Amazon.com Review

It may seem like a contradiction, but sharp knives are the safest. With a clean edge, a knife is more predicable and easier to control. If you've purchased a top-of-the-line knife, maintaining the quality of the blade ensures maximum value from your investment. This Chef's Choice knife sharpener performs professional-quality sharpening on any knife, from gourmet knives to hunting knives--even the tips of serrated knives can be improved with this machine (for a complete sharpening of serrated knives, however, Chef's Choice recommends models 120 and 320). For top-quality edges, there are two sharpening and honing stages, which use 100% diamond abrasives, and a final polishing stage. Each stage uses precision angle guides to create a unique "Trizor-Plus" edge for maximum sharpness and durability, while a magnetic pad collects residue so the machine is easy to clean and maintain. While a sharp knife is indeed a safe knife, it's wise to use caution with your newly sharpened knives, as they'll be sharper than you expect. --Laura Cuthbert ... Read more

Features

  • Two-year household warranty
  • Three-stage precision sharpening
  • Works for gourmet chef knives, butcher knives, sporting knives
  • 100% diamond abrasive will never detemper
  • Unique "Trizor-Plus" edge for greater sharpness and durability

1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
This thing is a ...joke. Yes, I've tried everything suggested in the instuctions, including holding my hand just so. Curiously, it'll make a grocery store rubber paring knife about as sharp as it will make real carbon steel knives. My guess is, that was the design goal. If you want to sharpen your rubber knives, this is your machine. It does a lot of impressive vibrating and stuff but it doesn't really sharpen knives. If you want one of these, mine will be for sale soon on e-bay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product...
I am a carpenter, not a chef. However, as such, I know the value of sharp tools. They cut faster, easier and are much safer. A dull tool or knife is unpredictable and this makes it more dangerous than a sharp one.

My wife (a much better cook than me) and I have some high quality knives and some knives of dubious quality. I took about 1 hour and sharpened about 10 of them. The results were great. It is a little tricky to get used to holding the knife while in the slots... you are kind of balancing it in your hand instead of holding it. You have to let the magnets guide it. After a few knives, it was much easier.

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that I can get a quality knife a little sharper with one of my wetstones. This only applies to the good knives I have. What I do is sharpen the good ones on the machine, then finish with a few swipes on my stone. It is a lot faster than doing the whole thing by hand.

The lower quality knives don't seem to respond to this as well. However, they are MUCH sharper than they were before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Puts the guesswork out of manual sharpening.
I am a proud owner of this machine.(I did not get paid by the manufacturer to say this) This machine is foolproof, you just have to read the instructions that comes with the machine. You know what? I put a razor sharp edge back to my 8-inch chef knife in less than 3 minutes! I was so overwhelmed by how sharp the edge cuts newspaper, it just glides through with almost no resistence at all! I actually had tears in my eyes for the knife "just came back to life" again. OK, for those of you who don't know how a real sharp edge cuts like, here's a rule of thumb: use the razor and paper test, that is, open a new piece of razor and cut through a piece of paper from up to down. Cut for a few times and remember how it feels like, then cut with your kitchen knife, if it drags or even nicks during the cutting stroke, the knife needs sharpening. This machine puts life back to your dull, hide at the dark corners of your knife drawer knives. If it doesn't, it's either you got some [bad] knives or you are just plain STUPID! ... Thank you VERY much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful Tool, But Could Be Better
I currently own the professional Chef's Choice model (which I highly recommend, by the way), but previously used this model made for home kitchens (don't let the word "professional" in [the] description of this model's title fool you ... there is a real professional quality Chef's Choice electric sharpener).

I purchased a Chef's Choice after reading good things about this electric sharpener in "Cooks Illustrated" magazine. It definitely made a world of difference. I was starting with good knifes--Wustof Trident and Henckels--which may have something to do with my success, but the Chef's Choice really does make home sharpening possible, and easy, in my experience. When a knife seems dulls I run it through the whole sharpening process (once every 4-6 months with a high quality knife that gets a fair amount of use), but to keep my knives constantly razor sharp--which is what I really love about the Chef's Choice--I just run them through the second stage a few times as soon as they're washed. That way they're always ready to use.

My only negatives would be ... 1) That I've had no luck sharpening serrated knives (like a bread knife), which the Chef's Choice claims is can do. Because serrated knives hold their edge a LOT longer than other knives, this isn't a major concern for me. To sharpen your serrated knives I suggest taking them to a professional--look under "knife sharpening" or "cutlery" in the yellow pages. It only needs to be done once a year or so and most will do it while you wait for around $3-$5 per knife. 2) My second caveat for the chef's choice is that the "third" stage on this model has little or no effect as far as I can tell. 3) Also, the motor in this model, is a little chintzy, when compared with the far more substantial professional model, which only has two stages by the way. For the money, it should really last longer than three and half years--which is how long by old one ran before conking out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Before discarding that knife ...
I purchased the Chef's Choice Model 110 and used it to sharpen a knife [not mine] that had been previously damaged by someone trying to sharpen the knife on a grinding wheel. While the 110 could not correct the cosmetic damage done to the knife, it did restore a very sharp edge to the knife. I look forward to sharpening MY knives and maintaining a razor sharp edge.

Before discarding that knife, try the model 110 and save cash! ... Read more

  • ¿ Füritechnics developed and patented the Diamond Fingers sharpening system to eliminate the main cause of frustration with maintaining professional knives: keeping a well-honed edge on the knife.
  • ¿ We eliminated the skill required in using a regular Steel, specifically by removing the need to set the angle between the Steel and the knife blade.
  • ¿ The finish on the cutting edge is also exactly the same as that produced by a diamond-coated Steel: a fine micro-serration that is more efficient and longer-lasting, and particularly well suited to professional Cook's knives and East/West knives.

When your favorite knives start squishing ripe tomatoes instead of slicingthem, it's time to sharpen your blades. This knife sharpener is remarkably easy to use onboth straight-edge and serrated knives. Simply plug it in, turn it on, and feed knife bladesthrough the stages. The first sharpening stage uses 100 percent diamond abrasive disks to hone the knife's edge while the second stage incorporates polymer disks to polish and strop the edge to hairsplitting sharpness.Straight-edge knives should go through both stages, while serrated blades should only beused in the polishing stage.

The internal elastomeric spring guides hold knife blades at just the right angle to thesharpening surfaces, making sharpening easy. The instructions are easy to follow, andmaintenance is limited to removing the metal dust shavings from the clean-out tray oncea year or so; no lubrication is necessary for the motor, bearings, or sharpening surfaces.Guaranteed not to detemper, the sharpener has a two-year warranty for home use.--Ariel Meadow Stallings ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As easy as cutting warm butter...
Why did I ever use the elbow greese and stone methode to sharpen my knives? I recieved this sharpener as a gift. setup was easy I just pulled it out of the box made a couple of miner settings then pluged it in. In a matter of minutes I was shapening my dull kitchen knives. The sharpening action is very easy, just run the knife through the first slot a few time then through the second slot a few more and with the aid of the electric motor my knives come out sharper then when new. I've used this sharpener 40 or so times now and it still puts a fantastic edge on my knives. This sharpener would've been well worth my investment with just the time I save not having to sharpen by hand, had I bought it for myself. It does it's job well. ... Read more

For daily food preparation, this durable polypropelene cutting board has a large 11-by-14-inch cutting space and holds up to repeated use. The board is double-sided so you can slice meats and vegetables on separate surfaces to avoid contamination. Non-slip santoprene handles in a contrasting color prevent the board from slipping off the counter during slicing and also keep the board from sliding out of wet hands when transporting chopped ingredients from countertop to stove. The tough plastic cutting surface is preferable among germ-conscious chefs as it is dishwasher-safe and, therefore, easier to clean and sanitize. Knife gurus will also appreciate the polypropelene surface for maintaining knives and resulting in fewer trips to the professional sharpener. 4-0 out of 5 stars glued label
Forget the oil to remove this glue. GooGone works much better.
Why do manufacturers insist on putting on these hard-to-remove labels, or maybe the glue in China is much better!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It!
I got this board as a free gift from KitchenAid with something I purchased quite a while back. I love it. Not only do I like the non-slip properties, but so far, it hasn't yellowed like other plastic-based boards I've owned.

Those who have a problem should take advantage of KitchenAid's "no hassle" warranty while it is still in effect.

3-0 out of 5 stars How to make *ANY* cutting board NON SLIP
3 stars, 'cause I'm neutral on this cutting board.

For those of you "wowed" by the non-slip factor or for those of you that find $$ for a polypropylene hunk 'o plastic too steep here's some words of advice.

#1)Put a simple tea towel (kitchen towel) under your cutting board next time.Reduces both the noise _and_ the slippage.

#2)Head down to your neighborhood tap plastics and buy pieces of polypropylene.Guess what?Same material...works just fine and well under half the price.

My 2 cents.

Amazon.com Review

This honing steel serves a vital role by realigning, or "resetting," kitchen knives' edges, whichbend this way and that when contacting a cutting surface. (Often called a sharpening steel, or "butcher"steel, a steel doesn't actually sharpen a knife--unless it's a "diamond" steel.) Consisting of a rod of hardsteel-alloy with a tough synthetic handle and a steel finger guard, this steel works well and looks better thanmost hanging close at hand, where you can employ it frequently—ideally each time you use a knife. Thatprevents a blade from becoming dull and prolongs intervals between professional sharpenings. The rule isthat a steel should be at least as long as the knife blade being drawn across it, and this steel's 12-inch rodhones all household knives. The steel carries a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not a replacement for a sharpener...
When someone bought me a set of *good knives* for a gift this was included. They thought, and I did as well, that this was a knife sharpener. After 8 months of use resulted in some very dull, expensive knives I asked a friend about it.

These tools are excellent for what they do but they dont sharpen, per se. As the knives are used the blades lose their *straight* edge...you cant see it with the eye but it effects cutting. These will perfect the edges between uses, and probably prolong time between sharpening a bit but they wont make a dull knife sharp.

This is a very good model. I dont have any experience with any other ones. Many appear quite similar so its hard to know at times what makes one better than the other. This handle is very comfortable to use. Solid when you are holding it in one hand, and a knife in the other.

Personally, it isnt something I find totally necessary in the kitchen but i know many do. For them this would be an excellent product

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Steele - but a little long for most blocks.
As a honing steele, this atractive product perfecly performs the task of realigning the blade. I have the 22 knife big block and it sits in that perfectly. It bottoms out in smaller blocks with the tip of the steele making fairly harsh contact with whatever material is under the block. Could chip a tile counter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful but no substitute for a sharpening stone or sharpener
This is useful for setting up the edge on an already sharp knife, but don't expect to sharpen a completely dull knife with it.

It's good to get a pro to show you how to sharpen a knife and set an edge.

If you do it right, when the knife is properly sharpened and set, you can slice a piece of paper easily, as if with a razor. If the edge is set wrong, the paper won't cut or will saw unevenly.

So after you sharpen the knife, use this steel to get the edge set exactly right. It puts on the finishing touch and makes a real difference. ... Read more

With its 3-by-4-1/2-inch convex face, this 10-inch grater is ideal for Parmesan or other hard cheeses. It also grates potatoes for crusty potato pancakes, carrots for a classic Bolognese sauce, and onions for fresh salsa. Oxo's Steel line is an all-stainless-steel variant of the company's familiar fat-handled Good Grips line. Rather than being straight-sided, this tool's handle is tapered from heel to finger grip and has satin-finish, stainless-steel panels top and bottom. The handle's sides feature the same design as those in the Good Grips line--they're made of soft processed rubber for comfort, with"fins," or grooves, that flex under pressure, conforming to individual finger grips and providing control when handles are wet or slippery. Like all Oxo tools, this grater is dishwasher-safe; a hole in its handle facilitates hanging on a hook or peg. --Fred Brack ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids!
I got one of these with an Oxo bagel holder, and frankly I don't use it all that often. Mykids are another matter. They tell me this is MUCH easier to make PB&J sandwiches with. They use it for jelly on toast, making sandwiches, putting cream cheese or butter on a bagel, etc. If you're an adult accustomed to just grabbing the nearest table knife, Iwouldn't bother. But ifyou've got kids, youmight want to consider it. The smaller size and grippy handle seems to be easier for smaller hands to handle - andhey, they can make their own sandwiches to take to school! ... Read more
