Versatile and convenient, this 6-quart pot can be used on thestovetop for cooking soup or stew, go into the oven for roasting achicken or baking a casserole, and placed on its 300-watt heating basefor slow-cooking a pot roast or keeping food warm while serving. Forserving, the heating base's temperature control has a keep-warmsetting. Medium and high settings permit cooking on the base. The ovalaluminum pot, colored black like its heating base for contemporarystyle, has a nonstick interior and measures 12 inches long by 8-1/2inches wide, ample for a chicken, ham, or roast beef. A lift-out rackis included for keeping food off the bottom so it can be thoroughlybrowned during roasting. The pot's glass lid permits cooking to bemonitored without releasing heat, and the lid's knob stays cool on thestovetop. For easy cleanup, the pot, lid, and rack are dishwasher-safe.--Fred Brack ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So Easy to Use
When my West Bend cooker arrived, I was disappointed. The lid didn't seem to fit tightly and the pot was so light I thought it couldn't possibly work correctly. I was very wrong. The lid still steamed up when the items cooked and the temperature must be perfect because I haven't cooked a bad meal yet. I never thought I'd be so excited about using a slow cooker but the time it saves is amazing and the recipes can be as easy or as complicated as you want to make them. There's nothing like coming home to the aroma of dinner cooking after a long day and knowing all you have to do is serve dinner. In addition, the lightness, the non-stick surface and the fact that you can just pop the pot on the stove to brown meat or in the frig when you're done, without dirtying another container or another pot when you reheat it, is such a timesaver. Knowing I didn't want to be bothered peeling potatoes in the morning, I cut up vegetables at night and cooked stew over night, put the pot in the frig before going to work and just heated it up at night. You can't do that with the old fashion crock pots.

My only complaint is that the cord is very short, but everything else is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really nice!
This is a much better product than a Rival crock pot. For one thing, it will do so much more ("Versatility" is a good name for it). You can, for example, brown your pot roast in it on your stove before setting the pot on its heating base to slow cook. Hence, fewer pans to clean up. I consider the variety of settings a plus. More choices means more control. Also, the "keep warm" settings come in really handy. I haven't used the heating base as a griddle but it's nice to know I have that option. The only thing I don't like about it is the chord length- it's a bit on the short side. Other than that I love it! Everything comes out tasty. It's easy and convenient to use. It's easy and convenient to clean. It's even light weight!

Oh, well, in all fairness I guess I should mention some things the Rival is equiped to do that the West Bend is not: 1) the Rival pot can break if you drop it or subject it to sudden significant temperature change. 2) The Rival handles on the heating base can crack and eventually crumble into small pieces. (Mine did.) 3) Since it weighs so much, the Rival can probably get you into pretty good shape if you lift it enough times. (I use hand weights myself.) I mention these things just in case someone is looking to pay money for this sort of thing. (Well, you never know!) However, in my opinion these are not desireable features in a slow cooker so it's just as well the West Bend doesn't have them. : )

I hope this information helps you make a good decision!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the best
I must start off by saying two things. I was always against Crock Pots - they reminded me on something my grandmother would use. Also I am a certified chef who loves to cook so I know food. That said I have started a new job (not a chef) and I am getting home later in the evening and this slow cooker was suggested to me as a means of having a hot meal when I got home as opposed to waiting an hour and not eating until 7 or 8 in the evening. I was really getting tired of having to cook for an hour once I got home instead of spending that quality time with my family or just a bit of relaxation time for me. So I tried it. I am now a follower!!! I love this slow cooker. The top has only fallen in once and I have had it for a month, so that is no problem for me. It only fell in because i was putting it on incorrectly. Yes it may seem a little thin at first but it really holds up and cleans very easily. I like the thinner design because it's easy to get in and out of the cupboard as oppossed to the older ones that needed to be lugged from place to place. I love the fact that I can brown meats ahead of time and it can go in the oven. I now do not need to purchase a new dutch oven. 2 pieces of cookware at once!! It cooks very evenly and I use it at least 3 times a week. Everything has come out wonderful and my picky 8-year old has not complained once. I really do recommend this slow cooker. Especially for busy moms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not that "Versatile"
It's my first slow cooker and I love it. It's easy to clean, light-weight, and cooks evenly. I have not had any problems with the lid because thanks to reviews on this site, I have been very careful. As far as browning ingredients in the pot before slow-cooking is concerned I have found the surface area a little too small for proper browning- so, if you wanted to brown 1 cut up chicken you wold have to do it in 2 or more batches otherwise you'd end up just stewing it (which doesn't save you any time).

5-0 out of 5 stars I recommended
This slow cooker is light, versatile, and EASY to CLEAN! It ALL goes into the dishwasher (except the heating element of course). Its a good size for a family. I would buy it again. ... Read more

Hats off to the designers of appliances that perform multiple functions! After all, what kitchen couldn't benefit from more efficient use of limited space? The Krups FDH212 10-cup automatic rice cooker is also a slow cooker and a food steamer; select among those three modes and then, if necessary, set the time using the touch buttons on the control panel. The time counter shows remaining cooking time on a two-digit display. After cooking in any mode, the Krups rice cooker will shift to a keep-warm mode; the switch-over is noted by an orange indicator light on the control panel. In its most basic function, this rice cooker yields up to 20 cups of cooked rice. But it's also useful for all the typical slow-cooker dishes; soups, stews, chili, etc. An enclosed booklet includes recipes that range from the home-style Yankee Pot Roast to the fancier Casablanca lamb and apricot stew, as well as including simple cooking instructions for rice.

This is a lovely appliance, too--modern curves in gleaming stainless steel with high-gloss black lid and accents. The lacquer-black lid has a large, curved, stay-cool handle and a click-close lock with a gray release button. On the underside of the lid, a removable steam shield helps keep the scalding steam away from the lid and directs moisture back into the food. The deep nonstick cooking bowl is removable for easy cleaning; a sturdy black plastic steaming rack rests inside the bowl to suspend food above the water. One small but very considerate feature is a condensation collector; a channel running under the edge of the closed lid conducts condensation droplets to a small catch pocket on the side. A small plastic measuring cup and black plastic rice paddle (with attachable spoon rest) come with the cooker.

To preserve the nonstick coating of the cooking bowl, use wooden, plastic, or rubber utensils. Vinegar--used in the cooking of short-grain sushi rice--may corrode the nonstick surface over time. To clean the body of the rice cooker, wipe with a damp cloth and then wipe dry; the appliance is not immersible. The removable steam shield, steam basket, and nonstick cooking bowl can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. To re-season the bowl after every few rounds in the dishwasher, wipe the inner surface of the bowl with a little cooking oil. Do not use abrasive scrubbers or cleansers on any part of the rice cooker. The Krups FDH2121 rice cooker measures 11 inches in diameter and 11-1/2 inches high. It comes with a detailed instruction and recipe booklet. Krups guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty. --Garland Withers ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dandy little appliance!
I like multi function appliances but sometimes it's case of a jack of all trades master of none. But this machine is nifty - does the basic rice cooking, steams and is also a slow cooker. Very useful for the price (you can get it cheaper at Kitchen Universe by the way I wonder if they will print this now that I've written it)
The steamer basket is too shallow so you have to keep the things you are steaming to a minimum height otherwise it sticks to the lid. That's my only complaint so far

Buttons can feel a little cheap but they work great ... Read more

This handsome brushed-chrome slow cooker is similar to Rival's 6445-BC 6-1/2-quart model. Added to this model for extra convenience is a warm setting for keeping a meal at just the right serving temperature. Oval in shape and holding a generous 6-1/2 quarts, the cooker suits a large family or a couple who likes to entertain. The heavy stoneware crock lifts out of the heating base for easy cleaning thanks to a stick-resistant coating, and is attractive enough to serve from right at the table. While the crock is safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher, it is not intended for use on a stovetop or under a broiler.

With two cook settings, low and high, the pot can slow cook a wide variety of stews, roasts, and soups, recipes for which are included in the owner's guide. The glass lid, also dishwasher-safe, sends moisture back into the pot while at the same time allows contents to be viewed. The loop-style lid knob and improved sure-grip handles are heat resistant. Measuring 17 by 8 by 12 inches with a 40-inch power cord, the slow cooker is covered by a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

If you've ever had a slow-cooked chicken, you'll no doubt remember the savory juices dribbling down your chin. Similar to a crockpot, a slow cooker uses a low-watt heating system to gradually bring your meal to excellence, and you don't have to hover over it as the food cooks. This stainless-steel version from Faberware features a tempered-glass lid and an oval-shaped pot that can accommodate larger cuts of meat--even a whole chicken--easily. Measuring 11 by 15 by 13-1/2 inches, this cooker doesn't take up much counter space and frees up burners, a must when preparing holiday dinners and buffets. Although not a requirement, you can add to the overall succulence of your slow-cooked dishes by stirring them a few times as they cook. Nothing is better than juices drizzled over the top of a chicken while it lazes in the pot. --Thom Arno ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleek, Safe, Sizeable... and the Food Tastes Great, Too!
I bought this unit as a replacement for a Rival programmable cooker that came with a non-fit cover and punched out 'feet'. The Farberware slow cooker has been a delight to use. I have made beef stew, baked beans, soup and even a sinfully moist chocolate cake. Each recipe turned out beautifully. The cover is a tight fit and the metal ring around the rim assures a vapor seal, preventing moisture loss. Of particular note are the settings: Low, High and Auto. The Auto function heats the unit to the High setting and then automatically shifts to the Low setting. This assures a quick heating of the unit and discourages the possibility of food contamination from bacteria. Aesthetically, the cooker will look great on your counter with its polished steel body and sleek black insert. One word of caution, however: the outside does get hot so you will want to keep it out of the reach of the kids. The handles stay cool, but if you have to move it, you may want to use hot pads just to be safe .

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm very happy
I ordered this because I need a larger slow cooker for the Holidays. I thought I wanted the smart pot but I wasn't happy with the reviews. I was worried that the Farberware would be to basic but decided on it anyway. I am thilled with it. The crock is heavy and durable. My lid fits great. It looks very modern. My first meal (beef stew) came out great. I'm going to invest in a slow cooker cook book because I want to cook in it all the time. It only came with a few recipes and I only have a few of my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!!!!!
I received slow cooker for Christmas. It cooks very quickly. It blew my old crock pot away. The food was done in half the time of the crock pot. It's very attractive too. I love it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate Cooking Ability
I bought this slow cooker about two years ago. After reading the reviews, I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks this machine gets too hot! I guess other slow cooker don't get that hot? I'm not sure since this is the only one I've owned.

Also, I found that even though I follow the recommended cooking time with all the recipes I've tried, most of the meats finish quick. I've talked to my mom about it, and I honestly think that the low 200-degree setting is higher than 200 degrees. I've never cooked anything on high, but I really think the low setting is messed up.

Over all, I've never had disastrous results with this machine. However, since there are other cookers on the market, I won't buy this Farberware one again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Family Sized Slow Cooking
I just got this slow cooker a day ago. I would agree that the unit makes a horrid smell when you first use it. It gives off a burnt electrical smell. I had followed the instructions and heated the unit with 4 cups of water before I used it. The smell went away by the second time that I used it. My food was cooked perfectly.

I was disappointed in the amount of recipes that came with the unit.... a measley 10. I bought a slow cooker recipe book to compensate for this.

I would also agree that the unit gets very hot to the touch. However, this is also stated in the instruction manual.
The instruction manual is very detailed on care of the crock itself. The crock was not built for sudden temperature changes. It warns not to place in frozen food. It also warns not to store the crock in the refrigerator then immediately use it. I would suggest reading the directions carefully before you use this item. It might save you some headaches in the long run.

The good thing about this slow cooker is that it does not take up a lot of counter space. The tall oval design allows you to cook family sized meals in a small space. I have a large family and these can handle approximately two roasters or a really nice sized pot roast.

The auto feature allows the food to cook quickly then switch to low. This helps prevent food-borne bacteria. This is a big plus.

All in all, this is a good crock pot. It does need some minor upgrades to make it a 5. A better recipe book and a cool touch feature would make it even that much better. ... Read more

Unlike the heavier stoneware crocks found in many slow cookers, this one is made of lightweight Extreme Temperature Cookware (ETC), also called VersaWare, a stoneware so versatile it can be used on a stovetop, in an oven, under a broiler, and in a microwave. The lid is also made of ETC, which makes the five-quart pot ideal for storing pre-assembled foods in the freezer or refrigerator, and baking covered dishes in the oven. Of course, the round crock also sits in the slow-cooker base, an unusual cradle design featuring four metal legs with rubber feet. A single knob sets the cooker at low, high, and keep warm, a convenient setting for maintaining food at just the right serving temperature.

On the two cook settings, low and high, the pot can slow-cook a wide variety of stews, roasts, and soups, recipes for which are printed in an included 79-page recipe booklet. Meat can be braised first on the stovetop, and casseroles can be browned under the broiler just before serving. Both the base and crock feature loop-style handles for easy lifting. Measuring 9 by 13 by 10-1/2 inches, with internal dimensions of 9-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches, the slow cooker comes with a short, 32-inch cord that removes from the base for storage and lets the entire unit stand alone on a serving buffet. This round five-quart CrockPot slow cooks a wide variety of stews, soups, and roasts on its two cook settings, low and high, and also keeps food at perfect serving temperature on the warm setting. The heavy stoneware crock, which lifts out of the heating base, cleans easily thanks to a stick-resistant coating and is attractive enough to serve from right at the table. While the crock is safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher, it is not intended for use on a stovetop or under a broiler.

Included with the CrockPot is a bonus Little Dipper, a miniature 1-1/2-cup electric pot that heats and holds dips and fondues at serving temperature. An attached 25-inch cord allows just enough reach for setting the pot on a counter or buffet. The dipper features a plastic lid but not a removable crock, so the pot needs to be washed out by hand without submerging in water. The larger CrockPot, which measures 7 by 14 by 12 inches with a 40-inch power cord, is topped by a dishwasher-safe glass lid, which sends moisture back into the pot while at the same time allows contents to be viewed. What sets this extra-large slow cooker apart is its digital recipe box of more than 200 recipes and its ability to be programmed for cooking time and temperature. When it reaches the end of the cooking time for the recipe you've selected, it turns itself down to keep warm until it's time to serve.

Its curvaceous, white design is handsome and the rubberized keypads (easy to wipe!) are easy to use. The screen where the recipes appear is at a slight upward angle, so there's no having to crouch down to read it. An audible tone lets you know when cooking time is over. And there are enough recipes in this Smart-Pot--from casseroles to soups and even some great desserts--that dinner will be anything but a routine.

Clean-up is very easy; warm soapy water will do the trick. (The programmable base unit is not immersible; just use a soapy rag or cloth.) Do not use scratchy, abrasive cleaners on the chrome exterior. Glass lid is dishwasher-safe. The slow cooker measures 16-1/2 by 15 by 8 inches. it is big. .. easy to use. . . i like the multiple settings and timers. . .. I think it is fabulous!

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I have to disagree with a lot of the negative reviews - I really like this crockpot a lot....the shift-to-warm feature is wonderful, as are all the programmatic functions. The lid fits just fine, and the pot is nice looking as well (yes, it's kind of big, but it's supposed to be! It's all pot, not additional packaging). I do agree that the recipes should be in a book, but, with that said, the recipes I've made so far were lousy anyway - very bland. So, the recipe function is an add-on that may be nice on principle, but not a reason by itself to buy the pot. Buy it for its digital capabilities, design and volume.

3-0 out of 5 stars Christmas gift gone bad
I was very excited to see a high tech crock pot under my tree, only to find out that it is difficult to manuever. The menu screen is hard to read and I don't believe there is over 200 recipes, its like uh...what are my options? Not only is there little choice really, the buttons don't exactly function well. You have to push them very hard and you have to be a magician to find that working spot. If you have lots of time, this unit is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than the other one
After two failed attempts with the other Rival slow cooker, I got this one for Christmas. What a difference! While the other crock pot was a slow cooker in name only, this did the job extremely well. I've used it twice on the low setting, and both times the food was cooked perfectly. The recipes were easy to follow, although it would be nice if they were also in a seperate booklet so they'd be easier to preview. Clean up was a breeze. I'd highly recommend this!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not-so-smart crock pot
My wife and I both work (long hours) outside of our home so we've used crock pots for many years to help prepare easy, wholesome meals for weeknights. We have been looking for a unit that will automatically shift the "keep warm" after a specified cooking time so my wife gave me one of these new "super-pots" for Christmas. I've tried to cook 2 meals (seafood chowder & ham with navy beans) on the low setting in this pot and it has burned them both. As mentioned above, you'd think an $80 crock would come with a printed recipe book but it didn't so if you're preparing your grocery shopping list you have to drag this monster out, plug it in and mess with a very unfriendly program to try to find the list of ingredients for a given recipe. What a pain! Lastly, the LCD display screen is VERY hard to see in a lighted room. You have to shade it with one hand while pushing buttons with the other to try to find and read the text. It REALLY needs its own backlight. I understand marketing and the fact that it must be very hard to continue findings ways to "improve" something as basically great as the original crock pot but the folks at Rival REALLY missed the boat on this thing. Save some money and buy a more conventional model with fewer bells and whistles and maybe a little better temperature control! ... Read more

Ideal for a large family or a dinner party, this round CrockPot from Rival is cleanly designed and simple to operate. One dial turns to three heat settings, low, high, and keep warm for serving, and a red light indicates the power is on.

Easy to carry by means of heat-resistant, flange-style handles, the pot measures 10 inches high by 12 inches in diameter (14 inches with handles). 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for chili, soups, etc...
This is a great value and enduring product. I've had my Rival crock pot for over 10 years, and have used it literally HUNDREDS of times. This is another one of those very low cost but high value kitchen tools.

The low setting allows for slow (12 hour+) cooking overnight or all day. I love to put on a pot of chili before I go to bed or work, and let the house soak up the aroma!

Just be careful with the countertop placement, as the sides get very hot!

5-0 out of 5 stars We're a Rival Family
When I was looking for a crockpot, I wanted something affordable and durable. My Mom had a Rival crock pot when I was younger (it was orange and older than the hills). My Dad also has an older version of this one, only it has a plastic lid. After 10 years, the lid broken, but it still works.

I got this one and love it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that are available with some of the more costly models, nor does it have a design. It is just a nice crock pot that is big enough for a small roast or a pot of chili (which is great on a winter's day) ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Unlike the heavier stoneware crocks found in many slow cookers, this one is made of lightweight Extreme Temperature Cookware (ETC), also called VersaWare, a stoneware so versatile it can be used on a stovetop, in an oven, under a broiler, and in a microwave. The lid is also made of ETC, which makes the six-quart pot ideal for storing pre-assembled foods in the freezer or refrigerator, and baking covered dishes in the oven. Of course, the oval-shape crock also sits in the slow-cooker base, an unusual cradle design featuring four metal legs with rubber feet.

Measuring 10 by 15 by 11 inches, with internal dimensions of 9-1/2 by 11-1/2 by 5-1/2, the slow cooker comes with a short, 32-inch cord that removes from the base for storage and lets the entire unit stand alone on a serving buffet. The crock and lid go right into the dishwasher for clean-up. Rival covers the slow cooker with a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

The original slow cooker, the Crock-Pot was first introduced by Rival in the 1970s and has proved to be much more than a fad. This convenient appliance helps you prepare delicious family-style meals while you’re working, running errands, hiking, or just relaxing around the house.

The 5-quart, round Crock-Pot is large enough to cook four to six chicken breasts with vegetables or enough chili or soup for four to five people. The easy-to-use programmable timer turns on and off with the push of a button and lets you choose among time settings of 4, 6, 8, and 10 hours. When cooking time is complete, the Crock-Pot automatically shifts into warming mode, which keeps food at the right eating temperature but doesn’t overcook it.

The exterior of this Crock-Pot is white plastic that wipes down easily and matches the décor of most kitchens. Plastic handles provide a secure and comfortable grip for transporting the cooker. The Crock-Pot’s internal liner is made of durable stoneware that is attractive enough to go from cooker to tabletop to serve your meal. The liner also has a stick-resistant coating and is dishwasher-safe to make clean-up easy. The glass lid lets you peek at your food while it cooks and is also dishwasher safe. 5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS THING!
OK... well, first of all I have NEVER owned a crock pot before. So you are getting a new owners point of view. I LOVE THIS THING! I am currently using it at this very moment with my entire house filling up with the aroma of the pot roast! First of all.... to the people who said it's HOT .... well duhhh... no kidding! (ever hear of potholders?) Second to the ones who have returned it for not having a medium setting... well, warm is medium and YES you can override the low/high settings if you just read your instruction manual! Also, Why in the world would the lady who ended up with sludge leave a NEW machine plugged in all day when you aren't home. I am using it for the first time and have stayed home to see how it works before I'd ever leave it on while I'm not home! You are just asking for trouble if you leave any new appliance on the first time you use it and not supervise it. As for the ill fitting lid. Mine fits fine. Yep it does rattle ever once in awhile but I remember my mother's doing this when I was a kid too! (as a matter of fact she owns this exact same model now! and also loves hers!) To give the other people a benefit of the doubt... maybe this is a newer model that I got and the defective ones are now better??? I don't know but I do know I love my new crock pot and can't wait to feed my family dinner tonight!!!!! 5 Stars from me!!!*****

2-0 out of 5 stars Inflexible heat settings ruin decent product
I purchased this pot about three months ago without realizing its major limitation - this "smart" pot is limited to four preprogrammed heat cycles, and it can't be used to simply keep something warm. I also agree with the other reviewers that this pot also gets a little too hot on the low setting, I found this with another relatively new crock pot from GE as well. I don't consider it dangerous, but it is annoying.

The reviewer who gave this product five stars with a "round is better"...um, well, HELLO...even if that is so, this pot is oval...either that reviewer flunked geometry, or is reviewing a different product!

While this pot hasn't cracked or broken, I am disappointed with the lack of settings and manual override. If I could simply turn the pot to warm when I want to, it would get three or four stars. It is attractive, easy to clean and plenty big enough for my family. The lid fit is OK, but not great, again similar to the GE crock pot (which suffered a broken lid handle within the first few months of light use). My old Rival crock pot lasted nearly 15 years and had none of these limitations. Does anyone make a decent crock pot anymore?

3-0 out of 5 stars Cooks very fast on what should be low setting
I replaced an old 2-setting Rival pot with the round Rival Smart pot Model 38501-W. Using a recipe for the old pot (Potato-Leek soup) I used the 10 hour setting figuring if I started at Noon it would finish cooking around 9 pm. Wrong! It was done in about THREE hours! The soup was delicious and more flavorful than I recall having made in my old pot, but I DO NOT recommend leaving the house for 8 or more hours with this pot cooking. Plus, condensation from the metal-rimmed lid accumulated, sputtered, and spilled over. I had to keep wiping it away. I won't return the pot because I had shopped around a lot before I bought this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too hot to handle!
I arrived home after my crock pot was on for 8 hours and witnessed the wrath of this crockpot! My hot sausage and spaghetti sauce was reduced to five pieces of sausage and black sludge! I was devastated and was sure this is a defect, but after reading these reviews, it's par for the course.

1-0 out of 5 stars What is wrong with this thing?
This is a horrible crock-pot. The first one I owned went back to the store for an exchange. I thought there was something wrong with it. Everything I cooked turned into a horrible, burned mess!! I exchanged it for the same one. Same problem. It cooks WAY TOO HOT!! This one is going back too. I think I'll have to find another brand.

It is so frustrating to come home thinking you're going to have a nice hot meal and instead find a shrunken up, burned meal. Or, my chili at a rolling boil on the "warm" cycle. My other crock-pot is a Rival and it's fine. This is frustrating! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars As a fryer....
I, too, bought this cooker at Target believing it was a fryer and was disappointed that the instructions noted it was NOT a fryer. Unable to find anything I liked better (the plastic machines seem flimsy and clunky), I took the advice of the last reviewer and tried it as a deep-fryer for tofu and eggrolls. It works! The thermostat seems reliable, and it heats up quickly enough. Plus, it's dishwasher-safe and nonstick. The only disappointments include the fry-basket, which isn't optimum for draining oil and is awkward to handle with a removable pinch-handle-- but I improvised with tongs. And it would be nice to have an airtight lid to store the oil-- but the glass one does just fine if you change the oil occasionally. As someone who usually avoids frying foods for health reasons, this little pot allows me to cook the few fried goods I'd normally go out for as well, or even better, than how I'd get them at a restaurant-- and it makes my "it-ain't-good-unless-it's-fried" husband feel like he's got a place in the kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this appliance
I have been using a Fry Daddy for a few years and wanted something that would go into the dishwasher. This is a great multi-cooker. I have the older version of the same appliance so I am using this one strictly as a deep fat fryer. The instructions said NOT to deep fry in it but it works just fine. I live alone and don't need something big and this is just the right size for me. It would be nice to have a plastic cover for it but I like the clear glass lid. The basket is okay also. I can use it in the older model as well. Cooking dried beans in it takes less time and electricity. Thanks, Presto!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Help for a Non-cook!
~I just got married and I have always been a horrible cook! We got this multi cooker as a wedding gift from Amazon.com and we LOVE it! I makes things so simple! Roasts are so easy to cook and they turn out perfect...so moist and flavorful! And you can do everything from browning to roasting in one pot so there are less dishes to do. Plus, the multi-cooker is much easier to clean than a crock pot. We've also made stews and enjoy the possibility of easy frying and steaming. Highly~~ recommended, especially for those who just have a tough time cooking (like me!)~

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!
I dont want to say too much, but it is really great!

5-0 out of 5 stars great!
I bought this pot because it is large enough to boil pasta for a family of 4 (6 qts). Then 2 of the 4 burners on our stove died and the Presto pot really came in handy. I can use it to cook anything that would be on the stovetop. A great buy for a reasonable price. ... Read more

When set on low for all-day simmering, this cooker from the makers of the original Crock Pot slowly tenderizes meat, turning even budget cuts into juicy meals. A modest 3-1/2-quart size, the oval-shaped crock holds enough chicken, beef, stew or soup for two to three people. The temperature knob has three settings: off, low, and high. The crock, which lifts from the base for cleaning, features a rinse-clean, lifetime stick-resistant coating. As long as extreme changes in temperature are avoided, such as placing in cold water when hot, the crock should give years of service. Both the crock and lid are dishwasher-safe. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Slow Cooker
Just what I was looking for. Perfect size for side dish for pot luck, or dinner for a family. I love the clean look.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rival Crockpot 3 1/2 qt.
One of the reviews described this crockpot as cool to the touch. Even on low there is a spot that is hot. On high the entire outside is too hot to keep a hand on it. A bad feature that makes me uncomfortable leaving it untended all day.

Aside from that (which is a major consideration) I love the way it cooks, the design is attractive, and the size is very convenient.

Also, I have not been able to find out what is meant by the "auto-protect safety system"

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for singles, too!
I'm single and live by myself, and I have found that this Crock Pot is an excellent way to have a really nice meal waiting for me when I get home from work. I can make enough to last a few meals, but the Crock Pot works great even with a smaller amount of food -- you just want to make sure you've got plenty of liquid in there. I use my Crock Pot all the time, and it has worked perfectly from the moment I took it out of the box. It is also quite easy to clean; even if you forget to clean it right away, a bit of a soak with hot soapy water does the trick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy only Rival!
I have an older version of thed 3.5 quart crock pot, with nonremovable stoneware and no cool touch. It's great! Removable crockery is good for easier cleanup, though. I have tried other brands, but only Rival Crock-Pots work just right. After all, they are the original! This size is great for one- or two-person households, or for desserts and side dishes for larger households. Accessories are available: meat rack, small bake pan, dust cover, insulated carrying tote. I love coming home to a cooked meal at the end of the day, when I'm too tired to cook. It's great for making cooked fruit jams, fruit desserts, bread pudding, rice pudding. Of course, beans, soups, and stews are also excellent. Meats are better browned or seared before putting in the crockpot, to avoid that hospital food texture. The recipes are also much better than the 70's onion soup/liquid smoke/canned condensed soup variety. Let this "little old lady" cook for you all day!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Crockpot for small family or single
This is an excellent product. Crockpot is small enough for 1 but big enough to cook for a group. The outside of the crockpot stays cool to the touch while it makes your dinner.

Everyone should have one of these! ... Read more

West Bend's Oval 4-Quart Crockery Cooker has a country-kitchen look, with clean white curves accented in gold, maroon, and navy blue, with a freehand-style floral motif. Its casual design is well suited to everyday kitchen use, but it's also decorative enough to take its place in a buffet line-up. (During fall and winter, it's great for keeping hot cider or mulled wine warm.) The stoneware insert--also a deep blue--can be used as a serving or baking dish.

There are three temperature settings--Hi, Lo, and Keep Warm, and an indicator light underneath the control dial verifies that the heating element is engaged. The domed glass lid helps keep an eye on whatever's cooking. The body of the slow cooker is metal, so exercise caution, as it does heat up along with the contents as they cook. The lid and handles, however, are made of a stay-cool plastic and can be safely touched during the cooking process.

Clean-up is very easy; warm soapy water will do the trick. (The base unit is not immersible; just use a soapy rag or cloth.) Do not use scratchy, abrasive cleaners on any part of the slow cooker. The glass lid and stoneware insert are both dishwasher-safe. The slow cooker measures 15-1/2 by 11 by 9 inches (including lid and handles). 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect fit, perfect size, perfect cook
I have used this crock pot for three meals so far without problems. It show great promise of the being the (almost) perfect slow cooker.

I purchased this model because it is as close to the perfect crock pot as you can get. Our other crock pot is a 6 quart round model and too large for normal cooking and "burns" or over-cooks normal meals. This four quart crock pot is the perfect size for our family of four. We can fill it half-way with fixings for a half-gallon of stew (gives leftovers) or make a full pot of spaghetti sauce that will provide for a couple of meals. The three settings (High / Low / Keep Warm) work as you would think. I did note that the 'Keep Warm' setting may be a bit too hot for delicate sauces but was just right for the stew and spaghetti. Four quarts (1 gallon) is a lot of food!

Any crock you get should have a dishwasher safe removable crock and lid like this one. An oval crock pot allows you to fit larger cuts of meat in the crock than a round pot. I can not fit my 6-quart crock in the dishwasher but can and do put this one in the dishwasher.

This crock pot does not 'loose steam' as some of the others are described but the lid is not sealed like a pressure cooker. As the food is cooked, steam is emitted. It gathers and cools at the (inside) top of the glass lid and drips down to the side of the lid, collecting on the lip of the crock where the lid sits. The lid sits on the lip of the crock easily with a few small dimples to prevent it from sealing (this is good - keep reading). As the steam condenses on the side of the crock the water collecting on the side seals the cooker. It works. Steam is kept in the crock pot but the pot will not become a pressure cooker. The glass lid will not 'bubble' or rock on the stone crock as it cooks so it is safer than some older models. It works and works well.

The oval shape of the crock allows for a larger cuts of meat than a round crock pot the same size. The stone crock and glass lid is dishwasher safe and actually fits in the dishwasher. Clean-up is easy. The pot does not take up too much space in the cupboard.

This crock pot has a great price for what you get. A higher price may not get you a better crock pot. Until I see a crock pot with intelligent sensors (senses the temperature of what you are cooking) and digital controls for temperature and time with pre-sets for different types of sauces and meals, this is the one. ... Made of heavy cast aluminum with a nonstick surface inside and out, this multipurpose cooker with lift-and-drain basket simmers soups and stews, browns and roasts meats, boils corn on the cob and other vegetables, steams fish and rice, and deep fries shrimp and other foods. And in addition to its everyday versatility, the cooker can be washed in the dishwasher after simply removing the heat control. The glass lid is also dishwasher-safe. For safety, the cooker comes with a short 30-inch cord with a magnetic coupler that attaches to the heat control; if jostled, the cord detaches at the magnetized point to help prevent the kettle from being overturned. An easy-turn knob on the heat control adjusts the cooking temperature from warm to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Two large handles make the cooker easy to lift, and four sturdy legs keep the heat off the countertop. The cooker measures 9 inches in diameter and stands 7-1/2 inches tall. 5-0 out of 5 stars Multi-purpose gadget you'll actually use
I was about to buy a "FryDaddy" small deep fryer at a retail store when the clerk at the checkout asked whether I'd looked at this item right next to it (she'd just bought one herself). I went back and swapped my FryDaddy for the Kitchen Kettle, with no regrets. This gives you deep-frying capability but also functions as a sort of non-crockery slow cooker. My first weekend, I deep-fried chicken wings on Friday night and then made a chicken-and-rice dish on Saturday, with fine results both times.

The heat does come from the bottom, I should note, not from the sides as in a true slow-cooker. Some may not like that. The instructions include recommendations for cleaning the non-stick bottom if it becomes discolored. The kettle is non-stick inside and out.

Best of all, unlike my older-model slow cooker, this one can be immersed (after you unplug the electrical unit).

Because of the danger posed by hot oil when you deep-fry, the unit has a magnetic breakaway cord. Tripping over or tugging the cord will simply separate it from the unit rather than tip the unit over. (Even so, be careful with kids around.)

All in all, seems to be a good buy -- a multi-tasker rather than a specialized item that will wind up in the yard sale. ... Read more
