If top-shelf Henckels knives will break your bank, you can still get high-quality performance and construction with the mid-range Henckels Gourmet line. A full-size collection, this 18-piece set thoroughly outfits a chef, as well as eight steak dinner guests. Each Gourmet knife is stamped from a single piece of high-carbon stainless steel, honed by hand, and hardened by the Friodur ice process, for maximum strength and stain-resistance. These knives boast a full tang, which is triple-riveted to a contoured handle made of Novadur polypropylene. This construction is impact-resistant, comfortable to hold, and durable. Complete with its own storage block, the set includes seven kitchen knives: a 3-inch parer, a 6-inch utility, an 8-inch carver, an 8-inch chef’s, an 8-inch bread, a 6-inch chef’s, and a 5-inch serrated utility. It also includes eight steak knives, a 9-inch steel for sharpening, and a pair of kitchen shears. The block has three extra slots for adding knives as needed. The set is safe for the dishwasher, but washing by hand is recommended. Henckels includes a lifetime warranty. --Emily Bedard

Perfect for reducing sauces or cooking vegetables on the stovetop and for braising meat in the oven, this shallow, 2-1/2-quart saucepan is coated with nonstick inside to release food readily and clean easily. The nonstick is durable enough to go safely into the oven at temperatures up to 450 degrees F. Made of heavy-gauge aluminum with a matte finish, the pan conducts heat uniformly and quickly. Because the aluminum is anodized it's harder than steel and the pan won't scratch, chip, or crack. The oval, brushed stainless-steel handle stays cool on the stovetop and has a hanging hole for the pan to be stored on hook or peg. The domed glass lid collects and returns moisture to food and permits monitoring of cooking without reducing the temperature inside the pan. 5-0 out of 5 stars A quality saucepan, solid, attractive, works well.
I bought this shallow saucepan and it works rather well. It has a quality feel, very solid and sturdy, and is attractive too! The nonstick is good quality and food cooks more quickly because the pan has more surface area. I use this pan for soups mainly. A little heavy, but isn't every quality pan heavy? Looks attractive and I got a great price, less than it is now. All in all, a great deal! Much better deal than I could have gotten in the store, that's for sure!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great saucepan, but I'm not a professional
I love this saucepan.

I am a graduate student and I don't earn enough to afford any other high-quality cookware, but this saucepan is a much better piece of equipment than the lower-end saucepans I own. For one thing, it heats evenly so that I don't burn my food as often. Also, it's thicker which makes it more forgiving of slight temperature variations.

I'm not a professional cook by any means, but I'm quite experienced for a male graduate student and I work hard in the kitchen. Good food is important to me, and good tools are essential. I rate this saucepan as highly as my set of J. A. Henckels knives. If you have ever used a set of those knives this should be equivalent to a letter of recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars great pan
wonderful pan easy to clean cooks food great would recommend this pan to anyone

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price
This is a wonderful pot. It's a bit wider than a large saucepan. The base is just a bit smaller than the larger burners on my stove, and it is wider at the top. It's just the right size and shape to make a generous portion of pasta sauce for two, including sauteeing the meat. Calphalon's Contemporary line is the best looking of all their pots. The handle is a bit long, but feels great in your hand, smooth, and stays cool. I like the glass lids to be able to see in the pots, though I worry a bit about dropping one. They have a ribbon of stainless around the edge, which might prevent breakage though. If you don't have the cash to buy a full set of these, start with this pot, it's a bargain. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Gotta have it!
I got the George Foreman Contact Roaster for a Mother's Day gift. I love kitchen gadgets and could not wait to add this one to my collection. The first thing I cooked in it was the egg casserole (recipe in the booklet) and it turned out great. The second thing I made was a 3 lb. chicken. The aroma as it cooked was amazing. It was moist, tender and juicy. It took an hour and a half to cook. I would suggest NOT to line your roaster with sliced onions as I did to enhance the flavor of the chicken. The onions carmelized, then burned and got stuck in the drip hole. It was not very easy to clean that out. The roaster is also a bit small. I wish I would have requested the larger model as we are a family of 4 (soon to be 5) and I can see us outgrowing this appliance long before it wears out. I love to create recipes and cannot wait to see what I am able to concoct to cook in this roaster. It is very versetile and does not heat up the kitchen. It is smaller than the crock pot I used to have, and I probably will never buy another seeing how much fat this machine drains from meats. I will never again cook a chicken in a crock pot and let it sit in all that grease! The booklet that comes with the roaster is easy to read, although there are not many recipes in it. The little cleaning tool is great, it works very well and the additional drip tray comes in handy in case you have a very fatty cut of meat or you want to cook a second item right after the first is finished cooking. All in all, a wonderful appliance and highly reccomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handiest thing in the kitchen
In addition to being an avid reader, I enjoy cooking. This appliance is the best thing on my counter. The first night after it arrived, I roasted a whole 4-1/2 pound chicken. I slid some fresh sage and rosemary under the skin, placed it in the cooker breast side down, added some baby potatoes and sliced onions, set the timer, and ignored it for the next hour. The wonderful aromas coming out of it were hard to ignore, but I resisted the temptation to open it up during the cooking process. My chicken was thoroughly done but moist, tender, and very flavorful. Although I had pulled out the abdominal fat, about 1/4" of grease dripped out into the tray during cooking. That was fat that didn't end up in my body. Last night I roasted an inexpensive pork roast along with some whole carrots and created a delicious dinner. I highly recommend this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and Fun to Use
What I like about this Contact Cooker is that it's perfect for roasting chickens (less than 5 lbs), roasts, and whatever else you can fit in the cooker's cavity. It heats up in less than five minutes and is ready to go when you are.

The cooker comes with a removable insert which I used most of the time so the meat can roast in it's own juices. It also makes it easier to collect the juice for gravy, just make sure to use pot holders.

The only cons I have are:

1. The insert tray handles stick out of the sides of the cooker. It gets hot and can burn you if you're not paying attention. Plus, an unknowing person may accidently try to pick up the cooker thinking their handles for the cooker itself. It can be a potentially very dangerous situation when the cooker is being used.

2. You don't have a choice to the heat settings. Heck, it took me a while to find out what the cooker's heat setting was. It's a permanent 325. But, since you're cooking using all sides of the cooker, the temperature is quite practical for all meats.

3. The cooking cavity is not as big as I would like it to be. It's fine for anything less than 5 lbs and not overly large. Great for family meals of 4 or less - but don't expect to fit a pork shoulder roast or Thanksgiving turkey. It also doesn't allow room for me to slip in a temperature probe very well.

The Pros:

1. Easy to clean. The teflon coating clean up really nice. The insert tray take a little more work to clean, but it's not too bad.

2. Fast warm up. It's ready in less than 5 minutes.

3. Doesn't radiate heat as much like your oven would. A big plus, especially in the summer time.

4. Less mess overall. I use less pots and pans. What a relief.

5. Just about foolproof if you follow directions. Even though I like using temperature probes to keep tabs on my food, it really isn't necessary to do so.

This is a really nice cooker to have. Lots of pluses to having it, especially when you start using it. You'll discover the benefits yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars George Foreman Contact Cooker
I love this cooker. For a family of 2 or 3 this is great. Just the right size. It easily cooks a 5# chicken. I put a pork roast in the roasting pan and it came out so tender and juicy. Fixed wings first by putting in the bottom part and getting rid of some of the grease then put them in the roasting pan, then added barbeque sauce. Great. Would recommend this to anyone. Especially someone watching not to eat alot of grease. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Fumes and Smoke
After reading all of the wonderful reviews of this product, I decided to try it out despite the somewhat high cost. I've been both pleased and disappointed.

I've baked 3 or batches of chocolate chip cookies on these sheets, and they've turned out great, regardless of what type of pan I use underneath. The bottoms of the cookies haven't burnt, and the insides are well done. I've also tried homemade pizza crust on the silpat, and they've also turned out wonderfully.

My dissappointment and concern comes every time I bake with the silpat. Every time I use it to bake at around 375* and when I open the oven door, a light fog like smoke comes out of the oven which burns my nostrils and my eyes. About 5 minutes into the cooking, the smoke detector consistently goes off. I already have concerns putting my food in contact with a silicone surface, but the fumes were just unbearable.

After searching around on the internet to see if anyone else had the same problem, I've only found one other person. Even after returning the silpat in exchange for a new one, I had the same problem, and that time I only put the silpat in, no cookies, no cookie pan. I think this time I'll just have to return it for good. I won't be surprised if 20 years down the road they say that cooking with silicon products causes cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for cookies!
I have owned my Silpat since my mother gifted me with it over a year ago. I'm a frequent baker and love to make cookies in particular (usually chocolate chip). My cookies were always good, but now they are perfect, even when baked in a very low quality oven. My cookies don't cook too quickly on the bottoms, they have always come out evenly cooked for me. Perhaps if you are having a problem with uneven cooking you need to upgrade your baking pan. The Silpat can be a little difficult to clean because of its floppy nature, but I usually just keep it on the baking pan. That keeps it flat and much easier to handle. All in all I would recommend this product very highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better for Bread than Cookies
I use two cookie sheets at once: one with the Silpat and one with parchment paper. The Silpat cookies are over-cooked on the bottom; The parchment cookies are much better. On the other hand, parchment paper is a pain in the neck to use. The cookies contain a lot of butter so they leave an oily circle on the Silpat that really sticks to it. I had a dried cherry stick to it like glue once.

I think that a nonstick cookie sheet is easier to clean than a big floppy thing like the Silpat. Since the Silpat does not produce better baked goods, I don't see the advantage over the nonstick cookie sheet.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have
This is an excellent item to have about the kitchen. I only suggest two things. First, I would purchase two: one for savory items and one for sweet, as certain strong odors and oils tend to linger. Second, do not use soap on these, a good wipe with warm water and a gentle cloth will suffice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works beautifully
As advertised, these baking sheets keep your baked goods from sticking to the pan. Even particularly brittle or sticky recipes such as almond tuiles or molasses cookies will come clean.
I initially had the same problem as a couple of other reviewers of having the sheets smoke and set off my smoke alarm, but after several cycles in the oven and dishwasher it stopped happening.
Make sure you use these sheets with the smooth side up. The woven side will stick to food. (You can tell when you have the wrong side up because the writing will be backwards.) ... Read more

Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big,self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litterpleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the boxtriggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then arake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in aplastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed untilthe next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for anotherdeposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 incheslong, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged intoa wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (notincluded). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the boxand cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses atthe slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the boxbefore the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. Thelitter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 incheshigh, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of thesame size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. 4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for the lazy cat owner
I figured this was another over hyped, useless product I'd regret buying, but I was (happily) wrong. The cats (2) and I both love it. Using a regular litter box I had problems with one of my cats urinating on bath rugs, in the bathtub, etc.: I guess I just didn't keep the litter box clean enough for her. As soon as I got the Littermaid the problem disappeared!

A few tips from an experienced owner:
-The litter receptacles are disposable, but only if you're a millionaire. And it's really nasty to clean them. I reccomend lining the litter receptacles with plastic grocery store bags. Remove the plastic bag, tie it up & throw it in the trash. This way you can re-use the disposable recepticles many, many times, without cleaning them.
-Yes, it's noisy, but not any noisier than 2 cats playing tag in the middle of the night! Mine's in the kitchen, just down a short hall from my bedroom, but I sleep with my door closed & it's not a problem for me.
-Yes, the cats track the litter, but no worse than a "regular" litter box using the same (premium clumping) litter.

Until I can train the cats to use the same toilet I do (fat chance, I can't even get them to answer to their names), this is as good a solution as I think I'm going to find.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok for one cat, good for travelers
While this box does what it's advertised to do (rake litter and remove the lumps), it should be used with some cautions:

1. Two cats? Well, not ours. They need two boxes, maybe three. The vet says X+1 box for the cats you have, to avoid spraying and fighting. We find this to be true.

2. The litter is not able to be put in very deep in this box, and you have to be careful what kind you use.

3. The little plastic container for the uh, lumps, fills up and you need to replace it often. They are a bit costly.

For ONE cat, if you go away for say an overnight and have a food dispenser and water fountain, can work to keep the box sanitary. And for finicky cats (we have one) who refuse to use the box unless it's cleaned EACH TIME (yes, this cat turns up his nose unless you are on 24 hour litterbox patrol) well, for this kind of cat, the LitterMaid is excellent.

YOU MUST follow the directions exactly or it will jam, and that's not fun to clean. So I recommend it for one cat, or if you are able to, get a couple of them for multiple cats.

1-0 out of 5 stars It arrives broken
Yes, it's true. I ordered not one (returned because it arrived broken), but two (it arrived broken) and three (sic). The two tiny arms are pathetic - just waiting to be snapped. If someone ever did get this product right - well, they would have to have at least 2.3% of a cat's IQ.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth it Anymore!
I bought my first Littermaid and it lasted 5 years and I thought it was the greatest thing. When it finally broke, I rushed out to buy a new one. What a mistake. I have had 2 of the new ones, (the $99 model) and both have broken within a month. I guess the company decided to get cheap and now the product stinks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I was so excited to get this product, but after a couple weeks use, I started having the same problems as other reviewers. The clumps would stick to the rake and the bottom of the pan, and would jam it so the rake would get too heavy and couldn't lift it up high enough to dump it. I have two cats, and both of my cats have a tendency to use the same corner everytime, so that the waste receptacle was always full on one side and empty on the other, unless I constantly got in and redistributed. I would have to redistribute the clumps for the rake to work as well. Otherwise it was too heavy on one side and would get stuck. Then it tries a few more times to scoop the clumps up, but it is so noisy that it wakes you up with all its struggles in the middle of the night.
I have had for about 5 months now, and this morning at 4am, it broke. The whole arm with the rake and the motor broke clean off, and I can see no way to repair it. However, after it broke, the motor continued to run and run until I got up and turned it off. I am quite disappointed, and do not plan to buy a second one and try again. I am surprised after reading all of the bad reviews that LitterMaid has not improved their product. I am also surprised they are even still in business. As soon as I can save some money, I am purchasing the Litter Robot. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best coffee I've ever had
I previously owned a (much) smaller version of this press, which made an excellent cup of coffee. But that was the problem. It only made a CUP of coffee. I usually have two, and what if others want coffee? It takes a while, going one cup at a time.

Needless to say, I upgraded to this larger press, which makes about 3 times more coffee. It makes the best coffee ever - I could never go back to a junky old drip coffee maker after this. Yeah, it's more work than a drip coffee maker, but really, would you rather have quick, easy coffee that tastes bad, or a delicious cup of coffee that takes 5 minutes more?

Using this is like steeping tea - you boil some water, grind some coffee beans (I hope you're grinding your own coffee beans!) and pour the water over the coffee grounds to let them steep for 4 minutes. Then you push the knob down, which filters delicious coffee into the water and leaves the grounds at the bottom of your pot. Then, voila! You've got about 3 cups of yummy coffee, depending on to what extent you water your cup down with cream and sugar.

If you're one of those people who just CAN'T WAIT for their coffee, you'd be better off getting a typical drip coffee maker. But if you love coffee, and want it to taste as good as it possibly can, you have to buy this press.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Full Experience
I just got this one (Bodum Chambord 8-cup) yesterday and am very happy with the results. My first cup was with four scoops (included with press) of coarsely ground Starbucks Yukon Blend and about 14 oz of water for a four-minute steep. The result was a hair on the strong side, but without a doubt the most robust, flavorful cup of coffee I have ever had, with no harshness at all. Some sediment in the bottom of the cup from a minimal amount of coffee bean dust that got through the mesh plunger, but nothing too bothersome. Cleanup is no more difficult than with a drip coffee maker, and no more fumbling with paper filters. Not sure about the other models, but the glass carafe on this one is large enough to accommodate a hand and sponge, which makes it easy to clean. For entertaining, I would get the 12-cup version. Product seems well made, and plunger action is smooth and easy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Consistently Excellent Coffee
Having just moved, my husband and I were recently deprived of our favorite coffee chain (which doesn't serve our area). All the local coffee houses have so far produced either inconsistent results, or their coffee was consistently of poor quality.

We purchased this unit as an experiment, because we heard good things about french presses. We have been extremely satisfied with the results. This little unit makes consistently excellent coffee, with an incredibly good flavor. We follow the same guidelines as those on the other reviews here: coarsely ground coffee, cooled-for-a-few-seconds-after-boiling water, and the coffee is served immediately after pressing it.

The only reason that I gave this product 4 stars is the usual: this does *not* make 8 cups of coffee by American standards. It makes enough for 1 large mug and 1 smaller mug of coffee. That is just barely enough for us, and it's excellent stuff, so I'm satisfied, but it's only 8 cups by European standards. We'll shortly be upgrading to the stainless steel larger version of this press.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK, but not as it's hyped
After seeing a french press on TV and reading the reviews I wanted one of these things to get the "greatest cup of coffee ever". After following the directions and recommendations on using it for about a month I can say that I have not noticed any big difference from the drip coffee I used to make. The press does take an insignificant amount more of effort than a drip maker but it's not hard to make or clean. I just haven't noticed any more flavor, richness, or aroma in the coffee to justify the cost of the press. I'm going to go back to the drip coffeemaker for everyday coffee making and use the press only when I want to "impress" somebody. LOL

5-0 out of 5 stars "Cowboy Coffee" for the 21st century
The Chambord brews your coffee right at your table. It's probably the richest cup of coffee you'll experience. It's made virtually the same way the cowboys made their coffee. The big exeception is that the grounds are pressed whereby all the coffee oils are present. It's as simple as making instant coffee, with 10X the flavor. ... Read more

Opening the oven to check on a food's temperature means wasting the cook's time and losing oven temperature and moisture--not to mention a face full of steam. This thermometer prevents those problems. Insert the instrument's 6-inch stainless-steel probe into a roast beef or turkey and monitor the time and temperature (from 32 to 392 degrees F) on the thermometer's large digital display, which connects to the probe with a 4-foot cord. The control panel sets cooking time and temperature, and an alarm sounds when either is reached. Fully opened, the thermometer/timer is 5 inches high, but it folds in half for compact storage. Magnets on the back permit it to be temporarily mounted on a metal surface. --Fred Brack ... Read more

Have used my Taylor digital for a chicken and a pork loin, what a differance. Knowing the exact internal temperature is a huge plus. I have usually over cooked and ended up with dry food. This time it was moist and perfectly done. Thanks Taylor and Thank You Amazon.

I have had my Taylor for one and 1/2 years. It is very reliable. I have another thermometer that I use to calibrate and they are always on target. I have bought several and given them as gifts. For $13.00 you can't beat it..

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurracy CANT be determined by boiling water.
FIRST: i am VERY PLEASED with this therm. i make candy sauces which require precision temp for edible results. it's always been a sort of hit or miss operation for me before, requiring a lot of babysitting to make sure i get the temp just right. for the first time ever, i'm not only making perfect sauces everytime but i'm not tied to the stove. the very audible ring allows me to do other things around the house while waiting. the reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5? because its requires some creativity to attach it to the pan in a way that keeps it suspended in the liquid. i'm so pleased i was going to send one to my mom via this web site. that's when i stumbled upon these disagreeable reviews. puzzled that i was getting such good results with mine amid all these complaints, i measured the 'boiling point' of water as well, and several times it came out at 210 F. that's when my chem backround kicked in. i remembered...(and here's where my second point comes in) SECOND: for those of you who complained about it's accurracy, it's important to keep in mind that the real world boiling point of water is contingent on several factors including the purity of the water (i.e. softening salts), elevation, humidity and room temp. all will affect the final outcome. there is a wide variation (with 208F (97.7 C) being within the range) in the 'true' temp of boiling water. if you dont believe me, you can visit: /index.html this web site is challenging schools around the world to measure the boiling point of water, and has posted some of the results. i challege you to try something other than water that requires a measure of accuracy and see if you still have problems. ... For fluffy, evenly sized cheese shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The large handle allows for a firm grip, and the completely flat grating surface makes it easy to move the cheese across the blades. Carrots, onions, and medium to firm cheeses all worked beautifully with this grater. It's also an excellent choice for larger strips of citrus zest or ginger. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd bought this grater MONTHS ago!
I purchased this after spending 2 hours zesting limes for a gourmet cookie recipe with the traditional potato-peeler+ food processor method. The most time consuming part is carefully scraping way all the white pith on the inside of the peel. The pith is very bitter and can ruin your recipe. This zester did the same job in 30 seconds and didn't even touch the pith. Just pure, perfect lime zest with no effort. Totally worth its weight in gold. Now I can make those cookies again without my hands cramping up after hours scraping the peels. Who has time for that?

I've also started using it for grating parmesan. Definately takes Ceaser salads and pasta up a notch. I'm purchasing several more as gifts for my friends. Would make an incredible (and cheap) holiday/birthday gift for anyone, even the casual cook. Please note that the size of the grated zest or cheese is very fine and not ideal as a garnish. Parmesan or Romano grated with this tool melts quickly into the pasta, and doesn't lend much to the presentation. Tastes great, but hard to see. If you're looking for a garnishing tool, this is not it.

5-0 out of 5 stars an absolute marvel
This tool takes the place of several little gadgets in my kitchen. I had a little handheld zester that worked fine, but was somewhat difficult in trying to get the maximum amount of zest from a lemon or lime. Not a problem for this tool. A few quick rubs around the fruit, and you have lemon/lime zest confetti.
Grated cheese? This tool gets the cheese so fluffy and light that it melts in no time, and is much easier to use than my traditional grater. I'm a little nervous about using it for things like nutmeg or dried ginger, but that's just because I don't know if it can be done. For anything soft, like fresh ginger, garlic, cheese, zest, this is perfect. The shreds are probably too fine for things like zuccini, so it won't COMPLETELY replace your box grater, but it sure makes fine shredding a lot easier.
The only (MINOR) drawback is that it can be difficult clean, espcially since the pieces can get very small and melt or stick quickly, and the ridges on the underside can capture things and make it difficult to get to them, but aside from that, this is a wonderful product. BETTER than a zester or grater.

5-0 out of 5 stars I must admit that I was a bit skeptical
I resisted buying the microplane grater for quite a while, despite the glowing reviews I was reading everywhere. I finally gave in and wow! I'm not easily impressed by new gadgetry and I already had several graters.

This grater is incredible! I grate a lot of Parmesano Reggiano, and those that use it a lot know that it's a bear to grate. If it's even slightly old, it gets crumbly and it's tough even when super-fresh.

The microplane grater really reduces all hard cheeses to the finest angelhair-like strands with almost no effort at all. I was truly amazed by it.

In my opinion, though, it doesn't work well at all for zesting. If you want to zest citrus, stick with a traditional zester. No matter how careful I am, it always takes off too much pith. I found it didn't work well for grating onion, either. Onion isn't easy to grate in any case, but this reduced it to juice..had to use my fine box grater.

But as I said, for cheese, this grater is the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This is the best kitchen item ever...It works really well, and makes grating & zesting much simpler. I am from Russellville, AR, where the makers of this dandy gadget are from. I can't believe I am from the town that made this great tool, but I am. Good job to them for helping out all cooks everywhere. These are sharp tools though, so don't let the kids play with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow , worth its weight in gold!
I used this recently for an orange sweet bread recipe. It works so effortlessly. I have avoided fresh Lemon and orange peel in the past because grating it was very time consuming. And sometmes you went too deep and added unwanted bitterness to your recipe. The fresh peel tastes sooooo much better and with the microplane it is really easy. I can't wait to try fresh ginger root. This opens a whole new realm of easy and tasty possibilities. ... Read more

This set supplies a cook with a variety of cutting edges and a solid wood block to store them in. The set consists of four kitchen knives, sturdy kitchen shears, a sharpening steel, and the block, which has four extra slots. An 8-inch chef's, a 3-inch paring, an 8-inch carving, and a 5-inch serrated utility knife make up the knives in the set. Classic three-rivet handles distinguish Pro S from Henckels's other quality knives. That makes Pro S handles heavier and knives less weight-forward. Handles are also smaller, which those with small hands might appreciate. Except for fully forged blades less than 6 inches long, such as the paring and utility knives in this set, the blades and bolsters of Henckels's first-rate cutlery lines are formed by a high-tech welding process that combines three high-carbon, stainless-steel types into what appears to be a single piece so a knife's parts have distinct, desirable characteristics. All pieces in the set carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit disappointed, but okay and will keep it.
i just got this set after reading the rave reviews posted here. Upon receiving the item, i did a thorough examination and was a bit disappointed with the quality and the packaging. the packaging used is cheap thin corrugated cardboard box and the knives are loosely placed in it where rattling and banging are sure to occur during shipping; though, individual blades are protected with a clear plastic sleeve, except the sheer, that can only be removed by torn it into pieces from the blade and thus made it unusable for future storage purposes. i also examined the sharp edges of the blades the way a carpenter would examine the straightness of a long piece of wood and found that the blades are all crooked, with the chef knife having the most noticeable skewness. With this kind of price, one would expect, at the LEAST, that the sharp edges of the blades to be straight. As for the wood block, all the opening slots where knives are inserted are roughly carved with wood sprinkles noticeably shown all around. Overall it's a good product, but not worth this kind of pricing. Another overhyped and overpriced European product. I would say if you are not looking for brand name, you can get lesser expensive non-European products that are as effective and save your money for your kids' education.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a start
I'm not an expert in the kitchen, but I wanted a good set of knives. I debated between this and the 9 piece set. The 9 pc. set adds an 8" bread knife and a 6" utility knife to this set, for more [$$$]. I opted instead for this set, and purchased a bread knife (actually the 9" French bread knife) . Instead of the utility knife, I bought a carving fork through open stock to complement the carving knife. Total cost was about the same as the 9 pc. set.

Do a little searching on the Internet; you will find plenty of tutorials on how to hone your knives, how to sharpen them, and how to use them correctly. I had never really used good knives before, and now I actually look like I know what I'm doing. These knives wipe clean easily; don't ruin your investment by putting them in the dishwasher.

Incidentally, I thought I would never use the utility scissors, and I find myself using them all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great set
I love this set. I wish I had it years ago. It would have saved alot of tearing. Cuts through a cabbage in less than 2 seconds. Steel scratches easily though, but other than that, the quality is great. I thought of buying a non-German brand that came with more knives for less cost, but it turns out that this set has all the knives most people need, except the bread knife.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Knives I'VE ever used!!
I'm no knife expert, but I've never regretted purchasing this set: they're beautiful and they really do the job! To be able to easily slice through raw meat, vegetables, tough skinned tomatoes - well, it's a pleasure to work with these knives! I can't recommend them highly enough! ... Read more

This espresso/coffeemaker by Krups is one fine combination. On the coffee side it has a 24-hour programmable clock/timer that lets you set the current time and program the timer for "wake-up" coffee. With a 10-cup serving capacity the coffeemaker automatically shuts off after two hours for added safety. And for the impatient coffee lover, there's "stop 'n' serve," which allows you to remove the carafe at any time during the brewing cycle for up to 20 seconds, serve, then replace on warming plate for continued brewing. The removable filter holder swings away for convenient refills and easy cleanup. The double-wall construction keeps heat from escaping during brewing, preserving coffee's aroma and flavor. The espresso/cappuccino side has an advanced system that ensures quick heat-up time and a rotary steam knob that enables you to steam milk or dispense hot water for tea. The "perfect froth" attachment produces great looking, tasty froth. The 37-ounce removable water reservoir produces continuous cups of espresso, so it can please a crowd. --Jane DePaolo

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Well Made Machine
Well After looking at other combination machines I settled on this one. I was rather nervous after reading some of the reviews on this site, as I hadn't seem them before ordering it. But as usual you have to take alot of the dribble on here with a grain of salt. After setting it up and running a couple of pots through it (no the handle didnt fall off of the pot)I made two demi's of espresso, even with a french roast and a hasty regrind of the "drip" ground coffee I had in the freezer it was one of the most delicious "shots" in recent memory. A fine crema on top, very hot and full of flavor. Clever storage under the lid for sieves and scoop. Makes coffee like a charm as well. The auto start feature is of couse a necessity for any one who hates waiting for a pot to finish in the morning . I have not had any problems with the drip stop as I always let the full pot brew, yes I am a coffee snob. But I would suspect that it would last for a long time if you dont jam the pot into it. I would recommend this quality machine to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice machine
I purchased the the Krups Caffe Centro because of its quality and price compared to other units. I was not disappointed with the styling and quality. It is very easy to use and makes excellent coffee/espresso. I was surpised by the major improvements in the quality of the drip coffee over previous Krups models. The esspresso, although it works very well, seems to deliver a bit less quantity than I had expected. After trying several different grinds and quantities of espresso, I still could only get about 1.5 oz with the single seive and around 3 oz with the double seive. Overall very nice, albeit a bit short in espresso.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and reliable
I recieved my Krups coffee/espresso maker as a gift more than 3.5 years ago and it has been absolutely great. I use it once a day to brew coffee and about once a month to make lattes. The parts are all easy to take apart to clean and easy to use. I love the fact that all the pieces (espresso filters and tablespoon) fit inside the lid so I never misplace them.

The reasons why I don't give this 5 stars are that there are no outwardly visible indicators for water levels on either the espresso or coffee sides and the spring to stop the coffee from dripping if the pot is removed needs a little fiddling to work these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easily makes wonderful espresso and coffee
I bought this machine elsewhere, without first reading the reviews here, and was startled to see so many negative marks. Although I have only owned it for about a month, it has functioned wonderfully. It makes delicious espresso -- much better than the espresso that I used to make with a bargin machine that I used to own. Further, the frother is easy to use and clean. The drip coffee is also very tasty.

My only complaints are minor: I have to pull the machine out away from the wall so the lid won't hit the kitchen cabinets when I open it. Also, I wish it had a meter showing how much water was in the espresso reservoir (I just top it off before I start the machine).

1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it negative stars I would!!!
I got this as a Christmas gift and was so excited about it! After making coffee twice,(the pot and lid are very cheap quality) it no longer worked, so I took it to be repaired. The shop sent it to Krupps, 9 weeks later I finally got it back. The element was bad and had burnt out (nothing I did). I was just glad to have my EXPENSIVE maker back. The next morning I poured water in, and it came out the bottom of the machine!! It is now at Krupps service department again. It has been there for a month now, I have spoken to someone at Krupps, and still have no response. DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS MACHINE OR COMPANY!! It is the begining of April and have had 2 cups of coffee from this maker that I have owned for over 3 months. I have been using the same $25 "Mr. Coffee" maker for 10years now without one problem!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
I have been using my deluxe queen aero bed for the last 2 weeks straight while I help transition my baby into her own room & am thrilled with it. It is really comfortable & has held it's firmness incredibly well (I have only needed to give it one small burst of air in this time). Of course, I cannot comment on it's durability - but so far, I am really pleased with this product. Very, very comfortable & easy to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money Continual Leaks
What a waste of money! I returned the first aerobed because of continual holes and leaks popping up in the coil areas and it is and ongoing problem with this newer one. I called the aerobed help number and they told me that my 30 days were up and would not refund or at least exchange it for a "3rd" bed. Actually they were quick to note that this model number was no longer covered by warranty anyway. convienient for them. All my patches are gone and today I am headed to K-Mart or who knows where to hopefully find some more patches that will hopefully work. I'd rate it a 0 if I could!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my REGULAR bed!!
I purchased this Aero bed 2 years ago to replace an old waterbed. I wanted one of those "Select Comfort" beds, but just couldn't afford their steep price! I saw an Aero bed television ad, which suggested you could use this as an everyday bed. I found my solution! I keep the Aero bed on the old platform the waterbed used to sit on. I can adjust the comfort level of the bed. I have to tell you, I actually look forward to getting into my cozy bed at night! I did enhance it by adding a mattress pad with extra fill, but I love this bed!!

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY IT
Our AeroBed double is less than 4 years old, was used about a dozen times, and always kept in its bag in the house, except when we went camping.

We tried to use it the other day and found that it was separating where the "coils" are attached to the front and back. We no sooner fixed one leak, with a special repair glue, than another one sprang up. The repairs held, but all the seams at the coils seem to be undoing, one after the other.

My girlfriend bought the twin less than a year ago. She used hers as a bed. Hers is doing the same thing. She tried twice to repair hers with the repair kit that comes with the bed, but to no avail.

Aero Bed told us that we MUST have had ours exposed to extreme temperatures. Well, we all live in mild coastal CA, so we don't get temperature extremes like other places do.

They offer a limited one year warranty - not much for an item that can cost up to about $300, depending on the size and style.

Yes, it was comfortable while it stayed inflated. It isn't very comfortable now. This is a poor quality air mattress.

We ended up sleeping on our Coleman queen inflatable. My girlfriend was stuck on her couch. Our Coleman is the same design, about the same age and seems to be just fine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great experience with this opener
I received this can opener as a gift almost 9 years ago. Absolutely loved it from the first use - no sharp edges to worry about and rarely needs to be cleaned. Also, no flakes of metal and can label left on the counter. Now, over 8,000 cans of cat food later (and few human food cans), its starting to need 2 turns around the lid to unseal properly. I was afraid they didn't make it anymore but was happy to find it on Not sure why this technology hasn't totally replaced the traditional electric can opener.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ready to buy my third one.........won't buy anything else!
Love this can opener, after using others for years, felt like I found the only one for me! Am in the process of looking for the best price on my third one.........Just used the other two till they finally gave out after many years!!!No other one will do! Wish I could find a great deal on a dozen, know I could sell them to the neighbors!

1-0 out of 5 stars Like watching a roulette wheel
Loved this can opener when new. After 18 months, round and round it goes. Place your bets many revolutions will it take to open the can? Numerous revolutions leaves the can's edge ragged with the risk that metal shards might drop into the food. A very expensive lesson in poor design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good little machine!
We have had the Krups 404 for maybe 3 years now and it has been a wonderful addition to our kitchen. It is so much of an improvement over traditional can openers. The fact that no shavings get into the can that you are opening is a tremendous advantage. Also no sharp lids to cut your hand or fingers with. Since there are so many variations of cans to be opened we find an occasional one that needs a little encouragement (not at all unlike the previous top cutter one we had)and we use the hand opener once in awhile. Mostly because it probably needed more cleaning of the cutting wheels, which I finally undertook to do. It was full of metal shavings which were clogging up the mechanism and it can only get worse. I used a chemical agent to spray and remove them. It worked fabulously. Anything that is used to do this procedure is done at your own risk. Some of those things can be very hazardous such as pressure spray cleaners. The cost to replace the item may be a better option than useing chemicals. The unit is sealed for the most part and not user friendly to take apart. It would be nice to have a unitized cutter wheel assembly to remove and clean. Overall this little opener is a real plus for my wife and myself. She has used it a LOT!! She does NOT want to go back to the old top cutters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money...

High tech from tip to handle, Global knives from Japan created a sensation when they burst onto the world's culinary stage as an alternative to traditional European-style cutlery. Blades are made of hard molybdenum/vanadium stainless steel and "face-ground" with a long taper rather than a short bevel so edges remain sharp longer than high-carbon stainless-steel knives. Edges are ground razor-sharp at a more acute angle than traditional European-style knives. Although Global also makes a "heavyweight" line, its original knives--of which the three knives in this set are examples--have thinner blades and are lighter than traditional knives. Balance is achieved by injecting a precise amount of sand for a particular blade style into a hollow handle. To ensure balance is continuous, the sand flows inside the handle as a blade is maneuvered. A finger notch between blade and handle provides safety. Stainless-steel handles are molded to fit the hand and dimpled to resist slipping. Smaller around than many European-style handles, they're easy for small-handed cooks to grasp and seamless for sanitation.

These three knives--an 8-inch chef's knife, a 5-1/2-inch cook's knife, and a 4-inch paring knife--equip a cook to perform most basic kitchen tasks. The two smaller knives' wedge-shaped handles are particularly well engineered for grasping securely with a relaxed hand. Global recommends using a ceramic sharpener or a diamond steel instead of a metal sharpening steel for its knives, supplemented by a synthetic whetstone, a ceramic whetstone, or a Shinkansen sharpener. Global also makes a Sharpening Guide Rail so blades can be honed on a whetstone at the proper angle. Global knives should be hand washed to protect edges. They carry a lifetime warranty against defects and breakage. --Fred Brack ... Read more

brands, materials they are made of, and general sturdiness and price. My favorite is the Japanese Chefs Knife (ALSO CALLED SANTOKU) But I also love these three selections. If you are looking at purchasing ONLY ONE global knife I recommend the Santoku, but if you are looking at two, get this set! It is a STEAL!

YES, Global cutlery is EXPENSIVE! But compared to Wustof or Henkels, these knives
outshine, outsparkle, and outperform them by a longshot. Comparable in price with Wustof
and Henkels, for just a bit more money you can own the GOOD STUFF! An acquaintence of mine owns an upscale restaurant and he just replaced ALL of his Wustof knives in the kitchen to these GLOBAL GREATS!

Global knives are made of one, solid, sturdy, but amazingly light piece of steel. Very
balanced also! No worrying about wood or plastic handles, tangs or rivets here, nor
cleaning! They clean up like a breeze.

I love my knives and I know they will last me a lifetime. If they break Global has a lifetime guarantee!

Remember, my friends... You get what
you pay for and these beautiful and professional knives are worth their weight in gold! SO... Go Global, my gourmet gastronomical babies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a good home for my old Wusthofs
The only thing better than the way the Global knives cut is the way they look. I have been a diehard user of Wusthof Trident Gran Prix knives, but since I bought this set, I have stuck my Wusthofs in the drawer.

The edge on the blades is phenomonal, and I have yet to use the ceramic stone I got with this set. I have decided to replace all of my old knives over the next few months.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool, light, high-quality but not so ergonomic
The look is stunning, the blade quality is very high and the weight is much lighter than other knives. But the handle is not so ergonomic as some other knives (I like the twin select from Henckels) and gets quickly uncomfortably warm when I use it. I would recommend this knife to women due to its lightness and, of course, to design-lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Global Knives
We already had a Global Chef Knife when we got this 3 piece set last Christmas. We tried Global after buying a dissappointing Henkel. We are now diehard Global fans. When I visit people's homes and they have dull knives, I am further in love with my Global. It makes such a difference to have a good knife when cooking! Pay bon marche bon!

5-0 out of 5 stars We look for any excuse to use them
This may be a repeat of what you have already read, but these are by far the best knives that I have ever used. My wife and I started out with a Sabatier starter set (Chefstar), and the set was great, especially for the price. About a year later we got this set as a gift, and we literally look for reasons to cut food. These knives, along with an awesome set of cookware, are a wonderful cattleprod to direct anyone into cooking more at home.
Cutting meat is like passing the blade through water.
You know that the construction is solid. There are no joints in the knife at all.
Finally, the design of the knives goes quite well if you use a lot of stainless steel in your kitchen.
Just to beat a dead horse, these knives are the closest to the Platonic ideal of anything we own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Buy / Excellent Product
Wow! I received my sewing machine and am in complete awe at the price and quality of this machine. I haven't sewn in 20 years and can't believe how easy this machine is to use. Just take a few minutes to read the manual and you're set to go. The problem solving information was super helpful too. I have shopped around for a while and had an old Singer years ago, so I initially thought I'd go with a Singer model, but Boy! am I glad I didn't!!! This model is very sturdy and the quality is worth much more than this price. Within 2 hours I had set up the machine, read the manual, hemmed a pair of curtains, made a fleece throw and fixed a zipper in a pair of pants!!! I love the needle threader. I am so pelased with this machine that I'm telling everyone I know. If I can use this machine this quickly and successfully... anyone can!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine especially if you are a beginner
I have never really sewed anything in my life, except for a brief home ec. class in Junior High some 30 years ago. I always wanted to try to sew but I was too intimidated. Finally I saw this machine with its reviews and thought I would take a chance. It came in only a few days, and in an hour I was sewing my first skirt. It is very easy to operate. The bobbin fell out of the case, and I had no trouble understading how to put everthing back in place. The instructions are very easy to understand. I am having the most fun learning this wonderful new skill on this machine. It is very user friendly. If you ever wanted to learn to sew but thought it was much too complicated, then this is the machine for you. With all the new fabrics, technology, and things that are available along with this machine, sewing is a great recreational activity. My only regret is that I waited so long to try it. This machine, the Simplicity sewing book for beginners, and the Simplicity web site is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine!
I've owned this machine for under a week...and as a beginning sewer, I'm very impressed. Easy to use, easy to understand far two thumbs up!

3-0 out of 5 stars I've had fun...
but I've also been so frustrated I wanted to throw the thing against the wall! I had no previous experience sewing and needed a bit more than the manual supplied to get started. So after learning the very basics elsewhere (Sew Fast, Sew Easy- a great book) I use the Simplicity manual all the time and do like it. I have made handbags, pj's, fleece jackets, skirts, dresses, etc. without problem.

HOWEVER: At one point, and this may have been my fault, the machine completely stopped working, the entire shuttle race became damaged and I had to send it in for repairs. But this was completely covered by the warrenty so all I paid was $20 to ship it out (Simplicity paid return shipping- nice). And I should mention that I was emailing a customer service rep. at Simplicity for quite sometime about this issue and she was very helpful and timely.

HOWEVER #2: The so-called one-step buttonhole is making me one-step away from a nervous breakdown. I've tried it 1,000 times (Ok, 100) and at this point I am using snaps and velcro because I simply cannot deal with the stress anymore. So, I've already sent it in after 4 months of ownership once and now am considering it again.

But assuming that all the other "little things" that have frustrated me have been because of my lack of sewing skills, I do like this machine. Well, maybe I just like sewing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does the job but not a great machine...
I am a sewist with intermediate sewing skills, and I recieved this machine as a gift.
This machine made me think that maybe I can't sew afterall. But when I got my new machine (a different brand) It all came back to me that I can sew like a pro!
This gets great reviews here but if you notice they are mostly from beginners, inexperienced sewists, or first time machine owners, or someone teaching a child to sew.
I recommend going to a sewing machine dealer and test-driving other machines/brands if you are considering getting this one. See what else is out there, you will be surprised! Never buy a machine based on written reviews only expecially if it doesnt belong to the top brands. Its important to be able to feel and listen to the machine while its working, then you'll be able to tell how smooth and powerful it is.
This machine does the job but if you intend to quilt a lot or sell your sewing projects, I do not recommend this machine. I get a lot of towelling and uneven stiches.

It is so hard to piece quilts because the fabric has to be directly under the presser foot for it to take the fabric in so you have to go back and forth to fix your stiches, otherwise it will unravel later and you'll end up with uneven peices.
The bobbin keeps jamming and you have to take the thing apart to get access to the bobbin. My husband would often catch me with smoke coming out of my ears and a bunch of thread laying on the floor. It was so exasperating! The machines that have top loading bobbins and are jam-proof are so much more easier and you might want to check those out. I recommend looking at the White, Janome, Brother or if you want the higher-end machines, look at Elna, Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking. Once you use these machines you can never go back!
Did you know that the Vikings doesnt require oiling ever?
Another thing is the oiling part. I just hate all the gunk that can get on your sewing projects and fabric after you oil the machine, the smell of oil, and it gets so dirty because dust fabric particles from the fabric sticks to the oil.
Thes machine doesn't feel very sturdy and the plastic casing seems cheap. You can tell just by listening to the motor that its is a flimsy machine. On top of that, it is so unattractive.
I agree that its a great machine for a beginner, for a child learning how to sew, and for this price.
To me a sewing machine is something that should last you a lot of years and can offer room for growth so I suggest investing a little bit more money and research into it.
If you are a beginner and intend to learn on this machine on your own, I would not recommend this machine. It just might curb your enthusiasm to sew. ... Read more

Professional wine connoisseurs favor the Screwpull corkscrew for its effortless and split-second cork removal, and this Screwpull set, complete with foil cutter and stopper, makes a wonderful gift for the at-home wine consumer. First introduced in 1979, the Screwpull Lever model has been through many improvements since to achieve the reputation it has today. The uniquely designed wine opener works by cranking the handle forward and lining the worm up in the center of your wine bottle’s cork. Bringing the handle back upward drives the worm into the cork and then cranking it swiftly down again lifts it out of the bottle. Another swift up-and-down motion ejects the cork from the worm. By simultaneously squeezing the grips, you can catch the cork before it drops and stains your tablecloth. Screwpull’s S00023 Lever model is constructed with a high-quality mechanism that lasts up to five times longer than other Lever models. In addition, it has a Teflon-coated screw for easier cork release that is guaranteed to open 2,000 bottles of wine before dulling. As an added bonus this Lever model comes with Screwpull’s patented four-wheel foilcutter and an attractive stainless-steel stopper with a rubber seal that preserves wine for up to two days. Screwpull covers this corkscrew under a 10-year guarantee. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

Founded in 1756, Austria’s Riedel Crystal is the world’s premier manufacturer of wine glasses and has always catered to the fine wine connoisseur. However, these wine tumblers are the company’s first attempt at producing a lower priced wine glass for casual entertaining. Like Riedel’s prestigious Vinum series of glasses, these tumblers are specifically designed for a particular grape varietal and still maintain their ability to enhance the flavors and aromas of the wines they were intended for. The only difference is that the tumblers are missing their stems, making them slightly less delicate to handle, more modern in appearance, and easier to fit in smaller cabinets, mini bars, picnic baskets, and the dishwasher.

The O series of glasses are made of machine-made of non-leaded glass. The shape of the two glasses in this set is specifically recommended to balance the fruit and acidity in full-bodied white wines, such as Chardonnay and Viognier. Each glass holds 11-1/4 ounces of wine, stands 3-7/8 inches tall, and is completely dishwasher-safe. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tasting experience
Riedel glasses make good wine great and great wine excellent. I am huge fan of the Extreme series, I own 6 of each and 4 sommeliers burgundy stems. Awesome wares if you have the storage space and take extreme care when cleaning and handling.
Despite what you read, pairing the proper glass shape to the proper varietal makes a huge difference. These glasses are a great way to get introduced to that concept. They come in packages of two (great for couples), are inexpensive, lead free and dishwasher safe. These are a very sexy alternative to stemware, stems are the part of your glasses that break most often. If you have tight storage space these things stack and take up much less room then stems.
I beg to differ with those of the opinion that these glasses are not appropriate because holding the bowl will "heat" the wine. If you are pouring the correct amount into the glass this should not be a problem. In addition, most people will hold stems by the bowl. If you do not believe me, check out the bowl of your stems after your next cocktail party...they will be littered with fingerprints. Did you hear those people complain about their wines "heating up"?
To sum it up, these are great everyday drinkers for beginning wine enthusiasts on a budget! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cook's Dream Machine
I bought this machine using a gift certificate from my last place of employment plus a little of my own dinero, and have been absolutely thrilled with it. It has flawlessly and effortlessly kneaded pasta dough, mixed a double batch of heavy gingerbread cookie dough, grated parmesan cheese to a fine powder, rescued slightly lumpy gravy, whisked together cornbread in seconds, and most recently sliced a variety of vegetables for tossed salad for 25 people (which I was requested to bring to a party--I am not a "salad person," so I was tickled when everyone praised my contribution!). I had never used a food processor for slicing, but it did a beautiful job with bell peppers and cucumbers--artfully thin, but not too fine a cut. As promised, it even did a fine job mincing just a couple of garlic cloves and also a handful of parsley, meaning that I could do a dinner's worth of food-processing in just one machine.

The accompanying video can only be watched by people who take food equipment seriously; other family members had to be asked to leave the room during the viewing, as there was much giggling about the over-earnest instructions. Nevertheless, I picked up some fabulous tips about using the Cuisinart, and recommend you sit (alone, or with a true believer) and watch it beginning to end.

The surface of the machine is very easy to clean, and Cuisinart recommends the dishwasher for the bowl and blades. Do be careful with the latter--Cuisinart should really include the disk holder, as it is dangerous to leave these accessories lying around in a kitchen drawer.

This is the third food processor I have owned, and though I mourned the demise of my trusty Panasonic (rated highly by Consumer Reports ten years ago), with this high-end Cuisinart I have "been to Paree" and have no intention of going back to the farm. If you do any industrial-strength cooking, or if you (like me) are sold on using a food processor as a high-powered, self-contained unit for basic mixing duties, this is a wonderful accomplice in your prandial ventures. Bravo Cuisinart!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuisinart PowerPrep 14 Cup-
I received this as a gift this Christmas to replace a Cuisinart that I have been using for 30 years.

I am very much impressed with it. I have made the Challah bread, corn bread and cinnamon buns from the recipe book that came with it. The machine did an excellent job and the results were wonderful.

I would definitely recommend this Cuisinart food processor

5-0 out of 5 stars A Marvel Of A Machine!
I have loved and used Cuisinart Food Processors for over 25 years. If anyone is looking to purchase one, I highly suggest the 14-cup Power Prep, a marvel of a machine.

First of all, you can knead French bread dough in just 40 seconds!

You can use a Cuisinart FP for almost every recipe, but I've written just a few Rules of Thumb (tips) that I have found to be tried and true!

White Bread: The 14-cup model will do recipes up to 6 cups of white flour (2 large French Bread loaves). Add your bread recipe ingredients (with half of the white bread flour listed in the recipe) to the work bowl, process to make a smooth batter. Add the rest of the flour, 1 cup at a time (with the last 1/2 cup through the feed tube) until the dough collects and starts to clean the sides of the bowl. Then count to 40, to dough perfection.

Wheat Bread: I've found that 3-cup whole-wheat flour recipes are best suited for this size of model (1 large loaf) since 100% whole wheat is twice as heavy white bread flour.

Rolls: Process until the dough collects and cleans the sides of the bowl, then count for 30 seconds.

Pasta or Tortillas recipes: Process and knead until the dough collects and cleans the sides of the bowl. Chilling the dough in plastic wrap for 30-60 minutes makes rolling much easier.

Piecrusts: Cutting in the fat, is simplified in a Cuisinart. Using very cold butter slices in place of shortening, rivals the best tasting crusts too. FYI: Don't process the dough to a dough ball, just PULSE until the mixture pinches together easily between your fingers. Dump the contents onto wax paper, then form dough into a ball and knead a few times by hand (adding a teaspoon of water or two, as needed). Wrap the pastry ball in plastic and chill for an hour for easy rolling.

Quick Breads: Add recipe ingredients and PULSE, just until the flour barely disappears. Scrape out contents into greased pans.

Enjoy your Cuisinart Purchase!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not totally satisfied
Like many others, this was purchased to replace a very old Cuisinart. I know this has rave reviews, but I'm not very happy with it. I've had it for quite a while now & keep hoping I'll get used to it or start to like it more, but there are a few very annoying problems.

Good stuff:
capacity is great
button feature makes it easy to use
dough option & general power is very effective. (though I use my kitchenaid more for dough making)
It's cuisinart & works well (as expected)

Not so good stuff:
It's a pain to use - it might be because of the enhanced "safety" features, but you have to remove the feeder everytime you want to open the top.
You can't insert your finger in the bottom to hold the blade in place. This is a very hard habit for me to break. There isn't an easy way to hold the blade in place to empty the contents.
I don't have a huge kitchen, so having to remove parts all the time & place them on my counter so I can do another step makes for less efficient cooking.

So, even though this one is pretty, I wish i had a Custom 14 instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had a Classic Custom 14 instead
I received one of these a year ago for Xmas to replace an 18 yr old DLC7 (same as Cuisinart Custom 14). As everyone says, the features of this new model are great - much more convenient. HOWEVER... I now have to return it for warranty service because of NUMEROUS defects.

There are cracks in both feed tubes, the lid, and one is starting on the bowl, all along stress points that didn't exist in the old model. Worse, the plastic coating over the soft touch buttons cracked and developed a large hole, so I've had to cover the buttons with tape to keep junk out of it. Since I have every confidence that these problems will return, be on the watch for a factory-reconditioned version for auction in the near future so I can get myself a Custom 14 :-) ... Read more
