One thing that you should understand about any aluminum or cast iron cookware is staining of the outside surface. Any oils or food that spill onto the outside during cooking will actually be absorbed into the metal surface creating a dark stain that cannot be removed. I consider this part of the seasoning of the cookware and not unattractive but people who like their cookware to always look new should consider stainless steel or something.

Amazon.com Review This 7-inch santoku is a Japanese cook's (or chef's) knife, featuring alow-tip style with a broad blade. The cutting edge is minimally curved,so it provides less rocking action than a European-style cook's knife. For straight-down slicing and precise chopping, however, it's superb.Alternating hollows on each side of the blade create air pockets, allowing slices to fall away cleanly. This knife should be hand washed.--Fred Brack Features Reviews (29)
This Japanese inspired Santuko knife by Wusthof has certainly added to my joy in the kitchen. It's the perfect implement for slicing, dicing or chopping. Alternating indentations prevent food from sticking to the blade, while its heft and balance are perfection. A razor sharp blade allows me to slice as thinly as I wish, whether it be for carpaccio or the prosciuto we so enjoy. It's ideal for the cheese and ham in panini, and makes quick work of onions and celery for a family recipe for vegetable soup. I do recommend that you hand wash it, just as you would a fine piece of silver. Believe me, this knife is sterling in every way. - Gail Cooke

I received my machine on 9 April 2004 and brewed a cup within a few minutes (after flushing the machine as recommended). Even the medium roast tasted richer than most coffee I've made with traditional coffee makers. My wife likes a milder tasting coffee, so the mild roast is perfect for her. The dark roast is the closest to espresso you'll get without spending hundreds on an espresso machine. The coffee is nice and hot and the "crema" layer on top completes the experience! For those who gave this machine poor reviews, make sure you wash the pod holders and water tank and flush the machine before the first use. If you don't use it for more than a day, flush it before use with fresh, cold water. Be sure to use the correct pod holder and press the correct (4 oz or 8 oz) button. Place the pod with the flat side up(has the Senseo logo printed on this side). Use fresh, cold water (probably the most important ingredient in coffee) and don't reuse the pods! I tried this and the second cup tasted like "coffee from a can" coffee. Finally, and most important: give the coffee a stir before drinking. The bottom layer contains most of the good stuff. I hope that other coffee roasters are reading these reviews and will offer pods. My only concern at this point is that there aren't any alternative pods from other roasters yet available. The Douwe Egberts brand coffee is excellent, but the availability of a variety of blends and beans will be demanded soon, because sales of this machine are sure to take off! Enjoy!

Back when I was growing up we made delicious rice, rice porridge, steamed sausage over rice, steamed chicken and vegetables in broth, bean soup, etc. using the simple one button rice cooker. The trick for some of the dishes is to run the cook cyle twice to cook longer. I mention all this to explain why just having a rice cooker cooking different things doesn't totally impress me. I'm used to having one that is simple to use and versatile. With this background, I was a little bit disappointed in the ZAC10 rice cooker although I still think it is an excellent product. This neuro fuzzy is CUTE. And it makes DELICIOUS oatmeal. It also makes cheaper rice taste better. The keep warm feature works perfectly -- no making a crust. I use the timer feature for oatmeal in the morning - very nice to have. But it is also awfully SLOW. I'm used to the rice cooker cooking faster than the stovetop method but this one is just as slow if not slower. For 1 small cup of rice it takes 40+ minutes. The machine I grew up with took 20 minutes. Even the quick cook feature on this machine takes 30 minutes. Theoretically you can't use this as a steamer according to the Ultimate Rice Cooker cookbook I also bought. That's too bad since I am used to steaming things in a rice cooker. I will play around with it though and see if that's really the case. I am still torn about whether to get this for my motherinlaw this Xmas. She loves oatmeal but cooked in milk so the timer feature won't help her. But still, it makes delicious oatmeal without her having to stand and stir. And it keeps it warm for a long time. What's making me hesitate is that she doesn't eat rice that often and the buttons in the front are rather daunting. (It really isn't as complicated as it looks though) Also the manual has no good recipes. It doesn't even tell you if you can make oatmeal with milk or not in it. (You can.) On the web they have some and if I were to get this for her I would definitely print out some recipes to go with it. This would be an expensive gift not to be used. If you eat rice alot or like rice, oatmeal, porridge, that kind of thing... a rice cooker is a must and this one is a great one. Just realize that if you're use to a one button rice cooker you'll be giving up simplicity.

FOLLOW-UP: To be fair to the recipe, I should say I used quick cook oats (1 minute type) instead of the steel cut slow cook type oatmeal. Maybe that made a difference. BUt if so, too bad because I still have a lot of the other kind of oatmeal to use up.
I suspect something is wrong with the Fuzzi Logic programming, which should be able to sense the altitude by measuring the boiling point of water and extend cooking times accordingly. Fuzzi Logic is an incremental type of mathematical set theory in which the next step depends upon the success of the previous step. Not being able to cope with higher altitudes suggest a fault with the coding. And it spoils the general usefulness of the cooker. Personally, I would welcome information from Zojirushi regarding how to adapt the NS-ZAC10 to high altitude cooking --- if indeed that is possible. I have no idea how to contact them. They don't appear to maintain a website. Unless you live at sea level, don't waste your money. Buy a simple, inexpensive On/Off rice cooker where you can compensate for altitude by adding more liquid and extending the cooking time. On the other hand, if you live near sea level, this cooker works well.

Amazon.com Review The Perfect Steam comes with a platinum soleplate for effortless glide and incredible durability. It has a sleek teardrop shape, a full-length button channel, and an anti-drip design. Rowenta also equips the iron with three-way automatic shut-off: after 8 minutes if left vertically, 30 seconds if left horizontally, and 30 seconds if tipped over. Large and comfortable in the hand, the iron holds up to 13 ounces of water at a time in a translucent tank. The tanks opening is among the cleverest on the market--a tidy lid pushes in for filling and releases for closure. The iron also comes with an anti-calc system to trap scale and deposits that could interfere with its performance. Measuring 12 by 5 by 6-3/4 inches, the Perfect Steam is made in Germany, and has a full one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard From the Manufacturer The DX-9800 has been engineered around major technical innovations of the three core functions of an iron: heat, steam, and the soleplate. The Intra Steam system "pulses" the steam, creating the perfect cycle of steam and pressing. The Thermo Control system uses an electronic sensor that measures and maintains an even temperature in the soleplate. The Platinium soleplate combines outstanding glide and non-stick, non-scratch properties. Its stainless steel core coated with ultra-thin silicate coating for a tougher, smoother surface with excellent non-stick and non-scratch properties. The Next Level in Irons This iron, like all Rowenta irons, is ergonomically designed for comfort, with thumb grips and index finger grooves, and easily used by both left and right handed user,. Its new comfort handles is soft and resilient, with silicon rubber pads that provide support and relieve pressure at key contact points between hand and handle. The non-slip texture and pattern provides a firm grip for precision control. Features Features Reviews (11)
wow! It does a great job! Ironing is much easier and actually a little fun, as crazy as that sounds. This generates a ton of steam, it heats up very quickly and has a light to tell you when the it's ready for use. It is virtually spillproof as the there is a spring loaded top on the hole where you pour the water into the iron. It's heavy enough to provide some solid weight for the clothes, but not too heavy to make it difficult to move. If you're in the market for an iron, try this one out and you won't be sorry!

Amazon.com Review The set consists of a 2-quart saucepan with lid; a deep, 3-quart casserole pan with lid; a 3-quart sauté pan with lid that's also perfect for braising; a 6-quart stockpot with lid; and 8-inch and 10-inch fry pans. The pot and pans display Emeril's signature on their cast-stainless-steel handles, which are riveted for strength, have thumb rests, stay cool on the stovetop, and won't be harmed by an oven's highest heat. The pot and pans' lips flare to facilitate dripless pouring. Made of tempered glass, lids allow cooking to be monitored without releasing heat. Stainless-steel bands around their edges prevent chipping and ensure a tight fit. Although Emerilware Stainless cookware is dishwasher-safe, hand washing is recommended. It carries a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack What's in the Box Features Reviews (21)
First of all, you must preheat the pans and use some type of oil, fat, etc. Second, do not overheat these pans. A little over "medium" is about all you need unless you're just boiling water. Anything hotter than that will often cause the metal to look blueish until it is properly cleaned. This is true of all stainless cookware I've used. Also, the copper on the pot will tarnish because, IT IS COPPER. That's going to happen. So if you want the cookware to look nice and pretty then don't use them. If you actually plan to cook, this is some decent cookware at a decent price. (BTW, the copper cleans easily with Bar Keeper's Friend, or a common household solution such as lemon juice and salt). That said, I prefer All-Clad. (I plan on becoming a chef, and I'm insistent on having the best)
Just thought I'd add more information to the issue...

Refrigeration is more than adequate, moving parts are sturdy and well-designed, the price is 1/3 that of similar machines. The unit is large but sleek. It looks fine on a countertop. Capacity is small, up to about 1 quart, but this isn't a real problem since it is so easy to make multiple runs. No mechanical problems so far (2 months). I love my Gelato!
The bucket and paddle detatch and are dish washer safe. Top Notch

The widest setting on the roller works to knead/roll the dough until its pliable enough to continue. Its amazing how such flaky dough can become so evenly mixed with minimal effort. From this point, its just a few more settings until you've got angel-hair thin dough. It is important to use the cutter before the ends of your dough dry out, lest they will clog the cutter. Pasta is my favorite food, and this contraption makes it possible to make my own healthy, delicious pasta recipes at home, quickly!
The cutters work very well, too. I would encourage you to run at least two batches of dough through each set of cutters and throwing away the resultant noodles before actually using the cutters in making pasta to eat. This will get out the fine metal shavings in the cutters. From then on you're good to go. Also, I invested another $15 at Amazon for a simple wooden pasta rack. Well worth the money and much more elegant than hanging your noodles over the back of a chair. Enjoy!
Don't stress about the "no washing in water" instruction -- pasta dough is so dry and non-sticky that the brush and a toothpick should be more than sufficient to get your attachments clean. I'm also happy to report that I didn't find any metal shavings in the "throw-away" dough I made, though it's probably a good idea to run a batch of test dough through anyhow to be on the safe side. Enjoy!
I was looking for a crank type pasta maker when I stumbled accross this "attachment" option. I already own the big, expensive Kitchenaid mixer. Eventhough the attachments are more money than the "crank" things, I opted for this one and am glad that I don't have yet another "appliance" to store like that breadmaker.
To my delight, I was making superb fettuccine in no time at all. The fact that the only manual labor involved is a little bit of kneading is simply amazing. I found speed 4 was the optimal one; slower and the dough was more likely to get bubbles in it. I had the dirt problem with the first batch, so I just ran that through about a million times and then threw it away. All the subsequent batches came out flawlessly. The pasta I made was lighter and smoother than any pasta I have made from dried or fresh store-bought pasta. The texture was very pleasing. More variety in the cutter attachments would be nice, and I'd gladly pay for more choices. That said, even with the existing shape choices, this product is superb. ... Read more | |

I got mine as a wedding present, and I've already gotten a lot of quality use out of it. Most of the tools are long handled to give you good clearance from the heat, and the spatula is not only wide enough for the Big Burgers but it also has a sharpened edge to allow you to check "doneness" without having to reach for another tool. The fork, knife, tongs, and basting brush are also well designed for their purposes and the Four "kebob" skewers are made out of solid, polished metal so the food slides right off. The eight corn picks are a nice touch, as are the salt and pepper set (they arrive empty, so fill them with the spice/rub of your choice), and for after-grill cleanup there's a nice and solid grill brush with spare head. Everything fits securely in its own place either with elastic straps or with velcro attachments, so nothing clatters around when you move it from your kitchen, to your deck, to your tailgate party, to your...well, you get the idea. *grin*

I've had a number of popcorn poppers 'cause I'm a true fan, whether unadorned popcorn or 'fancied up'. When the hot air poppers came out about 20 years ago I bought a couple of them, but they always seem to make chewy popcorn that'll stick in the back of your throat. I've got a mint-condition Mirro aluminum electric popper from the sixties and it'll burn corn in the bottom before you can turn around. West Bend used to make this same type popper but without the stirrer. I had that one also, and it still left a fair number of kernels at the bottom. The stirring rod is what makes the difference with this popper. Not only will it pop more kernels in ANY brand of popcorn, but it will pop far more with the less expensive brands like Jolly Time. It's typical to get no more than a tablespoon or less of unpopped kernels. The popcorn turns out perfectly done, from the earliest to the last popped. If you look at the photo, the disc on the top is a removable cover; under there is an indention with multiple holes. You can take butter or margarine and spread it around when you set the machine up. Then, as the machine starts popping, the steam melts the butter and it goes on the corn! Or, if you prefer buttering later, just leave the lid on. When the corn is popped, you simply flip the appliance over and the large dome becomes the serving bowl. The dome and the disc on top have been through my dishwasher dozens of times without any problem. If I hand-wash it, it always feels a little greasy. The bottom, heating part of the appliance is nonstick; you simply wipe it out with a soapy dishrag or paper towel. Couldn't be easier. This appliance is light in weight and fits fine in one of my overhead cabinets. For only a small amount of oil, it'll make six quarts of the best popcorn you can find! Plus, its tolerance to less-expensive non-gourmet corns means you'll spend less money. Highly recommended!
It's gone in & out of fashion in my family over the years, but we still can't find anything that does a better job, short of a commercial popper. So many people out there are interested in faster, unattended popping. Part of the fun IS taking the time to relax and enjoy watching the Stir Crazy perform! How many kids will have fond memories of sitting in front of the microwave and watching a bag? Think about it! I'll continue to use ours until it's life is over. I am also going to order a replacement, just in case it is no longer available for some reason in the future. Buy it, Pop it, enjoy the show! You won't be sorry!

I read in a review for this product that it doesn't last. What could possibly be wrong with this when you need to chop something really fast? Like any normal person, I use the device, clean it and put it away. Simple as that! You can even go as far as using it and putting it back in the box. That is what I did up til the time the wall mount was set up. Now I can watch my weight, drink homemade milkshakes, and chop away at those tear jerking onions without shedding a single tear. Watch out for how much pressure you apply to the speed accelerator button, because you may find your cake mix blending in pretty well with the paint on your wall. In that case, avoid using a shallow bowl. Use a deeper mixing bowl, bigger than the size recommended for your ingredients. Happy cooking! Hope my review helped you.
Since the blades are exposed, any pressing of the button will chop anything in its path, and that includes fingers. Now, with the new model, it can stay pluged in and safe, since it stays detached until use (at least in my case). Of course, none of this speaks to this thing being much easier to clean than the previous one. I detach after use, run under hot water, then place on a paper towel to dry. If I'm in a hurry, I just drop in a water-filled glass in the sink and deal with it later. It doesn't stain, even with blueberries, so there isn't a need to deal with it immediately. However, I would not recommend putting this in the dishwasher. There's no need to and the prolonged heat might damage it. That's just my suspicion. At any rate, cleaning the old one required attention to it immediately after use. Anyway, I use this thing almost daily for protein shakes (smoothies). I'm considering a smoothie maker since I want something to make in the morning and have made for several more shakes during the day. However, even with a smoothie maker, I'll still use this Braun blender on stuff that would create a mess in the smoothie machine. For example, one shake I make with protein powder, milk, a few small ice cubes and peanut butter. I swear that tastes just like a melted Blizzard from Dairy Queen, for those of you that have had them. You would NOT want to make anything with Peanut butter in a smoothie maker or blender. With the Braun, its a snap!
So I called Braun. I admit I was hoping they would offer to give me a replacement motor unit. Nope. I asked about repair, but apparently, nobody fixes things anymore. Nor do they offer recycling. What they do offer is a heavy pitch to buy a whole new Braun blender set, even if all the attachments for your old one is perfectly fine. I had to argue with them for 15 minutes before they decided that they would just let me buy a new motor unit off of them for $20. A week later I got a box from Braun with... a whole new set of attachments. Not the motor unit. Needless to say, I'm never buying another Braun product again. If somebody wants the used attachments (whisk, chopper, blender, smoothie container), they're yours.

Another feature of this clock that is ideal for her is that the regular display is only lit when you want it to be lit. There are no glaring red numbers staring at you all night. When you want to see the time/temp, press the snooze button and the display lights for a few seconds. Now for the negatives of this great little gadget. It is very lightweight and the buttons sit smoothly at the bottom of the clock. It is difficult to tell one button from another or to even push the buttons to set the alarm, view, etc. Raised braille like nobs on the buttons would be helpful as well as making the base wider so it would be more difficult to knock it over. Also, if the clock is running off battery, you have the option of displaying the time on the ceiling only when you press the snooze button. However, if you use the A/C adapter, you're choices are continuous display or no display. The slide switch that controls this is on the side of the clock and is difficult to find by feel. Despite the few shortcomings of this clock, I still think it's wonderful and recommend it to anyone who is tired of squinting at glowing red dots to see what time it is; who wants to know the temperature both inside and out; and who always wants the correct time. ... Amazon.com Review Meats and fish are the obvious choices to take advantage of the Grilling Machine's fat-reduced grilling, but vegetables and tofu dogs work well too. The double-sided grill means food cooks twice as fast, leaves attractive grill marks, and generates surprisingly little smoke. --Julija Gelazis Features Reviews (353)
I'm out of college now, and I bought the bigger version of the George Foreman grill! It's GREAT about cutting the fat, as most of the grease drains off in to an easy to clean plastic container. The plastic container can go in the dishwasher, and the grill itself has a really good nonstick surface which cleans easily with a damp sponge or rag. It also cooks pretty fast, quicker than a conventional grill I think. I cook a few chicken breasts on it in about 10-15 minutes (depending on how big they are), and it heats up super fast - so no worrying about charcoal and starting fires! It's insanely easy to use, teenagers and slightly younger kids could probably use it with no problem. I highly recommend this grill - it's worth every cent!
