this standard-sized but lightweight vacuum is ideal for carrying to pickups either up- or downstairs. The rechargeable vac also has a high-powered 12-volt battery that can handle an entire 1,500-square-foot apartment (or 15 minutes of vacuuming) on a single charge. The telescoping handle has a comfortable grip and extends the unit to an almost horizontal position (measuring 6 inches tall) for cleaning under furniture and for storing. The Boss’s two-motor system uses a revolving brush roll for carpet cleaning and another setting for wood floors that you can control with the flip of a switch. Rather than using bags, the Boss Upright collects debris in a large, transparent dust cup that is easy to empty. Other features of this stick vac include a stair-cleaning handle and a wrap-around furniture guard on the head. 5-0 out of 5 stars We were amazed by what this little vacuum could do!
I bought this vacuum for my wife, as a steriod laced replacement for our Black and Decker Dustbuster, which fell off the wall one time to many. We thought it would do an OK job as a replacement.
Wow! It not only replaced the Dust Buster, it has kept the Hoover in the closet also. The suction and the little beater bar just hums, and on bare floors with our three cats, it sucks up the fur, and the litter dust without any problems.
A down side is that the battery only lasts around 20-25 minutes, but thats plenty for us, and you can not plug it in and vacuum.
It is easy, albeit dusty, to empty the dirt catcher, and the filter shakes clean without problems.
What a nice big surprise in a small package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once you go cordless, you'll never go back!
This is the ultimate cordless vac! It combines the convenience of a stick vac with the function of an upright vac.
First, you should know that I hate to clean, but I like a clean house. I'm a stay-at-home Mom with one toddler, two cats, and two dogs, and a messy husband. My house is VERY lived in, and it is just shy of 1500 square feet. The majority of which is hard wood floors, a kitchen which is rough slate, one 9x11 natural flat weave rug and one room with burber carpet.
I have been using this vac everyday since I got it. Like I said, I hate to clean, but I look forward to using this vacuum! It really has great suction, it rolls over all of my floors with ease, and the canister holds ALOT and is very easy to empty and clean! I don't have to stop and empty it after every room like I did with my broom vac. The battery lasts for my entire house with a little life left still! The telescopic handle actually does come in handy for storing and using on stairs.
I don't recommend this for your deep down cleaning, but if your looking for something that makes everyday pick ups easier, this is what you want. My house would be much messier if it weren't for this vac. Prior to this vac I was using the Eureka Boss Stick Vac, which was nice, but the battery didn't last as long, the filter was a pain, and it didn't roll as nice on my various floors.
This cordless vac is SOOO much more convenient in every way, and really leaves no excuse for vacuuming daily, because it takes all the things you dread out of the picture. It is lightweight, and no more stopping and unplugging and plugging in every room. WHAT A PAIN! Especially if all your outlets are babyproofed like ours are.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a Value Purchase
For the last five years, I have relied upon the customer review at to choose a product and had been very happy with the outcome until this one. I purchased it last October, and the problems I have encountered are:

1. Most of the hair gets entangled in the brush rather than getting sucked into the dust collector. What happens as a result is that quite a few strands of hair lie around where you leave it standing.

2. The pipe through which dust travels before ending up in the dust collector often gets clogged, and so does the small space in the back of the vacuum head, and it is not easy to notice it until you realize it is not picking things up quite as well.

3. There is a small flap that blocks the pipe when the vacuum is off. It just came off after 10 months in commission.

I liked the fact that it is cordless, but that is not enough to justify the cost and the problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars boss sweeps shark by a mile
if you're between this gem and a europro shark, read on... as an erstwhile sharkowner, one learns the shark folks "forgot" to use quality materials. the flimsy shark handle broke off and soon it stopped picking up. being a cordless fan, after i tossed the shark... eureka!! it's far sturdier, more powerful and cheaper. don't swim with sharks, go for the "boss."

5-0 out of 5 stars Cat Hair----Begone!! Hooray!!
I just received my Eureka yesterday and let it charge up overnight. Even though I vacuumed with my regular vacuum yesterday, this morning there was cat hair, dog hair, cookie crumbs from the bake sale baking and packing, some sand from the youngest daughters shoes, etc. in my formerly nice clean carpet. I had been using a Shark electric sweeper for the past 18 months for the quick touchups between vacuuming, but as it gets older, it's getting weaker, and stuff is spewing out the back, time for a replacement. When I came across this little vacuum and read everyone's reviews, I decided to give it a try. After all, I was used to a sweeper, an actual vacuum would be nice! It worked great this morning. Ran it over the carpet, hit the tile in the kitchen, even shortened the handle and buzzed up the stairs. Darn cats love to chase each other up the stairs and based on the amount of hair they leave on them, I'm surprised their not bald! Floors look great! As good as when I pull out the Filter Queen! I suppose it doesn't get the really deep down gunk as good as my big vac, but so what? I'll still use that once or twice a week, but it looks like I won't have to drag it out daily anymore! And the price is great, I'm the original cheapie, looked everywhere, including eBay and nobody has a better price than Amazon! I used the free shipping, but received it a full four days before the earliest day Amazon said to expect delivery. I liked my Shark sweeper when it was newer and worked at its peak, but I loooove this Eureka! The cost of the two items is so close, why bother sweeping when you can vacuum! ... Read more

At about 24 pounds, this is a relatively heavy vacuum, but it includes a sealed HEPA filtration system and it's got lots of features. You get eight carpet height settings, from bare floor to thick pile, and there's also a switch to turn the rotating front brush on and off. (Clever: the top front of the cleaning unit is transparent, so you can see the brush is really rotating.) Another fancy feature is the ease with which you can switch between floor vacuuming and using the onboard tools: instead of struggling with a long hose, just turn a big yellow knob near the handle to switch the air flow. 5-0 out of 5 stars Four words for you...THIS-VAC-IS-GREAT!
Of the many items I have purchased thru, this one is definitely worth rating. And believe me, before I buy something, I read all the reviews on Amazon (the best consumer idea since Consumer Reports). After reading about all the vacs, as well as visiting several manufacturer and the "Good Housekeeping" websites, I purchased a vac thru the Internet and returned it because, with all of its great features and good price, it was WAY (i.e. airplane-takeoff) too loud (A Bissell model). I decided to pay the extra to get this Eureka Ultra SmartVac 4870A (mine doesn't have a "T"), which is WONDERFUL .... It's PROs: 12mighty amps and it IS actually quiet!; on-board attachments - means you don't have to turn it off and flip the thing over, just turn a knob and suck away with the powerful hose; debris by-passes motor thru side; side tubes and hose are transparent for easier clog-detection; strong floor/hose suction; easy, mess-free bag removal; true Hepa filter, light, cord wrap, multiple carpet height adjustments; switch lever for carpets or hard floors (YES!) which stops the brush from rotating; handles on vac base for easier stairway cleaning. CONs: A plastic bumper instead of rubber - no big deal, just be more careful around furniture; and if you can call the price a con - [The price] ismore than I EVER wanted to spend on a vac (a $100 more than the last Eureka I bought, which just gave out after nine years of use) but it is absolutely worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great vacuum!
We needed a new vacuum, and not knowing anything about them, we did research online.

The Eureka Smart Vac got stellar reviews across the board, and Consumer Reports gave it highest ratings, ranking it equal with the first place Hoover, which was twice the price. For the price of this vacuum, you can't beat the quality.

Pros: much quieter than our older vacuum (a 17 amp tank!), wider cleaning surface (15 inches- cleans more floor in less times), many on board tools, HEPA filter, and options to turn the brush off (good for cleaning tile floors) and several carpet pile options. Another nice feature is the fact that the tool/floor switch is on top of the vacuum, so you can just switch it to tools without bending over and messing with the bottom of the vacuum. The tools snap easily into the back of the vacuum, instead of fitting in like bizarre puzzle pieces. The vacuum is very easy to push along the floor, unlike the one we replaced.

Cons: it's not bagless, which isn't terrible. Our vacuum came with a year supply of bags, so that more than made up for the inconvenience. Also, it's not self-propelled, which seems to be the craxe right now with the vacuums. We went to a store and got to try out a self-propelled vacuum (the aforementioned Hoover) and it wasn't for me. I tend to lean on the vacuum as I walk around the house and having it constantly jerk away from me was not pleasant. I much prefer the kind that you push. The final con is that it's heavy, but there isn't a single upright that isn't the same weight as this is.

While it's not something you whip out for a quick clean up (see the Eureka Boss Cordless for that), it's definitely a great vacuum for the entire house.

Short of a riding vacuum, which I have yet to find, this pretty much satisfies all my vacuuming needs. I have a bird that shoots seed out of his cage and it gets lost deep into my carpet and a cat that manages to bring in all sorts of little leaves and things off the enclosed patio, so it's great for everything.

2-0 out of 5 stars did I get a lemon?
I purchased this vacuum after much research. It was heavy, but worked great, even along baseboards, for the first few months. Then I moved, stored it for a few months and when I began to use it again -- just a few days after the one-year warranty expired, it broke. Cost me more than $90 to repair it at a Eureka authorized dealer. It broke again almost immediately. I fixed it again. This vacuum was not abused and overused [it's been suggested by some smart-aleck friends that it died from LACK of use!]. I live in small quarters -- always less than 1000sf and have a 50-50 mix of tile and carpeted floors. Also, if you have vaulted ceilings, it's a real stretch to reach that high with the attachments; even getting the cobwebs from a regular height ceiling isn't easy. I still have this two-year-old vac, but would be afraid to purchase it again. I sure miss my [very] old eletrolux that never broke, but I admit I wonder if I didn't just get a lemon with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eureka 4870 Review
I purchased this vacuum about 10 months ago and absolutely love it. I would highly recommend this vacuum to anybody. I have not had a bit of trouble with this vacuum at all. Putting it together took about a minute. Just attach a few screws to the handle and away I went. No more going over my carpet 3-4 times before every piece of lint is up. Now I only have to vacuum it once. I waited this long to write this review because I wanted to see if it would stand the test of time and it has. I continue to be very please with my purchase. I will never buy a dirt devil vacuum again. They are pieces of junk. At least the model I had prior to my Eureka. Dirt Devil only last a little over 1 year. Hope this helps others in their purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad
I had this vacuum cleaner for about a year now and am pretty satisfied with it. Initially I had some problems with the unit's power shutting down on me, but that's due to my vacuuming brand new rugs that endlessly shed their choking stuff. As long as you know how to avoid those common situations that cause your vacuum cleaner to go wrong, it's going to work fine. I had no belt-breaking problems thusfar (surprise, surprise), perhaps due to luck or perhaps due to the machine shutting off its power automatically whenever it's in trouble.

One thing that I find truly wrong with the unit is that the hose is keep falling out of its plastic holder. It really irritates me when it happens while busy vacuuming. Since it's not holding I stick the end of the hose into my handgrip loop which doesn't make your job any easier but better than dragging the hose all over while vacuuming. I'm going to come up with my own holding device.

Another thing is that lately the unit is not as quiet as before. It's making more noise, so we'll see how long it lasts. When it comes to vacuum cleaners, probably like most of you, I do not have much faith in any brands. In this technologically advanced day and age when we're capable of even cloning a human being, it's laughable that we can't own a vacuum cleaner that will not go wrong past more than a year. This particular brand is one of the better ones out there. I'm giving it three stars simply because I'm a tough grader when it comes to quality, and that's the highest grade I can give to a vacuum cleaner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good product with a few drawbacks
I was deciding between the Deep Steam Cleaner and the Eureka Atlantis, which cleans hard surface floors as well and is therefore more expensive. However, I read a product review somewhere else that said the Atlantis didn't do well with Berber carpeting. So I ordered the 2586B and have been very happy with it so far. As others have said, you really will not believe the amount of dirt that winds up in the collection tank, and the carpets do dry very fast. One drawback: if you have pets like we do, you probably will have to clean all of the pet hair out of the floor bristles each time you use the machine, even if you vacuum first as instructed. It's not hard, it's just gross when it's all wet and grimey with the dirt from the carpet. I also have to use a screwdriver after every cleaning to take off the clear collection shield in the front, which also gets somewhat clogged with wet pet hair. But at least the pet hair is getting sucked out of the carpet, and it's not that hard to clean the machine. Another caveat: this is not really a steam cleaner in the true sense of the word. It's misnamed because you're just using warm water, and no steam comes out of the machine. Vapor steam machines are totally different and good for people with asthma and allergies because they kill dustmites, and also for people who don't want to use chemicals to clean. But vapor steam cleaners seem to be much more expensive if you want one that really works, so I ordered a non-toxic carpet cleaner called Carpet-Free to use with the Eureka machine. (I had read that John Travolta's son almost died from toxic carpet cleaners, so wanted to be extra-careful.) Finally, a real plus was Eureka's customer service. I emailed both Eureka and Hoover with the same question before I made the purchase. Hoover never responded but Eureka sent me a detailed answer promptly. All things considered, the product is a good value.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
If you are a pet owner or the Mother of small children you will find that this little machine will make your life much easier. I have used several different models (including the rental machines) and have found this to be one of the easiest carpet cleaners to use. It is not too heavy and it has an extra long cord so you don't have to keep replugging it in every time you turn around.
The only real drawbacks I can find about the Eureka carpet cleaner is that you seem to have to empty the collection tank alot... it is a simple procedure though and once you get in the groove of the cleaning it doesn't seem to be a big deal. [and besides, if you had a larger tank the unit would weigh more]
You will be amazed at what comes out of your seemingly "clean" looking carpet! For the price, it can't be beat... don't waste your time and money on those little hand held units...spend a bit more... you won't be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Value and Performance
I had spent a lot of time reading reviews provided by Amazon and other consumer report organizations on deep steam cleaners. There seemed to be a lot of mixed reviews on the Bissell and the Hoover. Aside from Bissell creating chaos by offering so many different models of their machines, and the Hoovers just simply appeared to be a little more of an expense than what I had wanted to endure, considering that most of my house is hardwood with oriental/area rugs. However, it seems that most of the problems reported by consumers with all makes/models was the lack of following directions from actually cleaning their carpets to maintaining their machines. I couldn't find many reviews on the Eureka, which I thought could be a good or a bad thing. Assuming that chances are, however, that most people are apt to review a product when they are extremely dissatified with its performance or quality. Eureka has been in American homes for many years, how could one go wrong. I purchased the Eureka because it was the best value for the money. And, I was able to get a pretty decent deal through Amazon. It has paid for itself in the money I have saved by doing my carpet cleaning myself instead of having the pros do it. So far, it has performed beautifully! It has done what I have expected of it and even more. I have been surprised with what it has pulled out of the carpets and area rugs, even those that looked clean. It is easy to use and easy to clean and maintain. The clean water tank and the dirty water tank are easy to carry and remove/install in the machine. The machine isn't terribly heavy (my 2 year old Kenmore upright vac is heavier) and is relatively easy to manuever. The carpets dry quickly and smell and look clean after using the Eureka. The only thing that I wished it had, which would complete the entire package, is a bare floor attachment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good machine for the money
I bought this cleaner (2576A)- same cleaner minus the attachments- and really liked it.

It is a little on the heavy side at 17#, but did a great job cleaning my carpets, both the low pile and the Berber. In fact, I had just cleaned the Berber with my old unit using a wand and hot, sudsy water just 2 days ago. I couldn't believe all the dirt that came out of it using the Eureka just 2 days later!

The dirty water basin is a little on the small size. It says it's 1 gallon, but I found I had to empty it more often than I had to fill the machine. It took all of 30 seconds each time, though, so it wasn't any more inconvenient than any other system I've used in the past.

Don't know how it will hold up over the long haul, but for a first time use, I'm impressed. ... Read more

This tidy bagless upright from Eureka is a super-compactversion of an effective vacuuming combo--cyclonic dust collection andtrue HEPA filtration. Between the two, vacuuming is easy, mess-free,and thorough. While cyclonic systems can bulk vacuums up, thisscaled-back version solves that problem with a compact dust chamber. The cup is transparent, so it's easy to see at a glance when you needto empty it. The HEPA system, called true because it's sealed, filters both intake and exhaust air, and is smartly mounted on theback, where it doesn't compete for space with the dust chamber.Trapping particles as small as 0.3 microns in size, the filtrationsystem keeps 100 percent of dust mites, grass, and ragweed polleninside the vacuum.

With seven settings for a range of carpet types, the vacuum alsoincludes attachments for cleaning bare floors and upholstery.Accessories include a built-in hose, two extension wands, a crevicetool for corners, and a combo dusting/upholstery brush, all stored onboard. Power and handle-release are both foot-controlled, and the dualcord hooks are mounted on the side. With an angled handle and a15-pound weight, this machine is easy to move and lift, thanks to thebuilt-in helper handle on the back. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Vacuum SUCKS...In a good way!!!!!
Need a Vacuum buy this one.... simple enough!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Its [bad]
I am amazed that this vacuum made it to market. It must have been pushed by the marketing dept and not the research dept. It works great for the first minute or two, until there is a inch or more of dirt against the 3x3 inch grill on the one side. All the air has to go thru the dirt in this one small area and the air flow goes to next to nothing and all suckion stops. If you want a bagless, get one with the grill vertcally between the two compartments. This gives a large enough space for the air to go thru and the wind action keeps the dirt from piling on the grill.

The little upright Dirt Devil has the same type of grill but it is just used for small clean ups so the dirt cup gets emptied often.

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay vacuum but Hoover is better
This vacuum works good for picking up animal hair but its lousy for picking up embedded dirt thats not seen. The Hoover Windtunnel is much more effective, even the hoover bagless without the windtunnel technology will out perform the Eureka whirlwind.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bagless is all it's cracked up to be
I've had a similar bagless Eureka model (has a headlight 4481) for two years now. I'm sure they've improved them since then but I think the problems are still going to be the same. That is you must maintain the filters religously. That means every time you vacuum if you want to get good results. You must shake out the primary filter on the cyclone every time, and the secondary one at least every other time. And the HEPA cartridge last 4 months on average for me (and they're not cheap).

I bought it because the bagless feature gives you instant gratification. You see all the stuff it's picking up. And after 2 years it still does a good job of picking up. But the cyclone starts loosing effectiveness after it's less than 1/2 full which means you usually have to empty it at least once during your vacuuming (if you do multiple rooms). So that can be kind of a pain.

Lastly, I had some remodeling done which involved some drywall work. After the workers left there was a lot of fine dust. I started with the cyclone and after just a few minutes the filters were clogged and needed to be cleaned (no more [stink]). I have an old bagged kenmore vacuum (10 plus years old) and it worked great and did not start to lose it's effectiveness until after 30 or so minutes. I know this is a very severe test for a vacuum but sometimes it's real world. I'm going back to bags. They are less hassle and they need service less often. Hope this helps.

3-0 out of 5 stars Got What I Paid For.....
I've had this vacuum for 2 weeks now, and I have to say, it does suck up the hair. I have a St. Bernard dog and 2 cats so needless to say, I have alot of hair. The only negative thing I can say about the vacuum is that when vacuuming off the furniture, it has a tendency to tip over on top of me because the hose is so short. But for the price, it does alot better cleaning than my Phantom ever did. ... Read more
