Amazon.com Review

Early Adopters Pick: October 2002. The world’s only true cyclonic vacuum, generating 100,000 g of centrifugal force and pulling dirt into an indestructible canister made from the same material used for crash helmets.

Named for both its power and its ruthless approach to pet hair problems, the Dyson DC07 Animal upright is a piece of engineering wizardry designed by James Dyson, the inventor of cyclonic vacuums. A hit in Europe for years, Dyson vacuums are new to the American market. At the center of the machine's innovation is the Cyclone air path design, an eight-section chamber that creates powerful, consistent suction. The conical chambers generate 100,000 g of centrifugal force, pushing dust and dirt out of the airflow into the vacuum's 1-gallon collection cup. With no bag to clog, the vacuum's 270 air watts of suction remain steady. The large, transparent collection cup is easy to check and empties tidily--pop it off, hold it over a trash bin, and pull the trigger to release dirt without having to touch it. The DC07 also comes equipped with a multipart filtration system to improve overall air quality in the home. The HEPA filter, measuring 412 square inches in surface area, traps microscopic particulates and allergens. Expertly built, the filter is designed to last the lifetime of the machine.

Suitable for bare floors and carpets, the Dyson upright features a 14-inch cleaning path and edge-cleaning bristles. A foot pedal switches off the brush roll for bare floors, and the nozzle automatically adjusts for various carpet heights. For above-floor cleaning, the vacuum also comes with a cleverly stowed, 17-foot quick-release hose with a reversible extension-wand handle. Onboard accessories include a crevice tool, a dusting brush, an upholstery attachment, and the Animal turbo tool. Designed for lint and stubborn pet hair, the turbo tool features an air-powered brush bar to extract hair from furniture, stairs, pet beds, cars, and other tight spaces.

Made from the same material used in crash helmets, the vacuum is unquestionably durable. Plus, the design only puts 4 pounds of weight on the handle, so pushing and turning is easy. This model comes with a 35-foot power cord and a limited two-year household warranty. It also includes a carpet care kit--a canister of Groom Zorb odor-absorbent carpet cleaning powder and a bottle of Dyzolv spray for spills and stains. --Emily Bedard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding Vacuum Cleaner!
Let me begin by saying that I have three dogs and two cats. Pet hair is the biggest cleaning challenge in our house.

After convincing my wife to discontinue our professional cleaning service, due to increasing costs, I volunteered to take the cleaning duties related to the floors and the furniture. My wife foolishly took on the kitchen, bathrooms, and dusting. What my wife didn't know was that I had been reading up on the Dyson "Animal".

The "Animal" arrived just two days after our last professional cleaning. I immediately vacuumed the entire house and was absolutely amazed at how much pet hair and dirt I pulled out of the carpets and off our hardwood floors. Our house has never been so absent of pet hair. Even my pets were beside themselves. My wife was thoroughly impressed. She said that the house looked and smelled cleaner than ever!

The "Animal" is a total cleaning machine. It easily attacked hardwood floors, carpets, curtains, furniture, and stairs. It's the best cleaning machine I have ever used. Adding a sixth animal to our family was the best thing I ever did!

If you have pets and need a high powered cleaning machine, get the "Animal"! It's worth the money! I donated my old cleaning machines to our YMCA.

5-0 out of 5 stars The purple monster lives up to it's name! "The Animal"
I first heard about Dyson from a airline magazine during a recent business trip. The article was very interesting. A few days later, my wife indicated that we needed a new vacuum and I started telling her about the Dyson.

At first, the price seems high, relative to other cleaners. We also have two yellow labs that shed through out the year. It was down to the dogs or me. Dog hair on the rugs, hair on the furniture, hair everywhere. The cleaner arrived in 13 days after it was ordered. It took about ten minutes to put the Animal together. My daughter and I followed the directions.

We first tried the vacuum in the upright position in our living room, which had been vacuumed about four days earlier. The machine picked up so much dog hair and dust that it filled up the canister about half way. We both were very surprised. We then tried the hair attachment on the furniture. It took some effort but the dog hair was removed. Our next challenge was the steps going up stairs. The wand attachment worked as advertised. We got to the top, while the Animal stayed at the landing. The design of the hose attachment is very clever. We have not tried the ZORB cleaner or the spot remover at this point. These items come with Purple Animal.

The furniture attachment and the hard surface attachment are loose items and do not attach directly to the animal when not in use. The 3 smaller attachments attach directly to the Animal.

This device is very well designed. The construction is very good. The appearance is a bit different but you get use to it quickly. The animal is easy to use, and very easy to clean. There are no bags and no mess to deal with.

Overall, this is a very good machine and the best vacuum that we have ever owned. Yes, it was worth the cost. And yes, the dogs can stay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a vacuum that can handle MY life!
With four kids, a yellow lab, and a backyard that was recently torn up, the dirt in my house was driving me crazy! I had always bought Hoover Wind Tunnels. When our last one started gasping for life after about a year and a half, I thought that maybe I should consider a commercial vacuum. I started researching vacuums and kept coming up with Dyson.

Five hundred bucks for a vacuum might seem a bit ridiculous, but I've spend over three hundred on various Hoovers that have lasted only two years or so (I have to vacuum daily!), I figured if I get four years out of this, I'll come out ahead.

Basically, I can't tell you anything that you haven't read already concerning this vacuum, only that the reviewers who said it didn't have suction should try plugging it in next time!

It's easy to handle, sucks dirt other vacuums happily leave behind, is truly gratitifying to dump (you'll see), and works as well on hardwood floors as it does on area rugs. The cord and hose are far reaching and it is very stable when using the attachments or doing the stairs. The only negative thing that I can say about this vacuum is that taking the attachment piece out of the hose is kind of a pain. I used to use the attachments as I needed them. Now I use them last so I don't need to keep putting the wand back into the hose over and over.

One review mentioned that the Dyson eats the fringe off of area rugs. This is not a problem if you switch to the hard floors settings before trying to vacuum the fringe. One thing I didn't like about my old Hoover is that the beater brush didn't stop when you used the attachments. I put a hole in my floor when I caused my Hoover to tilt while using the attachments because the friction beater brush wore a hole through the floor. The Dyson's brush stops, so there's no danger of this.

I also like the fact I'm not going to be nickeled and dimed on bags and filters. As an allergy sufferer, I'm glad that the filter is easy to wash and reuse as often as needed. When I see what the Dyson picks up on a daily basis, I can't help but think that I've staved off at least one allergy attack in our household every time I use it.

If you're in the market for a vacuum, earmark some of your tax refund, or just decide to spurge, and get the Dyson. I did, and I don't have any regrets, just really clean floors.

5-0 out of 5 stars It just sucks in the BEST WAY!!!
I purchased my Dyson last Saturday, and I have yet to put the thing away. It's just the best. Easy to put together, easy to use, and it has suction like there is no tomorrow. My condo has hardwood floors, area rugs, and two cats. The floors and rugs have never been so clean. The first time I used it, I got enough cat hair out of the rugs for a new cat! I've also noticed that there has been much less sniffling and sneazing from my husband, who is allergic to dust mites. This baby is worth every penny, and I'm extremely pleased with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vacuum out there!
I bought this vacuum today after a friend told me about it. We have a dog that sheds like crazy and my son is 7 months old and crawling. Needless to say, I needed something that would get rid of the hair! We have hardwood floors throughout our entire house and this vacuum picked up everything! It was so much easier than sweeping the floors with a broom and so much more was picked up! I would recommend this vacuum to anybody that has pets of any sort that shed. It's well worth the money! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This vacuum is amazing!
After several disappointing experiences with Hoover, I logged onto Amazon.com to check out what everyone else was saying about vacuum cleaners. Again and again, Dyson looked like my best choice, but I had a hard time rationalizing spending $400 on a vacuum.

I bit the bullet and bought the Dyson, and I'm so glad I spent the money! I vacuumed our living room and baby's room, and I was shocked and disgusted at the amount of crud, pet hair and dirt hiding in our carpet! I thought I kept a somewhat clean house!

Getting the hose attachment ready for use takes a little practice, but it works wonders! I won't go into what the Dyson sucked up along my baseboards, but they've never looked so good.

Please...buy this vacuum! You won't regret it, and you can say goodbye to "add-ons;" no bags or filters to buy! I enjoy vacuuming again, because I can actually see the good it's doing by how much dirt gets into the canister!

Thank you, Dyson!

3-0 out of 5 stars Are the other reviewers Dyson employees?
I bought this item after reading the ridiculously overinflated reviews on this site and on the epinions site. I think these people must have been hired to write these reviews-- some of them even sound similar to each other. What I've found, after a few days of using this item, is:
PROS: On carpet only, absolutely great suction, better than any vacuum cleaner I've ever owned. Very easy dirt disposal-- you just detach the canister and hold it over a trash can. It is quieter than you'd think, considering the suction. Also a big plus is that you supposedly don't ever have to clean the filter. The Dyson sucked up a lot more into the clear canister than my other canister vacuum, which was really surprising, since when you take it out of the box it is a flimsy plastic piece of crap. Which brings me to the cons:
CONS: crummy plastic construction, a cord that DOESN'T RETRACT, inconvenient hose extension, vacuum has to be right OVER the dirt to suck it up from bare floor, expensive, etc. etc. In short, if suction of large pieces is your main concern (as it is mine, since i have large pieces of hay and litter from my pets) then this is your vacuum. I certainly didn't find, as I read in all the reviews here, that the suction is so great that it's difficult to use this vacuum on area rugs. I like this and will keep it, but it's not a very good value, in my opinion. It's just the only vacuum I've found that will take up all the hay and junk-- and I haven't used it long enough to know if it will last. Also I like the fact that you don't have to clean the filter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Vacuum!
This is one of the worst vacuum cleaners I have ever used. Don't believe the hype! It is very painful to use. It is difficult to go from a hard floor to carpet or from the carpet to the rug as it automatically adjusts, whereas most vacuums you can just tilt back and it does the work for you. With this vac, you have to pick it up! People with bad backs beware! You also have to unwrap the entire long, long cord to use ANY of the nozzles. I have owned this vacuum less than a year and am very dissatisfied with this purchase. In addition to the design problems it is falling apart and, unlike Mr Dyson says, has lost its suction. I used to love to vacuum but this vacuum has driven me to dread it. Please don't waste your hundreds of dollars on this machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!!!
This is the "Best" vacuum I have ever bought, & I've owned a few. I had just vacuumed that morning. I used my new Dyson that night & sucked-up quite a bit in the canister. I guess my Dirt Devil's not cutting it! This vacuum is a nice solid weight & not nearly as loud as other's. The carpet looks like it was just cleaned! I know my home is cleaner now & I believe the Dyson will be worth every penny I paid!

5-0 out of 5 stars OH MY GOSH...THIS SO ROCKS!
I LOVE THIS VACUME! I never thought I would say that about a vacume but hey, never say never! This is so wonderful! It cleans- I mean REALLY cleans the floor! It self adjusts, and is easy to empty! It is very lightweight and it is so convient and well made! I have a 1 year old and this vacume gets used alot and I actually enjoy vacumming!!! SO WORTH THE MONEY!!! Get it and don't waste money on another machine! 5 BIG GOLD STARS!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic vacuum! And this is an HONEST review!
First I have to say to Laura from VA, who wrote an earlier "review", that it's not right for you to come on here and accuse people of planting false reviews. My wife and I recently bought a Dyson DC07 and I can tell you that yes, it is THAT good. How do I know you don't work for Hoover? The obvious reason for the numerous rave reviews on the internet for this Dyson vacuum, is that it's a great product that does what it's supposed to do better than most others. As far as Consumer Reports giving it a low score, that's because they are BIG on safety. So much so, that unless a product is totally idiot proof, they will score it low. Yes, if you are stupid enough to push the canister release button while carrying it, it will drop. Duh. Also, Consumer Reports seems to always give higher marks to "value" priced items and look down on premium priced goods.
We couldn't be happier with the Dyson. We bought it to replace a 3 year old Dirt Devil bagless upright. The Dyson cleans better, is quieter, seems made better, is easier to empty without any mess AND you never need to buy replacement HEPA filters! And guess what....I DON'T work for Dyson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
We bought this vacuum as a replacement for our high-end, high priced Hoover. The Hoover had a lot of power, but was very heavy and was prone to falling over and damaging walls, furniture and its user. We always thought it (the Hoover) was doing a good job until we got our Dyson. The amount of fine dirt and dust the Dyson picked up from our berber carpet was amazing. It works great on oriental rugs as well. The wall-to-wall carpets in our bedroom are noticable fresher and cleaner after just one vacuuming with the Dyson.

The only negative we have found is that you have to use the floor tool to clean hardwood floors. Turing off the beater brush and using the bare floor mode doesn't work. (The unit won't pick up crumbs and other typical kitchen floor dirt in this mode.)

We highly recommend this vacuum. It cleans extremely well, is user friendly, and is very quiet relative to other vaccum cleaners.

5-0 out of 5 stars PLAIN PERFECT
AFTER TRYING THE BISSELL AND HOOVER - I ENDED UP GETTING THIS GREAT MACHINE - I PAID OVER $475.00 - BIG CHUNK OUT OF MY CHECK BOOK - BUT IT SUCKS EVERY PIECE OF DIRT IN THE CARPET AND FLOOR. HOPE IT LASTS... GREAT BUY - AND ITS NOT ALL HYPE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skeptic becomes a convert
I have three cats (one is a longhair), my husband and I both have long hair, and I was skeptical that anything would be able to handle the challenges of our home. I've tried a Hoover, a Kirby, various Eurekas and a couple of different Dirt Devils, and a Kenmore, some cannister and some uprights, over the years. I figured, what the heck? I can always send it back if it doesn't work out. I ordered the Dyson DC07 at the end of June, and here it is, the middle of July, and I can't imagine why I wasted the time and energy on anything else. Our hardwood floors have never been cleaner, and the carpets are no longer in danger of being sent out to be cleaned. It's much quieter and lighter-weight than I had expected from some of the reviews I read before ordering, and is relatively simple to operate, although the assembly and tool switching instructions could use some fine-tuning. A labeled picture with arrows pointing to the different buttons would be helpful, also. But this bad boy really SUCKS! I haven't had any clogging issues, and emptying the containment chamber couldn't be easier. Of course, I do typically have to empty the chamber a couple of times during use, so that's a big plus for me.

Since it is so easy to handle and to use, I find myself vaccuming more often, and spending less time vaccuming. That's GOTTA be a good thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dyson vaccuum
I have pets; 2 cats and 2 dogs to be specific. I use to have buy a new vaccuum every other year, and even when new they did not do a great job picking up pet hair. I'd have to unglog the dog hair every cleaning from around the rotating brushes. It was a nightmare! I hated vaccuuming! But since I've bought the Dyson "yellow" model, (less bells & whistles than this model), NO PROBLEMS! What a blessing this vaccuum is!

I love the features; bagless, easy to empty, can retrieve items accidently vaccuumed, great filter, my only complaint is that the hose is not long enough to reach all areas easily, but small price to pay!

If you own pets, this might just be the last vaccuum you ever own! Thank you for the best vaccuum ever!!!! ... Read more
