Amazon.com Review

This nearly foolproof waffle iron makes it easy to fix decadent, kid-beloved breakfast waffles. This appliance forms Belgian style waffles, arguably the best kind, with extra-deep pockets to fill with butter and syrup or yogurt and fruit. Its auto-thermostat is alert with a light when the iron is ready for filling; the same light again indicates when the waffle is ready to be eaten, while the nonstick grids turn out individual, nicely cooked treats with very little effort. This chrome-plated iron can be put away flat or standing upright, so it fits in almost any kitchen cupboard. --Maria Dolan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Killer waffles, and they don't stick
The difference between Belgian and regular waffles is the depth of the hole in the waffle; Belgians are very deep. This makes for a light and crisp waffle. (In contrast German and American style waffles are more tender and flexible.)

This waffle iron is nicely compact and absolutely perfect for making delicious waffles. But I don't like the included recipe. Instead, I use this one:

2 egg whites, whip stiff
Mix next ingredients and fold egg whites into the batter:
2 egg yolks
3/4 c. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
4 tbsp. butter melted (waffles have a lot of fat for crispness so they are a treat...watch out.)
pinch of clove powder

Note that traditional Belgian waffles are made with a yeasted dough and can be done the night before. Toppings can be ice cream and chocolate sauce, powdered sugar, apple butter, or cherry pie filling, heated, with whipped cream, or just whipped cream and powdered sugar.

Either way, this waffler is just great for a party or fancy brunch.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
I purchased this waffle maker based on reviews and so far have only been completely satified with how the waffles turned out about 50% of the time. The back "burners" do not cook the waffle through as well as the front one when I use a thick batter and that part comes out doughy no matter how high I set the heat. A thin batter works better but I can still tell the differnce in the back portion of the waffle. I am disappointed with it and will probably purchase a different one at a later point. Next time I will not throw away the box until I've made sure it does what it's supposed to! If that wasn't the case I would rate it a 5 because it is easy to use, doesn't stick as long as it's been sprayed w/cooking spray prior to use, it is fast and the tones tell you when it is ready to use and when it is done. Perhaps mine is defective.

5-0 out of 5 stars The King (or Queen) of waffle irons!
This thing is heavy duty. Not your typical 14.99 cheapy from the local discount store. And it's well worth it! We've used it many times, cleanup's not a problem and when you want to make something special for a treat, it's easy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Kitchen Addition
I gotta be honest, I bought this as a Mother's Day gift for my wife. She's probably thinking it's the greatest gift she's ever gotten because now I'm constantly asking her if she wants me to whip her up a batch of waffles! It stores easily and clean-up has not been an issue. There is a small rim to catch overfilling accidents and so far it's kept the spills to a minimum. Learning curve is very gentle. The "Waffle Tone" actually does a very nice job of telling you when it's done. The waffles themselves are very good and I was extremely pleased with how evenly it cooks both sides. You cannot tell the top from the bottom. One recommendation is to go easy on the spray/oil/grease. The non-stick surface works very well so too much additive causes the waffle to not brown/cook quite as evenly. Very little practice required to get it right.

Instruction book has a few recipes which are pretty good. Standard pancake mixes have a waffle option on them that works really well and takes half the time to prepare (just add egg and oil to the regular mix). I added a little vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar and..........well, I'm getting hungry again.

Very good choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This waffler makes perfect belgians every time and I don't think I can live without it.

Let me get two small complaints out of the way. The dial has numbers from 1-6 on 1/4 of the dial, but the dial turns entirely, so it is a little confusing. Just make sure you line it up with one of the numbers. Secondly, it has a loud beep that dies off at the end. It sounds very odd and I don't know if it is defective, or if that is the intended "waffle tone". But despite these complaints, I highly recommend this model.

Once hot, on setting 4 it takes about 2-3 minutes to cook each waffle. And it doesn't take long to get hot.

A few tips:
* Buy Krusteas Belgian waffle mix
* Buy one of those plastic handled scrub brushes for two dollars at walmart and give it a quick brush after using it. I find that using it dry cleans it up nicely and gets in the crevices. It also gets rid of some of the old brown oil that can build.
* Definitely use pam or some spray. You don't necessarily need to put it on before every single waffle, but definitely before the first one. I forgot to do this one time and i had to chisel the pieces out.
* Strawberries and whipped cream. The frozen stawberries are good enough. Pecans and syrup. Blueberries... Endless possibilities.
* Try adding chocolate chips right on top of the batter after you pour it on the iron.

Use it for dinner and invite some friends, they won't be disappointed! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

This dandy waffler is a hoot and turns out perfect waffles every time. The clever ready light signals when the waffler is ready for the batter and again when the waffle is cooked just right, so there's no guesswork. The waffler also comes with a terrific little booklet that gives clear directions and some tasty recipes to get you started. It should only take you a waffle or two to get the hang of how much batter to pour into the grid and how to smooth it evenly over Mickey's face and ears. To lift out a perfect Mickey, be sure to loosen the ears first and work down the waffle from there. And always flip it over onto a plate: the bottom of the waffle is Mickey's best side. When your waffle feast is done, cleanup is a snap; the silicone nonstick surface really works. If a bit of batter does stick, just dab on some cooking oil and leave the waffler overnight. The next day it will wipe clean with a paper towel. The waffler was designed to stand on end for convenient storage, but we think it's a knockout and should be displayed on the kitchen counter for all to see. --C. Whitney-Ward ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hit With the Kids!
Using this waffler has become a Saturday morning tradition at our house. Cooks evenly, produces nice waffles. The only drawback is that it takes awhile to cook a family batch of waffles, so we use an additional (regular) waffler as well, to speed things up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it
This product is a lot of fun.

A bell would be nice to tell you when it's done but no big deal. Shouldn't be walking out of the kitchen with something like this on anyway. You do hear a click when the light turns on.

We use a large water bottle to dispense the batter. That way you can squeeze it out of a small opening and distribute it evenly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Hit
This has made me an instant celebrity in the eyes of my granddaughters!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
For my birthday my daughter gave me a Villaware Mickey Waffler. The waffler was intended to replace our well used Vitantonio Model 1950 Mickey waffler. Our family grew up with that waffler and used it for many years.

The Villaware waffler is quite a disappointment. The issue is not its operation. The issue is the image of Mickey that is formed in the waffle. The image is very shallow, resulting in a waffle that doesn't even look like a waffle. My daughter had one of the waffles, and even she was disappointed with the waffler. I had previously hesitated to return it because it was a gift from her. It has now been returned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved This Find
This is a wonderful addition to my Disney collection but I use this one. It makes the waffles - from pancake mix in a box - and everyone is perfect. I use spray (pam) no oil and there is no sticking to the surface. Now I need the larger one, (5 grands), but I use the chefs suggestion, keep them in the oven until all ar ready. 5 thumbs up ... Powered by a 1,200-watt heating element and solidly constructed of cast aluminum for evenly distributing and retaining heat, this waffle maker bakes four 4-1/4-inch waffles at once and readily releases them from grids coated with a rugged nonstick surface. A control on the front provides seven browning settings from light to dark. A red light shows when power is on, and a green light signals when the grids are properly heated to receive batter. A tone sounds when waffles are browned according to the selected setting. The waffler measures 10 inches wide, 3-1/2 inches high, and 13 inches deep (including thestay-cool handle). For compact storage, it stands upright and there's a cord-wrap with plug-holder underneath. The waffler carries a three-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this wafflemaker!
The appearance of the wafflemaker is great...silver, shiny, modern motif. The bright red and green lights, as well as the bell that rings when the waffles are done are great thoughts, too. HOWEVER...I've now tried 2 of this model. Both have failed miserably in making a waffle...one burned every waffle, no matter the setting. The other cooked only one side of the waffles ( and we tried various recipes). I would not recommend this one, gang, until the bugs are worked out!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this waffle maker but ny kids love it more
My wife bought this for me on Fathers Day and we have used it at least three to four times a month since we got it.
This is one nice Waffle maker, built very sturdy. I've never had a waffle stick, just set the automatic timer that lets you know when the waffles are done, reach in with a plastic fork (don't want to scratch the non-stick surface) then pop them loose and they come right out. Not like my old waffle maker where I had to spray it every time I used it.
Just be sure to follow instructions when you first get it about how to treat the surface.
I would definitely recommend this product 5 stars + + + + +.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it!
I won't repeat the detailed reviews below, but they're right on target. This machine is a wonderful addition to my breakfast (and dinner and dessert!) options. I remember my mother struggling to use (and store) the old waffle iron when I was a kid. That kept me from getting one until now. The VillaWare works great. The waffles don't stick, it's easy to clean and it stores upright. What more could I ask for?

2-0 out of 5 stars Tried it, and returned it
This was my second waffle iron, first one a different brand. I did not like this one, it has a "waffle tone" that sounds like the smoke alarm going off, it went off when it preheated, when the waffle was ready, when the waffle iron cooled a little and reheated, it went off way too often. Made all of us nervous. Waffle quality did not come out great, either. Disappointed, still looking for a belgian waffle iron instead. But will definetly not buy one with that awful waffle tone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality Product
My wife likes Belgian waffles and I like the ordinary kind. We had been using a sunbeam waffle maker that we got for a wedding present and a Black and Decker Belgian waffle maker that we'd picked up in the Eighties. Both of these were getting pretty ratty. I replaced them for our 30th anniversary with a Hoffritz HZBW4 4-Slice Belgian waffler and a Villaware 2001C classic waffler. I liked the looks of the Hoffritz, but couldn't find it in a regular waffle. Anyway, we've been using them for a couple of months now, and here's the take on them:
They're both great, but I like the Hoffritz better. I like the digital controls. It takes a little longer to cook a waffle than the Villaware, but just long enough to take care of the waffle from the Villaware before the Hoffritz signals it's done. They both have audible "ready" signals and lights. The Hoffritz is quite a bit larger than the Villaware. They both look good. They both cook great waffles. The Villaware has kind of a tacky mechanical lever for setting how "done" you want your waffle; this lever does not ratchet, so it is easy to accidentally change the setting. This is the main reason I don't give this product a "5". The Hoffritz has a button for a "crispy" waffle; I haven't noticed that it does anything different when set; set at "3" it makes the waffles crispy like my wife prefers. I like my waffles less crispy; I've been using the Villaware set at "5," but I think I'm going to try jacking it up a little, as the waffles are pretty pale, although "done". The outside of the Villaware seems to get hotter than the Hoffritz; and stays hot a lot longer; maybe because it's made of cast aluminum rather than the Hoffritz's stainless steel. I read a review of a waffler where the person was complaining about the outside getting dangerously hot. As far as I know that's true of all wafflers, and neither of these are an exception. Bottom line, they're both imminently satisfying, if I had to choose between the two, I'd want them to make a Hoffritz that cooks "regular" waffles. ... Read more

From whole-wheat waffles with fresh fruit to buttermilk waffles with syrup to chocolate waffles with whipped cream, waffles are as healthy or as decadent as you choose to make them. But one thing is constant: the difference between homemade and frozen waffles is like that between sirloin and shoe leather. There's no longer any need to be afraid of making waffles, because Villaware's heart waffler practically makes them for you: an auto-light tells you when to pour the batter and when to remove the waffles, and an auto-thermostat controls the temperature so you don't risk wasting first attempts. The nonstick coating reduces every recipe's fat content, justifying more butter, syrup, and whipped cream later, and a spill trough helps keep mess at bay. The darker-colored nonstick surface also enables better waffle browning. The nonstick surface will not easily scratch, but should be cleaned with a soft cloth or waffle brush with plastic bristles. As an added bonus, each waffle is in a cute heart shape. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Far from perfect...
I already had an electric waffle iron made by Salton that was turning out great looking and delicious tasting *round* waffles. But because of the rave review I read here (plus it was nearing Valentine's day), I gave in and bought this Villaware heart-shaped waffle iron.

And sure it worked - but not as good as I expected for this price. As it has five different temperature settings (supposedly gives you control over how soft/crisp you want it), I tried out three: At "2" the batter was not yet set in the middle when the "waffle tone" sounded. At "4" it was too browned even for my husband's taste. I can only imagine how runny "1" would be and how burnt "5" would be - seriously, why do they give you five settings when only one of them work? At "3" the waffle tasted close to the way I like it, but even then, like all the other settings I tried on this, the color was uneven throughout the surface of the waffle. There were patches that were very pale and spots that were a medium brown.

The other bummer is this: It is impossible to make perfect heart shapes. I tried different consistencies in the batter and really attempted to fill in the scalloped edge, but as it cooks, the batter rises unevenly and when you divide the finished waffle into five little hearts, they're always a little crooked.

So - while this one certainly works and may thrill people who have no prior waffle making experience or are simply less demanding, its relatively high price only brings extra features (heart shape, temp control, "waffle tone" alarm...) that are unnecessary and don't work well. I find my cheaper Salton model... still works much better.

My humble advice: Go for a simpler model without all these bells and whistles, all you need to look for is a good quality non-stick surface. The doness can be easily controlled by how long you cook the waffle (the amount od steam is a good indication). I will stay loyal to my old waffle iron from now on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foolproof
Makes perfect waffles everytime. Love the look and the taste of the waffles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waffles are too thin / flat
As a romantic, I purchased this heart shaped waffle maker. The flaw is that the waffles come out too flat, with not enough indentation and texture. The waffles were more pancake-like than waffle-like.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yum
great machine, alarm is not to loud, waffels are wonderful. Kids and wife enjoy the heart shaped waffels, well worth the money. I almost rated it 5 stars.......

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect waffles everytime - even for beginners
I had never made waffles before, and after reciving this as a wedding gift, I knew that was the time. It couldn't have been easier. I set it at about 3.5 and it lets me know when it's properly heated, lets me know when my waffles are done, and it's no mess! I couldn't be happier with it.
The ONLY downfall is you can't surprise someone with breakfast in bed because the alert is pretty loud, but it sure keeps you making perfect waffles! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars booklet
I like the machine, but it arrived without a recipe booklet/manual. If anyone can help, please e-mail.

5-0 out of 5 stars VillaWare 5230, marvelous!
After searching for a product to make pizelles, I purchased this one, as it could do three things and the price was great. It arrived promptly (even though I live in Hawaii, and ordered for Christmas, late). Its easy to use, way easy to clean. Makes delicious, fast waffles. Making a sandwhich was kind of messy, but it cleaned up by just rinsing! FAST/EASY/SIMPLE/GREAT QUALITY/NAME BRAND.
Amazon rocks!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Concept - Very Poor Quality
I love the idea of a multitasking machine but the quality is just not there. I have returned two of these bakers because they were cracked on the inside accross the screw holes which caused the plates to fall out. The second one I purchased was not only cracked but the latch would not stay closed. I used the first one to make waffles and pizzelles. They baked very slowly, much slower than the recipes/directions indicated and only the bottom (which gets hotter than the top) would get crispy and brown. VillaWare has a long way to go to perfect this product.

2-0 out of 5 stars There's got to be a better waffle iron out there
I liked the idea of having 3 machines in one. I never got a chance to try the pizzelle maker because it broke before I got around to it. The sandwich feature seemed to be the best part, but it was not deep enough for anything other than square, storebought squishy bread if you wanted to close it. This is actually what led to its demise. They do warn you not to force it closed, but when you have an 11 yr old in the house sometimes warnings are not heeded when a grilled cheese sandwich is on the line. She pushed on it, the plastic housing broke setting the hinge off and exposing the wires. It is amazing though that this item is not as strong as a grilled cheese sandwich! The real disappointment though was that the waffles took forever to make and when they were done the bottoms were browner than the tops. It does not seem to be capable of making crisp waffles either. The advice that one wait for the steam to stop is useless as they are still not done. Also, there is no color setting, no beeper, and the cord storage is awkward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does all 3 well
Despite the previous review I love this item. It makes crispy waffles with nice deep wells for syrup. It's pizzelle plate is perfect. In 100 seconds you can pop off a soft pizzelle, and either lay it on a rack to harden or drape over a custard cup for a shaped one. Recipe is tasty and easy to vary. Only needs one change in the recipe book--tell people that these cookies harden after they're baked--within 10 seconds actually. Everyone love the results with this cooker. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect waffle every time!
I've tried many different waffle irons over the years and this, by far, is the best one. I've used it several times so far and every single waffle, no matter what recipe I use, comes out perfect. Nothing sticks and when the "done" tone sounds, it's ready!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like a fresh waffle, buy this!!
The Villaware Perfect Waffler 3000 is absolutely terrific! I'd been living on Eggo Waffles so long that I'd forgotten how delicious a freshly made waffle could be. This machine heats quickly (the tweet-tweet whistle is a nice touch) and in just minutes, a crispy waffle is ready to eat. I like that I can change the darkness (and crispiness) of each waffle and that the tweet-tweet tells me that it's done if I'm preparing other breakfast items simultaneously. No burnt waffles for me ... Mine are "perfect" everytime just like Villaware claims. When I wear this one out, I'm buying another one just like it. I must say, I LOVE this waffler. Anyone who doesn't like this machine must have gotten a defective one. Mine's just fabulous and my family agrees ... The price is great, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this Waffle Baker
Just bought this one. I love the fact that the temperature settings are easy to adjust, the knob is large and firm enough that you can tell what you're doing. My kids love the "tweety tweet" sound when the waffles are done. There is a light to watch, but you don't have to! Easy to keep clean. Non-stick is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great waffles - annoying beeps
I think this is a great product - by the time you are pouring the batter in for waffle #3 on the first day, you have mastered the details. It is easy to use and makes wonderful waffles - however the beeps are just so discordant and loud that one wonders why the manufacturer could not have found a more pleasing sound. I definitely would not use this early in the morning!

5-0 out of 5 stars A long search finally ended
I have literally been looking for years for a good waffle maker. That search ended with the Villaware 3000. I agree with the other reviews that say that the Villaware delivers perfect waffles from the first (even the initial throw-away waffle). Gone are my past frustrations with waffles sticking and pulling apart. I have used the waffle iron several times and have not had a hint of a problem yet. In light of the criticisms of the sound and volume of the ready tone, when I first used the waffle iron I braced myself and stood back a little. While the tone is high-pitched, anyone who would toss the waffle iron out on that basis is perhaps just a little overly sensitive. It allows you to go to another room and not have to stand watch over the iron as it cooks. And while the dial on top is a little loose when the iron is cold, it does have reference numbers and it does have limits on how far it can be turned in each direction (it does not spin endlessly). The dial can definitely be used to make a difference in how dark the waffle is. I highly recommend this waffle iron. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Waffler Makes more than RoseWaffles
This waffler turned out to be a big surprize. I got it to make sweet rolls from my gluten-free, relatively low-carb recipes I used in other wafflers. The shape would be nice with cinnamon and nuts. It is. It works really well for this purpose. But I had no idea I would also be baking great egg omelets in it, filled with chopped fresh vegetables that cooked through perfectly. It also makes great cakes. Make some yeast "bread" in it - works like a charm, whether gluten free or the real McCoy. Try baking a lentil loaf. Beautiful with sauce. How about a meat-loaf? Works great. You can split the waffle for sandwiches or for layering cake. You can bake a little cookie dough in it only filling partway and have a lacy cookie. Bake it longer and it will get crisp. Make thick chocolate "cookies" and fill with ice cream. Wow.

All of this is great as long as you can live with the way runny batter drips through the bottom and makes a big oozy mess, and the alarm beeps at you every time the heat goes off, whether it's ready or not. Hence only four stars.

I can live with it - in fact I use it for more things every day. But I give it five stars for creative possibilities. I am still exploring and nowhere done. How about putting in beaten egg with a little corn masa, strewing chiles and cheese, topping it with more egg/masa - chiles rellenos? Haven't tried it yet, but I think I will go do that now.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice waffles plus wake-the-dead alarm
I tried out my new waffle maker this morning. Started out using the recommended setting, which just left a nasty doughy mess. Bumped up the setting 3 times until I got something that resembled a waffle. It is supposed to beep to let you know when it is done. Actually, it beeps every time it cycles "on", every time the green light comes on you get a series of really loud beeps like a smoke detector. It's not like I went outside and left the waffles cooking and needed a reminder! If you lift the lid the first time it beeps, it just makes a big nasty mess. By about the second series of beeps, the waffle should be about ready. The design is nice and unusual, an added plus is that it's attractive without being having a licensed character or trademark on it. (Such as Mickey Mouse, Hello Kitty, or "Bam" Emeril). The waffles turned out really nicely, once I figured out the setting I liked, but the beeps are amazingly annoying - not good for anyone in an apartment with thin walls or if you have people still asleep in the house! ... Amazon.com Review

This dandy waffler is a hoot and turns out four perfect waffles every time. The clever ready light signals when the waffler is ready for the batter and again when the waffle is cooked just right, so there's no guesswork. The waffler also comes with a terrific little booklet that gives clear directions and some tasty recipes to get you started. These waffles would be a perfect treat for a children's birthday party. For storage, just stand the waffler on its side and tuck it into a cupboard. Or display it on a shelf--we think it's too nifty to hide! --C. 5-0 out of 5 stars Just like Disney World
If your kids like the Mickey waffles/pancakes at Disney World, this is great. Flawless results everytime.

2-0 out of 5 stars Price-gouged by the mouse!
I bought this waffle iron on the strength of the other reviews, and it has been a disappointment. Here are the negatives not mentioned:

1. Price. For this price I would have expected more bells and whistles than Mickey's face.

2. No chime. I bought this in haste after looking at so many waffle irons I was cross-eyed and I didn't notice beforehand. Oops.

3. No adjustment for lighter or darker waffles. This coupled with no chime means I must babysit the waffle iron and not distract myself with household goings-on. Not an easy task with 5 children!

4. Metalic surface is HOT. Very beautiful to look at when cool, but dangerous in a house with children.

5. Waffle iron top-heavy when lid is up. Again, dangerous in a house with children.

6. Waffles are much smaller than they look in the picture. This may actually be a positive for some people with small children, but I thought I'd mention it as it was a negative in our large family.

7. Waffles can take up to 3 minutes to cook. Also a negative as I was looking for one of those cool 90-second wafflers.

These negatives wouldn't have been such a big deal if this waffle iron wasn't so darned expensive! I'd have been okay happy at a third of the price. But for this kind of money, the iron should predetermine my hankering for waffles and mix up the batter for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars A sure kid pleaser!
I took my niece to Walt Disney World and she fell in love with the minature Mickey Mouse waffles. I was delighted to find the waffle maker available to the general public and it makes waffles just like those at Walt Disney World. Sure to put a smile on the face of kids and adults alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Mickey!
My little girl loves Mickey Mouse and what a treat it was to give her Mickey Mouse waffles for breakfast. She absolutely loves having these waffles and we love the smiles. This makes our third waffle iron and this one produces the most smiles by far.

Amazon.com Review

As my tastes expand, extra space in the kitchen shrinks, filling with specialized appliances. Fortunately, this versatile grill is a space saver, cooking something for every meal: restaurant-style Belgian waffles, paninis, sausages, or grilled meats and fish. The secret is the reversible grid. One side is a four-square waffle iron for waffles, while the other neatly grills sandwiches or paninis. To grill sausages, bacon, salmon, vegetables, or pancakes, just open the grill so both sides lay flat. The nonstick grids prevent crumbling waffles, are easy to clean, and allow for lower-fat grilling, justifying more whipped cream on your waffles, or extra cheese in your sandwich. The raised rib grill drains fat as food grills--a further fat reduction. Recipes are included to guide you through a variety of waffles, French toast, paninis, T-bone steaks, and grilled vegetables. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars If you want a nonstick waffle maker, consider another
I've had this waffle maker for almost 5 years, and it does make decent waffles but I am sure there is something better out there. This waffle maker has 2 main problems (and it seems as if many others agree): 1) poor nonstick coating and 2)low temperature. The nonstick coating on this waffle maker is a joke. Even when I add more oil to my recipes than called for the waffles will stick unless I coat the grids in oil before making each waffle. You have to coat the grids very quickly, too, so as not to allow the grids to cool to much. The temperature must be on the highest setting to make waffles, and it usually takes 10-12 minutes (depending on how much batter I pour in) to get the waffle to the appropriate doneness. If the grids are well coated in oil and the grids are hot when you pour in your batter, this waffler does make a decent waffle. I think it just requires more effort than it should. The griddle works better than the waffler, but just be careful again with the not-so-nonstick coating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good waffles but takes a long time to cook
It is true that this waffle maker requires a bit of practice to get a good waffle. It needs a good solid 5 minutes or more to warm up. You need to cook waffles at the highest temperture setting. You need to pour just the right amount of batter in (make sure the whole area is covered) or else they will not get crisp. You need to spray Pam on both sides regardless of how much oil or butter is in the batter. You need to be patient. They take a good long time to cook, sorry, I have not actually timed it yet but it is probably between 5-10 minutes.
Because the inserts are removable (the best feature) for other cooking methods, the hinges are floating - that is why some people note that the lids don't match up evenly. It doesn't really effect the waffles if you lay the lid down properly. Hope that helps.
If is kind of a pain but it makes good waffles.

1-0 out of 5 stars I finally tossed mine in the trash where it belongs!
I've owned this alleged waffle maker for years now. About once a year I break it out to make waffles. The one I have heats fine but the non-stick surface it terrible. I've tried the spray-on vegetable coating and even brushing the hot plates with vegetable oil and nothing works. I have tried different type of waffle batter and still nothing works.

After I get frustrated and clean the waffle maker up I usually put it away until the next year. But not any more, off to the trash it went. It may be good for some other uses, but a waffle iron that won't make waffles in my opinion is useless.

Even though I've shopped on Amazon since the beginning this is the first review that I've written. I've checked the past review of this product and found a "Top 10" reviewer that gave it 5 stars. Of the more then 1600 reviews that she gave, all where 5 stars. She is either extremely lucky or full of the stuff that my ex-waffle maker made.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its a bit low power for crisp waffles...
I bought this lovely waffle iron in a pinch, needing a second iron for a brunch party - and its crisp modular design wooed me away from purchasing a second Hoffritz.

This machine makes a great panini grill with the optional grill plates, does a good job with keeping bacon mess to a roar with the griddle plates, and makes a fair grilled cheese. It does not, however, make good waffles.

"The Best" team of chefs, the ones famous for testing all sorts of equipment and then choosing the best one, HATED this machine for all the same reasons I am luke warm about it:
- Lousy heat recovery. The iron recovers slowly after adding batter.
- Uneven heat. The top is consistantly lighter than the bottom.
- Low overall temp. Waffles don't get cooked fast enough so they get cakey.
- The top edges of the iron never fill with batter because of the lower temp.

Since none of these issues are present in my Hoffritz quad waffle machine, nor my 2 waffle Villaware, I have to assume that this multipurpose model was designed to do too many things and the quality of the waffles was sacrificed.

As a general purpose hot sandwich machine, it does pretty well. It is very good looking, is easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store - but for waffles, the Hoffritz is better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea - but Built Like a Toy
Actually, many toys are better built than this product.
This products looks great on paper, but is not even remotely a quality-built product. Villaware makes some good products, I have no idea what happened with this one, but if this is a sign of where they're going... ... Read more

There's no reason to eat cardboard frozen waffles, even if your early attempts at homemade waffles resulted in batter-covered counters and a garbage pail of undercooked or burnt failures. VillaWare's Belgium Waffler guides you through the process: a light tells you when to pour the batter, and a "waffle tone" sounds when waffles are done. A steam guard reduces the risk of burned hands, the temperature control reduces the risk of burnt waffles, an extra-wide spill trough keeps batter spills at bay. The nonstick grids and chrome exterior are easy to clean. Designed for the thicker, fluffier, Belgian waffles, this waffler has a nonstick coating to reduce every recipe's fat content, justifying more butter, syrup, and whipped cream later. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Waffler Maker!!
Overall, this product is a great and consistent waffle maker. Recipes are simple, clear and easy to follow. The end result is my kids making waffles for breakfast every Saturday and Sunday morning.

Some features that allow this to be a great product. 1) An audible alarm that lets everyone know the waffle is done, without having to open/close the lid to check. 2) The non-stick surface is exactly that, a non-stick surface!! 3) Easy clean up, nothing sticks, nothing to scrub. 4) Easy to follow recipes, that don't call for weird or un-common items. 5) Great, consistent waffles that the cook is proud to serve to a hungry family!

A great product, would recommend this to all.

3-0 out of 5 stars MISSING
Except for NOT having an adjustable temperature control, a feature I was counting on, this waffle iron works well. The only other waffle iron I have bought in the past, that I liked, had this feature and I could make crisp waffles on a regular basis. Using the Villaware, and my standard recipe, my first waffle comes out limp. I will have to learn how to add more time for warmup and for cooking. The handy warning beep comes too early. The technical specifications listing clearly states 'adjustable temperature control' and should be corrected, so others are not misled. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Perfect for large, family breakfasts, this waffler makes six golden brown, deep-pocketed Belgian waffles at a time. The waffle grids heats up quickly and evenly due to the extra-thick die-cast aluminum surface, and an adjustable control offers seven different browning temperatures for lighter or darker waffles. For safety, a red light remains on for the duration of your cooking time and a green light illuminates when the appliance has reached the desired heat (about 8 to 10 minutes). The commercial-style handle stays cool during cooking and presses straight down to completely enclose the lid over your waffles. A high-quality nonstick coating on the waffle grids ensures that waffles lift off easily and that the waffler is easy to clean. In addition, the waffler has a trough that catches any overflow batter during cooking and makes cleanup a little easier.

While the high-polish aluminum exterior on this appliance is beautiful and durable, it also heats up to the same temperature as the waffler’s interior. The plastic-coated handle offers some protection from the heat, but cooks still must exercise caution to prevent burns from the lid or sides of the handle. The Uno Belgian waffler stands upright for storage but is still fairly large and heavy so cooks will want to ensure that they have adequate space for it. This product is covered by VillaWare under a full one-year warranty. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars One word for this and it starts with S
Come back here and write a review as soon as you get over feeling foolish for not having listened to these reviews.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money. They should be ashamed.
I too bought this based on the good reviews. Now I see the bad reviews popping up. Too late for me but not for you! Don't buy this. Although it does seem very nice when you first unpack it, it does not perform anywhere near it's price expectation. I have returned it after several frustrating sessions of angry kids and wasted batter.

My experience has been much the same as the last 2 reviewers. But I want to add one thing. The cord on this unit seems thin and cheap. That is an indicator of poor power management right there as something that would need the power this hulk needs to be and stay hot would have a more substantial cord.

I echo the other negative reviews, do not buy this, you will be sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolute piece of expensive JUNK!
I bought one thinking the larger size and villaware name would yield great results. I presently use 2 small cuisinarts to pump out enough waffles to keep the masses happy. I cannot tell you strongly enough what an utter failure this maker is. Just like the previous reviewer, I had it on high for several minutes and the lower parts ended up dry and burnt and the upper uncooked. Uneven, slow and way too underpowered. The top sits down unevenly and the weight allows for little flexibility in top rising. It is a shame as the manufacturing and materials seems to be very high quality, but the design is horrid. Proof is in the pudding, and after 8 minutes in this thing at high, the waffles still looked like pudding. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor performer or bad luck
I got this model due to the great reviews. However, due to performance problems, I had to get my first iron replaced by Villaware and the second unit has all the same problems. I plan to return it for a refund and try another model or brand. I must say that Villaware customer support was helpfull. Unfortunately, they can't deliver a workable product.

The biggest problem is the uneven cooking between the two plates. At the highest setting, the top plate could only just start to brown the waffle, while the bottom was almost black. This is not a gravity & batter problem because I flipped the iron over and the plates performed the same in their new positions. (i.e. the top of the waffle was now overdone, while the bottom was underdone)

Other minor problems include a cold spot near the center of the irons. No audible alert (as described in the manual) when the waffle is done, just a green light. The clip to keep the waffle maker closed can unclip on its own.

The non-stick surface worked very well for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
This appliance is wonderfully well built. It seems unlikely one could damage the sturdy stainless steel exterior from anything other than intentional abuse. The interior grids are likewise of a high quality, non-stick (Teflon?) material that cleans up surprisingly easily. Visually, it has a pleasing, somewhat retro (1950s) look that makes me think it could have done service in my mother's kitchen without seeming out of place.

Now, as for cooking, it is quite potent (I found none with higher wattage than its 1400 figure) and even-heating (so there are no 'hot spots') and it has a handy (albeit simple and slightly dated) manual rheostat for setting the temperature. There is a red light on the left front for power on and a green one to its right signalling that the desired temperature has been achieved.

I would like to point out that while it makes lovely waffles, it has many other uses. In our home, pressed sandwiches are the commonest call (ham and cheese pressed on a hotdog-style bun makes what we in Puerto Rico call a 'bocadillo'....yum!)

The only drawbacks are its heft (I forgive it, as I believe the weight is a factor of its good construction) & the absence of an off-on switch (why?). Despite these minor problems, the 2170 is a 5 star performer. Bon apetit! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why have a square when you can have Hearts?
These waffles look like gourmet waffles. I just love this machine. Mix up your batter (the recipe is in the instruction booklet), heat up this waffle maker, spray a little Pam and pour in the batter. That is it! The waffles come out so cute and delicious I am sure you will love them. I top them with butter and maple syrup. It will look like you slaved in the kitchen for hours when you serve this breakfast. The nonstick finish is too easy to clean and it has several settings for light or darker waffles. Determine the setting you like best and the waffle tone sounds when they are done so you can multi task in the kitchen. And, it has cord storage underneath it, it even has a spot for the plug and you can store it upright to save space. I couldn't be happer with this waffle maker. A+A+A+A+A+A+A+A+

Also, if you make waffles or pancakes don't walk, run to Williams Sonoma and pick up the "Batter Dispenser" they have. It is about $35 and well worth every penny. Pour your batter in the dispenser and just squeeze the handle to dispense the perfect amount of batter. It works similar to a flour sifter. No mess, no drips and it is stainless steel and dishwasher safe, what could be better?
